Previously, Motorola released an update for MOTOACTV that included golf functionality, but it was only available for a limited time. Over the weekend, we received an email from a reader who plugged in his device and was prompted for the update to build number 1.7.12 N8. This is a quick note to all ACTV users who missed the update, that you should go check and see if your’s is also prompted to update.

MOTOACTV Golf Update Live Again, Grab It if You Missed It the First Time is a post from: Droid Life

The Motorola MOTOACTV fitness tracker has been reduced significantly in price over the last week or so. Originally introduced at $249 for the 8GB model, you can grab one today for as little as $140 at some stores, but $149 seems to be the standard price. When purchasing, the MOTOACTV also comes with a watch strap now, something that was an extra $30 at initial launch. If the 8GB model doesn’t sound like it contains enough storage, you can find the 16GB version for as little as $180 at retailers like Walmart.

For those that haven’t followed our coverage of the MOTOACTV, just know that this has quickly become one of the finer fitness products around. This fitness tracker has golf software for scoring rounds, tracks dozens of fitness activities, syncs with a solid web interface, has companion apps that allow you to receive Facebook or Twitter updates, shows you notifications for calls and texts, and even has built-in GPS. This may also sound odd, but Motorola updates this thing like crazy and is always listening to users on how it can be improved. At launch, it may have been overpriced. Now, this almost seems like a steal.

Motorola MOTOACTV Drops Significantly in Price to $149, Includes $30 Watch Strap is a post from: Droid Life

If you own a Motorola MotoActv fitness watch, you should have an update on the way as build 1.7.10. In it, you will find improvements all over the board to things like the golf scorecard when playing back 9s, less force closes, better notifications for unread messages, and fewer battery drains from having WiFi on. This update will work with both 8GB and 16GB devices, including those without the golf update.

It looks like this update will be available any day now. Go plug in your watch and see!

Motorola MotoActv Update 7.10 Available – Improves Notifications and Performance, Fixes Bugs is a post from: Droid Life

A new update has been made available today for owners of the Motorola MotoActv Fitness Watch. The update for those with the golf software is 1.7.2 and 1.7.3 for those without the golf goodness. So what’s new? A bunch of stuff actually, including Facebook and Twitter integration. 

• Golf:  New views and options (tee locations, putt distances, etc.)
• More flexible workout planning
• New heart rate choices for fitness zones
• View Facebook and Twitter posts on the device
• Better views of post-workout maps
• Easier WiFi setup

To get the update, you will have to hook your device up to your PC and then let the magic happen. Definitely interested to see how this new Twitter and Facebook integration works. I guess that easier WiFi setup is going to come in handy.

Owners of the Motorola MotoActv, you have an update available. It’s fairly minor, but we wanted to point out that there are different versions of it depending on your current software status. If you took the golf update before it was pulled in early April, you get build 1.6.12 which includes new golf stuff. If you forgot or didn’t care about the golf software and missed your opportunity to update to it, you get build 1.6.13. The updates are essentially the same, one just has golf features and the other does not. 

Enhancements:

1. Improved calorie burn algorithm during cycling workout with heart rate monitor
2. Added Primary Activity selection during setup so your MOTOACTV is tailored to your primary sport
3. Improved watch performance after display wake up
4. Enhanced the way Album Lists are displayed

Motorola MotoActv Receives Update – New Features Depend on Whether or Not You Loaded the Golf Software is a post from: Droid Life

The “Golf Edition” update for the Motorola MotoActv that we were told would be avaialble during the first week of April is now here. The update itself installs in just a few minutes, bringing your device up to build 6.6 (not the 6.5 that was reported yesterday). Once you have it loaded, you should find “Golf” under your activities list. When chosen for the first time, you will need to download courses for your location (by state), head to a golf course, and let the GPS do the rest of the work.

While in a round, you can swipe left or right to view hazard distances, set the location of your ball, update your scorecard, and more. From a golf GPS perspective, this actually looks pretty impressive. And with the sun out in Portland today, I’m getting the itch to go try this out. While the price may have been questionable upon release of the MotoActv, this golf update (at least at first glance) appears to be nothing by good.

To download, plug your MotoActv unit into your computer and tell it to check for software updates. If you own the 8GB MotoActv, you need to download this before April 16. After that, it will be a paid add-on. 16GB MotoActv owners do not have a time restriction.

MotoActv Golf Update Build 6.6 is Available Now, Quick Hands-on is a post from: Droid Life

Tomorrow, Motorola will release the first update to their MotoActv pairing app for Android smartphones. Currently locked to only a couple of phones, this update will make the app available to all Android phones running 2.1 and higher. Not only that, but they finally added some functionality to it which turns it into more than just a battery draining notification system. In fact, this now sounds a lot like what Nike’s Fuelband app does on iOS and should do when it is released this summer to Android. 

Here is the list:

• Plan workouts on your phone, launch them from your MOTOACTV and see your workout data back on your phone
• Track progress of your personal fitness goals on your phone
• Use your Android smartphone to set up Wi-Fi networks for your MOTOACTV

MotoActv Fitness Tracker Golf Update 6.5

Remember the golf update that Motorola told us would be made available to current MotoActv owners during the first week of April? It should be here right on time. On Friday, Motorola actually posted up the full changelog (here) for the update, but has since pulled it. My guess is that it will be up tomorrow along with this new Android app. One thing to note is that you will only have until April 16 to download it for free. After that, it will be a paid download that we can imagine will not be all that cheap. So if you want golf GPS software on your unit, be sure to stay close, as we will let you know the minute it goes live. Might want to start checking tomorrow afternoon though.

MotoActv Updates on the Way: Syncing App Available to All Android Devices Tomorrow, Golf Software 6.5 to Fitness Units Too is a post from: Droid Life

When Motorola announced a new “Golf Edition” of the MotoActv this morning, my instant reaction was, “Well, what about current owners? Will they see a software update to include similar software?” We reached out to Moto who informed us that there will indeed be a an update to bring the golf software to existing MotoActv owners. It will carry a “beta” tag and will be available some time in early April, close to when the “Golf Edition” is released to the public. So no, you do not need to pawn your current device on Craigslist in order to get the 20,000 courses and virtual scorecard that were introduced today.

Now this is a move that totally makes sense to me. You have a fitness tracker with built-in GPS, why not add some golf capabilities to it? Rather than using a battery draining golf app on your phone for 18 holes or lugging around one of those big ol’ Sky Caddies, wouldn’t a watch replacement fit nicely? I’d say so, and that’s exactly what Motorola has announced today in the MotoActv Golf Edition.

In this new MotoActv release you will have yardage on 20,000 golf courses, giving you distance to the front, back and center of greens. You can keep score right from your wrist and then take your finished rounds online to view them through the MotoActv site. With built-in GPS, your rounds show up virtually so that you can see where each shot was played from. You can also compare your game to the way pros approach particular courses, well, aside from the “muni” that you and Joe Bob play for $9 on Friday’s twilight special.

The Golf Edition will be available for $299 on April 1.

On a related note, I’ve reached out to Moto to figure out the differences between this new version and the current MotoActv. Would certainly be thoughtful of Moto to offer current MotoActv owners a chance to add on this golf software, assuming the internals are all the same.

Update:  Good news current MotoActv owners! Motorola has informed us that a “beta version of the software enabling golf features” will be available to all MotoActv users in early April. Other details will be available as we get closer to that time frame, but this should excite those of you that already own the device.

Motorola says that the update for your MotoActv is ready, but I have been unsuccessful in updating mine thus far. According to their Facebook page, all you need to do is plug it into a computer and tell it to sync and the update should punch you in the face. Afterwards, you will be able to track all sorts of fun new activities and even wake the device by shaking it. Most importantly though, you won’t have to attach it to your computer as often to add something as simple as a WiFi network.

We were supposed to see the biggest MotoActv update of all on this fine Wednesday morning, but instead, Moto has informed us that Friday is actually the day. It’s a shame really, I was looking forward to testing out the new Fencing mode by counting the number of calories I could burn while dodging Tim Cook’s empty threats and jabs at Android during the iPad event. I kid, I kid.

Also in the update, you will see more of these custom activities, a shake to wake option, and the ability to setup a WiFi connection without having to attach the MotoActv to your computer. For owners of this product, you will understand how needed all of these features are.

The folks at Motorola have announced that starting March 7, another update for MOTOACTV will begin rolling out. Included in the update will be the ability to set up WiFi directly to the device, turn on the display with a flick of the wrist, and the opportunity to host your own competitions with other ACTV users on their website. Additionally, Motorola is also adding 40 new activities for you to monitor and track online including yoga, Pilates, and even martial arts. Stay healthy, Moto.

Just finished off a Friday night run, plugged in my MOTOACTV and sure enough, it prompted me to update. It updated to version 4.55.97, but depending on the model you have, you may receive a slightly different build (4.56.97 / 4.57.97 /4.58.97 are the others). All of them should include the exact same enhancements though, including better battery life, a new status bar, and the ability to lock the screen during workouts.

MOTOACTV Receives Update – Includes Better Battery Life, Battery Percentage Status Bar, and Locking Abilities is a post from: Droid Life

The latest in active/exercise tech was introduced today by Nike. The product is called the Nike+ FuelBand and looks similar to those LiveStrong wrist bands that took the world by storm for an extended period of time, only it’s much more advanced. The idea behind it is similar to what you can find in FitBit, except that it introduces a new way to measure your daily activity, NikeFuel. It’s really a glorified marketing term, but the idea is that your Fuel score should “motivate” you to do more throughout the day. Whether you are running, walking, crawling, flipping or waving your warms around, your Fuel score is being calculated. Not only that though, you can also track calories and steps taken which are displayed on the band through an LED light panel.

The product is Android-related in the sense that an app to co-exist with your Fuel score and progress will be available soon. At launch, February 22, there will be an iOS app, however, Nike has already said that an Android version is on the way. The product will retail for $149.

Is that the MotoActv I hear crying in the corner? Actually that’s not completely fair since the FuelBand does not have a built-in MP3 player. Might be time to drop that price a tad though Moto, as Nike is one athletic master you do not want to battle.

Nike Introduces the FuelBand as the Next Fitness Trend, Android Compatibility on the Way is a post from: Droid Life

Other than price, one of the biggest annoyances to Motorola’s MotoACTV sports tracker has been the fact that it is limited to only being able to pair with Motorola Android phones. This limitation left anyone who owns say a Galaxy Nexus, Rezound or other non-Moto phone without the ability to receive calls, texts or calendar notifications during a workout – one of the major selling points to the device. Thankfully, the developer community has our back again and pulled out the permission from the app that was asking to validate with Blur and it now works on all Android phones, accepting calls, texts and even calendar reminders.
