Engadget appears to be the first tech site to get a hold of the new Droid X by Motorola long enough to do a quick writeup. They put this beast to test by showing off it’s 720p video capabilities, new Motoblur, its size in comparison to competitors, a new keyboard, and so much more.

This comes only hours after we broke the release date news and the official announcement which is coming next week.

Some of the highlights…

Hardware: Looks slightly bigger than the EVO and has far more exterior details.

Screen: Might actually be 4.4″ and is incredibly crisp.

Motoblur: Running Android 2.1 and not what anyone expected but seems to be solid.

Camera: 8MP is nice, but the actual camera button made pics unclear at times.

Keyboard: Official Swype comes preinstalled and includes multi-touch.

Performance: The speed is remarkable.

Like I said, they put together a pretty good review for only having the device for a short period of time. They also have videos and an entire gallery that you must see.

Check out the rest of their writeup here.

Next Wednesday, June 23rd, Motorola and Verizon will take the stage with Google and Adobe to announce their next lineup of Droid devices which we’ve given a ton of coverage to over the last few weeks. (Droid 2 exclusives anyone?) We won’t be there, but don’t worry, we’ll have plenty of coverage as always.

Coincidence that this comes the day before the iPhone is released?

Usually our breaking news has to do with pictures or videos of new devices and their specs, but today, we’re going straight off of Verizon word. There has been a ton of speculation surrounding the release of the Droid X and Droid 2 by Motorola and we finally have a date for the release of at least one of them from multiple sources.

Over the last couple of days, Verizon stores were told to place t-shirt orders (like during the Droid Incredible launch) and prepare for an early opening with full staff on July 19th for the Droid X with new merchandising taking over store windows on the 18th.

The official announcement will be made by Verizon next week. (About time right?)

Start saving people, you have 34 days to find an extra lump of cash.

Who’s getting one?

In one of the new Droid X commercials just leaked by DL, we were introduced to a new multimedia app called EyeCon which sounded as if it could give you full control to every media device in your house. It also had us drooling. So what exactly is EyeCon?

We just received this EyeCon site from a reader which looks to be the exact software mentioned in that commercial spot. I recommend that you take a few minutes to browse through some of their video overviews and you’ll immediately see how amazing this app would be on a 4.3″ Droid X display.

You’ll also notice the “Android coming soon!” note in the top right corner.

Update: The EyeconTroller app is actually available in the market right now. Grab it for free from this link. After that, head over to this link to register.

Cheers matrix2004!

Over the weekend we got a hold of the commercial slides and scripts for the new batch of Motorola Droid 2 and Droid X commercials that are slated to run as we get closer to launch next month. After reading the scripts on these slides, you get a great feel for the level of power plus the new user experience you can expect from these 2 devices. You should really be excited after reading these.

First up is the slide at the top of the post and is the new commercial called “Digits”, made specifically for the Droid 2 (or D2). The biggest details we get from this appear to be its newly found grasp of Email Exchange, the upgraded keyboard and a 1.0GHz processor. Yep, the same 1.0GHz processor our initial source mentioned back in April. Here is the voice over part of the script…

“‘Does’ used to do a lot. Now it does even more. Now it does Email Exchange, so you can be hooked up to everything thing you need to do. Now it does 1.0GHz speed on a sleeker, more intuitive keyboard. It does and does and does. And the only thing it doesn’t do is ask for time off.”

Does 1.0GHz change your mind on the Droid 2? It definitely helps ease mine.

Two more commercial slides for the Droid X after the jump!

The second and third commercials were made to promote the Droid X, its 4.3″ display and a new multimedia app which we can assume is a part of the new Moto/Shadow/Ninjablur that has been rumored to be included in all new Motorola Android devices…

First up is the “Eagle Eye (NFL App)” commercial which talks specifically about the device’s 4.3″ screen and its ability to watch the NFL on the go in unbelievable quality.

And lastly, the “Media Mogul” commercial. In this commercial, a new EyeCon app is highlighted and apparently will come standard with the Droid X and allow you to manage every multimedia device in your entire house. A mobile media center as your smartphone? Sign me up.

Now obviously these could have been commercials that received the axe, but my gut is telling me that these have made the cut and will be hitting the airwaves in no time. I love the “Gattaca” feel that they all seem to be focused on and the features mentioned should help sell a ton of both devices, especially with the “Droid” tag slapped on them. Yay July release!

Can Verizon or Motorola announce these already?

Exclusive: Droid 2 and Droid X Commercial Slides, New Juicy Details is a post from: Droid Life

The Droid X is popping up everywhere and in new fashions all the time. Check out the latest photos which compare it to the size of the EVO 4G, the iPhone and in a battle that brought instant cackling laughter, to the Droid Eris. If you thought the EVO was maybe a little too big and bulky, you can think again. The Droid X is well, big baby. (Not Davis.)

We also get a couple of additional details with these pics. That is definitely the new version of MotoBlur. You can see the Twitter widget on screen, plus a new calendar/clock/Beautiful Widgets looking thing. Damn that screen has some real estate.

Rumors just surfaced that the Droid X (Xtreme) will be launching sometime in July (Yay!) and will feature a custom UI which is now being called “ShadowBlur” instead of Motorola’s previously awful MotoBlur. That pretty much matches up to what our sources have been saying for quite some time now.

The second part of these latest rumors pegs an August release date for the Droid 2 which will surprisingly be upgraded to Android 2.2. And then this is where varying stories from sources make everything a giant mess.

Our sources are standing by a July release date for both the Droid 2 and the Droid X. It should also be pointed out that the Droid 2 that we showed you yesterday was still running Android 2.1, so unless there has been some sort of a last minute delay to include 2.2 and a pushed back release date, there is still a good chance we’ll see them both in a matter of weeks.

Either way, we should all be getting “Xtremely” excited for both devices. (Yes! My Friday cheeseball moment.)

How many times is this damn device going to change names? The guys over at Phandroid just got a hold of some shots from what appears to be a Verizon marketing system. The shots all clearly state that our pal the Droid Xtreme, is actually the Droid X by Motorola.

From the shots below you’ll see a couple of interesting tidbits…

4.3″ screen. NOT 4.1″. (Just like we said.)

Browser type “Safari.” Huh? Is that a type-o?

And head over to Phandroid to see the rest of the shots.

Well, hello there Motorola Droid 2. We would like to officially introduce you to the readers of Droid Life. We saw your activation screen just the other day, but we’ll admit that it’s nice to finally see the rest of you.

What do you think everyone? Should we just sit back and gaze at it for a bit? Moment of silence for Droid 1? Throw a party? Be confused? Start saving?

As you can see, externally, it looks almost identical to the Droid 1. The keyboard is really the only thing to have undergone a complete overhaul and now lacks that giant gold D-pad (which no one used) and includes some puffier looking keys. There are also some minor tweaks to the lip which is covered, giving off a slightly smoother appearance. The battery cover no longer has that fingernail insert. And that’s basically it for the outside. The Droid 2 is all about the internal specs and a new version of Motoblur which doesn’t appear to be quite as intrusive as the versions we’ve seen on the Devour and Backflip.

Some of the juicy details we were given:

-Android 2.1 (unless Verizon pumps out a last minute 2.2 update to it)
-3.7″ screen
-750MHz OMAP processor
-Wi-Fi tethering
-8GB internal
-8GB SD card preinstalled
-Updated keyboard
-5MP camera
-New version of Motoblur
-No HDMI port
-No front facing camera

I wish I had a release date for you, but at this time, nothing has been completely confirmed to us. The Q3 rumors for which peg both the Droid Xtreme and the Droid 2 to be launched on the same day still seem pretty likely to tell you the truth. One of our sources also informed us of a 3 hour long training session taking place on June 22nd for all retail employees which could mean training for these 2 new devices and Froyo. Yay!

Oh, and one last gem for you…

Droid 2 Boot Animation:

Thoughts? No HDMI port or front facing camera, but the internals should make it worth it right? You all loved the Droid 1 styling so much and this is almost identical. Does that make it a must-have?

Who wanted a back shot of the Motorola Droid Xtreme? Well here you go. You can see the beastly 8MP camera is embedded in that hump which we all have mixed feelings about. And it indeed says “HD VIDEO” up there. It is also definitely running Android 2.1 which I know differs from our previous post. These new photos also confirm that it has the same styling as the Droid1 which is exciting to see.

One more front shot showing off the operating system:

Still not 100% sure on whether or not that is MotoBlur but it sure looks sort of like it doesn’t it?

Our source also completely squashed the “Shadow” codename. It’s definitely the Xtreme people. We will no longer be using it.

And if you missed out on our previous exclusive Xtreme shots? Check them out here.

The Motorola Droid X/Xtreme/Shadow is definitely turning into a must-have after seeing these latest pics. Look at that screen. It’s a thing of beauty.

So here is what our tipster gave us:

Android 2.2

9 home screens

No Motoblur

Dedicated camera button

“Very metal”

HDMI out

One more sideview:

Thoughts? With that “metal” casing it’s really shaping into a device that has that original Droid 1 feel sans keyboard. The last thing we needed was another plastic Incredible which lasts all of one pocket drop.

Stay tuned for more details…
