Remember the Wikipad? Back in October, this gaming tablet hybrid device was delayed by its makers, stating that there was still a few enhancements they needed to complete on the device before launch. Well, it’s February now and we are finally hearing the first news about a second attempt at launch. Although, this Wikipad has changed quite a bit. 

Previously, the Wikipad had a 10″ tablet as its main focus, but after some research, the company found that a 7″ tablet was easier to handle and operate. Not only is it more compact, but by using a 7″ slate, the Wikipad can meet a new low price of just $250. Much more reasonable and accessible to the youth than the previous $500.

Essentially, think of this new tablet inside the controller shell as a Nexus 7 in terms of specs. It has a Tegra 3, 7″ 1280 x 800 display, runs Android 4.1, 1GB of DDR3 RAM, 16GB of storage (upgradeable to 32GB), and has a 4,100mAh battery.

For those waiting to get their hands on the gaming tablet known as the Wikipad, you’re going to be waiting a bit longer according to a press release from their development team. Launch was scheduled for today, but Wikipad has contacted their retail partners and have said that due to enhancements that should be made before release, they will continue work and delay it until when they feel it is ready.

The Wikipad team has been relentlessly working with our manufacturers and partners to perfect the Wikipad bundle to ensure our first product is the best tablet and entertainment experience at launch.  There is a last minute opportunity to enhance the Wikipad bundle as well as a minor refinement needed to ensure our first customers are completely satisfied with the Wikipad.

We have informed our retail partners about this delay.  For those who pre-ordered the Wikipad at GameStop through today October 31st, we will deliver the refined and upgraded bundles as well as a special bonus gift with the pre-order.

Attention mobile gamers, does this thing look awesome? Well, it should! It’s called the Wikipad and it’s set to launch at GameStop on October 31 for $500. But don’t let that price tag scare you away, this thing was built with mobile gaming in mind. As you can see, the tablet itself comes with a dock (lack of better word) with built in buttons and thumbsticks. Along the bottom we have some monster speakers for cranking out all the sound fx you could hope for, but that’s just the beginning. 

The tablet comes with some fantastic hardware specs as well. The display is a 10.1″ LCD (1280×800) protected with Gorilla Glass, powered by a Tegra 3 quad-core processor running at 1.4GHz, running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Along the backside of the device, you’ll find an 8MP camera as well as a 2MP shooter on the front. Basically, it’s a souped up tablet for the more game-focused consumer.

What do you think? Awesome? Not so much? For $500, we’ll see how fast/slow they fly off the shelves.
