This time next week, Samsung will have announced the Galaxy Note 7. Before that happens, though, let’s take a step back in time to late 2012. Nearly four years ago, we reviewed the Galaxy Note 2, and at that time, the Galaxy Note 2 was one of my favorite Android devices. I was getting pretty big into mobile gaming, and thanks to the 5.5″ HD AMOLED display, my gaming was on point. Keep in mind, though, not everyone shared my love of the bigger displays, Kellen included.

When reviewing the device, it appeared that Kellen’s biggest gripe was the overall size. Yes, the phone was large, but there was good reason for that size. While the display was big at 5.5″ (that was considered very large back in the day), it also came with a very big 3,100mAh battery. That was really big relative to what other smartphones were offering.

Anyway, to wrap up Kellen’s thoughts, he said he couldn’t wait to get back to his smaller Galaxy S3, but could understand why so many would fall in love with the Galaxy Note 2.

Below, I have added in his extra long hardware/software overview. If you have the time, it’s worth a look, at least to see how far Samsung has come in terms of software and hardware design. Actually, now that I think about it, their software hasn’t come that far at all, but the hardware is much better.

Over the years, we have continued to add new devices to our specs comparison chart of Samsung’s Galaxy devices. We started with the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2, because prior to those, Samsung was giving carriers their own custom versions of each and it was impossible to keep track of. But with those, we started seeing carriers adopt a single model, bringing consistency and a brand explosion to the Galaxy line. As you probably guessed, we went ahead and added the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge to the list to show how far Samsung has come over the years.

Keep in mind that the chart below doesn’t mention things like the Galaxy S6’s UFS 2.0 storage or LoopPay or its MIMO WiFi or metal and glass body or the fact that it supports both of the most popular wireless charging standards. So in reality, the two new phones go far beyond what this shows. Maybe going forward, we’ll have to ditch the format or figure out a way to add even more detail. The technology probably deserves the mention.

Either way, for at least one last time, this is how the new Galaxys stack up.

As for what’s new in each update, we wish we could exactly tell you. As of this moment, each device’s changelog simply states “Android OS enhancements.”

Each device will continue to run Android 4.4.2 after the updates, but other than that, it does not appear Samsung or AT&T are packing in any new features. If these logs change, we will be sure to update the post.

If you own one of these devices, and notice any changes after the update, feel free to let us know in the comments below.

Samsung made the Galaxy Alpha official this morning, a device that looks and thinks that it is every bit as high-end as other flagships. Unfortunately for the Alpha, its list of specs tends to disagree with that idea, so we thought a comparison to the rest of Samsung’s line-up of phones from the last couple of years was in-store to show just that.

The Galaxy Alpha is leading Samsung’s new design standards by incorporating metal in its casing, while continuing to use a variety of textures on its backside to bring a combination that could be quite delightful in hand. The frame (edges of the phone) is metal with chamfered edges that resemble other premium phones on the block, like the iPhone and HTC One (M8). The backside is still plastic, but has been given a matte finish to blend with the shine of the metal banding. By all means, this is Samsung’s prettiest phone to date.

But again, design isn’t everything. The Galaxy Alpha sports an HD (720p) display, small 1,860mAh battery, and no micro SD slot. The rest of its specs aren’t bad by any means, but when you compare the display, battery size, and flexibility of features to the Galaxy S5, it doesn’t quite stack up.

Still, would you be interested in the Galaxy Alpha?

The update adds support for Samsung KNOX 2.0, which includes features like Dual Persona, real time kernel protection, VPN framework, and a universal MDM client.

If the enterprise side of the update means nothing to you, then know that you are also getting a brand new keyboard, along with other Kit Kat goodies. Verizon’s changelog doesn’t get deep into the details, but you should see a revamped lock screen with enhanced media controls, the option to choose a default SMS app, restyled notification bar, wireless printing, and more.

The update has been approved by Verizon, so rollout to your handset should happen with a couple of days. To check for it, head into Settings>About Phone>System updates.

The Galaxy S3 on Verizon received the same update last week.

Keep in mind that the Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S3 have been confirmed by Samsung as phones on the list of devices scheduled to receive Kit Kat. They haven’t given us a release time frame, instead are leaving that responsibility to the carriers. With the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 on most carriers (sorry, Verizon Note 3 owners) having already received the update to Android 4.4, we should start seeing the Note 2 and S3 over the coming months. In fact, Sprint’s Galaxy S3 received Kit Kat last week.

Again, you should see an update on your Verizon Note 2 this week, just try to to get too excited.

Specs comparisons are always fun, especially when they involve new phones like Samsung’s recently announced Galaxy S5. While they only tell a portion of the story, putting specs for devices on paper gives you an idea as to how big or little the changes are from one device to the next. From reading your responses to yesterday’s unveiling, we get the feeling that most don’t consider the GS5 to be much of a boost over the GS4.

So we’ve taken the Galaxy S5 and put it up against the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note 2. This is as simple of a comparison as it gets, but it also shows what has changed and what hasn’t. I think it’s clear that Samsung gave us much of the same, but tried to show they can innovate in new areas, like with sensors, rather than with a QHD display.

Let us know your thoughts.

AT&T customers carrying around a Galaxy Note 2 from Samsung should see an update to Android 4.3 this morning, build number 317UCUBMK6. For those who own a Galaxy Gear smartwatch, you will now be able to connect the watch to the newly-updated device, thanks to the added Bluetooth 4.0 support. On top of Gear compatibility, users will benefit from Samsung’s KNOX security feature, which aims at protecting your device from bad software and hacking.

Samsung is also throwing in an updated premium suite of software, the same you would see on the Galaxy Note 3, and that list is as follows.

Premium Suite Features

  • PEN.UP
  • Group Play 2.5
  • Multi-Window (Note 3 Version)
  • Camera – Shot & Sound
  • Group Messaging
  • Samsung Link (Preload)
  • New Easy Mode
  • Samsung Apps
  • Knox

Make sure you are connected to WiFi and have a decent charge in your battery, then head to Settings > About device > Software update > Check for updates, and you’re good to go!

We have been discussing when the bulk of Samsung’s smartphone lineup could expect to see Android 4.3, which would include compatibility for the company’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch. After last week, when an internal document leaked with all of the supposed release dates for the 4.3 updates for each device, Samsung has now confirmed this morning that the updates will begin rolling out as early as today.

While each update for each carrier is different, which is exactly what we saw in the leak, at least one of them should start today according to the document we saw last week, beginning with the Galaxy S4 on Verizon. Although, that has yet to be confirmed by Verizon or Samsung. If you would like an unofficial look at what date you should expect to see an update, check out this post.

The update will bring Android 4.3 and Galaxy Gear support to each device, as well as Sammy’s Premium Suite of software; the exact same goodies you see on its current flagships like the GS4 and Note 3. These goodies include camera software, Multi Window enhancements, Easy Mode, and more.

If you start seeing the update to 4.3, let us know.
