The Casio G’z0ne Commando rugged line of smartphones has been enough of an underground success that Verizon is on the verge of carrying its newest family member, the G’z0ne Commando 811. Fitted with 4G LTE, dual-cameras, microSD card slot, and a removable battery, this looks every bit as rugged as its older brother. The Commando 811, which stopped off at the FCC, is dust, water, and shock resistant, making it the ultimate outdoors and action sports smartphone – at least that’s how it’ll be sold.

You can see from the photos of it, that it carries a similar shape to the DROID Charge, but turns rugged with all sorts of metal and protective casings. If anything, it’s an evolution on the original Commando phone that Verizon carried. We aren’t sure what the exact specs are, though we’d assume they won’t be high-end. The point of this phone is make it impossible to kill no matter what you are doing with it, not necessarily outperform others in benchmarks.

According to the user guide left at the FCC, it’ll also come stocked full of outdoorsy apps like a thermometer, adventure training, compass, stargazer, and sun/moon calendar.

Last, check out the extended 2920mAh battery? The tank has returned.

Casio G-zOne Commando device owners, be on the lookout. Verizon is pushing an update to your ultra-durable tank phone. The update includes some bug fixes for the push-to-talk feature of the device, the Mobile IM application has been completely removed (hooray for less bloat), and the Desk Cradle application has been updated for bug fixes as well.

Sure, it may not be an Ice Cream Sandwich update, but at least you can rest assured that if you drop this device, it will never die.

For a semi-random and outdoors-inspired Android phone made by Casio, you have to be thrilled with the amount of updates it has received (this would be the 4th). While it will never have the specs or name recognition to keep up with the big wigs, the G’z0ne Commando is updated with the best of them.

This morning, a new update as build C771M110 has been approved by Verizon and we would assume will start to rollout within the next week or so. Included in the update you will find better push-to-talk functionality, GPS enhancements, email improvements, bloatware updates and more. And I know I say this every time this phone is the topic at hand, but doesn’t this phone just make you want to go out and get dirty?

The update will be 28MB in size. More info.

Talk about a day of Verizon updates, right? First we received word from a number of readers that both RAZRs and the XOOM LTE were seeing new builds. Then we noticed that the XYBOARD tablets were also scheduled to receive their first updates within the next couple of days. And now another reader awoke to a nice Casio G’z0ne Commando update that gives him push-to-talk abilities.

He said that the update only bumped him to Android 2.3.3, but you can tell that Verizon slipped in enough bug fixes to make this pretty significant. And the fact that they added push-to-talk after the phone has been on the market for so long is actually very cool. Who knew you could add such a service so far down the road. Why they didn’t release the phone with push-to-talk from the beginning is beyond me – seems like it would have been another selling point.

The update is 35.9MB in size.

More info.

Cheers Wade!

Oh my. We thought the Casio G’z0ne was a beast of a phone, and then someone sent us the official G-Shock device that was apparently shown at CES a couple of weeks ago. It clearly runs Android, is reportedly able to hang under water up to 10 meters, can withstand a 10 foot drop, and can hold up a full ton of weight. It might be the ugliest thing on the planet, but you can’t tell me that you don’t want one to go trudge around in the woods with one, acting like a real man.

Every time I type the words “Casio g’z0ne Commando” I feel like throwing on some wet gear, boots, CamelBak, and crushing the wilderness. It just looks like some kind of a “man” phone. Funny thing is, our reader who tipped us to the update said that “his wife’s” phone is the one that received it.

So what’s included? A security patch, better proximity sensor interaction, native email app fixes, Netflix compatibility added, and 3D city downloads through VZ Navigator.

More info.

Cheers Jerry!

The rugged Casio G’z0ne Commando is scheduled to receive its Gingerbread (Android 2.3) update in the very near future. A friend just sent over this support document that details the upgrade before it goes live on Verizon’s site. For the most part, the update looks like a bug fixer, but we know that 2.3 will make it buttery smooth just as it did the Thunderbolt.

For those of you running wild in the woods with a Commando by your side, be sure to get to an area that has service soon so that your phone can get in on the GB party.

Cheers ___!
