A new Nova Launcher v5.5 beta update is available now to beta participants and it includes some of the goodness from the Pixel Launcher in the Pixel 2, as well as other Oreo-styled items.

For one, you can now add the search bar directly to the dock if you want, just like you’ll see on the Pixel Launcher with the Pixel 2. You’ll find it in Nova Settings>Dock>Searchbar in dock. To style it, you’ll do so from Nova Settings>Desktop>Search bar style.

If you aren’t a fan of the searchbar moving, well, maybe you’ll like the new pop-up menu found in Oreo. The pop-up menu being the menu you see as you long-press on icons or folders on your home screen. To find this setting, head into Nova Settings>Look and Feel>Popup Menu.

Finally, you’ll find fun little adaptive icon animations as you drag icons around (assuming you have adaptive icons turned on), speed improvements to adaptive icon shape and theme application, and bug fixes and other optimizations.

If you are in the beta, head into Google Play and you should see the update live already. If you aren’t, you can find beta builds and ways to join at the source link below.

While many Android device owners won’t see an Oreo update for quite some time, custom launcher developers are always bringing renditions of the latest features straight to devices, without the need for an OTA. That’s the story for the latest beta update to Nova Launcher, which includes Adaptive Icon control for devices on Android 5.0+, just like you have in Android 8.0.

Natively for Oreo, users can control the shape their app icons will have, be it a circle, square, squircle, etc. The downside is, it’s up to app developers to build in support for that, and given Oreo is still so fresh, not many have done so. However, with Nova Launcher, you can now apply masks to all icons, providing that sweet Adaptive Icon look. There seems to already be quite a few shapes to choose from (see GIF below), so if you’re done looking at the default icons, go grab this beta update and change it up.

Here’s the complete list of changes.

What’s New

  • Adaptive icons for Android 5.0+
  • Use and control the style of adaptive icons from apps that support them
  • Scale and reshape legacy/existing icons to match the adaptive style
  • Minor fixes

Provided this is a beta, there’s likely to be some minor issues. Here’s the current list of what to look out for.

Known Issues

  • Dynamic calendar icons don’t currently remask to the adaptive shape
  • Apps using gradient in vectors in their adaptive icon (Plaid) require 7.0+
  • Apps using drawable aliases for their adaptive icon are not currently backported

Nova Launcher is already a fantastic 3rd-party launcher, but with the latest inclusion of support for Sesame Shortcuts, it just got a whole lot sweeter.

Sesame Shortcuts, which is a separate app download from Google Play, offers the ability to access various shortcuts throughout your device. With it, you can quickly access different apps, contacts, messaging, Google Search, plus a whole lot more. As an example, if you type “B” into the search box on Nova Launcher, you’ll find every app that starts with B, conversations from your messaging apps that include a contact that starts with B, or even Spotify playlists that start with B. Essentially, you’ll be diving in and out of apps so fast with Sesame you won’t know what hit you.

In total, there are over 100 shortcuts to utilize, and with each use, the feature gets smarter. According to Sesame’s developers, “[Sesame] learns from each interaction, updating search rankings based on usage.”

Now, according to Sesame’s own documentation, Sesame is a $2.99 app with an unlimited trial. After 14 days, if you are using the app but haven’t yet paid for it, you’ll see a message each time you use a shortcut. However, users who installed Sesame before July, 2017 will get upgraded for free automatically. It’s certainly worth the trial if you think you can benefit from it.

If you want to see this in action, check out the video below, but I will warn you, the music is pretty awful so feel free to mute it.

Nova Launcher, the launcher that we’ve been followers of for years and have yet to find reason to switch off of, gained a feature that the purist of pure Android elitists have been begging for – Google Now panel access. This would be the left-situated Now panel from the Google Now or Pixel Launchers that we wish 3rd party launchers had full access to.

The addition is and isn’t pretty, though, and does involve an .apk sideload since the app add-on that powers this integration isn’t allowed in the Google Play store. That will likely mean additional .apk sideloads of this updated companion app for years to come, rather than a simple update to it via the Play store.

So if you must have the Google Now panel off to the left of your home screen because a simple swipe gesture that has been baked into the app for years wasn’t good enough, this is how you can make that happen!

  1. Install the latest Nova Launcher Beta. [Play Link]
  2. Install this Nova Google Companion 1.0 app. [APK]
  3. Restart Nova Launcher (Nova Settings>Advanced>Restart Nova Launcher).
  4. Fap.

I did a quick test of this new feature and it does indeed work, so that’s great. Do I want to continue to have to sideload this companion app to get bug fixes and all of the other benefits of updated apps? Ummm, not really, no. But hey, maybe one day this will all get worked out properly and the Now integration will just become a part of Nova. Help us, Google, please.

If you need to know the dirty details on why this companion app is needed, feel free to hit up that source link below.

Anyways, the new beta includes a new notification badge option that mimics the Notification Dots that you’ll see in Android O. They don’t necessarily carry any additional function, but do look like that Android O freshness. You can see them live in the image above. Additionally, the update adds a round searchbar style, along with performance improvements and “minor fixes for Android O.”

The update is live already, so if you are in the Nova Beta, grab it through the Play store. If you are new to the beta, get started in the Nova Launcher Beta Community over at this Google+ post.

The beta for Nova Launcher received an update this week, catered almost specifically for new Galaxy S8 owners. According to the changelog, the update includes minor fixes for Samsung’s latest, respect for system-level themes on the S8, plus Dynamic Badges for all users.

The big addition for all users is the inclusion of Dynamic Badges. With these, you’ll begin to see image badges from notification content. For example, if a tweet comes in, you’ll see the user’s profile photo on top of your Twitter shortcut. Same goes for email, Hangouts, and all apps such as that. Just note, if the Dynamic Badges don’t appear to be working, this is still a beta.

What’s New

  • Dynamic Badges – Image badges from notification content
  • Respect system level themes on Samsung and Huawei devices
  • Minor fixes for Samsung Galaxy S8

If you aren’t already running the beta, you can opt-in right here, then download the beta straight from Google Play.

A new Nova Launcher beta (v5.1) arrived today with new addition worth talking about: Dynamic Badges. What the hell are Dynamic Badges? Glad you asked! They are a potential upgrade over your standard notification count badges that will show you more info outside of just how many unread messages or missed notifications you have.

In the images included here, you can see what Dynamic Badges look like. They’ll show in the lower-right of each icon and do replace the standard count badges if you want them to, so that you’ll see images instead. Those images represent images from notifications to hopefully show you exactly what’s in-store for that missed email or message. If you have apps in a folder that all have unread notifications, you’ll see which apps have notifications on the outside of that folder, instead of a big number that means almost nothing. Again, the thought here is that numbers often don’t mean much, but an image representing the info could help you manage your phone better.

If this sounds like a terrible idea to you and you love numbers, don’t worry, because you can switch between the different badge types.

Grab the new beta below!

An update for Nova Launcher Beta is headed out today on Google Play, bringing the look of Google’s latest App Shortcuts (pictured above) feature to all Nova users. Additionally, the developer also lists a backport of some Android 7.1 launcher shortcuts to Android 5.1 and 6.0, as well as an option to display weather in the Google Search bar.

At this time, while the UI change will make it appear that you have App Shortcuts, the feature is still different from what you would see on a Pixel device running Google’s latest software. For example, if you long press on the Camera app, you won’t see a shortcut to snap a selfie. Instead, all long presses will pull up Nova’s edit feature, as well as remove, app info, and an uninstall button. A few screenshot examples of what to expect have been placed below.

EDIT: We figured out the initial issue, where the app shortcuts didn’t seem to be working on our Pixel devices. If you don’t set Nova as your default launcher, which we hadn’t because we were only testing the feature, you won’t get shortcuts other than the Edit, Remove, App Info, Uninstall options. If you set Nova as your default, you should then see the actual app shortcuts for apps with them. Make sense? Sorry for the confusion. We’ve added new screenshots below as well.

Update: On the Pixel devices we use, the shortcuts do not work for apps. However, on other devices, the app shortcuts may work just fine. Let us know in the comments if your device is supporting Nova Launcher’s version of App Shortcuts.

To place the current weather in your Google Search bar, go into Nova Settings, then select “Desktop.” From here, tap on “Search Bar Style.” At the very bottom, you will see a button to enable the weather. Of course, the search bar is still customizable to any style you choose.

To download, make sure you’re opted in for the beta by following the link below, then download it.

Following in the footsteps of Action Launcher 3, Nova Launcher Beta has now been updated to bring that Pixel Launcher flavor as well. That means you get an app drawer that can be swiped into, an arrow indicator to remind you to swipe, transparent tinting of the dock area, proper Pixel folder icons, and the new Google Search pill with calendar.

I’ve got it all setup in the image above, but Kevin Barry (Nova Launcher creator) offers up the following instructions to get you into a similar look. Oh, I added a final step to get your folders looking just right as well.

Pixel Launcher setup:

  • Drawer > Swipe to open
  • Drawer > Card Background > Off
  • Drawer > Background Color > White
  • Desktop > Indicators > Page Indicator > Line
  • Desktop > Indicators > Swipe to drawer indicator
  • Dock > Background > Rectangle, White, Transparent, behind navbar
  • Folder > Folder Background > N Preview

As for the rest of the update, the full changelog is below. This beta includes a new search view, “timeout” screen lock option, “double-tap-swipe” gestures, an integrated search bar in the drawer, and more. So yep, it’s much more than just the Pixel Launcher update.

WHAT’S NEW

  • 5.0-beta1 Sept 15
  • Swipe to open drawer (a la Pixel Launcher)
  • New Pixel Launcher style searchbar
  • New search view, with tabs for Frequent, Recent ad New/Updated apps
  • New “Timeout” screen lock method
  • New double-tap-swipe gestures
  • Integrated searchbar into drawer (card and immersive)
  • Option for dock backgrounds to draw under navbar
  • Nougat fixes and optimizations
  • Improve interactions with KLWP

With yesterday’s launch of Developer Preview 2 for Android N, Google introduced a new look for folders. While it’s nothing too innovative, the developer behind Nova Launcher has spared no time in bringing the new look to his app, allowing anyone and everyone part of the beta to experience the new folders for themselves.

To sum up the change, the folder will show corners or edges of your app icons, depending on how many apps you have in a folder. The header image above is from the Android N DP2 build, but that’s exactly what the folders inside of the updated Nova Launcher beta look like.

Once you are updated, headed into the Nova Launcher settings under Folders. Where you can choose the layout of folders is where you will find the “Android N” option.

To download this new look, make sure you are signed up for the beta. You can opt-in by following the link below. Once opted in, simply download Nova Launcher from Google Play and enjoy.

The beta for Nova Launcher received an update this week, bringing with it a new Night Mode feature, improved search bar configuration, as well as fixes for bugs. The Night Mode feature can be turned on manually whenever you want it, or can be set by time. For example, once it’s 8PM, the feature can turn on automatically, and once 7AM rolls around, it turns off. Night Mode essentially turns all white objects, such as the search bar and app drawer, to black, making them easier on the eyes when in low lighting.

In addition to Night Mode, which was previously released as a “Holo Mode” April Fools’ joke, the developer lists “improved search bar configuration.” This means, inside of Settings, you can better configure the look of the search bar. You can now change the color manually and the logo that appears.

If you are reading this, kicking yourself for not already being a part of the Nova Launcher beta, don’t worry. You can easily opt into the beta here on Google Play. It may take a couple of hours for your beta opt-in to be processed, but one it is, you are free to download the beta app directly from Google Play.

What’s New

  • Night Mode
  • Improved search bar configuration
