The LG Revolution, one of the first 4G LTE on the planet, is set to receive a new update as build number VS910ZVB. The update itself is nothing to write home about, as it only contains security patches plus the removal of a handful of bloatware apps like Rockband, Bitbop, Verizon Apps, Blockbuster, etc. The list is actually longer than that if you can believe it, so if anything, your device will have freed up space on its internal storage.

So, enjoy the update.

The update is 46.8MB in size.

The LG Revolution on Verizon has an update on the way as build VZ910ZV9. Through the update, LG has patched a security hole, improved the phone application, and fixed some text message issues. More importantly though, Verizon mentioned their new “Remote Diagnostics” customer service tool again that has raised a few eyebrows in its short life. It first debuted on the Revolution back in March, so it is sort of odd to see them bring it up again here. We aren’t sure if they are improving it or making it as public as possible as to not freak out Revolution owners. Probably the latter.

For those not familiar, this new Remote Diagnostics tool allows customer service agents to remotely access your phone when you call into them looking for help. They can’t do it unless you give them approval, but in a time where privacy is brought up on the daily, you can imagine how most of us feel about this tool being installed on our phones without our consent. Until we see an opt-in to even have it installed, we aren’t going to be friends.

The update is 20.9MB in size. More info.

Over the weekend, Verizon pushed a support document to their LG Revolution site indicating that an update was imminent. That update looked normal for the most part and included bug fixes, Verizon Video, and more. What wasn’t normal though, was the section under “New Features” that read “Enhanced customer support with Verizon Remote Diagnostics.” What on Earth could that be?

From the document we have the following:

New customer care solution to improve device issue diagnosis during customer support calls. When a customer calls into Verizon Wireless Customer Care, this solution, with the customer’s permission, allows support personnel to remotely view the user’s device for troubleshooting and application demonstrations.

The key point to that paragraph is “with the customer’s permission.” It’s essentially a remote login type of service for VZW service reps to use during support calls to better assist you. We have to assume that it’s a piece of software that will sit in the background of your phone that can be activated once you give them the thumbs up. That scare anyone a bit?

In a day when you can’t visit a tech site without seeing something to do with privacy, all we can do is try to take Verizon’s word for it on this one. If it indeed turns out to be some sort of tracking tool that is engaged without customer consent, you can imagine the lawsuit.

Now the big question is, which phones will see it next? And if they do, can we opt out of having it on our phone? As someone that handles their phone without ever having to call customer service, this is something I do not want on any of my phones.

According to sources over at The Verge, the DROID 3 and LG Revolution have reached the end of the road. Come January, both will hit “End of Life” status and will not see their stock replenished going forward in stores. This comes as a slight shock seeing as the D3 was released only 6 months ago, but then again, we all know that the DROID 4 could be here any day. As far as the Revolution goes, it’s in the same boat as the D3, meaning it has a successor already in the works, known as the LG Spectrum.

Both were solid devices, but with one not having LTE and the other running 2010-esque specs, neither really stood a chance long term. They will be upstaged by complete devices that have LTE and dual-core processors – “end of life” only seems appropriate.

Now, the real story here is whether or not Verizon will unveil both the DROID 4 and Spectrum at CES. If I were a betting man, I’d consider dropping a couple of bucks on that line.

Hello official renders of the LG Spectrum, the latest 4G LTE behemoth to make its way to Verizon. Well, it’s not there yet, but we most certainly know that it will be here before too long. We first reported it as having ditched the “Revolution 2″ nickname back at the beginning of November, but the folks over at PocketNow have discovered some press shots of it with “Spectrum” attached to help confirm that.

Specs are obviously unconfirmed, but we were told long ago that it would sport a 4.5″ HD display, dual-core processor, and be extremely thin. LG has already released an HD phone on AT&T as the Nitro HD – this looks to be a similar phone.

Willing to give LG another shot?

It has been a while since we last heard anything about the LG Revolution 2. Once rumored to be in the works as a 4.5″ HD screen toting, 4G LTE blazing, unbelievably thin-bodied beast, this phone sounded like the first major player from LG in years. We saw it potentially cruise through the FCC followed by a bunch of overseas picture leaks, but there was no U.S. mention to be found. And then all went silent. Until today that is.

A new device by the name LG Spectrum has appeared in Verizon system and we found ourselves wondering if this just might end up as the follow-up device to the Revolution. No way to really tell for sure with the little information given in these pictures, but the device is most definitely global, 4G and made by LG. Now, we have seen Big Red release a few lower-end 4G devices over the last couple of months, so with the Galaxy Nexus, RAZR and Rezound on the way, this could very well be something mid-range.

The LG forum let it slip last night that the Gingerbread (Android 2.3) update for the Revolution could start today. Without a change log though, we were a little hesitant to jump on board with that. Well, good news this morning, as the list of changes has been uploaded and published by Verizon. It’s 87.8MB in size and should be on everyone’s phones by 11/2.

Be sure to let us know if you receive it! And I guess that leaves the Charge on Froyo? You go Samsung!

In August, there was a lot of talk about a follow-up device to the LG Revolution after we first reported that one had landed on a Verizon MAP list as LG-VS920, prompting us to quickly dub it the Revolution 2. Our sources have actually played with the device in its early stages, claiming that it has a 4.5″ HD screen, LTE and is incredibly thin. After seeing it pass through the FCC though, we started to wonder if the device was closer to a launch than we had all imagined.

Well, after you take a look at the device pictured above and listen to the specs, you might also think that we are really close. The LG LU6200 has made a couple of appearances over the last few days sporting that same 4.5″ IPS LCD HD screen, LTE, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, dual-cameras, and 1GB of RAM. It’s said to be available in Korea some time in October, but after seeing what we believe to be a similar device already hit up the FCC here in the states, I wouldn’t put it past LG or Big Red to pump this beast out by the holidays.

The device is also said to be running Android 2.3.5 out of the box with a guarantee that it will see Ice Cream Sandwich shortly after. While I have never been the biggest LG phone fan, I can even admit that this phone made my heart flutter slightly. 4.5″ IPS LCD? Hello beautiful.

We first saw a new LG Revolution-esque model pop up when we reported on a device by the model number LG-VS920 that had appeared in a MAP (minimum advertised price) listing back in early August. That device, we started assuming, was called the Revolution 2 as it appeared in a massive leaked roadmap for Verizon just a day or so later with a 10/20 release date attached to it.

Well, that same VS920 phone made its way through the FCC today sporting LTE radios and a similar build to the original Revo. You can see in the picture above that the camera has possibly been moved up the back of the device, but is still centered in the middle along with a housing for a flash.

A Thunderbolt (Vigor) and a Revolution (Revo2) revamping all within the same year? And you wonder why we kept hammering on these phones for having last year’s specs with this year’s buzz word (4G LTE).

Hard to believe, isn’t it? The HTC Thunderbolt, the device that was supposed to kick off the Skype with Video campaign back in March is just now receiving it almost a month and a half after it was released to the Android Market. The Skype team didn’t just stop there though and actually added 17 other top devices including the DROID Charge, LG Revolution and Samsung Galaxy S II to the supported list. It looks like they’ve adopted the same model as Netflix (slowly but surely), but we’ll admit that we are still happy that it’s making its way onto some of our favorite phones.

Oh, we should probably point out that if your phone is running 2.2, like the Thunderbolt and Charge, you won’t be able to use your front camera with it. Not sure what exactly Skype is thinking, but that’s what we have.

Here is the list of newly supported devices:

Acer A5
HTC Desire (2.2)
HTC Desire HD
HTC Evo 3D
HTC Evo 4G
HTC Flyer
HTC Incredible S
HTC Thunderbolt – Verizon (2.2) (US only)
LG Revolution – Verizon (2.2) (US only)
Samsung Galaxy S

With the support documents hitting VZW’s site, we can expect the update to start rolling out within the next week.

Either Verizon hasn’t sold many of these inductive (wireless) battery charging pads and covers or they are finally ready to force you into learning about this new technology. Through August’s “Accessory of the Month” deal, you can buy the wireless charging pad ($69.99) that they have on hand and receive the wireless battery cover for a select few devices for free – all normally priced from $29.99 – $39.99.

What is wireless charging? Well, if you have a pad and battery cover, you can easily charge your device without having to actually plug in your device. Sure, the charging pad will always have to be plugged into a wall, but I’ll even admit that it is pretty handy to come home and simply set my Thunderbolt down on my desk to get it to charge rather than fuss with a microUSB cable.

So if you have a DROID3, HTC Thunderbolt, LG Revolution, DROID Charge, or Incredible 2, you may want to look into the future of charging and grab one of these pads along with a matching inductive battery cover.

Buy.

If you were looking for a reason to buy the LG Revolution, then maybe this newly announced Netflix promo will help. Starting today and ending on August 28, Verizon and Netflix have partnered up to give each newly purchased Revolution a 3-month free subscription to their streaming service. Current Netflix customers are also eligible for this promo.

Beginning 7/22/2011 through 8/28/2011, customers who purchase the LG Revolution on a new two year contract will receive three free months of Netflix streaming service valued at $7.99/month.

Not a bad deal, but I’m still not sure this is enough to make me lock into a 2-year contract for this phone when we know that the DROID Bionic is seemingly 2 weeks away.

And we had to laugh at breakdown they provided of how many movies per month you can watch on their tiered data plans. We’re assuming that those numbers would mean how many movies you could watch if you didn’t use data on any other service like Gmail or internet. Damn tiers. Sort of sad that the day we get super fast internet with big screens and services that allow us to utilize them properly, is the same day that we get shot down into tiers so that we can no longer fully take advantage of them without breaking the bank.

Update: New commercial released just minutes ago for this promo:

Not. Surprised. By. This.

The LG Revolution wasn’t completely doomed from the beginning, but it sure as hell had a tough uphill climb out the gate. It was the 3rd of Verizon’s 4G LTE devices which just so happened to hit stores after two marketing monsters were launched: the HTC Thunderbolt and the DROID Charge. It was stuck with Bing…yeah. The specs surely aren’t mind-blowing (single-core), the screen is average, it’s custom UI is not good, and we have absolutely no idea if it will ever see Android 2.3 (just ask G2x owners how they feel about LG). And it also launched as the closest 4G device to the DROID Bionic which many, MANY, have been holding out for. Some times you need fillers – this was definitely a filler.
