For users of Google Apps for Business, today’s release of a free version of Quickoffice is great news. Once downloaded and logged in, you can start editing Word documents and Excel spreadsheets like the boss you are, then save directly and share through your Google Drive account. Until Google Drive can natively open those types of files and edit them, this is a fantastic workaround that paying Google Apps users will appreciate.

QuickOffice, one of the top office suites on Android, has been acquired by Google, the Mountain View based company announced this morning. Your immediate reaction is probably the same as ours – “Time for Google Drive to get some much needed love and polishing.”

Google wouldn’t mention Drive specifically, but they did have this to say:

Today, consumers, businesses and schools use Google Apps to get stuff done from anywhere, with anyone and on any device. Quickoffice has an established track record of enabling seamless interoperability with popular file formats, and we’ll be working on bringing their powerful technology to our Apps product suite.

We aren’t sure how much longer they will continue to keep QuickOffice up and running, but Google is looking forward to welcoming their team and users to the party.

We sat down with the folks at QuickOffice yesterday at CTIA to preview the newest version of the tablet and smartphone app dubbed version 5.0. It’s a pretty massive upgrade that introduces a variety of features for the business travel in all of us.

Along with some UI tweaks that add to the polish, QuickOffice is including a new sharing feature. That’s right, you will be able to share your work with colleagues on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc. They also tossed in some additional cloud services to help round out their portfolio – most notably are Evernote and Catch.

They told us to expect the update in mid-November at the same prices you are seeing right now.  More pictures after the break.
