We as consumers are still awaiting details on which upcoming devices will be running NVIDIA’s Tegra 4 processor this year. News out of Greece today shows that a tablet made by Toshiba could be one of the first, as it has popped up on the web sporting a few notable features.

It looks to be a 10″ device, running somewhat stock Android 4.2.1. The next thing to take note of is that it appears to have a specially designed dock that it can be mounted in, which makes it good for people that like the notebook functionality that some tablets offer. Lastly, the Tegra 4 chip, according to TechBlog, is clocked at 1.8GHz when tested using benchmark applications.

No matter what device comes first running the new chip, the sooner the better in my book.

According to recent reports, Toshiba is working on a camera for smartphones and tablets that will allow users to focus on certain points in images well after the photo has been taken. If this sounds familiar, it’s because Lytro, a device that Kellex was fascinated with for about 48 hours, does this same effect. Once a picture is taken, you can then go back and re-focus on any point in said image. It’s neat, but when can we expect to see it in our phones?

Well, if the reports are right, then we are looking at sometime before the end of 2013. Our issue is that since this is Toshiba, we’ll have to hope they make a smartphone with this sensor in place that makes its way to the U.S. that we will actually want to purchase. Fingers crossed.

Show of hands who would buy a phone or tablet just for an amazing camera?

Can you believe it? It’s day 5 of Reader Appreciation Week, meaning this is the last of the mega-giveaways. How quickly did that go? We already gave away a Nexus 7, Toshiba Excite 10, HTC One X, and a Transformer Pad with matching keyboard dock. To put it loosely, this has been one heck of a week.

To finish it out, we have a Toshiba Excite 7.7 up for grabs thanks to our friends at NVIDIA. This is a tablet that most overlooked because of its steep price tag. If you take a look at reviews around the web though, you’ll quickly realize that this is quite the little package. It sports a 7.7″ AMOLED display, Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, microSD slot for expandable storage, and dual cameras.

Who wants it?

Day 3 of Reader Appreciation Week is here! On day 1, we gave away a Nexus 7. Yesterday, we gave away an HTC One X. Today, well, let’s go big (as in screen size) and hook someone up with a Toshiba Excite 10. While we may not have given the Excite 10 a ton of love as it arrived during a time when 10″ tablets were flooding the market and rarely stood out from one another, it’s safe to say that this device is no slouch. Thanks to its Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, 10.1″ Autobrite Gorilla Glass display, dual cameras, and variety of ports (including a full sized SD card slot), it matches up nicely to most tablets in the industry on paper.

Toshiba’s next entry into the Android tablet world is here with the Excite 10 launching today. The 10.1″ tablet comes in three different storage sizes; 16, 32 and 64GB. Currently the 64GB can only be pre-ordered but the other two sizes are up for grabs if you’re looking to order them from Amazon or Toshiba directly. While this may not be the 13″ monster we are waiting for, it is no slouch itself.

The Excite is not lacking in the specs department either. At it’s core a Tegra 3 quad-core chipset that has been shown to tear through anything you can throw at it. The display is 1280×800 display and covered with protective Gorilla Glass, it has 1GB of RAM and full microSD slot alongside miniUSB and microHDMI ports. All of those ports make it one of the most versatile tablets out there now. Oh, and it’s even running Ice Cream Sandwich, which sweetens the deal all the more.

Back in January at CES, we rolled by the Toshiba booth and caught a glimpse at their upcoming super portable 13″ television. The folks working the booth informed us that it was actually a tablet and not a TV and would in fact, be making its debut this year. We were shocked, confused, a little worried, and then proceeded to snap pictures and find out more info on it.

Today, Toshiba has officially announced the Excite line of slates and have also given their exact release dates for the US. On May 6, the 10″ variant will be available starting at $450, followed by the 7.7″ (32GB model for $500) and 13″ ($650 for 32GB model) tablets on June 10.

All three versions of the tablet will sport NVIDIA’s quad-core Tegra 3 chipset, so for those of you into mobile gaming, these should be right up your alley. The original Toshiba Thrive harnessed the functionality of having a built in USB port and HDMI out, but those have been scrapped to help keep their bodies super thin. They are powerful tablets, but at those prices, it’s hard to get too excited.

It may be hard to believe, but there are devices still out there that have not received the update to Ice Cream Sandwich yet. I know, it’s unbelievable. The Toshiba Thrive and the Acer Iconia tablets are just two of the devices on that list. Well, you can now mark off the Iconia tablet, as Acer has begun to push out ICS to the A200 tablet starting last Friday. Congrats, Iconia owners.

As for the Thrive, owners have until the end of Spring to receive it on their devices, so the wait could be a couple more months. Word from Toshiba’s PR Manager is that both the 10.1″ and 7″ variations of the device will receive the Ice Cream love around that time frame. Could be worse – you could own a Thunderbolt.

In our last booth tour of the week, we hung out with the folks from Toshiba to see what they have in store for 2012. There were 4 tablets on display, some that will come to the U.S., others that will stay over in Japan. The most eye-popping was clearly the 13.3″ behemoth that you are seeing above. It current remains nameless and has a mystery list of specs, but our mind is already running through ways to put such a massive portable tablet in action. Assuming of course that it is portable at that size. It had all of the standard ports such as micro-HDMI and USB. There were dual cameras and a similar back material to what you will find on the Excite X10.

To see more of the beast, along with the rest of their 2012 works, jump past the break.

Excite X10

The Excite X10 will most definitely be in stores during the first half of this year. Of all the tablets on display in the Toshiba booth, this is the most ready and was actually available to be held. If you follow us on Google+ then you probably saw this device already. It boasts a 1.2GHz OMAP4430 dual-core processor, 10.1″ Gorilla Glass display and just so happens to be the world’s thinnest tablet (for now). The build quality of the device feels top notch, is ultra light, and bears no resemblance to their two Thrive models. It currently runs Honeycomb, but depending on launch, it may see Ice Cream Sandwich.

The last two tablets we saw were on the smaller side. One was a 7.7″ OLED tablet made specifically for the media hog. The screen being OLED is much more vibrant for watching movies or viewing photos, but it’s also ultra portable at that size for the traveler who needs entertainment. The second was a 5.1″ tablet (not a phone) that will likely stay in Japan and not come to the States. It rocked a 21:9 ratio to give you an almost edge-less viewing experience.

Overall we liked what we saw from Toshiba. As with all tablets we seem to see these days, their success depends almost solely on price. Let’s hope they come in with something ultra-competitive.

Two weeks from today, many of you will flock to electronics and big box stores to snatch up the amazing deals that they have advertised for Black Friday. One of your stops should probably include Best Buy if tablets were one of your holiday shopping options. In their Black Friday ad that was released to just about every BF site on the planet today, it’s pretty clear that they want to move some tablet inventory.

How does an Asus Transformer for just $249 sound? The Toshiba Thrive at $279? Maybe the Acer Iconia 7 for just $189? By the end of November 25, you might have a family full of Android tablets.

More tablets:

The Toshiba Thrive is one of the new Tegra 2 Honeycomb Android tablets that we really haven’t talked much about, but wanted to at least point out the fact that you have a chance to win 1 right now.

Through Toshiba’s site, they are offering up 10 Thrive tablets to people who simply find a secret code somewhere in the video that we’ve embedded below. It’s pretty simple, but it does sound like you need to let your friends know to watch the video over and over again, because as we understand it, the secret code won’t appear until the video has been seen 10,000 times.

Once it appears though, you’ll want to head over to this landing page and enter it in.

So what is the Toshiba Thrive? Let’s just say that it should be considered one of the most decked out tablets we’ve ever seen with full USB, SD card slot and HDMI port, but it’s heft (1.6lbs is the same weight as the XOOM), size and thickness (thicker than the XOOM) could make it painful to use for a long period of time.

Specs:

Android 3.1

1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor+

1GB DDR2 RAM

10.1″ (1280×800) display

Up to 32GB on-board storage

Full SD card slot

5MP rear camera (720p capture and playback)

2MP front camera

Full size USB 2.0

Mini USB

Full size HDMI port

6 different colored back plates

See, it’s another Tegra 2 beast, but that thickness and weight scares me.
