Over the weekend, LG announced their Jelly Bean update schedule for a select few devices. As you can imagine, they are only willing to share update details for their flagship phones, a group that includes the Optimus G, Optimus LTE2, Optimus Vu, and Optimus Vu 2 (yes, they made a new one).

The Optimus LTE2 is expected to receive Android 4.1 in November, while the Optimus G will have to wait until December. The Optimus Vu and Vu 2 should be updated at some point in Q1 of 2013.

This time frame is probably geared towards the international variants of these devices, rather than those that have launched here in the U.S. So that means it could be past December before AT&T and Sprint’s Optimus G models receive Jelly Bean. As far as the Vu is concerned, it’s anyone’s guess as to when Verizon will approve its update. They still have yet to sign off on the Spectrum which was due to receive Ice Cream Sandwich 4 or 5 months ago. And I’m sure we don’t need to point out that it takes months for minimal Galaxy Nexus updates to get the green light. Ugh.

Verizon and LG finally made the Intuition official this morning, giving it an online launch date of September 6, with in-store availability coming the following week on September 10. The device will run $199 on new 2-year contract and have the ability to connect to Big Red’s ever-growing 4G LTE network.

For those that haven’t followed the story of the Intuition (known as the Optimus Vu overseas), simply think of it as a phone/tablet hybrid. With a 5″ HD display, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8MP camera, 1.3MP front camera, NFC chip, and Ice Cream Sandwich, it’s got everything you could ever ask for in a phone on the spec front. The only thing you have to sell to yourself is the odd 4:3 aspect ratio on the display, and the fact that it’s unbelievably awkward to hold. Is it a phone or a tablet?

The device also includes a Rubberdium pen, a suite of office apps, is business-ready, and is currently the option if a 5″ device is something you have been dying to have. If you would like to see the phone in action, be sure to check out our first look from CTIA in May.

It’s no secret that Verizon has plans to introduce LG’s big ol’ Optimus Vu here in the States. After all, it already cruised through the FCC, showed up in the wild in an entire gallery of pictures, and was outed as arriving this quarter in an LG press release. Today, we received additional info to add to that pile of evidence.

According to our sources, the Optimus Vu will change to the LG Intuition when Verizon announces it in the coming weeks. Once available, you will be able to pick one up for $199 on new 2-year contract or $549 at full retail.

With its 5″ display, this will be the first mega-phone to be released on Verizon, you know, since they skipped out on the Galaxy Note. After this phone, the world is sort of expecting HTC to bring it all home with their own 5″ device, only it will sport a 1080p display, something the Intuition can’t match.

Cheers ___!

In a round about way, LG announced last night that the Optimus Vu with 4G LTE will launch on Verizon this quarter. Their press release didn’t actually mention Big Red by name, but they said that the device will launch in the United States during the third quarter of this year. Since we have already seen an Optimus Vu variant cruise through the FCC with Verizon branding and 4G LTE radios, along with a set of in-the-wild photos of one, it’s safe to assume that it was indeed Big Red that they were referring to.

The only thing we need to know now is what the price will be. This may be a 5″ device with solid specs, but it’s such a niche product with the most random of display ratios, that I can’t imagine anyone is going to flock to this. In my opinion, the Vu should launch at no more than $149 on contract, maybe even at $99, however, I’d be surprised if it’s less than $200.

We spent some time with it in May at CTIA and came away completely unimpressed. Take a look below:

Oh, Verizon. Is the LG Optimus Vu really the answer? Apparently so, as the phone with their branding all over it has been pictured in the wild. It doesn’t appear to have changed in the slightest since we took a look at it during CTIA. The device still rocks a 5″ display with 4:3 ratio, a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon <del>S4</del> S3 processor, 4G LTE, 2080mAh battery, 8MP rear camera, and is only 8.5mm thick. When we first got our hands on it, it was still running Gingerbread, however, the device pictured above is running Ice Cream Sandwich and will likely ship with it.

So when can we see this disaster of a phone? It certainly seems like it should be soon. After all, we saw the Vu cruise through the FCC back at the end of June. We have no idea what this will retail for, but doubt that it will be cheap. Is this Verizon’s big ass phone option instead of the Galaxy Note? Unfortunately, it may be.

Interested?

We know that many of you were hoping for a release of the Samsung Galaxy Note on Verizon, but you may have to settle for LG’s Optimus Vu instead. According to the picture above, which is from an FCC filing for a device under model number LG-VS950, I’d say we could be seeing the Vu any day. We know it’s headed to Verizon because of the 4G LTE logo used, the frequency of LTE that was tested, and also because the model number matches up to previously released LG phones on Big Red. That giant square-ish form factor and speaker location are the giveaway that it’s the Vu.

For those not familiar, the Vu is a phone with a 5″ display, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 8MP camera, is only 8mm thick, runs Gingerbread, and is capable of running on 4G LTE. We actually got our hands on the device back in May, in case you want to see it in action.

Interested in the Vu?

Is the LG Optimus Vu the weirdest phone of the last year? Quite possibly. Once rumored to be LG’s knee-jerk reaction to the Samsung Galaxy Note, this thing is a monster. It’s being sold as a phone, but with its 5″ display, it’s much more. On the spec side, it has a 1.5GHz dual-core processor (probably the Snapdragon S4), LTE, 2080mAh battery, 8MP rear camera, and is only 8.5mm thick. Oh, it also still runs Gingerbread.

After playing with it, I can sort of see how it would be a nice coffee table device, maybe as a mini tablet. I’m still struggling to decide if I would ever want to carry around a device this big as my daily driver. You’ll see in the video below what I’m talking about. Aside from the size, it hums along nicely, has nifty screen capture tricks up its sleeves, takes decent pictures, and would be a joy to consume media on.

It has not been announced for the U.S. market yet.

There are absolutely zero surprises coming from LG at next week’s Mobile World Congress now thanks to some lengthy hands-on videos that Italian site Telefonino posted today. LG had already announced each of their major products to unveil – Optimus 4X HD, Optimus Vu, and Optimus 3D Max - but we had yet to really see them in the wild or in any sort of lengthy overview.

The first video we have below is for the Optimus 4X HD, which is one of the world’s first Tegra 3 quad-core devices. It also sports a 4.7″ HD IPS display, 1GB of RAM and runs Ice Cream Sandwich. After cruising through this video briefly, we get one of the first looks at an OEM skin over the top of Android 4.0. While I’ve never been a fan of LG, the fact that this phone is so buttery smooth thanks to the Tegra 3 chip has me almost getting over the fact that it looks nothing like ICS. OK, that’s a flat out lie. The LG skin on here is not pretty, BUT, how freakin’ fast is this phone? If you have spent any time whatsoever with an LG device in the past (including the Spectrum), you will not find a better example of how an OEM skin can completely bog down a phone. That is clearly not the case here with that Tegra 3 chip inside which should excite you all.

And did anyone else notice the new lock screen? Kind of cool actually. Try suing LG for that, Apple.

Optimus 4X HD

Click here to view the embedded video.

The Optimus 3D Max is next and is exactly what you would expect, another 3D phone. It’s fast enough in this demo with its OMAP4430 processor, has some fancy 3D carousel stuff going on, looks sharp, and runs Gingerbread. The skin that LG has gone with is an odd take on their previous skins, but for the most part looks to include all of the annoyances that we have seen in previous handsets. It’s definitely not the new skin that has been slapped onto the 4X HD.

The Optimus Vu is the last video below and is one that has left us speechless. I have no idea who they are trying to market this too (5-inch 4:3 display?), but I would love to sit down with the marketing research crew that decided to give it the thumbs up. What a silly phone. But hey, we all love choices, right? Just sit back and enjoy this one from afar.

LG has announced the Optimus Vu today ahead of Mobile World Congress. The device – as was rumored – will sport a 5″ IPS display with 4:3 aspect ratio, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 8MP rear camera, 1.3MP front camera, LTE, 2080mAh battery, Gingerbread and is just 8.5mm thick. It’s one odd device, to say the least. If you thought the Galaxy Note and its 5.3″ screen was pushing the limits, a phone with a 4:3 ratio is even crazier. While the device is incredibly thin, I’m not sure that many will jump for a phone that is built like a square. That is certainly a ton of screen real estate – we’ll see how the public reacts when it goes public at MWC later this month.

I’m going to be brutally honest here, this is not the way to re-invent the smartphone. With its 5″ screen, strange 4:3 aspect ratio, and the fact that it’s made by LG, this phone just looks silly. It’s officially called the Optimus Vu – at least in Korea – and packs a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, NFC chip, 8GB of internal storage, 8MP camera and runs Android 2.3. It may or may not have a stylus and who knows if it will ever make its way to the U.S. Could we see it at the end of this month in MWC? I certainly hope so, because I’m dying to hear the sales pitch.
