Over the last few months, we’ve been discussing Android-powered cameras from Nikon and Samsung. Today, Nikon’s Coolpix S800c is up for sale on Amazon for the US market. Priced at $350, it is powered by Android 2.3 “Gingerbread” and packs some decent camera specs for anyone looking to take some good quality photos. It features a 10x optical zoom lens, 16MP sensor, GPS, 3.5-inch WVGA AMOLED display, as well as WiFi for instant sharing through social network apps. 

It may still seem like a novelty, but with Samsung’s Galaxy Camera hitting AT&T on a data plan and featuring much beefier specs, toys like this may become more of the norm.

Nikon’s highly anticipated Android-powered smartcamera has officially arrived. The Nikon Coolpix S800c can be purchased for $350 and actually packs quite a punch. With built in GPS, a 10x optical zoom lens, 16 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, 3.5-inch OLED WVGA touchscreen, 1080p movie capture mode and Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), it’s an Android fanboy’s photography dream.  

With launch taking place next month, it’s going to be awesome to see how Android will affect the camera’s battery life, how we’ll use media sharing applications through the camera, and pairing it with our smartphones. You can grab it in white or black for $350.

The Android-powered camera from Nikon has been receiving plenty of hype as of late. Awesomely enough, some leaked images from Nikon Rumors of the camera have hit the web and gives us a good look at what to expect from Nikon. Stock Gingerbread?

When we first heard it would be running Android, we figured they would be throwing over a skin that would basically make the device purely a camera experience, but from this picture, it looks like you’re going to be able to do plenty of other stuff. We see a browser icon, contacts, calendar, and email icon. Strange.

Since this is leaked, we’ll leave the jury out on this one until Nikon’s official announcement which is penciled in for this Wednesday (August 22). Either way, it looks kinda cool.

According to Nikon Rumors, Nikon is said to be prepping for their announcement of the company’s first Android-powered camera, the Nikon S800. The camera is part of their point-and-shoot range so don’t expect the specs to blow your mind. As for what is known, we are looking at a 25-250mm lens, 3.5-inch OLED display, and built-in GPS and WiFi connectivity.

In terms of Android, Gingerbread is said to be the OS of choice, but much isn’t known about any type of skin that will go on top. As a cherry on top, the device is said to be able to access Google Play for the downloading of applications that will add camera features. 

Nikon’s announcement is rumored for sometime late this month. Excited?

Coming late May, Nikon is to release the new WU-1a adapter to add transfer support and remote control ability for Android devices and your DSLR. With the dongle, you can easily snap a photo with your powerful lens, then transfer the image wirelessly to your smartphone for easy uploading to Facebook or Instagram. While that notion could possibly disgust professional photographers, it is nice to see Nikon embracing the social aspect of photo sharing that is taking place in the world currently.

In addition, you can use your Android phone as a live view display, as well as a shutter trigger, which could come in handy for folks. The adapter will cost $60 and is only compatible with the D3200 so far, but we expect there to be more cameras supported in the future.
