Download: HTC IME Keyboard for DROID X

Been wondering when someone would grab the HTC IME keyboard from the EVO 4G and port it to the Droid X?  The posse at XDA are already on it.  As you can see from the screenie above, landscape doesn’t match up perfectly, but everything works including the speech-to-text.  Portrait mode also looks like perfection.

Download:  EvoKeyboard.apk

Instructions…

1.  Download the EvoKeyboard.apk to your Droid X.
2.  Once it finishes, tap on it and “Install.”
3.  When it finishes, return to a home screen and go to Menu>Settings>Language & Keyboard.
4.  Check the box for “Touch Input.”
5.  Back out and long press on a text box.  Choose “Input method” and “Touch Input.”
6.  Done!

As always, let us know if you run into any issues with it.

Again, our readers come through with some amazing stuff.  This time, reader Wes, took over the custom HTC_IME keyboard game after I posted the walk through on how to make your own.  He tossed together 11 different keyboards ranging from Batman to Hello Kitty and wanted to make sure they were made available to Droid Life readers.  Gotta love that right?  He’s also offered up his services in case any of you have a special request.  That’s right, you shoot him an email and he’ll create one for you.

So check out his first 11 and if you don’t see one you like, shoot him an email via the attached contact form!

Create Your Own Custom HTC_IME Keyboard

Our favorite non-Swype style keyboard just keeps getting better.  As of today, you can work through a step-by-step process and actually create your own customized HTC_IME keyboard.  We are now on version 24 and one of the developers behind this ported version has released his beta customization method.  Check it out…

*This is for non-rooted and rooted users. Everyone!*

1.  Visit this site and register for an account.
2.  Choose “Create a custom keyboard skin from scratch.”
3.  Choose your keyboard version.  (v24 is the newest.)
4.  Follow the next few steps, choosing your color scheme.
5.  Click “Generate Keyboard.”
6.  Download your keyboard and install it.  (Installation instructions here.)

Update: It appears that you do need the Clicker file for calibration.  Download here.

With this new v24, it appears that the Clicker.apk for calibration is no longer needed and the settings for the keyboard have become much more polished.  There are even a few new features which you’ll enjoy.

If you want the keyboard from above that I’ve created, you can download it here.  (alt link)

Let me know if you have any issues.

htc ime keyboard ported to droid

the htc ime keyboard has been ported to the motorola droid for those of you looking for another keyboard option.  i’ve only been using it for about 10 minutes so i can necessarily give you a full review of my thoughts on it, but first impressions are very good.  voice-to-text is included and it even gives you a little vibration or confirmation while pressing keys.  the one drawback however is that this keyboard does not work in landscape mode.  if you are a landscape touchscreen typer, then you’ll be out of luck.  now, if you are like me and always pop the keyboard open for landscape, you are good!

update 2/26 3:07pm:  i just took her out for a spin and i’ve got to say that the voice-to-text works very well.  in fact, i’m impressed with how nicely it works.  typing on this keyboard is also very smooth and after whipping out an entire email with it, i doubt i’ll be going back to the stock droid keyboard any time soon.  there are still rumors of bugs and i’d love to hear them as you run across any.  enjoy!

2 apk’s are needed:  htc_ime.apk for the keyboard and clicker.apk for the settings.  install both.
