This morning, Seesmic announced that it had been acquired by fellow Twitter client, Hootsuite. Seesmic has always been a pioneer in the Android Twitter game. At one time, they were the go-to client. To see them join forces with Hootsuite, my favorite Twitter client of the last 4 or 5 years, this should only mean that amazing updates and features will be on the way. Hootsuite has mentioned that they have experienced recent “hyper-growth,” which apparently means that others are seeing the light.

Here is the statement from Seesmic:

We are thrilled to announce today that Seesmic has been acquired by HootSuite. Seesmic and HootSuite have long shared a vision for the future of social media management and after years of friendly competition, have developed a mutual respect for one another. We care deeply about you, our users, and believe that this is the best possible outcome in what has been an exciting run together.

We would like to thank everyone involved with Seesmic since its launch, it has been an incredible ride and we are very thankful for all the support and passion you shared with us.

Like Seesmic, Hootsuite offers a suite of social media management tools, with even more options for small business and enterprise customers. Initially, support for both products will continue, however we will soon be bringing everyone into one great platform. We’re working on ways to make the transition as smooth as possible so keep an eye out for updates.

And a brief statement from Hootsuite CEO Ryan Holmes:

“I have always had a lot of respect for Seesmic’s CEO, Loïc Le Meur and the role Seesmic has played in advancing social business. We are thrilled to welcome Seesmic’s users into the HootSuite family.”

For those new to Hootsuite, think of it as the ultimate power Twitter tool. It was column-based long before all of these new Holo themed Twitter clients that continue to pop up on a weekly basis, yet seem to be missing every useful feature on Earth. You can use it in browser on a PC, but then carry over your work to an Android device without missing a beat. It allows for multiple users in an organization (basically a team setting), can give you analytics, and lets you manage multiple Twitter profiles. I’m telling you, it’s awesome.

Current Seesmic users will continue to have access to the app for now, but eventually, you will either have to merge in with Hootsuite or find another Twitter client.

Seesmic, now there is a name we haven’t heard much about in a while. As one of the top Twitter apps back in the early days of Android, this was a must-have for most users. But then the official Twitter app was released along with a dozen other feature-rich options and Seesmic soon disappeared from most of our radars. Today though, a substantial update is available including the option to upgrade to a “Pro” version that hides ads. They also tossed in thumbnail image viewing from Twitter and Instagram, gave you the ability to upload images directly to Twitter, and through the Pro version, added multi-account viewing.

In order to utilize Pro features, you will have to install the free version followed by the Pro version, since it is really just an unlock key.

Full changelog:

Updates to this version include the following added features:

Viewing from Instagram and Twitter within your timeline

Ability to upload images directly to Twitter

Removed support for Chatter

Implemented ad-support

Various bugs fixes and minor improvements

Seesmic update! That was a bad joke meaning “big” update…anyways.

One of the more popular Twitter clients on Android received a major update today that includes full Facebook support, updated widgets and Twitlonger integration. In Facebook, you can now add multiple accounts, view updates, comment, like, post to your accounts and to the pages you are admin of. With Twitlonger, you can cruise past the 140 character limit, but also set Seesmic to automatically use the lengthening service. And last but not least, widgets are now available for all of the supported services including Facebook, Twitter, Chatter and Google Buzz.

This will be quick as we put out a video review of Seesmic some time ago, but wanted to point out the new widget which came along with today’s update. It’s simple, but gets the job done.

Oh and they’ve also added native retweeting and geotagging. Nice work team.

If it weren’t for my unofficial marriage to Hootsuite, I may give this one another shot. OK, that’s a lie, I use both apps.

there was really just one thing holding seesmic back from becoming the best twitter application available for android (in our opinion). and guess what? they’ve fixed that issue along with many others in this latest update.

the “one thing” we are talking about is the addition of multiple accounts…

Multi Accounts
The necessity to add multiple accounts to mobile devices has become one of the most significant elements of Seesmic Android. You can now add multiple Twitter accounts in the application, and cross-post messages at the same time. This means that you can easily navigate through multiple Twitter communication channels and stay in touch with all your followers simultaneously. Moreover, the notifications you will be receiving will announce you of the online activity of your default Twitter user.

here are the other updates/fixes…

Adding an Extra Large text size option

Your profile information (avatar, number of following and followers,…) will now be updated automatically

Changing your Twitter account password will now be handled by the application

Composer now auto-corrects and auto-capitalize your words and sentences

Notifications are now cleared when the application is accessed from Launcher

Easily changing default account from the application’s Settings

Can remove a Twitter account simply by pressing on it

download…

(via seesmic blog)
