Android Distribution Numbers Updated for October – Jelly Bean Closing in on 50% Share

android distribution

Late last night, the Android team updated their dashboards to reflect new platform distribution numbers as we head into October. As has been the trend over the last few months, Jelly Bean continues to expand its reach and is now on 48.6% of Android devices (up slightly from last month’s 45.1%). That doesn’t mean that 50% of the world is on 4.3, but that is a combined number of Android 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3, since they all fall under the Jelly Bean name.

Ice Cream Sandwich now sits at 20.6%, Honeycomb remains alive at 0.1%, Gingerbread somehow still manages to hold 28.5%, and Froyo remains delightfully chilly at 2.2%.

Prediction Time: Tell Us the Name of the “L” Version of Android

ANDROID LOLLIPOP

As of this afternoon, we know that Android 4.4 will arrive before long, under the name Kit Kat. The “K” name pushes Google’s alphabetical and dessert naming scheme forward for Android, even if we were all running under the impression (for months) that it would be Key Lime Pie or KLP. Yes, Google trolled pulled-the-switcheroo on us this time around, so we’d love to get your predictions in even earlier for whatever comes next.

Assuming the alphabetical, dessert scheme continues, we will arrive at “L.” There are a number of obvious options (licorice, lollipop, lemonhead, lemon meringue, etc.) that immediately come to mind, but knowing Google and the Android team, we could see something unique.

In the comments, drop your predictions (as many as you’d like). Assuming someone gets it right, we’ll have it on the books, forever.  (more…)
