Big news from Synaptics today, with the company announcing that we will finally get a look at under-display fingerprint reading technology next month at CES. Not only will Synaptics be demoing Clear ID Optical Sensors for all to see, but according to them, it will be showcased on a Tier 1 (flagship) device from a “Top 5” OEM.

Oh yes, this is all hands on deck news, folks.

Now, we’ve heard about Synaptics working with OEMs on this tech before, but the biggest name that gets shopped around when it comes to under-display fingerprint readers is Samsung. According to reports, the Galaxy S8 might’ve had this exact technology onboard, but time constraints forced Samsung to abandon it. At this same time last year, Synaptics unveiled its FS9100 optical sensor, which we believe was intended to ship with the Galaxy S8. Due to the aforementioned timing issues, it could be the Galaxy S9 that receives this highly sought after upgrade.

Stated by Synaptics, “Clear ID performance is twice as fast as 3D facial recognition and requires only one touch to access your smartphone.” At CES, the company will show off the FS9500 optical solution, which is the latest generation.

Now, while signs may point to Samsung for something like this, it’s entirely possible it will be a different OEM. What we do know is that it’s a Top 5 OEM, meaning it could be Samsung, OPPO, Huawei, Vivo, or Xiaomi. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

Maybe CES won’t be such a drag this year after all?

Now that we know for sure that the Huawei Watch 2 will get the update to Android Oreo, it may have jumped onto your shortlist of potential smartwatch purchases this holiday shopping season. If it has, then I have even better news for you. Best Buy dropped the price of the Huawei Watch 2 by $120 and the Huawei Watch 2 Classic by $150, today.

At those massive discounts, you are looking at the regular Huawei Watch 2 at just $179.99 or the Huawei Watch 2 Classic at $219.99. While those aren’t $75 Wear24 prices, those are pretty significant discounts on watches that will likely last you a while. Remember, Huawei knows how to make a good smartwatch.

To recap, the Huawei Watch features Android Wear 2.0, along with a GPS, heart rate monitor, NFC, 1.2-inch circular AMOLED display, Snapdragon 2100, 4GB storage, 768RAM, and IP68 water and dust resistance. These are decked-out Android Wear watches.

Huawei announced its new flagship phones this morning, the Huawei Mate 10 (pictured below) and Mate 10 Pro (pictured above). These phones have been reported about, thanks to leaks, for weeks and weeks now, but we’ve been handed the official details to share. So here’s the story.

Like with most Huawei phones in recent years, even if they look incredibly impressive (which these do), we have no idea when we’ll ever see them in the US. Huawei did tell us that “US pricing and availability will be announced at a later date,” so that’s at least promising in terms of them showing up here one day. In fact, that leads us to believe that the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro are indeed coming, we just hope it isn’t 6 months down the road. Then again, if we assume these are a part of the big Huawei-AT&T mash-up we keep hearing about, I guess we do have some time still.

But enough of that, what if you aren’t in the US or simply want to import the next big thing from Huawei? These are the details to know.

We’ve got the Huawei Mate 10 and the Huawei Mate 10 Pro. As the names suggest, the Pro version should be the better version. With that said, it sounds like the Mate 10 Pro lacks the SD card and headphone jack of the regular Mate 10, plus its display drops to 1080p from QHD, which would be downgrades for the most part. It does have IP68 water resistance, though, so there’s something.

As for other details, they both run Huawei’s Kirin 970 octa-core processor, have dual Leica-branded camera setups (20MP Mono + 12MP RGB, both f/1.6, OIS), 8MP front cameras, 4000mAh batteries, and Android 8.0 Oreo under EMUI 8.0. The Mate 10 sports a 5.9-inch QHD LCD display (16:9) with front-chin-situated fingerprint reader, 4GB RAM, and 64GB storage. The Mate 10 Pro moves the fingerprint reader to the back to make way for a 6-inch 1080p OLED (18:9) that cuts out most bezel, along with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage.

The phones are also very glass-like and are quite pretty. I know that the design with that band across the back has offered up plenty of fun in the comments, but I tend to like both the color schemes and that design detail/

The Huawei Mate 10 will arrive in late October for €699. The Mate 10 Pro will arrive in mid-November for €799.

A high quality render of the Mate 10 Pro from Huawei has hit the web, courtesy of @evleaks. After glancing through comments on his tweet, this appears to be one of the most polarizing Android devices in some time, even though it doesn’t look all that weird to me.

On the backside we have a dual camera system, Leica branded, with a fingerprint reader sitting below that. The front is basically a massive display, with minimal top and bottom bezel. In terms of overall design, that’s about it.

For those who may think this device is odd looking, I suppose I get where you’re coming from. The back appears to have two massive camera sensors, with the circular fingerprint reader below that. It’s an odd look with so many circles, but considering those cameras are sure to be killer shooters, you won’t find me complaining. You may also not care for the differently colored band that goes across the backside. It’s different, but not terrible, right?

Huawei is expected to announce the Mate 10 lineup of devices later this month.

Thoughts?

Huawei has a new lineup of phones on the horizon and the first to be detailed pretty deeply is the Mate 10 Lite. Posted by VentureBeat, the Mate 10 Lite is apparently the more affordable option in the Mate 10 lineup, with there being three devices in total. There’s the Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro, and Mate 10 Lite.

According to the report, the Mate 10 Lite will come equipped with a 5.9″ FHD+ display (18:9 aspect ratio, 1080 x 2160), Kirin 659 processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, dual rear-facing cameras (16MP + 2MP), 3,340mAh battery, and Android 8.0 “Oreo” with Huawei’s custom EMUI skin running on top.

If none of this jumps out at you, remember, this is the Lite version, with the standard and Pro models sure to blow spec sheets away.

As reported, the Mate 10 Lite is said to launch on October 16 in Munich, with shipping scheduled for a month later. Pricing is said to be €379, which is about $455 USD.

For us in the US, the Lite version may not get much attention, but this design and spec sheet is a good indication of what we can expect from the standard and Pro models. As more details are made known, or when Huawei makes these devices official next month, we’ll let you know.

If waiting isn’t your thing, a photo of the Mate 10 also made its way online recently, courtesy of @evleaks.

According to consulting firm Counterpoint Research, Huawei has surpassed Apple for the first time in global sales, making them the #2 smartphone brand in the world, for the time being. While Huawei is not the most popular brand here in the US, the China-based OEM has great presence in Asia, Europe and Latin America, big enough to take away Apple’s positioning.

As I hinted, this rank may not last forever, though. Because Huawei has little presence in the US (maybe not for long), Apple could overtake with the upcoming launch of its new iPhones.

Detailed in the graph, both Huawei and Apple sit a little above 10%. In a world full of countless smartphone brands, that’s pretty good. However, in a world with Samsung, who has a presence in every market imaginable, it’s hard to compete if marketshare is the only thing you’re trying to compare.

World’s Most Popular Smartphone Rankings

Even though Samsung has the most marketshare, they do not have the most popular smartphone. That award belongs to Apple with the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, being #1 and #2, respectively. In fact, on that list, Samsung ranks at #5 (Galaxy S8), with OPPO holding the #3 and #4 spots. Beyond that, we have Xiaomi, then more Samsung and Apple rounding out the top 10 popular devices in the world.

If you’re Huawei, the moral of the story is, take the US market seriously. Get on carriers, market your device heavily, and pray the device is well received. After the Nexus 6P launch, Huawei had a real shot at brand recognition, at least among American Android nerds, but things will only get harder the longer Huawei waits. If reports are accurate, and AT&T does intend to carry a Huawei flagship next year, that could be a big deal.

Keep at it, Huawei.

Huawei Australia’s Twitter account is hyping up the company’s upcoming Huawei Mate 10 smartphone, throwing a bit of shade at Samsung and its recent announcement of the Galaxy Note 8. Now, I’m not here to say whether Huawei is in a position to do this, but if they’re feeling frisky and confident in its new hardware, that’s fine with me.

In the tweeted media, it says, “Welcome to the Dual Camera Family.” Basically, Huawei is knocking Samsung for taking so long to introduce a phone with dual cameras. They also show the outline of what we assume is the Mate 10, complete with what should be dual Leica-branded cameras, scheduled to be unveiled on October 16.

After reviewing the Mate 9, I came away very impressed with Huawei’s offering. The phone is large, great for anyone who enjoys playing games or watching videos, and it also had a massive battery. The software on Huawei devices is getting quite nice, too. The problem is, Huawei still has yet to really establish itself in the US smartphone market. According to a report from earlier this month, Huawei and AT&T have struck a deal for the carrier to sell one of the OEMs upcoming flagships, so that’s a step in the right direction.

Is anyone here excited for the Mate 10?

According to a report from The Information, AT&T is expected to carry a Huawei flagship in the first half of 2018. Why is this a big deal? Well, because Huawei hasn’t yet had one of its top-tier devices on a US carrier, making this a pretty big step for a company that longs to be competitive in the US market.

Previously reported back in March, AT&T and Huawei were in early talks to begin testing the Kirin processor on AT&T’s network. We must assume that all went well, given the latest development.

As it stands, Huawei is ranked #3 in terms of global smartphone marketshare, not far behind Apple and its #2 position. Both trail Samsung at #1. With AT&T potentially allowing Huawei to finally break through into the US market, that could be big business for the China-based smartphone maker.

If you’ll recall, not much attention was paid to Huawei in the US, that is until Google decided to partner with them to create the Nexus 6P. Following that, Huawei looks to have gained many fans in the US, and from the comments I read quite often, folks who own a Mate 9 sure do seem to love it.

Now, there are no specifics on which flagship this 2018 phone could be, but given the reported timing, it seems a good guess-timation that it might be the Mate 10 or even the P11. Reports and info are already flying around for the Mate 10, such as details on its EntireView display. Or, maybe, Huawei will have something entirely new by then?

Huawei on AT&T. Are you digging the possibilities?

The Huawei-made Mate 9 is already an affordable phone at $499, but for a limited time, you can get it for just $459 on Amazon, which makes this a pretty solid deal.

For phablet fans, it doesn’t get much sweeter than the Mate 9, with its large 5.9″ display and massive 4,000mAh battery. It also comes with Amazon Alexa, dual Leica-branded cameras, and dual SIM support. Sure, there’s no water resistance, but at under $500, I’m pretty sure that’s the only thing it’s missing.

If you need something less expensive, the Honor 6X is also discounted, down to a price of $175. That device comes with a 5.5″ FHD display, dual cameras, 4GB RAM, 3,340mAh battery, fingerprint reader, and Android 7.0+. For under $200, it’s a good option.

If you somehow missed it, check out our Mate 9 review below to get a sense of if this device is right for you. If you like big displays, big batteries, and a solid EMUI experience, it’s for you.

For those interested, you’ll now find the device in Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and the UK. Depending on the market, it carries a price of either £379.99 (4GB RAM + 64GB storage) or €449.99 (6GB RAM + 64GB storage). In total, the phone is available in 25 countries.

To refresh you, even though this phone doesn’t appear to be coming to the US, it sports a 5.15″ FHD display, dual rear-facing cameras (12MP RGB + 20MP monochrome), 3200mAh battery, microSD support, fingerprint reader, Kirin 960 processor, NFC, headphone jack, and EMUI 5.1 running atop Android “Nougat.”

As for US availability, Honor appears quite hesitant to say much. Whenever asked, the company falls back to, “it’s not planned at this moment.” I actually enjoyed the Honor 8 quite a bit, so it’s upsetting that we may not see the Honor 9 reach our shores. It is a rather handsome device.

Anyway, if you live in one of the markets that it is available, go check it out.

I’m always quite amazed at how much Android Wear devices can cost, with the Huawei Watch 2 being no exception. Considering Huawei ditched the premium materials for the standard Watch 2 (they did keep metal, leather, and all that jazz for the Classic), the company still launched the wearable with a price of $299 in the US.

Thanks to a deal over on eBay, you can grab a brand new unit for the price of $265, which is a savings of about $35.

If you missed our review, the main takeaway was my disappointment in Huawei’s ditching of that premium niche they owned. Yes, they have the Classic, but why not have the standard Watch 2 be the premium one, then have a Watch 2 Sport or something like that? Speaking purely about the watch, it’s a great fitness piece. You have the specs you’d want, plus Android Wear 2.0 which is a huge advantage over the last iteration.

Honor has had a busy 2017 so far, even though it may not seem like it in the US. In February, the Honor V9 was made official for China, followed by the Honor 8 Pro in April. This week, Honor has announced the highly anticipated Honor 9, but just like those other Honor devices mentioned, no US availability has been detailed.

For specs, the Honor 9 matches up closely with what previous reports detailed. It features a 5.15″ FHD display, multiple storage options that will affect the onboard RAM size, dual rear-facing cameras (12MP RGB + 20MP monochrome), 3200mAh battery, microSD support, fingerprint reader, Kirin 960 processor, NFC, headphone jack, and EMUI 5.1 running atop Android “Nougat.”

For pricing, Honor is again proving that it can deliver solid hardware and specs for an affordable price, with the Honor 9 starting at ¥2,299 ($340), then the top tier model (6GB RAM + 128GB storage) going for ¥2,999 ($440). That’s pretty darn good.

If you’re in the US or somewhere other than China and were looking forward to potentially picking up a Honor 9, you’ll have to remain patient. We should know more about global availability in the coming weeks, fingers crossed.

The Huawei Watch 2 Classic, the other version of the Huawei Watch 2 with a premium stainless steel case, is now available in the US for $369.99. Why this watch didn’t release alongside the regular, much-more-plasticky Huawei Watch 2 is something I still don’t fully understand, but that’s where we are.

This Classic version is mostly identical to the regular 2 in terms of specs. It sports a 1.2-inch round AMOLED display, Snapdragon Wear processor, 420mAh battery, 4GB storage, 768MB RAM, GPS, heart rate monitor, NFC, and IP68 water and dust resistance. The differences are in the strap (22mm) and the casing (stainless steel). In they US, they are both WiFi-only watches.

If interested, you can hit up that link below and buy the little guy today. If you need to know more, be sure to check out our Huawei Watch 2 review.
