After NVIDIA announced the SHIELD set-top box / game console this week, I saw a random Internet commenter state that it was nothing more than “OUYA 2.0.” While the thought is mildly humorous, SHIELD is much more than what OUYA ever was, hoped to be, and ever will be.
With the birth of Android TV last year, NVIDIA is placing a bet on the living room, and if the upward tick in smart TV purchases is any preliminary indicator, the company could have a very successful product on their hands. (more…)
At tonight’s “Made to Game” event in San Francisco, NVIDIA unveiled its newest product, a set-top box for the living room called the NVIDIA SHIELD.
The box features a high-performance WiFi system, USB connectors, gigabit ethernet port, and more. The NVIDIA SHIELD runs Android TV, and in fact, is the world’s first 4K Android TV box. The box comes with a remote, which doubles as the mic you use to control Android TV. (more…)
The future of gaming will arrive at a March 3 event, courtesy of NVIDIA. At least that’s what a press invite they sent to us is claiming.
It’s anyone’s guess as to what they will show, but they did note in the invite that this product has been “more than 5 years in the making.” Are we talking a new mobile processor like the Tegra X1 that was demoed during their CES event? Could this be a new SHIELD product? Maybe something related to GRID, their cloud gaming service? Maybe something far outside of those three areas? You tell us.

It appears a bug was causing battery drain while the lid was closed, and another bug was preventing videos from playing inside of Facebook, Chrome, and YouTube. Thanks to this update, all of these annoyances should be solved.

NVIDIA is pushing a new update to their ultimate gaming slate, the SHIELD Tablet, as version 1.2.1. The update is pretty minor, according to the changelog, but does improve WiFi performance on the 5GHz band, fixes a charging issue, and adds some optimizations for encrypted devices.
