After Verizon and HTC decided that they weren’t fans of you unlocking the bootloader on your brand new DROID DNA through HTCDev, something we first reported as being possible, owners of the device waited impatiently for a work-around or fix to the problem to appear. After all, how much fun could a shiny, freshly opened smartphone be without the ability to unlock, root, and get to tinkering? Well, my friends, a method to trick HTCDev’s unlock tool has been worked out and is available for download.

RootzWiki has instructions up, thanks to TeamAndIRC’s Justin Case, so I’ve linked to them below, along with a video. The process doesn’t seem difficult. My understanding is that it basically involves changing your CID so that HTCDev thinks you are using a different device. Once you have flashed all of the CID-changing files, you still use HTCDev to unlock the bootloader. Once finished, you then go about your normal business. The process is semi-risky though. There also may not be a way to re-lock your device, meaning your warranty is shot. Be careful, proceed with caution, and enjoy.

Well, that’s good news, right? The HTC DROID DNA bootloader can be unlocked through HTCDev, opening it up (for the most part) to a world that many of Verizon’s phones cannot enter. The phone is left with S-ON afterwards, but to my knowledge most HTC phones are after using this tool. The device pictured is more than likely a retail unit. Unless something changes or a software update blocks HTCDev from working, I’d say we are in luck.

In theory, with the phone having S-ON, ROMs can still be flashed, you just have to flash a boot.img file before doing the heavy lifting. For example, my One X is unlocked via HTCDev and has S-ON, yet I can flash all sorts of goodies. (Updated) In order to flash kernels you will need to do it through fastboot, but in this day, that’s not nearly as big of a deal as it once was.

In order to unlock, we’ve been told that all you need to do is use HTCDev’s unlock instructions after choosing the “All other supported models” option from the device selection pulldown.

Assuming (and hoping) this carries through to launch, does this change your opinion of the DNA?

Cheers DNA!

While I haven’t followed the story of AT&T’s HTC One X all that closely, I was under the impression that it had yet to be rooted on software version 2.20. As of today, that is no longer the case, thanks again to @djrbliss. He has created a root tool that will give you temporary root, which then allows you to unlock the bootloader of your device via HTCDev, and potentially flash a custom recovery followed by a rooted ROM to keep root. (Hopefully that made some sort of sense).

The instructions are after the break, but I highly recommend that you hit up the XDA thread at the bottom for full support. Congrats AT&T One X owners, and welcome to the party.

On a related note, isn’t there an $823 bounty for rooting this phone?

Instructions

Download the exploit from: http://vulnfactory.org/public/X_Factor_Windows.zip

Extract the entire zip file.

Connect your device via USB, ensure you have the latest HTC USB drivers installed, and ensure USB debugging mode is enabled.

Double-click “run.bat”.

Follow the instructions printed by the exploit. You will need to authorize two backup restorations during the exploit’s execution.

If the exploit is successful, it will print “[+] Set CID!”. If it does not print this, the exploit has failed, so please do not continue.

The exploit will automatically reboot into bootloader mode. Press enter after bootloader mode is finished booting, and the exploit will print your CID. If the exploit was successful, it should return “11111111″ as your CID.

If your CID was successfully set, press enter to generate an unlock token.

Visit htcdev.com, navigate to the “Bootloader unlock” section, choose “All other supported models” from the drop-down menu, and provide the unlock token when asked.

After unlocking the bootloader, you can flash a custom recovery partition via fastboot, boot into recovery mode, and use a recovery ADB shell or install from an update.zip to install Superuser and su (I do not provide support for custom recoveries, but this is a straightforward process that other people can help with).

If you were considering the HTC One X that is headed to AT&T, not only for its power, but also because of HTC’s commitment to unlocking bootloaders, you may want to look elsewhere. Early adopters of the device noticed a constant error when trying to unlock it through HTCDev’s bootloader tool, prompting the media to ping HTC for a comment on the matter. What did they have to say? Here you go:

HTC is committed to listening to users and delivering customer satisfaction. Since announcing our commitment to unlockable bootloaders, HTC has worked to enable our customers to unlock the bootloader on more than 45 devices over the past six months. In some cases, however, restrictions prevent certain devices from participating in our bootloader unlocking program. Rest assured, HTC is committed to assisting developers in unlocking bootloaders for HTC devices and we’ll continue to unlock additional devices in the future.

“Restrictions” or better yet, a PR person’s way of saying, “the carrier” is the reason for this phone to remain locked. This is a sad turn of events in HTC’s journey to appease the developer community. Last May, HTC’s CEO Peter Chou announced via Facebook that after an overwhelming amount of customer feedback that they “will no longer be locking the bootloaders” on their devices. He didn’t say “where carriers permit it” or anything of that nature, so this move is a bit shocking. We watched HTC provide unlocking tools for all of their Verizon devices, leading us to believe that the stand they had taken was going to make it.

Only one way to tell if the dark days are on the verge of returning, and that’s to see the status of the Incredible 4G LTE when it gets released in the next couple of weeks.

HTC, after announcing that all of their phones released after September of this year would have unlockable bootloaders, has updated their dev site to reflect that statement. Oh but wait, they went even deeper than that and even included the Thunderbolt and Incredible 2, two devices released long before September. Talk about making a statement to both the developer crowd and other manufacturers in the game.

We were led to believe that this was all up to the carriers, but HTC seems to have either found a way around that, doesn’t care what the carrier’s think, or produced a carrier accepted bootloader unlocking tool that everyone is willing to accept. No matter what, we are loving it.

I think all that’s left to be said now is, ”Doesn’t Motorola owe us an explanation?” A solution? Something?

And go get yourself unlocked if you haven’t already at HTCDev.com.

Cheers to everyone who sent this in!

Ater finding out that the bootloader of the HTC Rezound could be unlocked using HTCDev’s bootloader unlock tool, our initial reaction was to think that this was a mistake and that it would be fixed shortly. Boy was that reaction wrong, and in a good way. HTC has updated their developer site with the following comment:

All HTC Android devices launched after September 2011 are unlockable. The website will be updated accordingly to reflect this in the coming weeks. We continue to work on models launched prior to September 2011, please check back often for the status of older devices.

So not only was it not a mistake for the Rezound to be unlockable, but going forward, every single HTC device will join the party. That’s a big deal, folks. If only we knew what was on the horizon as far as HTC devices go on Verizon. Well, we sort of have an idea: the Fireball.

But wait, didn’t Motorola blame Verizon for forcing them into locking bootloaders on the RAZR and every other device from them over the last year? Indeed they did. I wonder if we can talk HTC into teaching Motorola how to grow a pair?

Via: HTCDev

Users can now use the HTC site to unlock their HTC EVO 3D. Usually you would not hear us say this but, “This isn’t fair!” Motorola needs to be looking at this and start taking some serious notes. Looks like we were right about our previous assumption that the EVO 3D would be next, followed by T-Mobiles U.S. Sensation 4G. Lucky, punks.

At the first sign of a Verizon HTC device being unlocked, you will all be the first to know, and we will have a wonderful celebration. Anybody here own an EVO 3D? Time to unlock the beast?

Looks like HTC has become everyone’s favorite manufacturer starting today. They have begun the unlocking process for their devices, beginning with the European Sensation. Looking at their site, it looks as though we can maybe expect the HTC Evo 3D on Sprint next, followed by the Sensation 4G for T-Mobile? No Verizon love yet? Guess we will have to show a bit more patience.

HTC is being extremely clear in their disclaimers about warranty issues, and they want you to be safe:

You are about to start the process of unlocking your device. Unlocking your device allows you to install custom Operating Systems (“OS”) onto your device. Custom OS’s are not tested as thoroughly as your original OS, and unlocking your device may void all or parts of your warranty. HTC disclaims any and all liability for proper functioning of your device after the bootloader has been unlocked and for data lost in the unlocking process. To prevent unauthorized access to your data, unlocking the bootloader will delete all personal data from your device including applications, text messages and personalized settings.

This is the type of disclaimer that everyone who ever rooted their phone is aware of. No surprises here right? We are still on the lookout if unlocking your bootloader will put you on a list of “non-fixable” devices that Verizon might have. Hopefully, we are all just a wee bit paranoid and HTC is not ratting us out to Big Red. Why would they do that?

Once you agree to these warnings and continue on, you must then check two boxes.

I acknowledge that use of the unlock bootloader may void all or parts of my warranty device and my device may not function as intended by HTC.

I acknowledge that, if my device requires repairs, HTC may charge for additional costs due to the unlocked bootloader.

If you are okay with all this, then you simply just follow some instructions given, and you are all done. Good to go. Once the unlocking tool is available for Big Red devices, who is going to be first to use the procedure? I see Kellex raising his hand.

After exploring the HTCDev site, location of the almighty unlocking of the HTC bootloaders taking place later this year, a reader over at Android Central showed everyone a few things of interest. Included within the goodies are some screen shots of a Honeycomb tablet, running a version of Sense. It hasn’t been said whether this is just a developer version yet, or if this is exactly what we saw teased to be released on the HTC Puccini.

Looks like you can possibly count on there to be HTC Scribe on HTC’s first rendition of a Honeycomb tablet. Everyone open to the idea of bringing HTC’s Sense onto their tablets? Can Sense or any other OEM skin outdo what Honeycomb already does? TouchWiz was just recently pumped out the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and so far there are mixed reactions. Feel free to let us know what you think down below.
