Finally: Verizon Readying FRG22D Froyo Update, Flash 10.1 Included

by: | posted 08.23.10 | News

A 1.6MB OTA update which will take your Motorola Droid to version FRG22D Froyo, allow for Flash 10.1 to be downloaded from the market, and include some additional security patches will be sent to your phone…well…soon.  No date yet, but the Verizon Droid Support page is live with the document above.

Wonder if it had anything to do with this post of official Flash from us just a couple of hours ago?  And while this is only a variation of FRG22 like we were on to a few weeks back, we were aware that this was coming.

Wonder what those security patches are for?  Stay tuned while we dig for dates!

Cheers Luda!

Download: Official Flash 10.1 (V10.1.92.8) for Any Android 2.2 Phone

by: | posted 08.23.10 | Apps, News

We just posted up a way for you to find the official Flash 10.1 in the market and in the comments, one of our amazing readers happened to post up the .apk file which doesn’t even require root in order to install.  In fact, all you need is to be on a phone running Android 2.2 and you can run it.  No root required people.  Enjoy your Flash.

Download: com.adobe.flashplayer-1.apk

And so you know, I tested this on my 2.2 Droid X and stock non-rooted 2.2 Droid 1.

Cheers Adam!

Want Official Flash 10.1 on your DROID? Install New CyanogenMod 6.0 RC3

by: | posted 08.23.10 | DROID, News, Root

If the leaked beta versions of Flash 10.1 for your Droid aren’t cutting it these days, especially with the official version launching on the market for the Nexus One last week, then we have a solution for you.  Root your Droid and install the latest CyanogenMod 6.0.0 RC3 build through ROM Manager and it should appear for you in the market as you can see from the screenies above.

According to Verizon, we should have seen Flash released for the D1 on the 18th, but that date has now come and gone with no word.  We had sort of hoped to see Flash with FRG22 Froyo, yet that build seems to have disappeared as rumors of a new 2.2 for the D1 have emerged.  It’s a huge guessing game at this point.

Like I said, grab it now using the new CM6.

*Note* – If you are on a 2.2 ROM and can’t see Flash in the market, try going into Settings>Applications>Market and clearing data/cache and then force stopping it.  It may appear afterwards.

Any luck?  This build seems to run much better than those leaked builds which were not meant for the D1 anyway.

Cheers Shane!

SetCPU and Android 2.2 for DROID Allows for Simple Overclocking

by: | posted 08.23.10 | DROID, Root

Ever since the original Droid was rooted back in the 2.0.1 days, we’ve had super user access which allows us to do whatever we want to the device.  And one of those things that many of us wished to do from the beginning was overclock it from the 550MHz that Moto stuck us with in hopes of gaining some much needed boosts in performance.  In both Android 2.0.1 and 2.1, simply rooting your device was not enough, you also needed to flash a custom kernel which would allow for overclocking and was a step that many of you were uncomfortable with or even struggled to grasp an understanding of.  Well guess what?  Android 2.2 is sooooo much different thanks to SetCPU.

All you need to do now is root that Droid 1 of yours using Universal Androot, download SetCPU from the Market and overclock to a number of speeds.  No more custom kernels people.  While you won’t see those 1.0GHz monster numbers since the stock kernel can’t crank that high, you will still find 600, 700 and 800MHz speeds which should do you just fine.

So for those of you wanting more power from your original Droid, but aren’t willing to dig deep into the ROM and kernel world, this is your safest bet.

Cheers Glenn!

Download: DROID X Android 2.2 Lock Screen

by: | posted 08.23.10 | DROIDX, News, Root

If you were unable to grab Android 2.2 for the Droid X before Motorola starting harassing websites, then you have missed out on the new lock screen that comes with it (pictured above).  While this isn’t a big change, it does come off as slightly more appealing than the original grey version and can be pushed to your 2.1 DX now if you’d like.

*Note 1* – This is for ROOTED 2.1 Droid X owners only.

*Note 2* – This will mess with your framework-res file which can be dangerous and possibly leave you at a standing M logo on reboot.  You may need to flash an SBF file to recover should something happen.

*Note 3* – Since you have to be rooted, downloading Koush’s Bootstrap and flashing Clockwork Recovery with a backup before doing this is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Download:  framework-res.apk

Instructions:

**Phone must be rooted and only for Droid X on 2.1

0. Put this .apk file on the root of your sd card.
1. Point your command prompt to where your adb is located. Usually where you installed the sdk.
2. Launch a shell on your device. Command: “adb shell” (without quotes)
3. Access superuser permissions. Command: “su” (without quotes)
4. Mount the system as writable. Command: “mount -o remount,rw -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system” (without quotes)
5. Copy over the .apk to the systems framework. Command: “cp /sdcard/framework-res.apk /system/framework” (without quotes)
6. Mount the system as read-only. Command: “mount -o remount,ro -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system” (without quotes)
7. Reboot the system. Command: “reboot”
8. Enjoy!

Let us know if you run into any issues!

Motorola Decides to Give Froyo to the Milestone, DROID X Still “Late Summer”

by: | posted 08.23.10 | News

If the locked bootloader on the Motorola Milestone wasn’t enough, the news a month or so ago that Android 2.2 for the Euro-Droid was still under consideration just about started a war.  But guess what cousins of the Droid world?  Moto has decided to give it to you!  Well, to the European version anyway and some time in Q4.  Yay!

Still no firm date for the Droid X, but we’re thinking it could be any time now that a version of Froyo has already leaked for it.  We’ve even had a couple of sources confirm that the leak was the real deal, hence the reason for Motorola to send out C&D letters to have it removed.  And isn’t it late summer?  Or does “late summer” mean August 31st?

More timeline dates here.

Cheers Eric!

DROID X Running Froyo Quadrant Benchmark

by: | posted 08.20.10 | News

I know we just got done talking about Quadrant and it’s benchmarks which can be tricked pretty easily, but we couldn’t help but show you one on the Droid X running Android 2.2.  After warming up for a good hour with Froyo on it, the DX blasted away all other phones.  The Linpack scores on the other hand are not something to brag home about.

For those with a DX that has been newly updated to Froyo, post your benchmarks in the comments!
