Love it or hate it, HTC is fully behind their Android skin, Sense. With each upgrade it is promised to be slimmer and easier to use, but still people complain about it getting in the way of their phone. Sense 5 debuted with their newest flagship the HTC One this year, but according to an HTC ROM developer, Sense 5 is upcoming for last year’s device, the One X.

If this is true, HTC also plans to bring two of the highest profile features from this year’s device back to the One X as well. The curated social news-stream BlinkFeed and the awesome camera feature Zoes are planned to be included in this update as well. With an update of this size however, it could be a while before we see it on the international version of the One X and even longer before any US versions of the device see it. If we hear anything, we will be sure to keep you posted.

Apparently, the HTC One X on AT&T has been more of an ignored step-child device than Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus, which has at least been running a Jelly Bean build for some time now and even sports Android 4.2.2 after a recent update. Unfortunately for One X users, they have been stuck on Ice Cream Sandwich since they bought the device, with no real word from AT&T and watching as mid-range device after mid-range device received Android 4.1+ updates.

Finally, the wait is over. AT&T announced that owners of the One X can expect Android 4.1 to begin rolling out to their phones starting this morning. Of course, AT&T goes over the benefits of what Android 4.1 brings to a device (Google Now, expandable notifications, etc.), but now begins the uphill battle for One X owners to want Android 4.2.2.

What can I say, it’s a never ending vicious cycle.

A curious user over on HTC’s Facebook decided to ask when his One X would receive an update to Sense 5, with HTC throwing down a good answer. According to whoever runs their FB page, the global variants of the One X, One X+, One S, and HTC Butterfly will all receive an update to Sense 5 within the “next few months.”

Of course, you have to be somewhat hesitant when they give a broad time frame such as that. Plus, they mentioned “global.” That could mean Europeans could see it well ahead of the US, or vice versa. And let’s not forget our Ones have carriers slowing down this process as well. And if you didn’t notice already, there was no mention of Verizon’s DROID DNA.

Either way, if 2013 could be the year of update info transparency on the part of OEM’s and carriers, I think we would all be happy.

A couple of weeks ago, the DROID DNA received somewhat of an S-OFF through the work of a phone repair shop who had a special tool that they would use on your device should you be willing to pay at least $45. It really wasn’t all that practical. And hopefully, no one actually used the service, because a much simpler S-OFF method has been released tonight by beaups and jcase of TeamAndIRC.

The method asks that you have adb and fastboot up and running, are rooted and have superCID. If you are into tinkering with your phone at all, I hope you at least have the adb, fastboot and rooting part already taken care of. If you do not have superCID, there is a 2nd link below to get you there before proceeding with S-OFF.

Once you meet the requirements, a file download followed by a handful of adb commands with a reboot here or there will get you to S-OFF and a phone that is much less a pain in the rear to flash ROMs and kernels to.

All of the instructions can be found at the links below.

This method also works for the One XL and One S.

We expect the official unveiling of HTC’s M7 device at a press conference scheduled for February 19, but if any more information leaks, there won’t be anything left. The latest details we have come from the fairly reliable evleaks twitter account. Posted this morning, he believes that the M7 will come to market under the name “HTC One.”

This is a bit interesting since HTC’s last big hit was the One X and making this just the One might cause a bit of confusion in the market. HTC most likely has some marketing reason behind the name, but it’s not quite clear yet. Hopefully they’ll explain a few things at their upcoming event.

Think this a wise move on HTC’s part?

With 2012 behind us, it only makes sense that we start looking ahead in an attempt to prepare ourselves for what’s to come. CES ended with little bang, so that means we have Mobile World Congress, CTIA, Google I/O, IFA, and stand-alone press events left to bring us the real goods. Will we see Motorola’s “X” phone and be blown away? Can HTC make a comeback with the next line of One Series phones (assuming they continue that line)? Will LG really introduce new Nexus devices? Or does it all really just come down to whatever Samsung and Google tell us to buy in late Spring or early Summer?

You tell us what you are most looking forward to and why.

For me personally, it’s all about that Motorola “X” phone and then whatever it is that Google decides to surprise us with at I/O, which of course could be the “X” phone. Samsung and the Galaxy S4 will undoubtedly be all over our radar, but Motorola remains the big question mark here. This is the “new” Moto after all, so hopefully “new” means awesome.

In 2012, we saw the Android smartphone world reach heights that I don’t imagine many predicted. On a spec front, 2012 was the year of quad-core processors, 2GB of RAM, HD displays, longer battery lives, and incredibly thin bodies. It seems like just yesterday that we were asking DL readers if they had a dual-core or single-core phone, yet here we are, with dual-core phones already becoming a thing of the past.

On a manufacturer front, 2012 was the year that Samsung proved that it really was the only big fish in a bowl full of minnows. We saw Motorola kick off its life as a Google-owned company, HTC struggle to make money even while releasing amazing phones, and LG take its turn as the face of the Nexus phone program.

In this post, I thought we’d talk a bit about all of that by listing out my top 10 phones of the year.

1. Samsung Galaxy S3 (review)

No surprise here, but the Galaxy S3 tops my list of phones for 2012. It was hyped as much as the next iPhone, yet it still delivered. It launched with an impressive suite of sharing capabilities that no other phone had seen, it used a big beautiful display with a body that was slim enough to feel great in hand, and with 2GB of RAM, it almost never stuttered or slowed down. But most importantly, Samsung showed the world that it has power in the mobile world by releasing one version of the phone across all carriers. As expected, though, people were quick to downplay it at launch, but over its first couple of months in stores, Samsung sold millions upon millions of units, fully cementing themselves as number 1 in the world.

2. LG Nexus 4 (review)

The Nexus 4, Google’s latest flagship device, has seen its share of ups and downs over its short life. It was hyped up for a couple of months in a variety of leaks, was never officially unveiled thanks to a hurricane, hated on because of its lack of LTE, and criticized mightily for its glass back. But you know what, to me, it’s still the 2nd best phone you can buy. It comes in at an unbelievably reasonable price of $299 (or $349), is the ultimate stock Android device since it’s the newest Nexus, carries future-proof specs, and isn’t tied to a carrier. It may be impossible to purchase, but that may also be a sign that Google has finally figured out a winning device formula.

3. Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (review)

When Samsung originally launched the Galaxy Note, the world was introduced to a confusing product plus one of the worst mashup words ever created in “phablet.” Was the phone a tablet or a phone or the “best of both worlds”? Surprisingly enough, that question doesn’t matter as it was a massive success. So Samsung did what any smart company would do with a successful product – launch a follow-up. The Galaxy Note 2, like the Galaxy S3, has already shipped by the millions, and may have even been the most anticipated device to launch on Verizon in some time (even over the Galaxy S3 and DROID brand). It’s too big for my liking, but you can’t argue with the impressive set of features that Samsung has built in. Also like the Galaxy S3, it blew past the competition with innovative features like multi-window, advanced S Pen technology, and camera sharing capabilities.

4. HTC DROID DNA (review)

Verizon passed up on the HTC One X in early 2012, something we weren’t sure we could forgive them for. Thankfully, they appear to have fully redeemed themselves by launching the world’s first 1080p smartphone, the DROID DNA. The device itself is beautiful to look at, is much smaller in stature than the Note 2, is surprisingly light and thin, has the best display in the business, actually lasts throughout a full day even with a semi-small battery, and carries top-of-the-line specs that few other phones contain. At $199 on contract, it’s also somewhat of a steal. Easily the best phone HTC has created since the next phone on our list, the One X.

5. HTC ONE X (review)

When HTC announced the One Series, which included the One X, the world was blown away. This was the new HTC, or at least one that was trying to make a comeback after a terrible end to 2011. The phone sported the best display in the business at the time, a best-in-class processor, the prettiest phone design we had ever seen, felt great in hand, was able to withstand a day’s beating on a single charge, and really set the standard for smartphones in 2012.

6. Motorola DROID RAZR M (review)

As we approached Motorola’s big Fall event, rumors started popping up over a mysterious device with the world’s first “edge-to-edge” display. While others were willing to bet the world on it being some secret device, we knew long beforehand that it was simply the DROID RAZR M, a mid-range device headed to Verizon. I don’t want that to sound like I’m discounting the phone, as it was easily my favorite from Motorola in 2012. Since the display was so close to being edge-to-edge, it has a small footprint, yet still packs mostly top-tier specs (other than the display). It has amazing battery life and feels tiny in hand compared to the rest of the smartphones being introduced these days. But that’s not a bad thing, as the display was still big enough to allow you to consume content without sacrificing a thing. We certainly hope that “edge-to-edge” is the future.

7. Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX HD (review)

This may surprise some readers, seeing the RAZR MAXX HD below the RAZR M, but this phone offered little in terms of “new.” It still rocks a massive battery that can get you through days before needing a charge, plus it comes equipped with an HD display, but it was released late enough that it was almost out of date by the time it went on sale. I’m a big fan of Motorola’s decision to slim down the skin they put on top of Android, and will never complain about their focus on battery life, but the RAZR HD needed to blow it out of the park, something it didn’t quite do.

8. LG Optimus G (review)

The LG Optimus G was the inspiration for the Nexus 4. It sports the same processor, RAM, display, and Crystal Reflection back design, so how could it not be on this list? While glass backsides will never appeal to me, this phone was a beast the minute it came out. In fact, with its quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, it was the highest spec’d phone on the planet for a at least a month. LG also took some time to create a software suite, much like Samsung had done, to try and help the phone stand out. They definitely succeeded. It’s too bad it was limited to AT&T and Sprint, as this phone could have potentially sold well on other carriers.

9. Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX (review)

Boasting a massive 3300mAh battery while maintaining a slim profile, the original RAZR MAXX set the standard for battery life in 2012. Well, it set it and then watched as no one could match it until Motorola released the HD version of it 10 months later. We aren’t sure what kind of voodoo Motorola has working in their battery department, but we love it. They are the only phone company on the planet that has been able to make ultra-slim phones with batteries you used to only see sold separately as “extended.” The RAZR MAXX itself wasn’t all that impressive outside of its battery, but in my book, this battery was good enough to make the list.

10. HTC One S (review)

Another original One Series phone, the HTC One S, finishes off my list of top 10 phones. With its ultra-thin body, fancy micro arc oxidation coating, and mostly top-tier set of specs, I was a big fan of this phone. Sure, it wasn’t as good as the One X, but it wasn’t supposed to be. HTC released it as an affordable mid-range phone, with a sleek profile, fun color scheme, and one of the best cameras in the business.

So there you have it, my top 10 phones of the year. I’m assuming there will be some disagreement, so let me hear it in the comments.

HTC has updated their device FAQ for anyone looking to find information on when and if their device will receive Jelly Bean. Long story short, HTC has made it clear that in general, devices with 512MB of RAM or less will more than likely not receive Jelly Bean. Unfortunately, that probably goes for you too Thunderbolt owners, even with your 768MB of RAM. Other devices from HTC that are equipped with just 512MB of RAM are the One V and Desire C.

We work hard to ensure each of our products has the optimal user experience and therefore some products will remain at their current version of Android. In general, devices with 512MB RAM or less will not be upgraded to Android 4.1. As we identify other devices that will not be upgraded, we’ll provide updated information.

As for which devices will definitely get JB, HTC says they are prioritizing the update for the devices that were launched in 2012, then working their way back. The company has quite the portfolio to work through, and as you most likely already guessed, it could take quite some time before we see updates go live for the Rezound, EVO 3D, and other once-flagship devices.

Now, to be fair, Thunderbolt owners should have already known that their devices wouldn’t officially see Jelly Bean. But as this calendar year ticks down towards the new year, the device still has yet to receive Ice Cream Sandwich which was supposed to hit the device by the end of August.

In a little over two weeks, Black Friday will be upon us. Over the last couple of years, we have seen this day become flooded with deals on the latest and greatest in Android products, something that likely won’t change this year. In fact, RadioShack’s ad has already been posted for the world to see, and as expected, includes a number of Android smartphones at rock bottom prices.

The most interesting of the bunch may be the Samsung Stratosphere 2, which has yet to receive an announcement or launch date publicly from Verizon. We have covered it plenty, but here we are two weeks out from Black Friday without an official statement. If RadioShack is expecting to sell it for free, giving you a $100 savings, the phone will likely debut at $99 on 2-year contract. We should point out that this is the only device with a physical slideout keyboard on Big Red that we have heard of in months.

Along with the Stratosphere 2, you’ll find the Galaxy S3 on Sprint and AT&T for $49 on new lines or $99 as an upgrade. The HTC One X and Galaxy S2 will be free, plus you will also receive a $10 coupon for every $50 you spend at The Shack.

We’ll do our best to bring you all of the hottest Black Friday deals.

While I haven’t followed the story of AT&T’s HTC One X all that closely, I was under the impression that it had yet to be rooted on software version 2.20. As of today, that is no longer the case, thanks again to @djrbliss. He has created a root tool that will give you temporary root, which then allows you to unlock the bootloader of your device via HTCDev, and potentially flash a custom recovery followed by a rooted ROM to keep root. (Hopefully that made some sort of sense).

The instructions are after the break, but I highly recommend that you hit up the XDA thread at the bottom for full support. Congrats AT&T One X owners, and welcome to the party.

On a related note, isn’t there an $823 bounty for rooting this phone?

Instructions

Download the exploit from: http://vulnfactory.org/public/X_Factor_Windows.zip

Extract the entire zip file.

Connect your device via USB, ensure you have the latest HTC USB drivers installed, and ensure USB debugging mode is enabled.

Double-click “run.bat”.

Follow the instructions printed by the exploit. You will need to authorize two backup restorations during the exploit’s execution.

If the exploit is successful, it will print “[+] Set CID!”. If it does not print this, the exploit has failed, so please do not continue.

The exploit will automatically reboot into bootloader mode. Press enter after bootloader mode is finished booting, and the exploit will print your CID. If the exploit was successful, it should return “11111111″ as your CID.

If your CID was successfully set, press enter to generate an unlock token.

Visit htcdev.com, navigate to the “Bootloader unlock” section, choose “All other supported models” from the drop-down menu, and provide the unlock token when asked.

After unlocking the bootloader, you can flash a custom recovery partition via fastboot, boot into recovery mode, and use a recovery ADB shell or install from an update.zip to install Superuser and su (I do not provide support for custom recoveries, but this is a straightforward process that other people can help with).

Along with its announcement of the One X+, HTC also announced that Jelly Bean updates for the One X and One S will arrive this month. Yep, we’re talking October. We sort of assume that they mean for the international variants, with a slow rollout eventually through the U.S., as U.S. carriers tend to be the slowest in approving software updates.

The press release for the One X+ only mentioned the following:

The Android Jelly Bean with HTC Sense™ 4+ update is scheduled to begin rolling out for the HTC One™ S and HTC One™ X from October.

The AT&T press release for the One X+ would only mention this:

In the future, the original HTC One X and HTC One VX will be upgraded to HTC Sense 4+ with Android Jelly Bean andwill include the improved camera capabilities and new Tap and Go function found in the HTC One X+.

So that leads us to believe that it could be a bit longer for those who own the A&T version of the One X.

HTC announced the One X+ this morning, putting to bed months of rumors that seem to have dragged on for far too long. The device, as you can see from the pictures, looks very similar to the original One X, however, the insides have been beefed up to make this one of the most impressive phones to date.

It now sports a Tegra 3 AP37 quad-core processor which is newer than the early-2012 T3 and has been clocked at 1.7GHz. More importantly, it also comes equipped with LTE that is said to be 67% faster than the One X with LTE. HTC managed to throw in a bigger 2100mAh battery and 64GB of internal storage as well.

On the software side of things, they are introducing the newest version of Sense known as Sense 4+, running atop Jelly Bean (Android 4.1). From what we can tell from the press release, this new version includes better front facing camera support for those late night bathroom shots, a Sightseeing mode for quick moment capturing, and new gallery views.

The device will launch exclusively on AT&T “soon” for the U.S. and will arrive in Europe and parts of Asia during the month of October.

*Euro version pictured. AT&T version will come in an exclusive “carbon black” finish.

Powered by the nation’s largest 4G network, all three HTC devices will access the AT&T 4G LTE network and are equipped with enhanced audio and video features, making it easier-and faster – for customers to stay connected and entertained while on the go.

New HTC One™ Devices Coming Soon

AT&T, the exclusive provider of the HTC One X, will add two more exclusive devices from the popular HTC One series – the HTC One X+ and the HTC One VX.

The HTC One X+ will be the first smartphone in the U.S. to feature HTC Sense 4+ and among the first smartphones for AT&T customers to operate on the Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) platform. HTC One X+ combines superior performance, longer battery life and more internalstorage with the iconic design of the original HTC One X, now in an exclusive carbon black finish. It will be the first AT&T smartphone to combine Android 4.1 and a quad-core processor.

A 1.7 GHz Tegra 3 NVIDIA quad-core processor plus a battery-saving fifth core will give customers a unique “4 + 1″ capability to save power using one core for everyday use and kicks into full quad-core mode for demanding apps, like video and gaming.

The HTC One X+ has a 4.7-inch, 720p HD screen and features a predictive-touch keyboard as well as voice recognition. The device also builds on the impressive 8 megapixel rear-facing HD camera of the HTC One X that can quickly auto-focus and zero in on a subject. Perfect for still shots or video, the HTC One X+ integrates the HTC ImageChip which reduces noise, removes color bias and enhances the overall picture quality and 64GB of internal memory is packed into the smartphone to store more high quality photos and video, music, movies and apps.

The HTC One VX is ideal for those looking for an affordable Androidsmartphone and a premium experience. The HTC One VX sports one of the slimmest unibody form factors in the industry at just 9.19 millimeters thin. The 4.5-inch display is laminated with scratch-resistant Corning® Gorilla® Glass which aids in durability and reduces light reflection. A 5-megapixel camera, which goes from lock screen to shooting photos in under a second, offers continuous shooting at 4 frames per second. For those that can’t quite decide whether they want to capture the moment in pictures or video, taking a still from a video with Video Pic™.

Windows Phone 8X by HTC to Arrive in November

The new Windows Phone 8X by HTC will be the first-ever Windows Phone smartphone with built-in Beats Audio™ technology. Beats Audio By Dre delivers authentic, studio-quality sound and the unique audio amplifier powering the3.5mm audio jack and speaker boosts the signal for even better sound for music, video and even gaming, so you actually hear the music as it was intended. The 4.3-inch 720p HD display and 8 megapixel rear-facing camera allows you to capture and view great photos and video-even in low light.
