With fastboot files, you are able to relieve your Motorola phone from a variety of sticky situations. Using a program called RSDLite, you can flash these and recover your phone should you soft brick it or find yourself in some sort of a bootloop after tinkering too much. Basically, what I’m saying is that if you own a DROID RAZR or RAZR MAXX, you need to download the new files that were released last night that can get you to stock 4.0.4, which is the OTA update you all received last month. It’s also a decent way to start fresh on a clean 4.0.4 if you have been running leaks or other ROMs.

Hit up the links below to download. You want the 6.7.2-180 build file.

SBF files have saved more than a few people’s phones if flashing ROMs gets a little out of hand. It allows you to flash a stock image of the phone in a last case scenario and is always good to have around just in case. The DROID 3 is seeing some love with a new SBF file released, of the .906 firmware build, for download today, and you even get to choose which method you like.

For those who like the safety of a one-click method, you can download the file and let the program do it’s thing while you relax. If RSDLite is more your cup of tea, XDA developer ovelayer has that file for you as well. Either way you use, the SBF will revert your phone back to .890 if you would ever need it. Generally these are good to have around if you are a prolific ROM flasher, so head over to XDA and get the download now.

The first fastboot file for the DROID 4 is now available for those of you that want to have a security blanket of sorts should you run into any software issues with your phone.
DROID 2 Global owners, download this SBF file and stash the file somewhere safe. If you are the type to try and flash ROM’s and gain root, then you may have heard that after the newest .629 firmware update, any attempt at SBF’ing to an earlier build would have resulted in some very unpleasant outcomes such as bricked and dead phones. Thankfully, developers now have their hands on the official SBF and have tweaked it so that you can unbrick your devices and even root the phone through a pretty simple set of instructions.

If you are a DROID X owner and enjoy rooting and flashing ROMs, then you should be immediately made aware of this new development by Motorola. If you have updated to the newest .621 firmware, flashing older versions of firmware via SBF could result in a perma-bricked device. Many folks who have tried the process since the update have been reporting on multiple forums and online sites that after flashing an SBF, the phone becomes a paperweight.

Until we learn more about what is going on, we recommend not trying to SBF your DROID X if it is on firmware version .621. Has anyone here ran into that problem or have you been able to successfully SBF after taking the update? Let us know down below.

This week we found out that a “soak test” has been scheduled for owners of the DROIDX2. Details of what were to be included had yet to materialize, but this latest leaked SBF file (from the2dcour) for the device may give us a pretty good hint. The full SBF below will bring your device up to Android 2.3.4, is still locked, and does not appear to be the 3D Blur that we have seen on the DROID3 and Bionic.

Good news is that you can still root with Pete’s root tool.

Before we start on this, we’ll just remind you that this stuff is something that should not be taken lightly and we recommend that you do your best to fully understand every step of it before proceeding. This file should really only be used as a last resort if for some reason you think you have bricked your DROID Bionic. It flashes in a similar fashion using RSD Lite to what you may remember from all of those SBF files in our early OG and DROIDX days. It could be a life saver and it could also kill your phone.

Again, proceed with caution. I would definitely tuck these files away though if you plan on doing anything out of the ordinary with your new device.

We noticed that more than a few of you are having issues receiving the DROID2 Gingerbread update due to the fact that you are rooted, have removed bloatware, etc. and wanted to walk you through the flashing of an SBF file – basically the only way you can return to stock to get official 2.3.3. We should warn you though, that SBF files wipe your device clean and are also pretty dangerous. This is one of the few ways that you can actually brick a Motorola phone, so be careful.

Download: VRZ_A955_2.3.20.zip

Instructions:

*Make sure your battery is fully charged.

1. Download and install Motorola USB drivers that fit your Windows system. [Download]
2. Download and install RSD Lite 4.8. [Download]
3. Download the Droid2 SBF file from above to your PC.
4. Unzip that file to somewhere other than your desktop.
5. Open RSD Lite, tap the “…” button, find the 2.3.20 SBF file that you just unzipped and select it.
6. Plug your phone into your computer and turn it off.
7. Boot into bootloader by holding the Up Arrow and then holding Power until the screen flashes.

Should say “Battery OK – OK to Program – Transfer Mode: USB”

8. Click the start button and allow your phone to flash 2.2 (2.3.20 Blur).
9. When your phone gets to 100% and reboots, you are all done.
10. If your phone reboots and has a bunch of Force Closes, you need to factory reset.
11. Boot your phone into recovery using ADB and command “adb reboot recovery.”
12. Run a factory reset/wipe data. Reboot your phone and accept the update.

Hope that helps those of you that are stuck. It has been a while since we did an SBF flashing walk-through. For additional help, feel free to check out this similar post for the DROIDX that was done almost a year ago. You will find a lot of helpful RSD Lite tips in case you do run into issues.

Today’s app of the day isn’t an app at all. It’s a program. Currently it’s for the DROIDX but has plans to be applied to all devices.

SBF. Did you just tremble a little? Feel a cold chill climb up your spine? How about the word brick? Well no more fetal positions for those of you that avoid SBF like the plague! A collaboration, spearheaded by WugFresh, between some big time Android players has spawned SBFportable. This is a stand alone and automated program for all Windows computers that takes the scary out of SBF.

For those new to the term SBF, here is a little background. Let’s say you jump into the rooting game and at some point find your device useless because a ROM flashing went wrong, you decide to go back to stock for an OTA update, or you are for some reason left without a working backup. Flashing an SBF file will solve all of your problems by returning your device to its stock state. After flashing an SBF file, you are left with a device whose software looks like it came straight out of a box.

What is SBFportable and how does it work?

…here is the first release of a fully automated standalone live SBF exe built with 1KDS’s latest iso (1KDStaz0.8.iso), MobaLiveCD.exe (standalone vm environment via QEMU), and some batch and VBScript I wrote to make it work. Just download it, and double click and it should do the rest; besides pressing 1 once its all loaded up. The file will silently extract its contents to a temporary directory on your local machine and then run…

WugFresh also points out a bunch of must-dos before using this program such as:

Making sure your phone is in bootloader mode.

Making sure your phone is fully charged.

Making sure your computer is fully charged

Understanding that SBF-ing wipes your entire phone clean.

Making sure your phone is actually plugged into your computer.

So there ya go. I have used it on my DROIDX to test it (although I’m a Linux flashing addict) and can tell you it is almost too easy. No excuses anymore guys. Get a ROM. Get Gingerbread. Get this file and never look back!

Download: SBFportable_v0.6.exe

Full support can be found here.

*And the AAS app today is The Impossible Game.
