ASUS’ $160 MeMo Pad Finally Hits Retailers, Think Nexus 7 Minus the Good Stuff

If you happen to be in the market for an affordable Android tablet, plus you don’t find yourself worrying about the amount of cores your processor has or what your display’s pixel density is, then maybe check out ASUS’ new 7″ MeMo Pad.

For those familiar, and if you are reading this site I would hope you are very familiar, think of it as a Nexus 7 tablet minus a few of the specs. The MeMo pad rocks a 1GHz single-core VIA WM8950 processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage, a 1-megapixel front-facing shooter and Android 4.1.

This morning, ASUS’s budget-friendly MeMo Pad 7″ is finally official. We have seen plenty of render leaks and spec leaks, but we are sort of surprised that they have gone ahead and launched the device right before MWC. Either way, it’s out now, and the specs have not changed since we talked about them previously.

We scarcely speak of ASUS’s budget-friendly MeMo Pad lineup because frankly, we simply read our comments section. No one seems all that interested. But with these new press renders of the MeMo Pad 10 hitting the web, it sort of has us second guessing our own initial reactions to the lineup. I mean come on, look at that smooth backside.

It was the original ASUS MeMo 7 that ended up becoming Google’s best selling Android tablet to-date, the Nexus 7. After that disappeared we weren’t sure that we would see another tablet from the MeMo line until recently when the 7″ low-end tablet was re-announced. If you were looking to be blown away by specs though, that tablet was not for you. However, a new 10″ MeMo Pad has surfaced and is looking to be better equipped.

Remember the story we posted about ASUS launching a $150 tablet called the MeMo Pad? Well, some guy over in Europe now has one and is giving everyone a quick look at the new tablet. Unsurprisingly, it looks very much like a Nexus 7, but sports a white back like the Google I/O editions that attendees received. That’s a plus.

This evening, ASUS is introducing the MeMo Pad, a lower-end device that is sure to get anyone looking to save some cash on a tablet extremely happy. Priced at just $150 for 8GB, the MeMo Pad doesn’t rank high on the list in terms of specs, but will certainly be able to get through any type of multi-tasking you can throw at it.
