Koush’s Carbon backup application received an update today, the most notable change probably being its name. Carbon is now called Helium, as there was a trademark issue with “Carbon.” Either way, it’s still the same application, just a new name. 

On top of the new name, there have been some improvements made to the app, such as bug fixes, cloud backups are managed separately for each device you use, and WiFi settings can be backed up (root required for that one).

What’s New:

• Carbon has been renamed to “Helium” (trademark issue)
• App icons are now stored in a .nomedia directory as a hidden dot file. Redo your backups to hopefully clear out the gallery spam.
• Fixed a bugs with PC Restore.
• Helium’s Windows Installer now includes the Universal ADB Driver as part of the installation. If you had device detection problems before, this may fix it!
• Cloud backups are now managed separately per device
• Wifi settings can now be backed up (root required)

Last night, Wil Wheaton broadcast to the world through Google+ that he was struggling to fully root his HTC One. He was able to unlock the bootloader (likely through HTCDev), but them found the entire process of putting a recovery or rooting it to be quite difficult. He eventually gave up, leaving for the night after five hours of work with some parting words about how much he loves his “GNEX” and despises the UI of the One. So what happened after he ran off to bed? Koush came to the rescue. 

With the release of Wil Wheaton Recovery, anyone (including Wil) can root the AT&T or T-Mobile versions of the HTC One. All you need to do to get the process going is to flash this new Wil Wheaton recovery.img in fastboot, boot into the new recovery, and then reboot to Android from the new Wil Wheaton Recovery, where it will ask you to root the device. Tap “Yes” when prompted, and you will be rooted.

It doesn’t look like Wil is awake yet, so we’ll try to update this post with his much-anticipated response.

It’s almost the weekend, so let’s get a shiny new ROM flashed for you to play with. Today, CyanogenMod launched the 10.1 M3 builds for an impressive list of phones like the Galaxy S3, Nexus 4, One X, Galaxy Nexus, etc. Naturally, as more builds are uploaded for different devices, you can expect to see this already impressive list grow even larger. 

In terms of what is new, you can expect to see the new Pie Control UI baked in, Koush’s open source Superuser application, and plenty other little goodies.

This morning, Koush launched his all new Superuser application to Google Play. Just last week, Koush detailed why there needed to be another Superuser app, and the reasons listed are pretty good. For starters, the app is completely open source, comes with pin protection, is and always will be free, and comes with proper multi-user support for Android 4.2+ users.

Koushik Dutta, known as the mind behind ROM Manager and other apps such as Carbon Backup and DeskSMS, is at it yet again. Late last night, Koush posted details and a video to his Google+, showing off his newest creation, ClockworkMod Superuser.

The app which will forever be free and open source, is Koush’s definition of how a superuser app should be – secure, open, and work properly (with a pinch of prettiness). It features multiuser support, PIN protection, customizable notifications and a whole lot more.

Koush Releases Open Source ClockworkMod Superuser Beta App is a post from: Droid Life

According to the man himself, Koush just got done implementing the #1 requested feature for Carbon, SMS backup and restore. Hip hip hooray. As a bonus, he states that it won’t simply just replace all of your current messages either, but nicely places them alongside already existing messages. 

The nice part about this is that Carbon actually merges/syncs the messages with the existing messages on your phone. It doesn’t blindly replace everything like a normal app restore would.

Carbon Backup Updated, Now Supports SMS Backup and Restore is a post from: Droid Life

This morning, Koush’s Carbon app is now out of beta and available in Google Play. It seems that testing went very well and everything was ready for the prime time. With Carbon, users root and non-root can backup their apps and app data to several different places for safe keeping, including the cloud. It’s perfect for people like me who are looking for a third party means of transferring data between devices. 

The app is free, but if you want the cloud features and no ads running on your phone, then it will cost your $5 premium license. Not too bad for an app that would get some heavy usage if you intend on using it to its full potential.

Carbon Out of Beta and Now Available Through Google Play is a post from: Droid Life

This morning, Koush released an updated version of Carbon, his backup app that has been making the rounds and receiving a lot of great attention. In this update, he has allowed non-rooted users to get into the game, with the help of a desktop application that is easily installed on your computer. With this app, every Android user (rooted and non-rooted) can backup apps and app data easily and safely. 

Koush mentions that this beta will expire January 30, but he intends to have a version on Google Play before then. There will be a paid version and a free version, so we await that release.

Koush Releases Updated Carbon Beta, Non-Rooted Users Can Now Have Fun is a post from: Droid Life

Koush released a new version of his cloud app syncing app called Carbon, this morning. In the new build, which is still root-only, you can now backup to Dropbox, group apps into batches (and save those same groups for later), “select all” apps, and tell Carbon to backup app data only, rather than the entire .apk.

He says there will be one more beta release that will be the non-root or “rootless” version before going to market.

Carbon Beta 2 Released, Now Supports Dropbox and App Groups is a post from: Droid Life

Just the other day we were talking about backup solutions and how you should always choose one that allows for cloud storage. Today, long-time developer Koush, released a beta of his new app that does exactly as we were describing, only it takes it a step further. He is tentatively calling this app “Carbon,” which we got a chuckle out of, after the name quickly brought back memories of the overhyped Twitter app by a similar title which never made an official debut. 

Koush’s Carbon is a backup solution that allows you to backup your apps and app data to the cloud or to your SD card. It currently supports Google Drive, but he is working to build in Dropbox support as well. But beyond just the backing up portion of the app, the biggest highlight here is the fact that it can sync apps between devices. As you’ll see in his overview video at the source link, the app is running on two devices and acts almost in real-time when he looks from device-to-device to pull apps and data from one to the other. It’s pretty neat, to be honest.

And you can see how the sky can be the limit here. I don’t know if he has plans to, but user settings could potentially be included at some point, more backup services (like Box.net), and potentially even a media syncing feature of some sort. He has only mentioned the Box.net support coming, so the rest is just my mind running in all directions.

The current beta version has been posted at his Google+ page, which we have posted for you below. We should point out that this version requires root, but he’s expecting to remove that requirement once it goes final and official. Get to testing!

Koush Releases Cloud App Syncing and Backup App, Test the Beta Now is a post from: Droid Life

Sometimes, you flash a new ROM and come to find out, it doesn’t have Google Apps coupled with it and ROM Manager was also left out. So, what’s a flasher to do? Thankfully, Koush has fixed this from being an issue down the road.

With the new “Restore ROM Manager” feature, ClockworldMod Recovery checks before reboot whether ROM Manager is installed on your device under system/apps. As long as you have that settings box checked, whether you wipe all of your data or not, ROM Manager will be there to greet you upon reboot. Definitely a saving feature for the habitual ROM flasher.

ROM Manager Updated, “Restore ROM Manager” Feature Could Save You Later is a post from: Droid Life

Last week, Koush talked about a release of ClockworkMod Recovery 6 that would include a handful of new features. Last night, we released the update for the Galaxy Nexus, bringing with it faster backups, a new backup format, fixed restoring of backups greater than 2GB, and a fancy new background. If you want to update to this right away, you can do so through ROM Manager.

Speaking of ROM Manager, he also announced that everyone’s favorite ROM flasher is in need of a makeover. A UI rewrite will arrive “shortly” and will include a paid ROM section, an option to upload your ROM for anyone to use, and the ability to connect your ROM to Recovery Builder. It’s hard to believe that this fantastic app has been around for 2 years already. Bring on the makeover!

ClockworkMod Recovery 6 Released for Galaxy Nexus, ROM Manager Overhaul is on the Way Too is a post from: Droid Life

We wrote up this bit of news on Sunday when Koush first released it, but our inbox has made it clear that many of you unplug from the internet on weekends (how dare you!). So for those with lives, you should know that a beta version of Clockwork Touch Recovery is available for the Galaxy Nexus and a handful of other devices.

If you want to get it for free, you can browse through the “Download Touch Recovery” column at the ClockworkMod site and then flash the .img through fastboot (Instructions). If fastboot is not your friend, you can pay $1.99 through ROM Manager to unlock the touch goodness.

*Note – Through the first couple of releases, some ROMs were struggling to flash properly. Koush appears to be working through many of those issues, so if you run into any, report the errors if you please, and be patient.

The touch-based Clockwork Recovery that was teased late last week is now available in beta form if you would like to test it. I flashed it without any problems, cruised through menus and am now performing my first backup with it. So far, everything seems to work. Scrolling through lists of files can be a little difficult to control at this time, but again, it’s a beta so expect all of the polish to come as you all take the time to test and provide feedback. Otherwise Galaxy Nexus owners, get to it.

Instructions:

*We went with basic commands here. If some of this is foreign to you, I suggest you check out all of our complete instructions in the Galaxy Nexus Guide.

1.  Download the file from above and place it in your SDK Tools or Platform-Tools folder.

*Wherever your adb.exe and fastboot.exe files are located, that’s where you copy the new recovery too.

2.  Open a command prompt from within that folder (hold SHIFT and right click – choose “open command”)
3.  Type the following commands:

adb reboot bootlooader
fastboot flash recovery touch-tuna.img

4.  When that finishes pick up your phone and choose “Recovery mode” using the volume keys.
5.  Your phone should boot into the new recovery.
6.  Enjoy touching!

No, this isn’t the touch-based Clockwork Recovery that was created for the Galaxy Nexus at the beginning of the month. This is a fully touch-enabled version that no longer uses arrows or physical buttons to get the job done. Our man Koush released a teaser on G+ to get some feedback and to show the progress that he has made. You can’t test it yet and he has promised a better UI, so try to be patient.
