The Microsoft Office suite of apps, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are now out of Preview for Android smartphones, downloadable by all over on Google Play. Previews for each app were made available back in mid-May, but apparently testing went so well, public builds are now rolling out.

According to the Office team’s blog post, during the preview period, the apps were tested on over 1,900 different Android phone models in 83 countries, with thousands of users providing feedback. Even a few of the user-requested features, such as easier syncing to Google Drive and Box, have been built-in to these builds today.

If you are looking for the tablet Office apps, you can find those here.

For all of your Microsoft Office needs, head on over to Google Play now.

Along with the fun Microsoft Outlook “preview” news from earlier, we wanted to point out Microsoft’s other news of the early hours, that Microsoft Office is out of preview on Android tablets and now available as separate downloads of Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. After months of testing from preview participants, the apps are now ready for mass consumption.

The apps are “unmistakably” Office, yet still optimized for Android tablets (no phone support, folks). Microsoft thinks that you will “immediately feel familiar” when using the new apps, with large touch points making it easy for those of you with the fattest of fingers. You can connect external keyboards to help you become more productive, should see existing documents render “beautifully,” and will get prioritized features based on your mobile scenarios.

Here are some of the highlights for each app from Microsoft’s announcement:

  • Word documents look beautiful, with text, images, footnotes, tables and charts all nicely formatted. You can review documents by tracking changes and adding comments, and then easily share your work.
  • Excel spreadsheets bring raw data to life with support for formulas, charts, tables, PivotTables, sorting, filtering and comments.
  • PowerPoint presentations look stunning when your ideas are expressed with full support for rich formatting and embedded video, transitions and animations. There’s even a handy format painter tool, built especially for touch.

In the end, this is still the Office that you already know. Microsoft has done a lovely job designing these new apps (Outlook in particular), so if you are an Office user, be sure to grab all of these new apps – assuming you have an Android tablet.

Last night, Microsoft dropped a whole bunch of new apps on our laps that help round out their Office presence on Android. Not only did they take their Office preview out of “preview” with new apps for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, but they released an email app that you may want to give a serious look at. Yep, Microsoft Outlook is now available on Android.

Microsoft Outlook for Android gives you “one unified view of your email, calendar, contacts, and attachments,” to hopefully give you the opportunity to get more done, more easily. You can view the integrated calendar, share available meeting times, schedule meetings, attach files from OneDrive or Dropbox, and of course, login with a variety of different email services (Microsoft Exchange, Gmail, Outlook.com, Yahoo Mail, iCloud, etc.).

The app is built beautifully with sliding animations, there are swipe gestures that archive/delete/schedule messages (like in Inbox or Mailbox), a unified inbox that tries to surface your most important email first can be toggled on, and the integrated calendar is quite lovely. Oh, the ease of adding files once you have your accounts attached is quite remarkable.

The app is in “preview,” so it still has some work ahead of it, but man, this is fantastic first effort. I may even ditch Mailbox for a few days and give it a real shot.

A couple of weeks ago, Dropbox announced that it had partnered with Microsoft to include Office integration within its web and mobile apps. The move is a big deal for Office users, as they can access and edit Office documents from within Dropbox, a cloud storage solution that can be reached from just about anywhere and on any platform. In a blog post today, Dropbox announced that the new functionality is now available on Android.

To get started, they remind you to update to the newest version of Dropbox, then open any Office document, spreadsheet or presentation from within Dropbox. You should see an “edit” icon that will let you start editing. Once you are finished editing, your document will then save automatically back to Dropbox.

Give it a shot and let us know how it goes.

Microsoft is stepping up its productivity game with changes to Office on Android. The company recently announced Dropbox integration, and this morning, made Office consistent with the company’s offering on iOS by removing the Office 365 subscription requirement. Microsoft also unveiled a tablet-optimized version of Office for Android, which enters closed preview starting today.

Office 365 subscribers will continue to receive additional benefits like unlimited OneDrive storage and advanced editing capabilities, but the base Office experience is now completely free. Considering the wealth of productivity apps on Android, not to mention Google’s own Drive suite, dropping the paywall was probably a necessity. Still, however long overdue, the change will surely be appreciated by those invested heavily in the Microsoft ecosystem.

In more exciting news, Android is gaining the version of Office released for iPad earlier this year. Designed with larger displays in mind, it features touch-optimized tools that mirror Office on desktop. It is not rolling out widely just yet, but you can sign up to preview the application before its official release.

Dropbox announced a partnership with Microsoft today, which will bring integration of Office services into the online storage app and vice versa. Once updated for Android, Dropbox users will be able to edit Office files from within the storage application, and Office users will be able to access Dropbox files from the Office app.

In addition, the Office app will feature the ability to share links associated with files in your Dropbox account, allowing users of both services to get much more work done within a single app instead of using both simultaneously.

Here is a look at the full upcoming changelog.

  • Edit Office files from the Dropbox mobile app and sync changes across devices. Create a file at home and finish it on the go — any edits will automatically save to your Dropbox.
  • Access Dropbox files from the Office app and save new files to Dropbox. You can now sync your docs and keep them safe without leaving the Office app.
  • Share Dropbox links from Office. When you’ve finished making changes to your document, you can instantly share it by sending a Dropbox link to colleagues or friends.

These features will rollout to Android and iOS users over the next couple of weeks. Keep your eyes peeled.

As QuickOffice quietly moves towards obsoletionGoogle is doing its darnedest to integrate all of the deprecated app’s features into its office suite. If today’s massive updates to Docs and Sheets are any indication, the team is nearly finished.

The biggest addition to both apps – native support for Microsoft Office file formats like .docx and .pptx – was announced at Google I/O, and it seems to work as demonstrated – apart from minor formatting inconsistencies, Docs and Sheets interpret Office documents fairly well. They can be created or imported –  Office files opened in Drive/Sheets are fully editable, of course – and uploaded to Google Drive without limitation. Helpfully, the Docs and Sheets file list differentiate between Docs and Office filetypes.

Both Docs and Sheets are now compatible with Android L, and appropriately have UIs more in line with the developer preview. They’re rather conservatively redesigned – it’s abundantly clear Google is carefully strutting the line between Holo and Material Design – but cleaner and more colorful. A blue titlebar and highlights adorn the Docs app, green for the Sheets app. A floating “new document” button makes an appearance in both.

The features of the update extend way beyond Office compatibility and a tweaked interface. Some of the highlights include a new editing UI and better spellcheck in Docs, charts, formula lists, and autofill in Sheets, and the ability to send files as PDFs or Word or Excel documents. We’re waiting on official changelogs from Google, but we’ll update this post as we notice any other notable changes.

Even though a lot of us have invested in the Google ecosystem for our document creating and editing, Microsoft Office is still a giant in the game. Up until today, editing and sharing Office documents through mobile wasn’t accessible or it cost money if you were not on a Windows device.

Today, Microsoft is changing up its strategy.

In a post today on its blog, the Office team announced that its Android mobile app is now free to download and use to your heart’s content. As long as your Android phone is running Android 4.0 or up, and you are using Office for home use, you should be in the clear.

Office users who are using the service in a business situation need a paid Office365 subscription. At least it’s a step in the right direction. In addition, tablets are not supported quite yet.

The update is live in Google Play, so if you have not grabbed it yet, hit the link below to bring Word, Powerpoint, and all of the MS Office goodness to your phone.

As of today, Microsoft does indeed have plans on releasing Office for Android devices. Over the past couple of months, we’ve been questioning when exactly this was going to happen after having received bits and pieces of info, but nothing official. Finally, that has changed this morning as new info and even screenshots have hit the web via The Verge.

Thanks to their sources, Office is confirmed for both iOS and Android devices with a rough release time frame of Q1 of 2013. The apps will be free for those with a Microsoft account, but to use certain features in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, the user will need a paid Office 365 subscription.

Well, glad that all the rumors can be put to rest. It’s coming and now we wait patiently like we always do.

Update: A tweet has been sent out from Microsoft’s Frank Shaw stating that the info is incorrect.
