The day before CES kicked off for us, our buddy kovdev pushed a few icon packs to Google Play. Now that we are back home, on a much better Internet connection, we can take a look at what Dave has been working on.

The new packs are called Illus, Dekk, Omne, and Merus. Each pack looks rather clean and minimal, with a couple of them featuring flat appearances, and Illus showing off the long shadow technique which kovdev has mastered in the past couple of months.

To sum up their looks best, Illus is a square pack with long shadows, while Dekk and Omne feature rounded corners and flat art. Merus is a circle icon pack, but is flat and colorful.

Each pack features its own set of wallpapers, but thanks to the implementation of the Cloud, buyers have access to all of kovdev’s wallpapers. Access to the papers make each of these $1 apps completely worth the purchase. If you rock a 3rd-party launcher, like Nova, head on over to Google Play and check these out.

In related news, if you follow Dave on Twitter, then you may have seen that he has started a new job at Cyanogen Inc. Wish him luck!

The kovdev team is back again with another icon pack, this time tackling their vision for what round icons should be. If you did not already know, kovdev is headed by Dave Kover, who you might catch around the DL sphere from time to time. He has been pumping out quality icon packs and themes on Android for quite some time, such as Nox and Stark, so we always get a little giddy when he releases new work.

His newest pack is called Audax, and as you can see, it is a circle-based pack. While countless circle packs were hitting Google Play earlier this year, it appears that kovdev would rather take their time, meticulously going over each icon to make sure they were just right before finally being released to the public. If you ask us, the wait is worth it, considering this pack could reinvigorate the freshness of circles on your home screen.

In total, users will have access to 2000+ icons and plenty of cloud-based wallpapers which you can download to your device.

For those who may download and use with one of your custom launchers (most 3rd party launchers are supported), kovdev recommends bumping up your icon size to 130%, which gives off the Google Now Launcher (GNL) feel and experience.

Priced at just $1.99, users can also expect to see updates going well into the future for this icon pack, so go check it out and let Dave know what you think in the comments below.

At the beginning of this month, we teased the upcoming Domo icon pack from kovdev, better known as our friend and occasional DL Show participant Dave Kover. His icon packs are well known throughout the Android community, and Domo will certainly add to his reputation as an icon artist.

Domo carries a nice mixture of shadow and texture, with the slightest hint of 3D visuals. While the icons themselves are gorgeous, I’m more of a wallpaper kind of guy, and Domo completely delivers on that front. On top of the 1650+ icons available in the pack, with timely updates always taking place, Domo also features 20 HD wallpapers. And yup, they’re sexy.

The icon pack costs just $1.99 on Google Play. If you use a third party launcher which allows for custom icon packs, go check it out.

“What’s that wallpaper?” “Wallpaper please.” “I do want that wallpaper.” I think someone even recreated it from the video. Yes, I’m talking about the wallpaper I shouldn’t have exposed in last night’s AcDisplay video. Never have I seen such a response to a wallpaper that I wasn’t allowed to share. But that’s how it always works, right?

Thankfully, we can finally talk about that wallpaper, plus the app it came from. That app is called Domo, and it’s the latest icon pack from our friend, Dave Kover (kovdev).

Like all of Dave’s work, Domo is of the highest quality in terms of detail and range. There are over 1,600 icons, support for all of the major launchers (Nova, Apex, Action, etc.), and of course, includes 17 beautiful wallpapers. The icon pack carries some shadow (just not the overkilled long shadow), some dimension, and a crease down each icon that provides subtle lighting highlights. Kover describes it as “Perspective. Touch. Feel. Love.” I like it.

The pack drops April 11, so mark your calendars.

Here at DL, we have become fans of Roman Nurik’s latest creation, the Muzei live wallpaper. It lets us forget all of those hours of heated internal debate on deciding which wallpaper looks the hottest, and has essentially claimed its rightful place on most of our home screens.

Yet still, Nurik has only partially solved the whole problem with his newest app, because even now, we have to decide between hordes of different third party Muzei extensions, a problem I think we don’t mind having. The app displays wallpapers in such a beautiful way and there are so many good extensions already, that it’s quite fun seeing each outdo each other.

Which are the best five for the month of March? Let’s check them out.

1. MultiMuze

MultiMuze has easily become my favorite Muzei extension, because of the fact that it really isn’t fundamentally one. What MultiMuze does is allow for the use of multiple extensions, in case you’re like me and can’t simply choose one source of wallpapers. It comes with customization settings allowing you to choose the intervals for which your source changes, and also which of your sources to use when shuffling them.

I haven’t personally experienced any issues while using MultiMuze, so this guy right here is my absolute favorite extension for Muzei at the moment. And it’s even free.

2. Muzei Music Extension

With the launch of Android 4.4 “Kit Kat,” we saw the introduction of lock screen album artwork. Basically, when you are playing music on a Kit Kat device, it will replace your lock screen wallpaper with your current album’s cover picture. This has actually become very handy for many of us, and it’s certainly one of the features I miss when I switch to my Xperia Z1, which is still stuck on Jelly Bean.

Muzei Music looks to bring the same feature to your home screen, but with a few cool enhancements as well. First of all, you can select an image for Muzei to use as your wallpaper when you aren’t playing music, so you aren’t forced to stare at a black screen when not playing music. Second, you can automatically download artwork for songs you don’t have images for from Last.fm, and tweak settings for this so as to change the resolution of downloaded artwork and set it to not download over a mobile data connection.

Be sure to know that this is probably not the best extension to use with MultiMuze in case you were looking into that, as that will cause this extension to only come up sporadically. Also, some music players require notification access and a specific version of Android to function correctly, but this shouldn’t be too much of a worry — in case it doesn’t work with your music player of choice, it was free anyway.

3. Cast for Muzei

Chromecast owners, you know those pretty backgrounds your device shuffles through when you’re not using it? It turns out there’s a legitimate source for those pictures, and developers can even tap into them to add them for viewing on Muzei.

There are no settings to be tweaked here whatsoever — your wallpaper background will behave just as Chromecast’s, and should even update at the same time. Check this free extension out.

4. Taskei – Tasker for Muzei

For those of you who can’t live without an insane amount of customization, Tasker has had your back for the longest time. Now, here it is, available on Muzei to seriously refine when, where, and why certain sources should trigger. Now, I’m not going to pretend to be a Tasker maestro here, but it shouldn’t be too difficult to set situations up where certain sources only trigger when your phone is on WiFi, has headphones connected, or it is a certain time of day.

I wouldn’t recommend this one to everyday users, but for those of you who can’t live without really digging in and customizing the heck out of everything, give this one a peek.

5. Muzei – Reddit

For those of you who spend all eternity on Reddit (shoutout to r/Android!), for the sexy wallpapers or otherwise, it may please you to know that you can now get all of those new subreddit pictures as wallpapers on your device. You basically either choose from a list of subreddits or add your own, as many as you’d like, and the extension will cycle through them. I recommend using r/earthporn, r/spaceporn, r/apodstream, r/wallpapers, and r/exposureporn for an optimum hot wallpaper effect.

This one is also available as a free download.

If you caught Wednesday night’s Droid Life Show, and last week’s Droid Life Show, you might have heard us mention an upcoming icon pack from kovdev, titled Lumos. The pack is now live on Google Play and it’s the best way to breathe new life into a device. As long as you are sporting a third party launcher such as Apex, Nova, or Action Launcher that allows the applying of icon packs from Google Play, then you will definitely want to check this one out.

Lumos is based around understated subtleties, as there are no super bright or exotic colors. There is a light that shines down from within the icons, which casts a soft shadow on each one, revealing a somewhat 3D effect. We don’t know the true elements of the icon pack, so who better to explain it than Dave Kover himself.

The idea behind Lumos is reduced light from a central, off-icon lighting source. The icons have a soft color palette and beautifully curved corners. We’ve brought back the long shadow, which now offers a bit of dimension, to contrast with the matte appearance of the other elements. These icons are designed to be easy on eyes. The soft tones allow them to blend in with appropriate wallpapers, waiting for you to notice them.

It is now on sale through Google Play for $1.99 and includes over 1450 icons, plus a ton of gorgeous wallpapers.

Check it out.

Icon packs, when coupled with third party launchers, are a quick and painless way of giving your device a new look and feel. Our good friend Dave Kover, aka kovdev, released yet another icon pack that we feel could be one of his best yet. His previous works, which we have featured before are Tersus, Lustre and also Stark. The newest pack is called Nox and it brings a very interesting vibe to anyone’s homescreen.

Each icon features a shadow which is casted from each individual app’s icon itself. The colors are bright, crisp, but the subtle shadings bring an almost 3D-like effect which I haven’t seen any other icon pack do properly. As everyone knows, we are also suckers for wallpapers and Nox has a good handful of walls.

The pack is $1.99 on Google Play, so go check it out if you have been looking for a change

Some months ago, Google began to allow top application developers in Google Play to respond directly to user comments through the web interface. As of today, it isn’t just for top developers. Just recently, our buddy Dave Kover (aka Kovdev) found that he has the ability to do the same, as well as other app developers that aren’t considered “huge.”

Comments

This new features gives a direct line between consumers and developers, which is great for both parties.

Now go forth and comment.

Cheers Kovdev!

One of the cool things we can do with our Android devices straight out of the box is download a custom launcher and then apply icon packs that will drastically change the way an application’s icon appears. Take the above screenshot for example – I have Nova Launcher installed and have Kovdev’s Tersus icon pack applied. It gives each icon a uniformed square and minimal look. It’s clean, pretty, and super easy to do.

There’s a few steps to this process. First, you will need a 3rd party launcher such as Nova or Apex. As a note, most icon packs only support either Nova, Apex, Go Launcher, ADW, LauncherPro, and a few others. When downloading an icon pack from Google Play, you can check its compatibility in the description. Download a third party launcher of your choice and let’s get started on applying an icon pack.

Downloading and applying icon packs:

During this post, we’ll be using Nova Launcher which is our favorite. You can download it here on Google Play.

1.  Find the icon pack you want to install on Google Play.

You can see a long list of them here, but we always recommend Kovdev’s work. It’s clean and there are plenty of options to choose from.

2.  Download and install the pack you have chosen.
3.  From the homescreen, locate the Settings menu of the launcher you are using.

Since we’re using Nova, this may be slightly different from the launcher you’re using. The Settings menu is located in the top right of the app drawer while it is open. Check pictures above for clarity.

4.  Hit “Look and Feel.”
5.  Under “Icon Theme,” choose the icon pack you have downloaded.

It will then automatically apply all of the existing icons and matching apps together. And that’s it. It’s a simple and easy way to customize your device to the way you want.

Applying a single icon from a pack:

But Tim, what if I don’t want a full pack? I just want a single icon applied, how do I do that? Fantastic question and here is how to do it!

1.  Decide which icon you want to customize.
2.  Move it to a homescreen.
3.  Longpress on said icon.

Again, we are using Nova, so the instructions may differ given which launcher you are using.

4.  Hit “Edit.”
5.  Then press on the application’s icon.
6.  You will see a menu. Hit “Icon Pack.”

From here, you will see each icon that resides in the pack. You can choose whichever icon you want to use for that app on a homescreen. It will not change the app’s icon in the app drawer, but only on a homescreen where you applied it.

7.  Once selected, hit “OK.”
