In mid-2016, Google provided specific timeframes for when Nexus devices would stop receiving new Android version updates. Today, Google is back to update us again, but this time, for when security updates will specifically cease for all current Nexus and Pixel devices.

Before today, all Google provided was a not-so-technical timeframe. The exact words were, “For the longer of 3 years from availability or 18 months from when the Google Store last sold the device.” Yeah, that’s some backwards gibberish, not even sure if it’s English.

Anyway, we now know specifically when all current Nexus and Pixel devices will no longer receive security updates.

Here are the details you’ll need to know. In layman’s, the below dates are when you phone is officially unsupported and you should really consider upgrading.

Google is pushing out September’s Android security update to Nexus devices today and has done so by already publishing both factory image and OTA .zip files. This is the first security patch for Nougat and that means new Android 7.0 builds for a few devices. They also provided the typical security bulletin as well.

As of right now, we have new Android 7.0.0 files for the Pixel C (NRD90R), Nexus 5X (NRD90S), Nexus 9 WiFi (NRD90R), and Nexus Player (NRD90R).

We are also getting new Android 6.0.1 files for the Nexus 6P (MTC20L), Nexus 5X (MTC20K), Nexus 5 (MOB31E), Nexus 6 (MMB30W, MOB31E), and Nexus 9 LTE (MOB31E).

NOTE: We don’t know what’s going on with the Nexus 6P. Should files go up, we’ll be sure to update this post.

You can grab each image or OTA file at the links below. For instructions on how to flash a factory image, here you go. For instructions on how to flash an OTA .zip file, here you go.

According to Evan Blass on Twitter, Google is working with Huawei to launch a new 7-inch tablet later this year. Will it be a Nexus? A Pixel? We don’t quite know yet. A single specification was provided by Blass, reporting that the device will feature 4GB of RAM. There’s no word yet on processor, LTE capability, or anything else.

The last Android tablet Google launched was the Pixel C, a very nice, yet very boring device. As for the last Nexus tablet, that was the Nexus 9, being yet another mediocre Android tablet experience. Given that this new tablet may feature a 7″ display, it seems reasonable to assume Google would utilize the popular Nexus 7 name to market this product. However, with all of the Pixel vs. Nexus public branding confusion going on, it’s hard to say what Google might call it.

Earlier this year, a trademark popped up for “Huawei 7P,” but not much information followed since all signs were pointing at HTC to create this year’s Nexus phones. If this “7P” trademark was directed at a possible tablet device, that makes more sense. Additionally, don’t forget that the general manager of Huawei’s consumer group in South Africa stated, “We’re doing the Nexus again this year, by the way.”

Regardless of what they call it, people enjoyed the Nexus 7 tablets, so a followup would likely be welcomed by the Android community.

Would you be interested in a Nexus 7 (2016)?

For those holding onto a Nexus 5 or Nexus 7 (2013), asking if now would be a good time to upgrade, that’s affirmative. With the launch of Android 7.0, it is now official that the Nexus 7 (2013), as well as the Nexus 5, will not receive the latest update to the Android OS.

Should this move shock or dismay anyone? Absolutely not. Google listed the death date for the Nexus 5 as October, 2015 earlier this year. However, even with that date long gone, the Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 are still receiving monthly security updates. According to Google, those updates will last three years from time of release.

If you are still utilizing a Nexus 5 and only want to rock a Nexus device, hang in there, the new Nexus phones are on the way.

As we already know, Android software updates typically last for two years following the launch of a device. This goes for pretty much every OEM, although, not every device sees that type of support. However, when it comes to Google and its lineup of Nexus devices, the company is usually quite good about supporting its smartphones and tablets.

Listed on a support page this week, Google is now detailing the timeframes that owners of these select devices should start really thinking about an upgrade. For Nexus phones and tablets, the Android software updates will last “at least” two years, but for security patches, the updates will continue for about three years after launch.

To cite the list, this means that the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X should see support into the deep part of 2017, but sadly, the Nexus 9 is soon to meet its demise this October. Oddly enough, many will note that the Nexus 6 (the whale) is not listed. Why this is, who knows, but I suspect it will also see the update support for at least two years, which would be around November of this year.

Look over the list, then get excited about the fact that we should have a new Nexus device announced in the coming months. New Nexus phones are always something to get hyped about.

UPDATE: Google remember the Nexus 6 and so we’ve updated the list below.

Through two separate interviews from Huawei executives that took place this week, we aren’t starting to understand that Chinese company’s plans for the fall. One of those plans includes their VR and Daydream-ready phone, but they may also include a new Nexus device.

According to Huawei’s Richard Yu, the man in charge of Huawei’s consumer electronics business who sat down for an interview with the Wall Street Journal, we should expect a phone that will take advantage of Google’s new Daydream VR platform this fall. He didn’t provide any other details, so he’s really just confirming what Google told us at I/O while adding in a time frame. The “fall” makes sense since we expect Android N (which has Daydream built-in) to hit stable in late summer, which would then mean the first devices running it would arrive shortly thereafter.

As for the Nexus news, during an interview with Gearburn, the general manager of Huawei’s consumer group in South Africa, Charlene Munilall, reportedly confirmed that her company will once again be a part of this year’s Nexus line-up. The confirmation was brought up when Munilall was questioned about why Huawei had not released the 2015 Nexus 6P in South Africa. She responded by saying that Nexus is a “very niche product,” before tossing out the line we care about, which was, “We’re doing the Nexus again this year, by the way.”

That’s all she said, so we don’t know if she means a tablet or a phone or something else altogether. Could she be referring to the Snapdragon 820-powered “Nexus 6P” we saw in recent benchmarks or does Huawei have tablet in the works? Was her quote taken out of context? Assuming that quote was transcribed word-for-word, I don’t know how else anyone could take that.

I would certainly be open to Huawei making another Nexus. They did a fabulous job with the 6P and seem to be working as closely with Google as anyone. What about you? Ready for another Huawei Nexus?

UPDATE:  Huawei reached out to us with a statement on both topics here. The full read is below.

“We don’t comment on future products, as a matter of policy. Huawei is committed to creating the world’s most compelling and innovative devices, offering an exceptional performance and outstanding user experience.

We are proud to have worked with Google, which is strong in innovation, on the Nexus 6P and will continue to collaborate in the future, such as our support for Daydream, the recently-announced platform for high performance mobile VR.”

We may not need to do that any longer because Google started posting the files today. I’m not kidding – the .zip OTA files are now up on the Google Developers site, right next to the factory images.

Google includes instructions for flashing these .zip files, which include using a bit of adb and the “adb sideload” command. We also have instructions for it here.

At this time, they are only populating the page with recent update files (Android 6.0.1) for the Pixel C, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 9, and Nexus Player.

Pretty sweet, though, right?

Earlier this morning, we told you that Google would be pushing updates to its Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 phones in an attempt to patch the Stagefright flaw that became public knowledge a week ago. As it turns out, Google will actually begin pushing updates to the Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7, Nexus 9, and Nexus 10 today, updates that are the first in an on-going monthly security update package that was just announced.

Google states via its official Android blog that from this week on, Nexus devices will receive regular over-the-air (OTA) updates each month that are focused on security. These updates are in addition to the typical platform updates.

This month’s update contains security fixes for “issues in bulletins provided to partners through July 2015,” which of course, fixes the Stagefright issues that shocked our world last week. These security updates will also be released publicly through the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).

Finally, “Nexus devices will continue to receive major updates for at least two years and security patches for the longer of three years from initial availability or 18 months from last sale of the device via the Google Store.”

As we continue to receive new file URLs that are direct downloads from Google, we will continue to update this post.

*Note – In order to flash a .zip file in adb, be sure to match up the build number on the file to your current or the update will fail. For example, look at the new build number in brackets followed by the build number that it’s coming “from.” In your Settings>About screen, you will want to match up to the “from” build number.

For instructions to sideload using adb, check here. For instructions on how to grab an OTA file, check here.
