The SHIELD (review here) is finally available, with users already receiving helpful updates from NVIDIA. The newest update weighs in at around 400MB, which brings a reduction in audio latency while streaming from your GeForce-powered PC. The changelog shows nothing else, so go grab it if you haven’t already.

We just got done posting our complete NVIDIA SHIELD review, and like clockwork, iFixIt has posted their form of a review – a complete device teardown! The teardown is a great way of seeing exactly what is inside the SHIELD, making it such a powerful gaming machine. Besides NVIDIA’s Tegra 4 processor, we get eyes on with some Samsung memory chips, SK Hynix RAM, the SHIELD’s interesting battery configuration and the springs that control the triggers. Unveiled at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, NVIDIA’s SHIELD portable gaming console has changed quite a bit from when it was first shown off. We were one of very few sites that were able to get an early hands-on experience with the device, falling head-over-heels for the “Project SHIELD” almost immediately after playing with it. Now in late July (thanks to a delay or two), the device is ready for the general public, undergoing a few cosmetic changes and other enhancements to make it into what NVIDIA hopes is a superb Android-powered gaming device.
SHIELD is capable of performing an extremely long list of tasks – some jaw-droppingly awesome, some just plain awesome, but with a price tag of $299, is SHIELD worth the investment to everyday buyers or best suited for only the hardcore gaming elite? Let’s take a look. (more…)
Yesterday afternoon, NVIDIA reached out to folks that pre-ordered SHIELD, explaining that they have a brand new launch date for the Tegra 4-powered device. Due to a hardware-related issue discovered in the last stage of the company’s quality assurance tests, the SHIELD launch was pushed back from its original launch date of June 27 and is now scheduled for July 31. With launch pushed back, there are people out there that pre-ordered NVIDIA’s SHIELD gaming console, but were met with sad emails last week. If you just can’t wait to get your hands on a SHIELD unit and want to see what all of the fuss is about, NVIDIA has partnered with GameStop and Micro Center to set up some unique SHIELD Experience Centers throughout the country. NVIDIA is working extremely hard to create a product that people want, bringing Android to its highest potential in the realm of mobile gaming. One of the features that SHIELD offers that I can’t get enough of, is the feeling of an actual controller in my hand while playing my favorite games. So, what happens when you pair said controller, complete with joysticks and triggers, with a new Parrot AR Drone 2.0? Pure nerd magic. (more…)
