Beyond the overall OS getting updated, Sprint states in the changelog that they are adding in an update to FM Radio software, hopefully bringing an enhanced radio experience to users.

If you happen to still rock a G2 on Sprint, get that update.

Like with the T-Mobile G2 update, AT&T is also not saying much as far as changes to expect. We are guessing (without having the phone in front of us) that you should expect to see notifications on the lock screen, more notification controls, revamped stock apps with Material Design elements, new navigation buttons, Smart Lock, and more.

The update introduces the phone to Android 5.0.2 and software version D80130b. The update weighs in at 617MB, so you’ll want to have plenty of battery or a charger nearby before updating.

To check for the update, head into Settings>General>About phone>Update center>System updates>Check now.

T-Mobile didn’t provide much in the changelog, but you should expect to see notifications on the lock screen, more notification controls, revamped stock apps with Material Design elements, new navigation buttons, Smart Lock, and more.

The LG G2 on Verizon is receiving an update to Android 5.0 Lollipop beginning today. I said “G2” not “G3.” That was on purpose, because this really is the G2 we are talking about and not the much-newer, less glossy, G3. The update is a big one that is talked about at length in a 6-page document posted by Verizon. We included all six pages below to quench your curiosity.

The new update for the LG G2 – seriously, we aren’t talking about the G3 – bumps the phone up to software version VS98039A. You will notice changes to the UI that mimic that of the G3 (now we are talking about the G3 for a minute), but with Lollipop style as well. Everything is much flatter and more modern, yet still has LG’s in-need-of-an-overhaul skin.

In terms of new features, Verizon claims that you can now swipe around in notifications from the lock screen, but I have a hard time believing that to be true. I just reviewed the G Flex 2, which ran Lollipop, and LG broke the entire notification experience. You’ll have to tell me how it’s working. You can also customize the way notifications are handled on a per-app basis, pin apps to your screen, search in settings, and play with floating action buttons throughout.

To get a sense for the whole update, feel free to check out our LG G3 Lollipop tour. The experience should be very similar.

If a phone is almost two years old, but can be had for an insanely cheap price, is it worth considering? Maybe as a device to tinker with? Maybe as a phone for a teenager? Maybe you broke your current phone and need something to hold you over until the Galaxy S6 drops? Or maybe you just like hoarding smartphones. Whatever the reason, we have two to look at today – Moto X (2013) Developer Edition at $199, and the LG G2 at $189.

Both phones come unlocked and should work just fine on AT&T with 4G LTE. Each is brand new, comes in original packaging, and were two of the best smartphones of their time when initially released in 2013. Still today, they should perform just fine for an average user.

Each phone also comes with free shipping. Think about it.

The LG G2 on Verizon is receiving an update today to software version VS98027A. The update, as far as we can tell, is nothing but a bug fixer.

Verizon uploaded new support documents that include this new software version, but the changelog appears to be identical to the changelog that came back in September when the phone was prepped for VoLTE. That software update was VS98025B

Things like enabling the option to opt-in for Advanced Calling 1.0, ISIS being renamed to Softcard, and a whole bunch of new bloatware versions are all listed here, all of which match the versions from the September update.

If you notice anything new that isn’t listed, be sure to let us know.

The update is live and rolling out now. To check for it, head into Menu Key>Settings>About phone>Software updates>Check for Updates.

The LG G2 on Verizon is receiving an update today (version VS98025B) that prepares it for the company’s VoLTE launch, which should happen any day now. Verizon told us back at the end of August that we should expect the service to go live within the “coming weeks.” It has certainly been a couple of weeks. We exclusively reported that the LG G2 would be one of the first VoLTE devices, so the update arriving now makes perfect sense.

So what’s in the update?

The update includes Advanced Calling 1.0, which is the blanket name for HD Voice and in-call Video Calling that comes with VoLTE. Once Advanced Calling is on your phone, and you are in a VoLTE area, you can place HD Voice calls to others on Verizon’s network who meet VoLTE requirements (own either a G2 or Galaxy S5, are in a VoLTE area, and have Advanced Calling) and quickly flip between video or non-video modes.

This morning, Verizon announced that it would launch VoLTE and HD Voice nationwide within the coming weeks. They also pinged us later in the day with clarification on how HD Voice calls would be treated compared to regular voice calls (in short: the same). As the evening has progressed, we have continued to learn additional details about Big Red’s full VoLTE launch, including the two devices that will be able to take advantage out of the gate, specifics on Advanced Calling 1.0, how both Video and HD Voice calls are billed, and what happens when a customer hands-off from WiFi to LTE.

Before we get into the specifics, below is a carefully crafted chart that compares Verizon’s VoLTE and HD Voice service to the other major players in the game, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint. As you can see, the big sell here for Big Red is video calling as a part of the service, something none of the others are currently offering.

verizon volte vs sprint tmo att

With that out of the way, let’s talk details.

Advanced Calling 1.0

Verizon is using the name Advanced Calling 1.0 to describe the package of HD Voice and Video Calling. From what I can tell, a customer will need to add Advanced Calling 1.0 to their service in order to place either type of call, assuming they have a compatible device. That may require them to update their phone as well. What I do not know yet, is if Verizon plans to charge a fee for this add-on or if it will be free of charge. I do know that customers will be able to find self-serve options for adding Advanced Calling 1.0 in their account through My Verizon or they can talk to a Verizon rep.

Once Advanced Calling 1.0 has been activated on your device, you will find an option for “VoLTE Call” under Settings>Mobile Networks on your phone. Toggling this on or off turns Advanced Calling 1.0 on or off.

Screen Shot 2014-08-26 at 8.53.25 PM

Verizon will update this Advanced Calling 1.0 page as we get closer to launch. You will be able to visit that to get started.

Devices

According to information passed along to us, Verizon will have two devices ready for VoLTE go-live, the Samsung Galaxy S5 and LG G2. There are all sorts of other devices that will be updated over time to work with VoLTE and HD Voice, but those are the first.

On a related note, there are accessories like wired or Bluetooth headsets that will work with HD Voice calls, but they need to specifically say that they support it.

Billing

As we mentioned earlier in the day, HD Voice calls are treated just like traditional calls. If you participate in an HD Voice call, it will count against your minute bucket, unless you have unlimited talk through your plan. No data charges apply when placing an HD Voice call.

As for video calls, things are much different. When you place a video call over VoLTE, the audio portion is actually billed as a traditional voice call, but the video portion is billed as data. According to Verizon, a user could consume 6-8MB of data per minute during a video call. In other words, if you were on a video call for around two hours, it could use up to 1GB of data.

Video calls placed over WiFi do not count against your data plan.

Placing Calls (HD Voice and Video)

With Advanced Calling 1.0 active on a VoLTE-ready device, placing a call is as simple as placing a traditional call. A customer would place a call through a contact, recent call, or dialer, just like they always have. The only difference is that the call quality should be much, much better, hence the name “HD Voice.”

If you would like to place a video call over LTE, Advanced Calling 1.0 will automatically create a group in your contacts with others who have video calling capabilities. So instead of trying to figure out who you can video chat with over LTE, Verizon will attempt to bundle them in a group.

Other Notes:

  • If you are on an HD Voice call (or Video Call through Advanced Calling 1.0) and leave a 4G LTE area, you will drop the call. According to Verizon, there is no mid-call hand-off to CDMA.
  • Video Calls can be handed off to WiFi and back to LTE. With a Video Call taking place over WiFi, customers should see a special icon indicating as much.

If you have any questions about HD Voice or VoLTE, be sure to drop them in the comments.

Cheers O!

A new update is hitting LG G2 devices on Sprint, which brings LG’s Knock Code to last year’s flagship device. The addition of Knock Code is the only thing listed in the changelog, so the update process should go rather quickly once you see it hit your device.

Knock Code allows users to set up a pattern lock for their device, which puts a square outline on your lockscreen, split up into quadrants. Then, like a game of old school Simon, you decide what the pattern will be that unlocks your device using the quadrants.

G2 owners on Sprint, be on the lookout for this update to hit your device.

Once downloaded, make sure you are securing your device from baddies.

With today’s launch of Verizon’s ALLSET prepaid plan with 4G LTE, a pretty solid deal on the LG G2 has come along for the ride. Should you decide to join the prepaid world, you can add-on a brand new G2 for $299. That is without a contract, of course.

If you were to buy the same G2 without ALLSET, it would run you $499. At $299, we are talking lower than Nexus 5 levels here, but you are getting a phone that is arguably better. Keep in mind that the G2, even though it is about a year old, is probably the most underrated phone from last year. It has a gorgeous 1080p LCD display, crazy good battery life, an awesome camera, and is pretty hack-able for the most part.

You can grab either the white or black model for $299.

According to sources of ours, Verizon prepaid is finally getting access to the carrier’s massive 4G LTE network come July 17. As those of you in the prepaid game know, Verizon has lagged behind others in terms of prepaid data speeds, leaving their customers on 3G-only, which is painful on Big Red’s incredibly slow CDMA network. That is about to change, but you now have to decide if their plan is worth considering.

On July 17, Verizon’s ALLSET prepaid plan, which features unlimited talk and text plus 500MB of data for $45, will gain 4G LTE access. BRIDGE DATA can be added to that plan to help grow the data bucket. Verizon’s site currently sells BRIDGE DATA at 500MB for $5, 1GB for $10, or 3GB for $20. Assuming those plan add-ons do not change before the 17th, you could get into Verizon prepaid with 4G LTE and have 3.5GB of data for $65 per month. Verizon is also running a promo that can land you another 500MB of free data just for signing up for auto-pay, so we could be looking at 4GB of LTE data with unlimited talk/text for $65.

Once ALLSET with 4G LTE is live on the 17th, you will be able to sign-up through Verizon’s website, direct/indirect channels, and by calling customer service.

Come launch, Verizon will sell new postpaid 4G phones that can be activated with prepaid pricing, there will be certified pre-owned devices like the Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5 available, or you can bring your own Verizon 4G LTE device.

A couple of questions we don’t have answers to are, “Will the speeds be full 4G LTE or throttled?” and “Will pricing for BRIDGE DATA change by July 17?” Hopefully the answer to both is “no.”

In related news, the screenshot below was taken from Verizon’s Testman site, which clearly shows that the LG G2 (which is a 4G LTE device) will be available on prepaid once it launches.

If you are planning to pick-up the LG G3 when it arrives on Verizon store shelves, prepare for a boatload of exclusive features that only the Big Red variant will carry. We are talking a slideout QWERTY keyboard, front physical dial pad, and an insanely high-res 2-inch front display. Think of the G3 with a set of features that no one has attempted to use since the death of the feature phone, in a good way.

Verizon and LG are really trying to change the game here, which is not surprising knowing Verizon’s past of tweaking flagship phones for the better. Think of the Note 2 and the added bonus users received with a “Verizon Wireless” logo placed on the physical home button. Better than a fingerprint scanner, right? Or what about the removal of features like Blocking Mode from Samsung phones that were nothing but a nuisance and bloatware. Think of the constant reminder that you always wished you had to show that you were connected to WiFi or that you should try to connect to a nearby network.

Verizon has always had you in mind when preparing to release a phone, which is why their version of the G3 will be unlike any other.

In case the sarcasm wasn’t thick enough or you are ultra-confused, we are referring to the image above that Verizon posted in a comparison of the G3 to the G2 through their Insider’s Guide. There are Photoshop fails, and then there are Photoshop fails. The proof is below since they will likely fix this before long. We got a good laugh out of it.

Update:  Boooo. Verizon pulled the page. Good thing we captured the magic below!

KnockOn, a security feature introduced on the LG G Pro 2 back at MWC, is making its way to older devices. Announced this morning by T-Mobile, current LG G2 owners on the network will receive an update this week, bringing the KnockOn feature to their devices.

With KnockOn, users can set a user-created pattern on their lockscreen, allowing them to stay away from the usual PIN or circular pattern unlock software that is used on all Android devices.

In addition to KnockOn, improvements for Google Wallet, battery life, Google security fixes, auto brightness, WiFi calling, and Visual Voicemail are also in tow. It’s a nice little update, for sure.

G2 owners on T-Mobile, be on the lookout for the update.

We aren’t seeing many good tech deals floating around today, but if you need an unlocked phone that will work with GSM carriers at an affordable price, you can grab a brand new LG G2 from eBay for $349.99. The phone supports AT&T’s HSPA bands, but does not appear to be ready for any LTE in the US. So yeah, a decent price on the phone, but limited connectivity.

The LG G2 was one of our favorite phones from last year (our review). We absolutely loved the camera experience it brought, along with its big beautiful edge-to-edge 1080p display, insanely long battery life, and incredible performance. The G2 is probably the most underrated phone of the last few years. Readers who own a variant are passionate about the G2.
