Report: Google+ to be Dialed Back, Fate Unknown, Hangouts Team Moving to Android

The minute Vic Gundotra informed the world that he was leaving Google after eight years, the first thing most of us asked was, “What does this mean for his baby, Google+?” That question remains unanswered at this point, but a report out of TechCrunch gives off the impression that Google is viewing Google+ quite differently today than it did only a few months ago. Vic Gundotra Leaves Google

Vic Gundotra, VP at Google and master of all things Google+, announced today that he is leaving the company after 8 years. Gundotra announced the move himself in a post on Google+, stating that it is “time for a new journey,” although, he also mentioned that now isn’t the “day to talk about” specifics of that. Instead, Gundotra wants to celebrate his past 8 years with the people he worked with at Google.  (more…)

Google+ Update Rolling Out, Brings Shake-for-Snow Auto Awesome and Simplified Search Feature

Google’s Vic Gundotra, announced this morning that a new version of Google+ is soon to hit Android devices, version 4.2.4. In the update are several additions, such as a feature that allows you to simply shake your device while viewing a picture to have snow flakes gracefully fall from the sky. Previously, this feature was an Auto Awesome enhancement, but now you can throw it onto any picture of your choosing. In addition, searching across various posts, people, photos, and communities is a whole lot easier, as users can now make a comprehensive search across the entire platform via a single search box. New Android Camera API in the Works, Supports Camera RAW

For longer than we care to admit to the outside world, the camera experience on Google’s Nexus devices has been lackluster. That’s actually a nice way to put a completely inconsistent experience that we suffer through each day with the Nexus 5 and Nexus 4 smartphones. Regardless, it appears as if those days could almost be behind us. Recently discovered in a commit through the public Android source code, Google is working on a new camera API for the OS.  (more…)

Why Couldn’t Vic Gundotra and Sundar Pichai Sleep Last Night?

It’s October 28, one of the oft-rumored potential announcement dates for the new Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 “Kit Kat.” While we still have nothing official to share with you from Google, we are a bit curious as to why Vic Gundotra, Google’s senior VP of social, was so excited last night for Monday to arrive that he couldn’t sleep and needed to ask Android boss Sundar Pichai if he was having troubles as well. The timing of his posts to Google+ on the eve of the week that we had been expecting new Nexus products to arrive has at least caught our attention.   (more…)

Can you imagine a time where the camera in your smartphone is good enough that you wouldn’t need a DSLR or point-and-shoot to take great pictures? It’s an interesting idea, and one that most of us have more than likely entertained a time or two over the last few years as smartphones have become increasingly important in our lives. It’s also obvious that smartphone manufacturers care, as each year, we see new camera tech and exciting new software features that are focused on snapping better images in low light and while on the go.
