Since Google I/O, we haven’t heard much about Google Glass, the eyewear computing project that Google co-founder Sergey Brin is heading. The most recent sighting was at New York Fashion Week, but no new details of availability or functionality came out of it. We did learn a couple of new things about the future of Glass today, thanks to a sit down between Brin and the Wall Street Journal.

During the interview, Sergey let the interviewer wear Google Glass and activate it by saying “OK Glass,” which popped up a menu that would all you to take a picture, record a video, place a phone call, send a message, or use Google Maps. According to this piece, Google Maps and phone calls/messages are only in a prototype stage and not yet working on most models. That’s a bit unfortunate, as it still seems like pictures are the only thing Google Glass is capable of doing to date.

If pictures are your thing though, you can take one by saying “Take a picture” or have it take one every 10 seconds with a time lapse feature. There is also some sort of 360-degree panoramic video experience that shows up in the video below. There isn’t a mention of the app or how they got there, but we are certainly interested.

Still interested in Google Glass?

We have been following Project Glass as closely as we can after the Google X team introduced to the world back in early April. Since that first video of what it could look like surfaced, we have seen actual prototypes in the wild on some of our favorite tech characters. This week though, we received the most up-close and personal look yet, thanks to a photo walk that a group of Googlers went on. Rather than use cameras the entire time, each member of the posse was given a pair of Google Glasses to wear.

As you can see from the pictures below, the prototypes are now coming in more than just that original black pair that we have seen a number of times. The photo walkers had blue and orange sets as well. Aside from colors, we have some close-ups of the mini screen which you can definitely spot things happening on as people peer into them. It’s tough to make out what is there, but in multiple shots, we have screen action.

Aside from that we have the picture directly below that shows them off-head, in all their glory. I see a microUSB port, a massive housing at the back-end for what must be the battery, and the fact that they are “Not FCC Approved.” The last thing you’ll notice in most of the shots is the dedicated camera button on the top of the glasses that everyone seems to be pushing. After all, this was a photo walk.

According to a new detailed report from Patent Bolt, Google has recently been hard at work coming up with ways to revolutionize the future of mobile technology. Google’s vision of the mobile future could possibly sit with Project Glass, and they are coming up with even more ways to make it an out of this world experience. The newest design details depict a Ring, which serves as a marker for the Google Glasses. With the glasses and ring, Google describes the user controlling actions with a complete library of gestures and movements.

Off the top of our heads, we can think of a few fun actions we could perform with tech like this. You could swipe your hand from left to right and music starts playing or say you’re looking at a document – you could swipe up and it will upload the file to your Drive account. Maybe you could even write on top of the document with your finger, like a sketch application. The uses could be really interesting, but for now, this is still in the conceptual stage. A guy can dream though, right?

According to CNET, who had a recent meeting with Google+ chief Vic Gundotra, the interface that ships with Google Glasses may not be exactly what people would expect after watching their promo videos. In a comment from a Google spokesperson, they mentioned that it is still too early to know exactly what to expect:

It’s still too early to know what the functions and UI will be, it’s the simple interactions that are making people the most excited.

We can take this as Project Glass still has a long ways to go and that most likely, Google I/O attendees shouldn’t expect to have a pair of Glasses in their goodie bags. Below we have the video they are referencing if you haven’t seen it.

Google’s Project Glass or as we like to call them, Google Glasses, are one of the more interesting tech topics to follow in 2012. First debuting in a “here is what they could do” video, we have already seen real versions in the wild on the likes of Sergey Brin.

This week, this whole Project Glass situation just jumped another notch or two on the Cool Meter. Sebastian Thrun, one of the Project Glass gurus, stopped by to chat with Charlie Rose while wearing a pair of these glasses. The interview was posted publicly yesterday, but from what we can tell, was actually conducted last week. Within the first few minutes of the conversation and while discussing some of the project’s features, Thrun appears to snap a picture of Rose and then share it to Google+ without doing anything more than a simple head nod. Obviously you can’t see the picture being taken or the UI for sharing since it is only viewable through his glasses, but what we do know is that Thrun posted the picture you are seeing above, to his G+.

The video of this goodness is available at the source link below. We highly recommend you check out it and then discuss.

How close are we to Project Glass becoming a reality?

The Project Glass team unveiled their “Google Glasses” a week ago and the internet couldn’t stop talking about them. The main reason for this early reveal, was to gain feedback from all of us. Were we interested? How should the product work? Does it look OK? And so on. Well, one of the questions that came in actually saw a response from the Glass team, having to do with potential users who wear prescription glasses. Would there be a version that would work for someone that wears glasses on a daily basis? There isn’t necessarily a “yes” or “no” answer as Project Glass is still in development, but their team was kind enough to do a mockup. The goal is to make the product usable for everyone, so that would include those of us that are blind.

After a week of Project Glass in the wild, are you still interested?

Sergey Brin, Google co-founder, sported a working prototype to a blindness foundation event, where his wife was receiving an award. Blogger Robert Scoble noticed them immediately when Brin walked in the door and tried to find out as much info on the hottest topic of the week as possible. He saw a blue light flash at one point in the lens, said they looked incredibly light, and definitely real.

HTC just got done unveiling the HTC EVO 4G LTE, which is a nice phone and all, but isn’t the story of the day clearly the Google[x] project known as “Project Glass?” We are talking glasses that can do everything your smartphone does, but right in front of you eyes. Full voice integration, a camera for snapping life, video chatting, social check-ins, responding to texts, and more are all featured in their video preview of what the technology “could” look like. They even mocked up some renders of the glasses themselves for all of us to geek out on.

But really though, are you interested? If Google released these for X-mas, would you buy it? Is this too Minority Report? Or is that exactly what makes it so awesome to imagine?

Recent reports from various sources are stating that Google has plans to release specially designed glasses for consumers by the end of this year. Shown above is a pair of Oakley Thumps with the Google logo crudely shopped onto them. Minus the logo, sources close to the project have stated the glasses could look like Thumps but of course, will have a small screen built into the lenses for viewing by the wearer.

The glasses would be based on Android and even have 3G/4G data connections, plus GPS capabilities. If that isn’t enough, there are also indications that the glasses will come with a low resolution camera, for real-time layering of information on locations and other various things such as navigation. The most impressive part so far is what the price may be for technology like this. Sources state that they should cost no more than a regular smartphone. So we may be looking at about $300-$600 for a pair of these Terminator-like pieces of hardware.

Is this the next big thing, or is this just in gimmick phase? Would you be seen wearing these things and walking down the street? So far, I can only picture Eric Schmidt wearing these around town and thinking he looks awesome.
