The “XFON” from Motorola is no longer much of a secret now that it has been both pictured and found cruising through the FCC. It’s the phone you are seeing above that leaked months ago, at least all signs point to that being the case. While Motorola could easily have some tricks up its sleeves for this device that will “wow” us in the end, current info from a recent GFXBench benchmark pegs this device as a mid-range Android handset.

According to the system info of a device benchmarked with the model number XT1058 (same as the “XFON), we’re looking at a dual-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor (MSM8960T) clocked at 1.7GHz and a 720p display. You can tell that it’s the MSM8960T rather than the MSM8960 because of the Adreno 320 GPU inside, which is the same GPU that you’ll find in devices like the Nexus 4. But yes, it’s only a dual-core processor that was released in early 2012 and not even the Snapdragon 400 (only an Adreno 305 GPU though) or 600 that Qualcomm is producing for 2013.

We’re also finding that it lacks a 1080p display thanks to the benchmark showing a resolution of 1196×720, which also suggests it will have on-screen navigation keys. But we already knew that it would. We aren’t exactly sure what size the display will drop in at, but we’ve heard both 4.0″ and 4.3″.

You can see from the benchmark that this is the Motorola “Ghost” and is headed to AT&T. “Ghost” is a codename we first reported back in mid-March along with a handful that Motorola has in the pipeline.

Last, the device tested was running Android 4.2.2.

Update: We are seeing stories floating about which suggest it could have some super secret processor and GPU combo that will dominate all phones and Google and Motorola are simply disguising it. I hate to say it, but with a screen resolution this low, coupled with a decent GPU and processor, these numbers aren’t anything to get overly excited about. Look, the Sony Xperia SP and Xiaomi MI 2A both crush the HTC One and Galaxy S4 in an on-screen test if you take these tests to mean anything. Both are running the same processor/GPU combo as the XFON, yet likely have half the RAM. These tests clearly do not show that we have something secret going on or that the XFON is going to dominate the One or GS4 overall. Benchmarks do not tell the full story, ever.

Here is the image pulled from its FCC filing. As you can see, it’s identical to the device pictured at the top of this post.

So, mid-range, right? I’d imagine that Motorola is going to make this device insanely cheap with a processor that old and a display straight out of 2012. Standards for high-end smartphones these days have risen to 1080p displays and the latest and greatest processor for Qualcomm, two things this phone lacks.

Keep in mind while this phone may be disappointing from a spec standpoint, it’ll likely run stock Android, see updates at an incredible rate, and utilize LTE networks.

The plot is thickening, Android fans. Tonight, FCC documents show a mysterious Motorola device, matching up in design to previous images we have seen, here and here. As far as what is in the FCC report, the only thing we can take away is that the device, model number XT1058 comes equipped with AT&T bands, Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11ac, and NFC capability. Beyond that, nothing else.

As mentioned, this device looks eerily familiar to the Motorola “XFON” we have seen pictured before, but of course, nothing can be certain until its made official by either AT&T or Motorola. The timing is an interesting factor, since Google I/O is just days away. Guess we will just have to remain patient.

Excited?

Images just hit Twitter from the @evleaks account, showing a “blackboxed” Motorola device with signs of it headed to AT&T all over. For starters, there is the huge AT&T logo in the notification bar, as well as AT&T’s 4G LTE logo running on top. This device (what we can see of it) does sort of resemble the XT912A that was pictured back in March, but with the black box doing its job of concealing the device’s true form, it’s hard to say.

In March, we wrote up three Motorola codenames, each of which that had a chance of landing on AT&T’s network. No specs were known for certain, but one thing that the devices shared in common was that each device ran Android 4.2+.

In the shots above, it is apparent that Motorola’s toned-down Blur skin is present on the device, but other than what we can see, it’s hard be certain on any specifics.

Update: Well, a picture of the back of the device has been uploaded. Information is extremely limited of course, but next to model, it reads “XFON AT&T.” If that doesn’t get the X Phone conspiracist folks going, I don’t know what will.

Thoughts?

Don’t worry, we’ve seen your tips hit our inbox. We are well aware that benchmarks for devices named “Google Nexus 4 LTE” and “Google X phone” are appearing through apps like AnTuTu. We also know that both have been rumored off and on over the last couple of months as potential Google I/O launch devices. But pardon us if we aren’t buying into these benchmarks being legit or giving us any reason to call anything as “confirmed.” Let me explain.

We’ll start first with the “Google Nexus 4 LTE,” since it’s the newest device to make internet rounds. After a couple of unconfirmed and “weird” rumors for this device floated about last week, a supposed benchmark from it is now available, leading some to report that this device along with Android 4.3 are confirmed. (Nice timing!) Funny thing is, if you actually own a Nexus 4 with stock Android (like I do), and run an AnTuTu benchmark, the device isn’t called “Google Nexus 4.” No, AnTuTu knows the name as “Nexus 4″ only. In fact, if you do an AnTuTu search for “Nexus 4,” you’ll get dozens of results back from real devices, but if you limit it to “Google Nexus 4,” you get four results of devices that may not even be the Nexus 4 (all pictured above to the left). Two are clocked properly at 1.5GHz, while the other two are are running Ice Cream Sandwich and who knows what kind of processor.

So what I’m getting at, is benchmarks can easily be faked. Toss on a custom ROM here, tweak a build.prop there, and I wouldn’t be surprised if you could trick the results into showing whatever you like. And that leads us into the next screenshot on the far right for the “Google X phone” and “Google X” running Android 5.0.1

First, we know that Motorola is working on new phones – execs from Google have admitted this time and time again. Do we know that one of them will be called the “X Phone”? No. Sure, we’ve seen a job listing for the project from Motorola with X Phone mentioned, but if anything, that’s a code name (or a troll job by Google), which typically do not show up on benchmarks. Second, it’s clear that someone tried to create these results just to stir the pot. We’ve got phones with varying processors, three different versions of Android, and one even going as far as to use the word “phone” in the name. Because phone manufacturers love to use the word “phone” in an official capacity at the end of their naming conventions. Can you imagine if HTC went with the “HTC One Phone”? You get the point.

Oh and what about the top result that shows “Android 5.0.1″? We’re pretty sure the next big release of Android is 4.3, not 5.0. You can find a handful of reports who are claiming to have seen Android 4.3 in server logs (we’ve got sightings in our analytics as well), still as Jelly Bean, but nothing on 5.0 and we’re two weeks from Google I/O. If Google were to unveil 5.0, we’d have seen some sort of trace of it by now.

In the past, we have used benchmarks to help shape stories and gather details about upcoming phones, but AnTuTu listings of a random phone name with a random version of Android is not a part of that process. If you want to find legitimate results, GLBenchmark is probably your best bet.

Motorola is indeed working on new phones, hell, we even have the real codenames for them already. But there are no signs right now that point to Google actually releasing an LTE Nexus 4. We’d love for that to happen, but anything related to it at this point is nothing but rumor. Thankfully, we are two weeks away from I/O and will find out for sure then.

We have heard a lot of rumors about Motorola’s next flagship phone, rumored to be the X Phone. We’ve heard that it’s not so impressive, we’ve heard that it’s very impressive, we’ve seen our share of renders, but we haven’t up until this point heard anything definite from either Moto or Google. The latest rumor that we are hearing is that Moto’s next device is going to be outwardly customizable.

Phone Arena is reporting through a source that they trust that says Google and Motorola are looking to provide up to 20 different colors of phones for customers. The source said that internal customization such as RAM size and processor differences is highly unlikely, but that we can expect to see lots of different looking devices. Take this with a grain of salt because it’s still an unverified rumor, but it opens up interesting possibilities.

Would you be excited to see expanded choices of colors for this upcoming phone?

During a conversation with PCMag, Motorola’s design chief Jim Wicks opened up about the future of their products, most importantly, those influenced by the newly formed Google exec team. Wicks make it sound as if the current state of the mobile industry, one that focuses on specs and a “bigger is better” mantra, isn’t where they are headed. They want stock Android devices that are updated quickly, phones that are the right size instead of oversized, and that reach all carriers.

According to Wicks, Motorola has spent the last eight months working on their next generation of phones that will arrive in the second half of 2013 (that could be July or November for all we know). More importantly, he stressed that if you are into smaller form-factor devices or stock Android, that you are going to be very excited. And when he says “smaller,” he means “just-right” in terms of size. If you look at the leaked Motorola device from early March, we’re talking a 4-4.5″ display size, which isn’t necessarily small, it’s just not following the massive trend by today’s standards. He also mentioned that while devices may be smaller, the display won’t be as they continue to work on slimming down bezels, much like they did with the RAZR M. Wicks acknowledged that “When you buy a TV, your’re not wanting a frame,” and that smartphones should be the same.

As far as his comments on stock Android are concerned, Wicks talked about how consumers “love what the Android OS can do for them,” and that they want to have the most recent releases faster. Motorola’s strategy is to embrace Android and make it the “best expression of Android and Google on the market.” It will be the “unadulterated” version of Android with as little bloatware as possible.

Last, while Motorola has seen success with its DROID brand on Verizon, they will attempt to mimic Samsung and HTC’s push to get their single flagship phones and form factors on all carriers. They will attempt to build new cross-carrier brands outside of those exclusive brands that are carrier-specific.

After hearing Eric Schmidt call Motorola’s next lineup of phones “phenomenal” this morning, this news has to bring you nothing but joy. Well, assuming you are fine with sub 5-inch phones.

Now that Samsung and HTC have announced their flagship phones for 2013, the boredom of the internet is shining through and focusing on whatever Motorola has in the pipeline. Each day, we’re getting a new reportedly rumored spec list for the X Phone from a new anonymous “tipster” that may or may not be real but seems to get reported anyway. That’s right, when times are this slow, the tech media appears to accept any and all fan speculation that comes through its inbox as having a slight chance at being legit, thus a need to report it with thirty question marks. I know that sounds harsh, as we like to hypebeast as much as anyone, but this is getting out of hand.

Take today’s “render” of the X Phone that just came across the wire. The rumored specs that have accompanied the image above peg the device as having a Snapdragon 800 processor, 4.7″ 720p display, onboard storage only, and a whopping 4000mAh battery (because 3300mAh wasn’t enough). The device will run Android 4.2 with as few customizations as possible.

Stop for a minute though, and take a look at that image above. You are telling me that Motorola created this render today, then put today’s date on it, and has already managed to leak it out? And why is it that if Motorola is doing their best to go with stock Android, that they are reverting back to the old Motorola navigation keys that they already went away from in Jelly Bean for devices like the Razr M and Razr HD. Two steps forward and another back? But on that same point, why are they using 100% stock Phone, People, Chrome, and Camera icons, but not navigation buttons. Ugh.

Update: As caleb pointed out in the comments, it also lacks an ear pierce, you know, for making calls since it is a phone after all. As per kunal, the 3-circle clock widget time is two minutes slower than the time in the notification bar. Mmhmm.

There are other new rumors floating about today as well, but they are all pretty much ridiculous and make little sense.

Hypebeast, we know about ya.

Well, we may as well get this Motorola hypebeast engine running, since the one and only Guy Kawasaki is ready to. For those not familiar with Guy, know that he was once the ultimate Apple fanboy, acting as an evangelist to the company for years, but has since moved onto to Android and is now serving as an advisor to Motorola in some capacity. One of his first goals for his new role is to create a community that talks about the future of mobile devices. In a recent post to Google+, he brings up an interesting idea, one that was actually rumored last week. Is this the first major hint at what we can expect in the X Phone?

In his G+ post, Guy asks a simple question – “Wouldn’t it be great if you could personalize your phone like this?” His post included a video of Porsche’s Exclusive program which allows you to customize your car at the time of order to include your choice of interiors, colors, spoiler, rims, and more. There are some 600 options to choose from, so that you can make the car of your dreams. So what if you could do that with your next phone? Is this a hint?

The timing of Kawasaki’s post is interesting because last week, our friends over at Android and Me heard from sources who suggested that Motorola will allow you to completely customize devices from them at the time of order in the near future. It could all start with the X Phone, which is rumored to launch around June, with an unveiling at Google I/O in May. While certain details have not been revealed, we would assume that Motorola would allow you to choose colors, storage amounts, and maybe even RAM or processor through an online store that would then be custom built for you. Think of the model that Dell first introduced some years ago.

And while we’re on the subject, we may as well talk about the other rumor coming out of Android and Me last week, which talked about the newest leaked Motorola device, how it is essentially an early prototype of the X phone, and that the back divot is actually a touch sensor. I’ll just say this – everything in that post, has been through our inbox as well from what I believe to be our own separate sources. While that’s about all I can say, feel free to read through Taylor’s points to get a pretty clear picture as to what we may see from Motorola this summer.

What do guys think, ready to customize a phone to your liking?

Via: +Guy Kawaski

The device, sort of deemed “mid-range” is actually far from being mid-range. In fact, the more you look at the specs, the more you can see that it’s as good as the Nexus 4, just not necessarily where the Galaxy S4 or HTC One sit because it lacks the newest processor available and a 1080p screen. But that device with model number XT912A could be our first preview at a new Google-powered Motorola. Gone was the kevlar backing and RAZR styling – in was a more rounded Nexus design. If this is Motorola’s next, though, will it be good enough to compete with Samsung and HTC’s newest? Or does Motorola have something else in the works. It appears as if they do.

“Ghost”

The Motorola “Ghost” is, as far as we know, the codename for the device we saw pictured last week as model number XT912A. A GLBenchmark for the device already exists with AT&T branding, so we know that it’s at least headed there. We’ve also heard from enough sources to expect this device to potentially arrive on all four major U.S. carriers. This is not the X Phone, but with somewhat older insides (processor and display), there is a chance that this phone drops in at a ridiculously reasonable price. We’re not sure if it’s going to the Play store or not, but it may stil be worth a look.

According to the benchmark, the “Ghost” is running a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro (MSM8960) clocked at 1.7GHz with a 720p HD display. It will have on-screen navigation buttons. The most recent benchmark showed it running Android 4.2.1, but Motorola now seems fully committed to having the newest version of Android on its phones and should deliver 4.2.2.

“Yeti”

The “Yeti” is yet another codename floating around as a potential future Motorola device. The only signs we’ve seen of this device, also include AT&T branding, so it could be another along with the “Ghost” that AT&T will get a shot at. All we have so far is the name mentioned with it running at least Android 4.2.

“Sasquatch”

The Motorola “Sasquatch” is the last codename that we are starting to spot, most recently at 0xbenchmark on March 13. We don’t have specs, but we do have it running Android 4.2.2 along with another mention of AT&T. As with the “Yeti,” we don’t have specs, just a mention that it’s a new Motorola device in the pipeline.

So without much to go on for the Yeti and Sasquatch, we’re simply sharing this to get both phones on your radar. Also, with both only showing as being attached to AT&T, we can’t help but wonder if these will follow in the footsteps of the Ghost, which is being tested on AT&T, but is largely thought to arrive on all carriers.

Be on the lookout.

A new Motorola device surfaced last night, giving a glimpse at what the now Google owned company may have in store for the future. The device goes by model number XT912A (RAZR was XT912) and <del>is definitely not the oft-rumored</del> X Phone (or is it?). What we are looking at is a mid-range device, but one that certainly looks more stock and less Moto than we have seen in some time.

The device is sporting a 4″ 720p display, 2GB RAM, Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2200mAh battery, and almost pure stock Android. The skin from Motorola has been broken down to almost nothing, with the newly featured left-side quick toggle menu seen on the RAZR HD now gone. You’ll see stock themed on-screen navigation keys, though those have been around since Jelly Bean on most Motorola phones. It really does look stock, outside of the circle Moto clock widget.

More importantly, this is a drastic change in styling for Moto when compared to the recent RAZR HD launches. The kevlar is gone and in are soft rounded edges, a circular camera, along with what appears to be a cascading edge-to-edge display edges similar to the Nexus 4.

Does this phone scream “Google!” or is it just me? Would love to hear your thoughts.

Outside of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One, I’d say it’s safe to say that most of the geeks around these parts care only about one other device – that’s the Motorola X Phone. Though Google’s CEO isn’t expecting any of Moto’s products to “wow” us over the next few months, the X Phone will continue to be on our radar, as all of Motorola’s have been in the past. There is a chance that it ends up wow-ing us, especially if Google shows that they have had any influence on its design, build materials, and software tweaks. With that said, there has been little tangible evidence to this point, so when we see purported leaks surface, we can’t help but be extremely skeptical. Take today’s for example.

According to AndroidWorld, in a rumor that is making all sorts of rounds today, a tipster submitted both the photo above and a list of what they believe to be the specs of the upcoming X phone. What you’ll notice immediately is a name change to “NXT”? That’s a first, and something none of our sources have ever mentioned as being the codename or official name of Motorola’s top secret project. Oh, we should also point out that there is a remark in the post itself by AndroidWorld which clearly suggests that this was a user created render and should not be taken seriously whatsoever. And that mention was made after the fact, since one of the commenters of the site posted up the render that the tipster took the creepshot of, since well, he created it and all. Moving on…

Here is the original:

Second, the specs do not make sense. According to this source, we’re looking at a device with a 4.7″ FHD display, 16MP camera, NVIDIA Tegra 4i chipset, 5MP front camera (with fancy eye scrolling tech), and a 7.9mm thick frame. While I would be OK with Motorola choosing the Tegra 4i for the X Phone, they would be eliminating Verizon and Sprint should they do so. The 4i doesn’t support CDMA, so unless this phone will be one of the first LTE-only phones, don’t put your money on it having an NVIDIA chip. And since Verizon is essentially Motorola’s biggest partner, they sure as hell aren’t going to eliminate them from their next big phone.

The 5MP front camera also seems like complete overkill. I get that the world is now filled with embarrassing VGA and 2MP selfies, but do we really need a 5MP shooter up top? This rumor mentions that the camera will be used for eye tracking, to scroll through documents, emails, and web pages automatically. Oh, that’s original…or maybe not.

Hate to say it, as I would love to finally see some concrete evidence of the X Phone, but today’s rumor is not that.

Back in January, Google CFO Patrick Pichette mentioned that Motorola had inherited 18 months of product pipeline that they would need to drain through before the company could focus on creating something completely new. We assumed at the time that he was referring to that period coming to an end with the RAZR HD and RAZR M, and that Moto would be working towards releasing their first set of products under new management some time by mid-2013. In what can only be considered sad news to Motorola fans, his remarks at today’s Morgan Stanley Technology Conference paint somewhat of a different picture.

Pichette mentioned once again that Motorola’s new CEO Dennis Woodside and crew had 18 months of product pipeline to go through, however, this time he used the word “upcoming” in the same sentence. That can only mean that the next phone(s) or tablet we see from Motorola will still be leftovers from previous management that the new Motorola will need to release.

To make matters even more depressing, he called them “not really like wow by Google standards.” Yes, he apparently held nothing back.

“The case with Motorola is that we’ve inherited a pipeline,” Pichette said, “Motorola has a great set of products, but they’re not really like “wow” by Google standards. Dennis Woodside and his team have inherited 18 months of pipeline that we have to drain right now.”

So what does that mean for the X Phone? Well, the X Phone could still be very real. At the same time, the reality of the situation suggests that if we do see this mysterious new “game changing” device from Motorola, it may not be until the end of 2013 or whenever this 18 month period is over with. For the foreseeable future, we could see another couple of leftovers from the Sanjay Jha era.

Feel free to express yourselves in the comments.

But then once Motorola either trolled us all or slipped up completely by listing a job opportunity for a director of product management for the X Phone team, we haven’t heard much. Well, until now, thanks to a rumor out of Australian electronics site, SmartHouse.

According to sources of theirs, who claim to have spoken with Telstra CTO Hugh Bradlow on the matter, the X Phone will be a “game changer.” It’s supposed to be a “real breakthrough” that will put pressure on Samsung and Apple, something no one in the smartphone industry has done in a couple of years.

What sounds most intriguing, is the mention of Google having worked on this device for a “long time,” so that they could pack in software features and capabilities that are not available on Samsung Galaxy phones or the iPhone. This new software “pulls together Google services like no other manufacturer has done in the past.”

Their sources also claim that the phone will be unveiled in May at Google I/O and will then hit retail shelves in July. This matches up to previous rumors.

Brainstorming software that has never been seen before sounds like an impossible task, so I’m not going to even attempt it. What I will do, is start counting the days to I/O, in hopes that Google pulls out the device we have all been waiting for.

Thoughts?

Weren’t buying into the hypebeasting of the Motorola X Phone, the company’s ultra-secret, next big smartphone? Does an official job posting for a position as the Senior Director Product Management for the phone make you a believer? The posting went up last night and includes the name and everything, just peek at a piece of the job description above.

Nothing specific is mentioned about the phone, but that shouldn’t surprise anyone. The job listing itself looks like it could meet the needs of any product manager. The key here, is the fact that it actually mentions the “X-Phone,” something many believed to be nothing but a myth.

The last wild rumor we reported on talked of a multi-carrier launch, also on Google Play, with unlockable bootloaders and a price that you won’t be able to pass on. I think it’s safe to say that the phone is real, we just don’t know if any of the other parts of the story are.

Update: Motorola has pulled the X-Phone job listing from LinkedIN. It’s still available in the jobs section of the Moto careers site (here), though. Not sure what to think. Were they trolling us? Did someone screw up?

Brace yourself, the hypebeasting is about to commence. A bit of info was handed to us a by a long time reader and we’re not really sure what to make of it. What we do know, is that one of [redacted] forum members who has long been a source of Motorola information, posted up the details about the “X” phone that is said to be Moto’s next big release. We thought we’d share, even if it does sound way too good to be true. Feel free to attack it, poke holes in it, drool over it, or daydream about a life with this phone in this sort of scenario. Again, it’s been flagged as a “wild rumor” on purpose.

Here is the word on the streets:

Motorola X Phone will be announced at Google I/O in May.

Current target for release is July 8 (definitely subject to change).

All carriers will sell the X Phone.

Verizon will sell it for $299 on contract.

All versions will also be sold through the Google Play store at similar off-contract price to Nexus line.

If you want to unlock the bootloader through Verizon, they will charge a $15/month fee.

If you buy it through Google Play, it comes unlocked with no fee.

Not a “Nexus” but will come running stock Android and with some bloatware.

Bloatware can apparently be removed once unlocked.

I don’t even know where to begin with this. An X Phone on all carriers, running stock, that will be sold directly through Google Play at an insanely low price, and with an unlockable bootloader? Doesn’t it sound way too good? That’s a dream scenario right there, but then again, with the new Google leadership, maybe Motorola is going big. They certainly have a lot of ground to make up on the rest of the Android players.

So what do you think? Sound crazy?

Feel free to hit up the [redacted] thread as well, since it’s 600+ pages of all sorts of info.

Via: [Redacted]

*Forum thread with source info was closed. Forum also asked to no longer be credited.

Cheers S!
