Kellex and myself have had no problems sharing our love for the new lineup of Sony Xperia devices. Today, Sony has announced that the new Xperia Z will receive an update to Android 4.2+ sometime shortly after the device’s launch, which is still a mystery except for sometime during Q1.

Xperia Z launches on JB 4.1, but will receive 4.2 shortly after launch. As always, we’ll share more info on this over the coming weeks on the blog.

And of course, we are still awaiting details on what carrier(s) we can expect to see the device launch on. This lack of information has sort of left us somewhat frustrated, given the Xperia Z and ZL are the first devices to come from Sony that have us legitimately excited.

Now would be a fantastic time for Sony to prove they have what it takes to compete in terms of hardware and recognition of people’s desire to be on the latest version of the Android OS.

Last night, Sony announced the Xperia Z, a device that at first didn’t seem like it would be all that intriguing considering the history of Xperia devices. Previously, the phones did feature some high-end specs and hardware, but since the phones never fared well with consumers and weren’t available on a range of carriers, they are sometimes forgotten. Well, it could be safe to say that might change with the new Xperia lineup.

The Xperia Z features a 5″ 1080p Reality Display, complete with 443ppi. It is powered by the Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, features 2GB of RAM and an amazing 13MP back-facing camera. What struck a chord with me was the overall build of the device – slim, sleek, gorgeous display, and that interesting physical power key on the side of the device. Overall, Kellen and myself are hoping it somehow magically finds its way to Verizon, but pricing and availability are still unknown.

Check out our full hands-on with the device and the waterproof test down below.

Last night during their CES press event, Sony announced two new phones, the Xperia Z and Xperia ZL. Both are extremely high-end phones, sporting 5″ 1080p displays and quad-core processors, however, they differ slightly in form factor.

I spent a couple of minutes with the Xperia ZL, the slightly smaller of the two, but came away more impressed because of that lesser bulk. The frame and body are small enough that the entire front of the phone is almost all display – gorgeous 443ppi display. It flies thanks to the Snapdragon S4 Pro and 2GB RAM. The custom UI that Sony has been tweaking over the years is actually pretty fluid and fine-tuned. And the camera at 13MP with an Exmor RS sensor is insanely good.

Both the Z and ZL will launch in Q1 of this year. The Z will launch globally and the ZL will only hit select markets.

For the first time in years, I will admit that I’m impressed by a Sony phone. Check out video of the device below.
