Motorola has officially announced that the Jelly Bean update for the DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX is rolling out to devices in phases. With the soak test underway, along with manual downloads making the rounds, we weren’t really expecting this announcement to come for a few days, or at least until the test had completed. In fact, Verizon has yet to mention that the update is on the way nor have they provided support docs with details on it. But hey, Moto has decided that the time is right. It’s official.

Full changelog can be found here. If you are running the Jelly Bean build that accidentally pushed out on X-mas, you can update here. If you are running official Ice Cream Sandwich, you can update here.

If you are not a part of the soak test and do not feel like manually updating, we would guess that the update will arrive OTA within the next two weeks.

I’m really starting to like this “new” Motorola. First, they killed off almost all Moto bloatware in the new Jelly Bean (Android 4.1.2) update for the DROID RAZR and replaced most of it with stock Android apps. Second, they are making sure to take care of anyone who received the accidental X-mas Eve Jelly Bean update (98.72.8) on their RAZR or RAZR MAXX, by providing a 40MB file that jumps users up to the official 98.72.16. That’s right, no need to flash back to 4.0.4 or some older build.

Thanks to a tester of the software, we now have the file for flashing. For those of you wondering when you would be upgraded off of the older build of JB, that time is now.

Instructions:

*You have to be running the X-mas Jelly Bean build of 98.72.8 in order to use this file. If you are coming from 4.0.4, this will not work. This is only for those that were part of the accidental update group who need to get to the current build of Android 4.1.2.

*AGAIN, this update is for those running 98.72.8 only.

*You do not need to be rooted to do this. 100% stock is the game. In fact, you don’t even need a computer – download file to phone, move to SD card and follow instructions.

According to the flood of emails that have hit our inbox, the soak test of Jelly Bean (Android 4.1.2) for the original DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX has officially begun. We don’t exactly know when it’ll arrive for all users who are not a part of the Motorola Feedback Network, but assuming this test goes smoothly, it shouldn’t be long. And for your sake, I hope you aren’t waiting more than a week, as the update rids the device of almost all Moto-inspired bloatware, turning it into a device that even an Android elitist snob would be proud of. If this update isn’t a sign of the “new” Motorola, then I don’t know what is.

Below, you’ll find the full changelog for the update. The “enhancements” and “fixes” sections are filled with typical goodies and all, but the “changes” section is what should really get you going. Motorola has decided to remove the Social Location app, MotoActv, MotoPrint, Alarm and Timer (replaced by stock Google Clock), and Verizon Video on Demand. They also killed off the My Gallery and My Music apps in favor of the stock Android Gallery app and Google Music. MotoCast is no longer integrated into anything on the device, including the Files app. It’s now a stand alone app (it has been enhanced to be much more powerful). They also killed all of sorts of widgets that you likely weren’t using anyway, as they were tied to many of these now-deceased apps.

Outside of the debloating, they made Chrome the stock browser, brought in Google Now, enhanced Voice Search, improved the camera greatly (better panorama too), improved network connectivity, fixed contact sync, and sooooo much more.

The build number is 98.72.16.

This is quite the update. It may shock some of you to see so many major changes, but this is the direction Motorola wants to go. Less “Moto” branded software, more stock Android. We can’t argue against that.

Update: Here is the update file and instructions for those running the X-mas Jelly Bean build.

The original DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX are about to officially receive Jelly Bean. According to invites that are going out to members of the Motorola Feedback Network, testing for the update should start shortly.

The timing of this test fits right in line with Motorola’s Q1 schedule and is only two months after a Jelly Bean build was accidentally pushed to a number of handsets. We went hands-on with that update in case you were wondering what to expect.

Once the test starts, assuming everything goes well, the official push to all devices from Verizon and Moto shouldn’t be far out.

Hi,

Thanks for joining the Motorola Feedback Network. We are inviting owners of the Droid RAZR or Droid RAZR Maxx on Verizon to participate in an early preview of a new Jelly Bean software release, and provide feedback. If you are not currently using a Droid RAZR or Droid RAZR Maxx on Verizon, please excuse and ignore this email.

Click this link – https://www.surveymonkey.com/– to take the enrollment survey if you wish to take part. Note that you must be a member in good standing of the Motorola Owners’ Forums to be included. The registration window could close without notice so please respond as quickly as possible.

This is a confidential test under the terms of the Motorola Feedback Network. Do not post any details or information about this on any public sites.

Thanks — please understand that start times are always fluid. We ask for your patience if you register but don’t hear from us right away.

This morning or late last night, Motorola released a new version of their device software update timeline website. In the past, the page was nothing more than a giant table filled with devices and scheduled rollout times for updates, but this new version allows you to sort it by country, carrier and then device. Once a device has been selected, it will tell you the last update that was received or if there is a new one coming in the near future. You will also find a link to the support page for the device which tells you whether or not you are on the latest version of software and provides a changelog. Last, you can sign-up to receive emails notifying you of new software updates.

The new site isn’t a one page cluster**** as it was in the past, but it does require that you click a couple of extra links to get where you need to go. Overall, it’s a much better design that in the end, offers you more info than you were getting in the past.

On a related note, the support pages for the original RAZR and RAZR MAXX now say that the “expected” rollout of Jelly Bean should begin in Q1 of 2013. Motorola had previously mentioned this on places like Facebook, however, their official timeline never did reflect this timeframe. The previous versions of the update timeline simply said that both devices would be updated to Jelly Bean, but gave no indication as to when.

Let’s not forget that Moto accidentally pushed a Jelly Bean build to the original RAZR back on X-mas Eve. That was clearly an early test build, but one that seemed fairly stable for the most part. I don’t know what’s holding them back from finally pushing it out, but we all know how the software update game works when carriers are involved. Q1 does have another month in it, so try to stay patient.

Also of note, the Motorola PC software was updated this morning. While I rarely use it and am not incredibly versed in its feature-set, there is an option listed as “Check for device update.” I’ll leave those of you who have used the software more than I to confirm whether or not this is new. If so, this could essentially be another way for Motorola to get updates to your devices. I’d assume they’ll still need carrier approval, but this could help you skip the waiting line for OTA updates.

Other device news:

XOOM LTE still listed as “will be upgraded to Jelly Bean.”

XYboards are still under review for Jelly Bean. “Stay tuned for upgrade decision” the site reads

DROID 4 still says that it “will be upgraded to Jelly Bean.”

Bionic still says that it “will be upgraded to Jelly Bean.”

Can we just start referring to Dan Rosenberg (@djrbliss) as Mr. Root? The man that seems to have rooted every single Motorola device over the last couple of years has done it again, only this time with the original DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX running the latest OTA update of Jelly Bean (Android 4.1.2). That would be the update that was mistakenly pushed to your device on X-mas Eve.

For those of you who lost root during the update and have been waiting patiently for a new exploit to be found, your time has come. At this point, the method only works from a Windows PC, but it’s as simple as can be. At the source link, you’ll find a .zip file with a .bat file inside that needs to be run with your phone attached to your Windows machine with USB Debugging on.

Go have some fun. Be sure to donate to the cause if you can, and thank Mr. Root.

According to a number of readers with the original RAZR and RAZR MAXX, a massive update weighing in at 331MB and build number 98.72.8 is pushing out. There are no signs of an official update going out from any of the regular spots, so we aren’t sure if this is Jelly Bean, and someone at Motorola accidentally flipped the “Go!” switch or what. The build number starting with a 9 certainly resembles previous Jelly Bean updates on other Motorola phones. The RAZR HD’s update dropped in at 9.1.41.

As we have more, we’ll update this post.

Update: Most are reporting that the update is taking forever to download and that there isn’t much of a progress bar. Some claiming it’s Jelly Bean, but we have no confirmation yet. I’m also downloading it on my RAZR. Still updating…

Update 2: Readers Alan, Julianne, and whozat451 posted up this screenshot, matching the build number of 98.72.8, which also shows that it’s Jelly Bean (Android 4.1.2). Merry Xmas, DROID RAZR owners.

Update 3: We should point out that we have yet to hear anything official from Verizon or Motorola. Someone either screwed up badly and made this available early, or we’ll hear all about it on Wednesday morning, when everyone returns to work.

Update 4: The update may have been pulled. My download stopped midway through, as did many others’, saying that the “Download of update failed.” The phone is now showing as up-to-date. Assuming Moto and Verizon caught the early rollout and pulled from servers.

I should warn you that we do not know if this is a final build or not. It could be, but today’s update push also may have been a giant mistake. Proceed with caution. Drop on SD card (not internal storage), boot into recovery, select the file and update. Need to be on .211.

Manually install update:

Download file from above and drop on SD card (not internal storage)

Power phone off

Hold Power and both Volume Up and Down until boot screen appears

From boot screen, scroll down to “Recovery” with Volume Down

Press Volume Up to select it once it has been highlighted

When Android and exclamation show up, press both Volumes at the same time.

Then “install update from external storage” and find the file.

In 2012, we saw the Android smartphone world reach heights that I don’t imagine many predicted. On a spec front, 2012 was the year of quad-core processors, 2GB of RAM, HD displays, longer battery lives, and incredibly thin bodies. It seems like just yesterday that we were asking DL readers if they had a dual-core or single-core phone, yet here we are, with dual-core phones already becoming a thing of the past.

On a manufacturer front, 2012 was the year that Samsung proved that it really was the only big fish in a bowl full of minnows. We saw Motorola kick off its life as a Google-owned company, HTC struggle to make money even while releasing amazing phones, and LG take its turn as the face of the Nexus phone program.

In this post, I thought we’d talk a bit about all of that by listing out my top 10 phones of the year.

1. Samsung Galaxy S3 (review)

No surprise here, but the Galaxy S3 tops my list of phones for 2012. It was hyped as much as the next iPhone, yet it still delivered. It launched with an impressive suite of sharing capabilities that no other phone had seen, it used a big beautiful display with a body that was slim enough to feel great in hand, and with 2GB of RAM, it almost never stuttered or slowed down. But most importantly, Samsung showed the world that it has power in the mobile world by releasing one version of the phone across all carriers. As expected, though, people were quick to downplay it at launch, but over its first couple of months in stores, Samsung sold millions upon millions of units, fully cementing themselves as number 1 in the world.

2. LG Nexus 4 (review)

The Nexus 4, Google’s latest flagship device, has seen its share of ups and downs over its short life. It was hyped up for a couple of months in a variety of leaks, was never officially unveiled thanks to a hurricane, hated on because of its lack of LTE, and criticized mightily for its glass back. But you know what, to me, it’s still the 2nd best phone you can buy. It comes in at an unbelievably reasonable price of $299 (or $349), is the ultimate stock Android device since it’s the newest Nexus, carries future-proof specs, and isn’t tied to a carrier. It may be impossible to purchase, but that may also be a sign that Google has finally figured out a winning device formula.

3. Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (review)

When Samsung originally launched the Galaxy Note, the world was introduced to a confusing product plus one of the worst mashup words ever created in “phablet.” Was the phone a tablet or a phone or the “best of both worlds”? Surprisingly enough, that question doesn’t matter as it was a massive success. So Samsung did what any smart company would do with a successful product – launch a follow-up. The Galaxy Note 2, like the Galaxy S3, has already shipped by the millions, and may have even been the most anticipated device to launch on Verizon in some time (even over the Galaxy S3 and DROID brand). It’s too big for my liking, but you can’t argue with the impressive set of features that Samsung has built in. Also like the Galaxy S3, it blew past the competition with innovative features like multi-window, advanced S Pen technology, and camera sharing capabilities.

4. HTC DROID DNA (review)

Verizon passed up on the HTC One X in early 2012, something we weren’t sure we could forgive them for. Thankfully, they appear to have fully redeemed themselves by launching the world’s first 1080p smartphone, the DROID DNA. The device itself is beautiful to look at, is much smaller in stature than the Note 2, is surprisingly light and thin, has the best display in the business, actually lasts throughout a full day even with a semi-small battery, and carries top-of-the-line specs that few other phones contain. At $199 on contract, it’s also somewhat of a steal. Easily the best phone HTC has created since the next phone on our list, the One X.

5. HTC ONE X (review)

When HTC announced the One Series, which included the One X, the world was blown away. This was the new HTC, or at least one that was trying to make a comeback after a terrible end to 2011. The phone sported the best display in the business at the time, a best-in-class processor, the prettiest phone design we had ever seen, felt great in hand, was able to withstand a day’s beating on a single charge, and really set the standard for smartphones in 2012.

6. Motorola DROID RAZR M (review)

As we approached Motorola’s big Fall event, rumors started popping up over a mysterious device with the world’s first “edge-to-edge” display. While others were willing to bet the world on it being some secret device, we knew long beforehand that it was simply the DROID RAZR M, a mid-range device headed to Verizon. I don’t want that to sound like I’m discounting the phone, as it was easily my favorite from Motorola in 2012. Since the display was so close to being edge-to-edge, it has a small footprint, yet still packs mostly top-tier specs (other than the display). It has amazing battery life and feels tiny in hand compared to the rest of the smartphones being introduced these days. But that’s not a bad thing, as the display was still big enough to allow you to consume content without sacrificing a thing. We certainly hope that “edge-to-edge” is the future.

7. Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX HD (review)

This may surprise some readers, seeing the RAZR MAXX HD below the RAZR M, but this phone offered little in terms of “new.” It still rocks a massive battery that can get you through days before needing a charge, plus it comes equipped with an HD display, but it was released late enough that it was almost out of date by the time it went on sale. I’m a big fan of Motorola’s decision to slim down the skin they put on top of Android, and will never complain about their focus on battery life, but the RAZR HD needed to blow it out of the park, something it didn’t quite do.

8. LG Optimus G (review)

The LG Optimus G was the inspiration for the Nexus 4. It sports the same processor, RAM, display, and Crystal Reflection back design, so how could it not be on this list? While glass backsides will never appeal to me, this phone was a beast the minute it came out. In fact, with its quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, it was the highest spec’d phone on the planet for a at least a month. LG also took some time to create a software suite, much like Samsung had done, to try and help the phone stand out. They definitely succeeded. It’s too bad it was limited to AT&T and Sprint, as this phone could have potentially sold well on other carriers.

9. Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX (review)

Boasting a massive 3300mAh battery while maintaining a slim profile, the original RAZR MAXX set the standard for battery life in 2012. Well, it set it and then watched as no one could match it until Motorola released the HD version of it 10 months later. We aren’t sure what kind of voodoo Motorola has working in their battery department, but we love it. They are the only phone company on the planet that has been able to make ultra-slim phones with batteries you used to only see sold separately as “extended.” The RAZR MAXX itself wasn’t all that impressive outside of its battery, but in my book, this battery was good enough to make the list.

10. HTC One S (review)

Another original One Series phone, the HTC One S, finishes off my list of top 10 phones. With its ultra-thin body, fancy micro arc oxidation coating, and mostly top-tier set of specs, I was a big fan of this phone. Sure, it wasn’t as good as the One X, but it wasn’t supposed to be. HTC released it as an affordable mid-range phone, with a sleek profile, fun color scheme, and one of the best cameras in the business.

So there you have it, my top 10 phones of the year. I’m assuming there will be some disagreement, so let me hear it in the comments.

Sometimes you just got to have long battery life on your device, no matter what the cost. For uber power users of the new Samsung Galaxy Note 2, Mugen has a battery that will keep you going for days on end. Their new battery clocks in at 6,400mAh, which is almost double the RAZR MAXX’s 3,300mAh battery.

It may look ridiculous, but Mugen is promising double the battery life of the stock battery and even that is probably a conservative projection. All this juice doesn’t come cheap though, the regular price of this monster is $105, but is on a deal of sorts for early adopters. Hit the source link below if you’re ready to carry this battery around in your pocket.

Update: Reader Steve sent over a link to a Hyperion 6200mAh extended battery for the Note 2 that runs only $14.99 or $19.99 through Amazon. It sort of seems too good to be true to me, but others have had great luck with Hyperion batteries for other devices. There are versions that come with either a grey or white back, so you can match the color of your device. It doesn’t necessarily say that it is NFC-ready, but other batteries of theirs are. At that price, why not give it a shot?

I love the holidays. It seems that all of my favorite things go on sale, including smartphones. For a limited time, naturally, AmazonWireless is hosting a deal on select Verizon devices that should make for some happy buyers.

The original DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX are both on sale for only a penny, while upgrading and new customers can get the Galaxy S3 16GB for just $79.99. If you’re looking for one of Verizon’s new phones, you can grab the RAZR M for one cent as well, or grab the slightly aged HTC Rezound for the same price.

When Motorola first unveiled the new RAZR family at the beginning of September, they told us that they wouldn’t be able to update all of their previously released devices to Jelly Bean (Android 4.1). Since they had too large of a portfolio and would need to leave some out of the fun, they mentioned that owners of these devices would be able to buy a new Motorola phone and then trade in their old phone for $100. They posted the list of devices, this afternoon, which we have below.

So if the list of phones on the left is of those not receiving Jelly Bean, that means that the DROID Bionic and DROID 4 somehow made the list of phones in line to get it. That’s got to feel good, right? We should also point out that sources of ours said that Motorola is targeting Q1 for Android 4.1 updates for the original RAZR and RAZR MAXX, Bionic, and D4. The RAZR HD and RAZR MAXX HD should see 4.1 before the end of the year.

Update: Motorola has also made changes to their update schedule:

There you have it, folks, All of the new RAZRs will see Jelly Bean (Android 4.1) before the end of 2013. The Atrix HD, Photon Q, Electrify 2, DROID RAZR, RAZR MAXX, DROID 4, and Bionic will all receive it at some point in the future.

Via: Motorola

Cheers Matt and Mark!

The Jelly Bean update situation on Verizon is a tricky one. I say that because most Android phone manufacturers have yet to even update most of their phones to Ice Cream Sandwich. So how can we start talking about Jelly Bean updates? Well, we know that many of you are always looking for the most current information on this subject and thought we may as well create the official page for it just like we did with Android 4.0. Once word starts trickling out from Motorola, Samsung and the rest of the major players, we will update this post. I’d say that this is definitely one that you should bookmark. You will also find a shortcut to it in the sidebar.

If other phones make the cut or some of these don’t, we will add them to or remove from the list.
