Release: HelixLauncher 1.4 Beta

The latest version of our favorite HelixLauncher hit beta yesterday and has some nice new features which only add to the already screaming fast performance.  The HelixLauncher1.4 Beta is available to users who have donated to the project and I highly advise you go check this out.

New features:

  • Panel Jump – Allows you to jump from first to last homescreen with a simple flick.
  • LWP Panning – Allows you to lockdown live wallpapers to increase performance.
  • Show FPS – Adds a frames per second counter to the top corner of your home screen.

And to those of you haven’t donated, this is a great time to support a fantastic developer who has used this blog in the past for ideas and features.

Head over to the HelixProject and either login or donate to gain access to the file.

Fantastic work again Faruq.

Download: Black Themed HelixLauncher

If you are not rooted and still interested in installing a black themed HelixLauncher similar to the one we posted with our white Droid Life live wallpaper, you are in luck.  One of the fantastic themers in the Droid game, Bgill55, has released an apk that works for everyone.  Yes, non-roots are covered!  While I’m still working on releasing an apk of our our white and black live wallpapers, at least you can go black with the launcher, right?

Release: Droid Life White Live Wallpaper

For about a month now, I’ve been asking people to make a black HelixLauncher 1 to go over the top of of a white Neural Network live wallpaper and no one seemed interested in the task.  So instead of waiting any longer, it was time to just dig right in and make it happen.  And here we go!  The first ever Droid Life White Live Wallpaper is ready for your use! Unfortunately though, this is only for rooted users at this time.  (The goal is to work with someone with some real app knowledge and get this bad boy released to everyone…maybe next week.)

Now hang with me on these instructions as they look quite lengthy, but really aren’t that bad.

Live Wallpaper Installation…

*Note 1* – This process is performed using Root Explorer.  Download it from the market.

*Note 2* – This process will replace the LiveWallpapers.apk in your /system/app/ folder.  It is a good idea to move the stock one to another folder for safe keeping.

1.  You have to be rooted.  (Instructions for rooting here.)
2.  Download this file to your SD card:  LiveWallpapers.apk
3.  Open Root Explorer and find the LiveWallpapers.apk you just downloaded.
4.  Long press on the file and select “move.”
5.  Navigate to /system/app/ and press the Mount R/W button at the top.
6.  Then press “paste” in the bottom left corner.
7.  If it asks you to overwrite a previous LiveWallpapers.apk, allow it to.
8.  Long press on your pasted LiveWallpapers.apk and select “Permissions.”
9.  Next to User, check the boxes for “Read” and “Write” and then “OK.”
10.  Hit the Mount R/O button at the top and back out of Root Explorer.
11.  Reboot your phone.
12.  Open up your live wallpaper settings and select the “Nexus” live wallpaper.
13.  Done!

HelixLauncher1 Black Installation…

*Note 1* – Before doing this, you need to copy your HelixLauncher apk to the /system/app/ folder.  You can find it using Root Explorer in /data/app/.

1.  You have to be rooted.  (Instructions for rooting here.)
2.  Download and install MetaMorph from the market.
3.  Download this file to your SD card:
4.  Move the file into your “AndroidThemes” folder.
5.  Open MetaMorph.
6.  Click “Unzip/Extract new theme” and choose the file.
7.  Select the “HeilxModBlack.xml” file.
8.  Choose the subtheme for whichever HelixLauncher you are using.
9.  Select “Apply it!”, reboot and you are done!

And like I said previously, the goal is to make this an installable apk for everyone to use.  Hang in there non-roots!

Side note:  Any bets on how long it takes before someone chimes in with a “white will kill your battery faster!” comment?

Download: HelixLauncher 2 V.07

Your favorite launcher which includes 4 persistent apps plus the 3D app drawer is back and available in the market for your Motorola Droid!  (I told you this was going to be a great week didn’t I?)  Yep, the HelixLauncher 2 is back and fully working on the Droid.

As you’ll notice from the screenies I just capped, the launcher button has in fact been moved back to the middle.  And why is that?  Because Droid Life readers said that’s where they wanted it!  You’ll also notice that you can remove the glass dock from the app bar which was a nice touch from Faruq.

Enjoy!  (And remember to donate if you haven’t already.)

*Note 1* – This app is for everyone!  Rooted and non-rooted users.

*Note 2* – If for some reason you are seeing force closes, try removing widgets from other launchers.

Monday Poll: HelixLauncher2 App Drawer Button Placement?

The developer behind the HelixLauncher and HelixLauncher 2 has asked for Droid Life readers’ input as to the overall look of the latest installment which will work on the stock 2.1 Droid.  After showing off the beta version of Helix 2 over the weekend, we saw some mixed reviews on the new placement of the app drawer button.

So here you go DL readers, your input matters on the development of one of the best apps on the market.  Should the app drawer button be in the new spot on the right or return to its original middle position?

Pretty cool that the developer would come to us for input right?  Feel free to back your answer in the comments!

Weekend Recap: NFL Mobile Leaked and the New HelixLauncher2

A recap from a weekend full of Droid Life goodness that you may have missed while spending too many hours away from your computer. We wouldn’t want you missing out on the latest rumors, news, hacks, apps or ROMs now would we? Catch up!

Another big week is upon us!  Maybe we’ll have an official 2.1 root?  What about a TAT Home?  Flash 10.1 release news?  We’ll just have to see!

Video: New HelixLauncher 2 in Action

For those of you holding off on purchasing the ClockworkMod Launcher in hopes of a stock 2.1 version of the HelixLauncher2, your wait is almost over.  We just received a beta version of the HelixLauncher2 which works on the 2.1 Update 1 ESE81 build for your Motorola Droid.  They’ve changed it up slightly and I’ve got to say that this thing looks amazing.  (Ignore my custom ROM and just focus on the launcher.)

Video action…

And it looks now like this version has hit public beta so all of you stock 2.1 users can test it!  And just a reminder that you should all try to donate to the Helix cause to keep fantastic apps like this growing.

*Note 1* – THIS IS NOT ON THE MARKET. DO NOT DOWNLOAD HELIX 2 FROM THE MARKET.  You will immediately go into a force close loop with that version.

*Note 2* – When you first install, I would recommend NOT selecting as your default on the first try.  If you run into a force close loop, it can be a huge pain in the rear to get out of with a 3rd party app like this.

*Note 3* – The link above which says “donate” will get you to the download page.  But please, donate the $5 first.
