It’s almost Mother’s Day! This means it’s that time of year to thank mom for her hard work in managing the everyday life of a family with a bigger and clearer connection to everything important to her. See where we are going here? If she had a phone like the LG Optimus G Pro with its 5.5″ 1080p display, quad-core processor, multi-tasking capabilities, and brilliant 13MP camera, she could maintain her amazing motherly self in a much more efficient manner.
Either way, we have one to giveaway thanks to our friends at AT&T. Think of this as the best Mother’s Day present you could possibly give to mom this weekend, whether she’s in need of a new smartphone or not.

If she’s scared of such a big phone or its power and abundance of features, feel free to toss out a few of these device highlights when handing it off to her:

We are putting our bets on the device’s specs to not change too much from the Korean version, which is one beast of a device.

The Korean version sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 chip, a monster 5.5″ 1080p display, 13MP camera, and a large suite of proprietary software much like Samsung does with their Galaxy lineup of devices.

Next week, we will know 100% what to expect for the US.

May 1 has been saved on our calendars since last Tuesday when LG announced a mobile-related event for that evening. The “save the date” spoke of geniuses and brilliance, which didn’t necessarily make much sense at the time. However, thanks to the official invite to the event that we received today, we now understand the references.

LG plans to announce its oversized device (5.5″ 1080p display), the Optimus G Pro, for the U.S. with a live concert from Atlas Genius. During the event, they want us all to “experience true brilliance in the making,” a reference to the overall package delivered in the G Pro.

For those not familiar, the Optimus G Pro is very similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Note 2, yet has pumped up specs in a number of areas, most importantly the display. It also has the newest processor from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 600, a 13MP camera, and all sorts of software enhancements built specifically for a device this size. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with an S Pen or anything along those lines.

We’ll be there to soak it all in!

LG dropped a save-the-date note into our inbox this afternoon, asking us to clear our calendars for a May 1 press event in New York City. The press invite mentions little, only providing two quotes of “Share the genius” and “Capture the spotlight in true brilliance.” While neither mean a thing to me, one would expect this event to feature their new Optimus G Pro, since no other phone from them is on our radar at this time.

The Optimus G Pro is LG’s 5.5″ device similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Note 2, but with slightly better specs. Instead of a 720p display, it sports a full 1080p resolution, along with a 13MP camera, 32GB of internal storage, microSD card slot, and LTE. It even looks a lot like a Note 2, with its physical home button, however, there is no S Pen or pen-like functionality to the device. Early reviews on Korean Optimus G pros have been mostly positive, but could get even better once the device receives its “value pack” upgrade that features a smart pause video feature and dual camera.

We’ll be sure to be on hand for whatever it is they announce.

LG is attempting to take Samsung’s 2010-2011 approach to success in the smartphone business – copy everything your biggest competitor does, but try to do it first and loudest if you can. If you remember back on the eve of Samsung’s Galaxy S4 unveiling, LG announced new eye-recognition tech that would be released as a software value pack for smartphones like the Optimus G Pro. For weeks leading up to Samsung’s announcement, all rumors focused on Samsung putting identical features into the Galaxy S4, so to see LG drop a press note about the same exact tech was worthy of an eye-roll or two. But hey, what can you do when you are down?

So that value pack is now even more official, if you will, thanks to a video highlighting all of the features that was uploaded to LG’s YouTube channel last night. It’s coming to the Optimus G Pro and includes features like Smart Video, Dual Camera, and Pause-&-Resume video recording. Yes, all of these are Galaxy S4 features, though one of them (Pause-&-Resume) has been around for some time on previous Galaxy models. But Smart Video is identical to Smart Pause in that it uses your eyes to recognize whether or not you are staring at your screen while watching video. Should you turn away, the video will automatically pause. Turn back, and it resumes.

Dual Camera is also a Galaxy S4 feature, however, LG couldn’t quite match Samsung on this one. Dual Camera allows a user to use the front and rear cameras at the same time to snap a dual-picture. But with LG’s software enhancement, that’s all you can do. Samsung found a way to allow users to record dual-videos as well.

We applaud the effort by LG, that’s for sure. They’ve come a long way in the last year and are actually more interested in their devices then ever, especially after being chosen by Google to produce the latest Nexus.

Curious about LG’s next flagship and when we can expect it to arrive on our shores? According to those close to the matter, the Optimus G Pro is set to make its way to the U.S. via AT&T, with a rumored launch date of some time in May, but we are also hearing June. The Optimus G Pro launched in Japan with a 5″ HD display, but apparently the American variant is set to come with a 5.5″ display instead, just like last year’s Galaxy Note 2.

In terms of specs, we are looking at a 5.5″ 1080p display, Snapdragon 600 processor clocked at 1.7GHz, 13MP back-facing shooter, 2GB of RAM, and a microSD slot for more storage. Keep in mind, when this device does launch, it will be going head-to-head with Samsung’s Galaxy S4, as well as HTC’s One. It’s starting to shape up to be a major battle for smartphone sales here in the U.S. during Q2.

With LG on the good side of American buyers again, is anyone interested? This is one beast of a device.

When Samsung takes the stage tomorrow to announce the Galaxy S4, we are expecting them to announce at least one new eye recognition feature for TouchWiz (I don’t care what Bloomberg says). Thanks to leaked builds of their custom skin for both the Galaxy S3 and S4, an eye scrolling feature for browsers and emails could arrive, but we should also see one that will recognize your eyes as you watch a video. If you were take your eyes away from your screen as a clip is playing, your phone will recognize the change and stop playback. As you return your focus from wherever it was, the clip should then kick back on.

Sounds fun, right? Well, in an attempt to steal some of Samsung’s fire, LG has gone ahead and announced the exact same start/stop eye recognition feature for their very own Optimus G Pro.

In the press release (yes, they actually sent out an entire press release for a single feature), they mention that the feature isn’t available yet, but it will be. It will arrive next month in Korea along with a dual-camera feature that dual-records with both the front and rear cameras at the same time with a picture-in-picture composition.

Is it just me, or is LG to Samsung what Samsung once was to Apple?

EYE RECOGNITION TO BRING NEW LEVEL OF ENTERTAINMENT CONVENIENCE TO LG SMARTPHONE
Technology to Debut in Smart Video Feature in Optimus G Pro

SEOUL, Mar. 14, 2013 — Smart Video, a new multimedia UX feature from LG Electronics (LG), will be unveiled for the first time in the Optimus G Pro. Smart Video takes viewing videos on mobile devices to a whole new level of convenience with eye recognition that eliminates the need to manually control playback during the viewing experience.

Through the implementation of advanced eye recognition technology, Smart Video recognizes the position of the viewer’s eyes and automatically plays or stops the video without any manual input from the user. When the viewer’s eyes are no longer focused on the smartphone display, the front camera recognizes this and immediately pauses the video automatically. Once the user’s gaze returns to the smartphone, the video resumes playback from the point last viewed.

In addition to the Smart Video feature, Optimus G Pro will also be equipped with the world’s first Dual Camera function. The Dual Camera feature is an extension of the Dual Recording feature which debuted on the Optimus G Pro introduced in the Korean market last month. Dual Camera simultaneously captures photographs using both the front and back cameras for a picture-in-picture composition. Users can now be a part of the story, not just observers.

“LG is continuously innovating to offer creative ways to offer a user experience that adds value to our customers,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Elec-tronics Mobile Communications Company. “It’s the positive UX that will differentiate smartphones in 2013 and beyond, not only cutting-edge hardware specs.”
The Smart Video and Dual Camera features will be introduced as a part of the Value Pack upgrade which will be offered for the Optimus G Pro in the Korean market next month. These features will also be made available for some LG premium smartphones in the future.

Other features in the Value Pack upgrade include:
• Magic Remote Pad and Text Keypad via the QRemote function. These new options for QRemote work specifically with LG
Smart TVs to enhance convenience when using Optimus G Pro as a remote control for LG Smart TVs.
• The Smart LED Lighting outlining the home button of the Optimus G Pro will be upgraded so users can customize the colors
to correspond to their favorite contacts. The flashing of the LED in different colors will allow users to identify the source of
incoming calls, missed calls, unread messages and emails.
• Video Pause/Resume allows the user to stop and start in record mode for one continuous video file.
• The first Color Emoticons in an Android smartphone for more personalized text messages.

Showing off some of the sweet camera software in their new Optimus G Pro smartphone, LG posted up this video to their official YouTube account. It gives us a look at the Panorama VR software, most likely based off of Google’s Photo Sphere, and the G Pro’s ability to take some good looking panorama shots. Only there is just one small thing…

Since we don’t speak Korean, we will have to assume that LG’s video is intentionally copying Apple, but then outdoing them with the Panorama VR aspect. Well played, LG. I think.

Starting next week, the mobile landscape will change greatly as LG is set to announce and show off their new 2013 smartphone lineup at MWC in Barcelona. While we have already seen their new Optimus G Pro in the flesh, this new teaser video hints that we might be seeing a couple of mystery devices as well.

As you will notice in the video, they put emphasis on a few letters such as G, F, and V. What each letters means, whether they stand for the the name of a new device or something along those lines, who knows.

As for OEM’s teasing devices, I’m about worn out after HTC’s month-long campaign.

LG finally fully unveiled the Optimus G Pro yesterday. The device will be on display at Mobile World Congress next week before it makes its way to the U.S. in Q2 of this year. The official specs, which we mostly knew, are now confirmed as a 5.5″ FHD (1080p) display (400ppi), 2GB RAM, 32GB internal storage (expandable SD slot to 32GB), 13MP rear camera 2.1MP front camera, 3140mAh battery, is only 9.4mm thick, runs Android 4.1.2, and is powered by the brand new Snapdragon 600 processor clocked at 1.7GHz.

Beyond specs, the Optimus G Pro will feature “advanced UX features” that were developed specifically for this device. Two of them are Dual Recording mode and Virtual Reality Panorama. Dual Recording allows users to capture video with both the front and rear cameras at the same time in a picture-in-picture experience. VR Panorama sounds a lot like Google’s Photo Sphere, in that you can pan horizontally and vertically to grab full 360-degree shots.

The device sounds incredibly impressive on paper, especially with the new Snapdragon processor and 1080p 5.5″ display. We don’t know pricing or carrier partners at this time.

Just now, LG went ahead and announced the Optimus G Pro for markets other than Japan. Much like the Japanese variant, this device sports a full 5.5″ HD 1080p display, along with a quad-core processor. The device will come in both black and white, while incorporating a curved glass design, giving the phone a 2.5D effect.

While taking a quick glimpse at the backside of the device, you will notice a glimmering “Digital Cube” effect. Although, overall design wise, this phone looks like a mix of the Galaxy S3′s front and the One X’s back. Looks pretty nice if you ask us.

As far as when we can expect it to hit the States, there is no word from LG. What we do know is that they are shooting for a late February release date in some markets, which should place it in prime time for bloggers to get their hands on it in Barcelona at this year’s MWC.

Yesterday, LG took to Facebook to tease their next mobile product in the most vague and generic of ways. In fact, all the teaser image said was “New series will be unveiled,” only they forgot to mention a where, when, or what. Well, they finished off the teaser today by posting up a new video to YouTube that confirms it will be a product unveiling at MWC later this month.

In the teaser, we see a lot of screen splitting and slicing, though I’m not sure I’m willing to take that as a reference to a razer thin design or something along those lines. What we do know for sure is that “Breakthrough will be made at MWC 2013.” Wait, is that even a sentence? The device will also be premium, stylish, creative, speedy, powerful, and fresh, while making a world of difference.

Maybe it’s the 5.5″ Optimus G Pro that we saw pictured this morning.

Feel free to watch it and see if they have hidden some secret message deep within that we aren’t figuring out.

Just a few weeks ago we got news that the LG Optimus G Pro would be coming to Japanese carriers featuring a 5″ screen and slightly better specs than the original G. If the leaked device pictured above is to be believed, LG didn’t think that was big enough to compete with the likes of the Galaxy Note 2. Phone Arena has pictures that suggest a larger 5.5″ device will be coming soon featuring even better specs.

That 5.5″ screen is reportedly at a resolution of 1080×1920 (full HD LCD-IPS), it’ll come with 4G LTE, 2GB of RAM, a 13MP camera on the back and 2MP camera on the front. This should all sound familiar since they are comparable to the Optimus G Pro that we’ve already heard announced, but they get better. LG has bumped the battery up to an impressive 3,140 mAh and added in 32GB of storage as well as an SDcard slot.

This device already looks enough like the Galaxy Note 2, do you think it will be able to compete if it comes to the US?
