A week ago, OnePlus announced that their first phone, the OnePlus One, would see a flash sale-like $50 discount for a week. Since that “experiment was a great success,” they have decided to drop the price permanently by $50 to $249 (16GB) and $299 (64GB).  Even though this phone is over a year old, that’s still a heck of a price for a phone this good.

On a related note, OnePlus also announced that Dropbox is a new partner. Thanks to this new partnership, a new bundle that includes a “free” year of Dropbox Pro and a 64GB OnePlus One can be purchased starting June 10 for $349. I put free in quotes there because it’s not exactly free. The 64GB now starts at $299, so technically, the Dropbox Pro account is costing you $50. A year of Dropbox Pro typically runs $99, so you are still receiving a $50 discount, but again, I don’t know that “free” is the right term here.

So, there you go. Anyone interested, even with the OnePlus 2 arriving within the next couple of months?

You can buy the OnePlus One here.

The OnePlus One has turned a year old, and to celebrate, the manufacturer that “Never Settles” is slashing the price of their device, by a single dollar. While that may not seem very cool at all, the OnePlus is already priced starting at $299, which leaves very little margin for the company to profit from.

With this “price cut,” the company states, “Slashing the price by just $1 is a symbolic gesture, showcasing our commitment to delivering amazing hardware at cost, and ultimately making it more accessible for more people.”

Now, even though the phone itself is not seeing a huge dip in price, OnePlus is also giving a 50% off discount on select accessories through its store, such as screen protectors, their special ear buds from JBL, and OTG cable. The full list can be viewed here. In addition, you can even pick up a OnePlus t-shirt for 50% off.

If you would like to pick up the OnePlus One for its special price of $298 or $348, buy it here.

The follow-up to the OnePlus One will arrive in Q3, at least according to a report out of Bloomberg. During a short feature on the Chinese start-up, casual references to the OnePlus Two (yes, that’s the name) launching in the third quarter along with a cheaper model that will arrive before the end of the year, were dropped. That of course comes on the heels of random rumors suggesting a new phone from OnePlus may not arrive until some time in 2016. How silly do those sound now?

During the clip, Bloomberg also noted that OnePlus sold about 1 million phones last year, hopes to raise that to 3-5 million this year, and 10 million next year. Does that mean no more invites?

We don’t know much about the OnePlus Two other than we expect it to take on a similar approach to the OnePlus One, only with more premium materials. I would be shocked if this phone wasn’t still sold for rock bottom prices, yet still had premium specs.

I was a big fan of the OnePlus One, even if the phone’s creators couldn’t help but leave us all shaking our heads at their screw-ups. Outside of whatever Motorola and Google do for new phones, I would be OnePlus’ up there as one that I’m most looking forward to. What about you?

Hopefully, you didn’t flash that OxygenOS thing that OnePlus called an “OS” the other week, because Cyanogen 12 is now available and rolling out to all OnePlus One owners starting today (well, yesterday it started). After a slight delay, if we can even call it that, the update brings Android 5.0 Lollipop and a whole bunch of new customizations to a phone that cracked our top 5 phones of 2014

In the update, the Cyanogen team takes on Google’s Material Design, adds new theming features using their brand new App Themer, introduces a new email client powered by Boxer, and more. This should be a good one.

And hey, for those complaining about it being delayed, ask DROID Turbo owners what they think about waiting for promised Lollipop updates.

OnePlus owners, how’s the update?

Update:  Here is a better changelog provided by OnePlus.

-Improved camera with continuous shot and improved low-light performance
-Enhanced look and feel
-Enhanced theme chooser
-Ambient display with lift-to-wake
-New lock screen
-Cleaner settings menu
-Multi-user support
-Enhanced A/V support (more codecs, high-res playback, high-res output over USB, low latency capture)
-Power and performance optimizations
-Smart lock
-Improved BT and WiFi compatibility
-Enhanced notification and privacy controls

Over the weekend, OnePlus released their custom Android skin, also known as OxygenOS, to the OnePlus One as an “update” just a week after it was originally supposed to debut. I’m putting “update” in quotes there because well, it’s not really an update. This is a custom ROM that requires a full factory reset and a custom recovery in order to get onto your phone. This isn’t delivered over-the-air (OTA) – instead it requires you to be familiar with adb commands, fastboot, unlocking a bootloader, and more. It’s a load of fun!

We went ahead and flashed the file onto our OnePlus One in order to see what was new and hopefully give you an idea as to whether or not you want to make the jump on your own device. With the release of OxygenOS 1.0, OnePlus gave us a quick video tutorial of some of its new features that didn’t seem all that exciting. So again, we went ahead and flashed it to get a better look inside, to see if there was anything they left out and to figure out if anyone should ditch Cyanogen OS in favor of OxygenOS. The short answer is – probably not.

OxygenOS is essentially a stock build of Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. The only changes here to the stock experience are the addition of gestures on the lock screen, a built-in file manager app, and the ability to organize quick toggle settings. Oh, you can also set a specific lock screen wallpaper that differs from you home screen wallpaper. That’s pretty much it.

Below, you can see it all in action, but as I mention in the clip, you will probably be better off waiting for the Cyanogen OS 12 update, which will surely be packed full of goodies.

A week ago, OnePlus issued an apology after delaying the release of their OxygenOS update to the One. Today, the update is now available for download. Unfortunately, there is both good and bad/time-consuming news here.

The update introduces Lollipop to the OnePlus One, along with OnePlus’ take on an Android skin, which like other OEMs are calling an “operating system.” There isn’t much of a feature list to report back on at the moment, but OnePlus has said that there are gestures built-in to areas like the lock screen, customizable quick settings toggles, and a file manager. While that list may not seem like much, Lollipop is really all you should care about, OnePlus One owners.

That’s the good news. The bad/time-consuming news is that you have to manually flash OxygenOS – this isn’t an over-the-air (OTA) update.

So what does that mean? Well, they have a set of detailed instructions over at their forums that we have linked below, but the basics are this. You need to download the OxygenOS update file which is roughly 700MB. After that, you need to have adb and fastboot setup, know how to flash TWRP custom recovery, and finally, be prepared to fully wipe your phone. If that all sounds like the good ol’ days of flashing a ROM, that’s because that’s exactly what we are looking at here.

The instructions aren’t really all that bad, but if you aren’t familiar with adb or custom recoveries, this could all sound like we’re speaking a different language. If you have even a basic familiarity with what I’ve just said, you should be able to get OxygenOS up and running in no time.

The installation guide can be found at this OnePlus forum thread.

Anyone flash it? What do you think?

Cheers Osaz, Khaled, and James!

As most OnePlus One owners have already noticed, the company is not shipping out the CM12 OTA, as certification issues have forced them to put it on hold. As we found out earlier in March, certification is what also held up the release of OxygenOS.

As stated in its forums, “All parties are working together to resolve the problems as soon as possible.” This morning, OnePlus says they have no further info, and may not have anything meaningful for the next couple of days until they hear from their partners regarding certification.

Sadly, this is not an April Fools’ joke, but I think many One owners suspected this was going to happen. So far, OnePlus’ track record for updates is subpar.

Feel free to vent your frustration in the comments section below.

According to OnePlus, the official CyanogenMod 12S OTA update for the OnePlus One will be released on or before March 30, 2015, and the company’s in-house OxygenOS will be available for download on or before March 27, 2015.

OnePlus feels so confident that they will hit these deadlines that if they in fact do miss them, they will give away five phones to their fans through the forums. Personally, I don’t think any current owner cares about them giving away free phones; they just want the update in a timely manner.

Here’s hoping our OnePlus One owners get their update soon.

At this point, either HTC is pulling off the ultimate troll job in continuing to make us believe up to the last minute that they are just re-releasing the One (M8), only with a couple of tweaks, but will show off a super secretive design tomorrow, or they really are just re-releasing the One (M8) with a couple of tweaks.

The new One M9 is pictured at the top on the left. In the video below, you can see it in hand, along with comments about the placement of buttons, the new camera on the back, UltraPixel camera on the front, and two-tone colorway.

It looks nice, it just looks like 2014.

If This Really is the HTC One M9, are You Going to be Disappointed? is a post from: Droid Life

This morning, German electronics retailer, Cyberport, posted up listings for a phone that they are calling the HTC One M9. Along with those listings, they included 8 high-res, official-looking press images of the device in both gunmetal and silver/gold, a massive list of specs, pricing, features, and just about anything else you could ask for when a device has been made official. Except, of course, the HTC One M9 won’t be official until next weekend. So what’s the deal? Is this really it or not? If so, are you disappointed?

There are a two things to look at here. First, the images match up in form and color scheme to the early leaks we saw back in January. In other words, the phone looks exactly like last year’s One (M8), except that it only has a single camera sensor on the back and a really ugly, two-tone colorway in one of the models (silver and gold). This is also the form factor we saw early on and immediately thought was a shell or dummy device to throw off the trail on what may be the real HTC One M9.

Second, this phone looks nothing like the leak that @evleaks gave us. So far, the image that Evan gave us a week or so after the original One M9 leaks starting rolling out, is the only image of that particular device. No one else has come up with a leak or render or anything close to that single image, outside of a report from HTC Source that didn’t include photos.

So which is the real phone? Tough to tell. I certainly don’t know. The early leaks – which match up to the phone in this post – are the device we have seen the most, but then again, @evleaks has been right more than any other leaker in recent memory, especially when it comes to HTC stuff. Leaker @upleaks, who also has a good track record with HTC leaks, seems to be leaning towards the device featured in this post as being the real deal, but won’t fully give his blessing. HTC Source, a site dedicated to the HTC beat, seems to be on the side of @evleaks. I’d say it’s a split at this point.

htc one m9 gunmetal4

My gut, is telling me to go with the image that @evleaks posted and that HTC Source is also behind, which would be the phone not featured in this listing from Cyberport. While a company like Apple can re-release the same phone design two years in a row and still be successful, HTC probably won’t ever be in a position to do that, especially if you consider how weak sales of the One (M8) were. Sure, they can keep a similar design from one year to the next, just like they did with the One (M7) and One (M8), but the phone shown here is basically just the One (M8) all over again with some swapped internals and a single camera. If HTC were really to do that, it just feels like they are digging their own grave.

And look, I could be wrong, but man, I hope I’m not. The phone that @evleaks gave us looks modern, fresh, and like the future. It looks like a phone that is ready to bring HTC back. The phone here, just looks like we’re living out 2014 again.

So here is what I want to know. After taking a look at the images in this post and the full set of specs pulled from Cyberport listings, let us know your thoughts. Would you be disappointed if this is the real deal – if this is the HTC One M9?

Note:  Before I could even get this post up, Cyberport pulled its listings.

In case you had any doubts at all, the latest tweet from HTC UK’s account should make the entire situation pretty clear. The ‘New HTC One‘ is coming on March 1.

Being unveiled during MWC in Barcelona, we still are not clear if it will actually be referred to as the One (M9), One M9 sans parenthesis, or simply just HTC One. The first One from HTC was just One (aka One M7), then last year’s was One (M8). While all of them are technically the One, HTC tried quite hard to differentiate the two One devices with the added model number in parenthesis whenever mentioned. It is definitely a clustered naming situation.

Guess we will find out on March 1.

People are still very excited about the OnePlus One, according to…OnePlus. Unfortunately for those still dripping in sweaty excitement, the phone is still too difficult to buy. No way! OnePlus One? Difficult? Never. To help fix the problem, OnePlus is starting a new initiative for buying their phone that takes you out of their “beloved” invite system. Seriously, they called it “beloved,” as in, they like the thing.

Anyways, every Tuesday going forward, OnePlus will open up sales of the One for 24 hours, starting at 8AM London time (midnight Pacific). During that time, the phone will be available in either Silk White (16GB) or Sandstone Black (64GB). However, after the 24 hour period expires, in comes the invite system once again.

Fun.

If you missed it, check out our first ever “You Decided,” where users chose the OnePlus One over the LG G3 and Xperia Z3 in a battle to the death.

Below is an email being sent around with details about the Tuesday open sales:

Dear Friends,

We’ve been shipping the OnePlus One for half a year, and nowadays we’re bumping into lots of people using it when we’re out and about. It’s incredibly exciting for us, but we always strive to do better. Although we have an active and supportive fanbase, a lot of people have interest in the One but have told us that it’s just too difficult to buy. We believe that great things should be shared. Thus, it’s been our goal from the beginning to put our products into the hands of as many people as possible.

Over the past few months, we’ve been exploring new ways of making the OnePlus One easier to purchase. The overall amount of available invites has increased significantly, but we’ve also held pre-order and open sales events, allowing for purchases without the need for an invite. During these events, we have been collecting data and fine-tuning our production schedules.

Today, we’re glad to announce that we’re making it even easier to buy the One.

Every Tuesday, we will open up sales for 24 hours, starting at 8 am London time (midnight in Los Angeles; 4 pm in Hong Kong). The OnePlus One will be available without an invite in both 16GB Silk White and 64GB Sandstone Black.

This doesn’t mean that our beloved invite system is going away, and it will continue to be the standard method for purchasing the One during the remaining 6 days of the week. And, you will still receive invites to share with friends whenever you buy a One, even on Tuesdays.

As a young tech startup, we’re constantly experimenting, iterating and improving. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and coming with us on this journey. We wouldn’t be where we are without you, and you are all as much a part of OnePlus as we are.

Never Settle.

The OnePlus Team
