It looks like the cancellation of the original DROID Bionic isn’t only going to annoy techies who have been waiting for the first ever 4G LTE dual-core phone to arrive, but accessory companies as well.  As you can see in the shot above, cases have already been made for that original Bionic design and are on sale in retail stores like Meijer for $29.99.  The problem here is that we are fully expecting the new Bionic to look much more like the DROIDX than anything, so all of these cases aren’t going to fit especially since the camera and speaker have both been adjusted. Now, the render of the “Targa” below is exactly that, a render, but from what we’ve been told, the final design will look closer to that than anything we saw back at CES. Poor accessory companies.

Old DROID Bionic Cases Show Up at Retailer, Something Tells Me They Won’t be Selling Any is a post from: Droid Life

An apparent OEM parts re-seller has posted up what appear to be DROID3 screen and top half kits, which we’ve taken and compared to the few D3 pics that are in the wild.  Yep, I’d say these are definitely the same thing, now we’re just wondering why this site is already selling them?  We weren’t expecting to see this device until late summer, but if you and I can already go out and buy pieces for one, I’d say that Motorola might be closer to having this ready than anyone thought.

The odd thing, is that they mentioned the name Targa alongside the DROID3, but we’re almost positive that is the codename for the new Bionic and that the D3′s is Solana…or should we flip flop those?  The Solana has been spotted with a model number of XT862 which would match up much more closely to the naming scheme for a keyboard-less phone like a DROIDX which the original pictures of the Targa resemble.  And as you may recall from the original DROID and 2 we saw model numbers of A855 and A955, so it would be odd for Moto to switch up that series now, wouldn’t it?  

Update:  A reader (Cheers Ryan!) has pointed out that the same parts site is showing the original Bionic as having the model number XT865, which is the same number we saw back at CES and is definitely the old one.  Could be legit?

Update 2:  As more readers and our homes at Phandroid have pointed out, the site has gone through and done a full comparison for us of the original DROID, DROID2 and this new version.  4″ screen is definitely go:

And I didn’t think I needed to point this out, but yes, that is indeed a front-facing camera up there and not just another proximity sensor:

And of course, we can always fall back on the theory that this site is simply using the name “Targa” to better place itself in search engines and this is all just one ugly coincidence.

Things just got a lot more confusing.

Motorola DROID 3 Parts Show Up at Supplier, Targa Name Listed? (Updated) is a post from: Droid Life

First of all, we want to make sure you are all clear that this is just one giant rumor at this point, but that we’ve heard enough behind the scenes to at least raise the question.  We have always tried to keep you guys in the loop when we start hearing murmurs of things, and this is no different.  Here we go…

While I can’t go into a lot of details on what I’ve been told, just know that word on the street suggests that the DROID BIONIC has possibly been scrapped completely or severely delayed for the Targa.  This is a subject that has been tossed around with our sources for a couple of weeks now, but things have really come forward in the last couple of days.

Update:  Looks like Howard Forums members are hearing similar things.

Update 2:  Mr. Panda weighed in the other day at AC forums… (Cheers Paul!)

The Bionic will not be cancelled and is well on track for the expected release date. The issues that alot of people are claiming are due to release to larger testing group. Does the device have issues?? YES.. will be kill a release? NO chance in hell.. Its a 4.3 inch display dual core proc device running LTE, so battery and performance tweaks are ongoing with Motorola on a almost daily basis.

Update 3:  Our Panda friend is now hearing that changes are in order…

A recent story came out about the much anticipated Droid Bionic from Motorola being scrapped.   I checked into it and yes there are legs to it, but the final nail in the “bionic” has not been hammered as of yet.

Take it all for what it’s worth, but also know that we have reached out to Motorola for comment.

And to counteract this rumor, let me just say that the device not ever seeing a store shelf would surprise the heck out of me.  Other than the Atrix, this was THE device to see at CES this year and has been the #1 requested phone on this site since January.  Many of you are waiting to upgrade because you want this phone and no other and I don’t blame you.  Let’s just hope we have more details soon, but a delay sounds more likely to me than anything.

Rumor: Has the DROID BIONIC Been Cancelled? (Updated) is a post from: Droid Life

Now that we’re done hypebeastin‘ the HTC Thunderbolt, it’s time to get back to the family of phones that truly drives us to do what we do everyday.  Some photos of the new DROIDs made the rounds last night and included a new player which has been codenamed Targa.

The Targa picture above appears to just be a mockup, but mockups are usually pretty good indicators of what the final phone will look like.  And this is one of those that we’re hoping is spot on because this phone is hot.  You can see that the plan is for it to be a 4G LTE device on Verizon, has at least a 4″ screen which we’ll assume is qHD, front and back cameras, and a super sleek body that emulates the DX, but a heck of a lot smoother.  No word on official specs or release date, but we’re not buying into the current rumor of it coming out by X-mas.  We’re thinking we could see it way before then.  

First look at the DROID3:

Ahhh the 3rd version of the original that started it all.  I’m liking this new thinner top for a slideout.  The D2 was incredibly heavy, so we’re hoping this new version will come in at a much lighter weight while also sporting a 4″ qHD screen.  It appears to have a front-facing camera, but that could also just be sensor.  And what about that new slanted lip?  This is definitely an upgrade over the D2′s look.

And the DROIDX2 again:

Well, we’ve seen pictures of the DROIDX2 already, but now we know for sure that Daytona is indeed the codename for it and the model number is MB870.  It’s also running 2.2.1 with the new Blur at this point, so hopefully that changes to Gingerbread come launch.

Thoughts?  This is a lot to take in on a Tuesday morning.
