How to: Return DROID X Back to Android 2.1

by: | posted 09.21.10 | DROIDX, Root, Tips

For those not wanting to remain rooted, you are probably looking for a way to return from the leaked Android 2.2 update for the Droid X back  to stock 2.1 so that you can receive the update which we are expecting some time this week.  I’ll just say up front that you will lose root access by doing this and there is a chance that rooting official 2.2 may be difficult, so think this over carefully.  Still ready to go?

Step-by-step guide after the break!

DROID X Android 2.2 Update is Ready, According to Verizon

by: | posted 09.21.10 | News

The Verizon support page for the Droid X has now been updated to show that Android 2.2 is finally ready for launch.  Wait, didn’t we just say yesterday that it would be coming on Wednesday?  Yes, yes we did.  I’d say right now that 9/22 looks pretty likely at this point.

Rumor: DROID X Android 2.2 Update Launching 9/22?

by: | posted 09.20.10 | News

Another Droid X 2.2 rumor!  The latest comes from level 2 Motorola support which normally would mean absolutely nothing, but when these service reps drop a few extra details in their conversations, sometimes they are worth at least a little mention.  Here is what we’ve got…

We know that Verizon and Motorola have stood by a “late summer” release timeline which if we’re getting really technical, would mean they have 2-3 days left to drop this on us.  What we also know is that the Droid X on 2.1 has some major exchange issues which caused Motorola to hook up DX business users with Touchdown licenses to pass the time until Android 2.2 is released.  When you put these 2 together, this is where we get interested.

One of our readers, needing Touchdown, had to call Motorola after not receiving his free license.  He was then told that Moto is out of Touchdown licenses and they are waiting until after the 2.2 update hits before they plan on replenishing license stock.  And when did he expect the update to hit?  September 22nd.  The last day of summer.  Two days from now.

Again, a rumor from tech support, so take it for what it’s worth.

On a related note, I can tell you that I’ve reached out to both Verizon and Motorola PR and received essentially the same answer.  They are working on the update and expect it to be ready “soon.”

Rather than crossing fingers, let’s cross shoe strings or something?

Cheers sonic!

Monday Poll: Importance of Android 2.2 on DROID X?

by: | posted 09.20.10 | Polls

We sort of hit a tipping point on Friday in regards to the Droid X’s Android 2.2 update which we have been expecting for 2 months now and dropped this rant on you.  After seeing all of the responses in the comments, it’s pretty hard for us to just let go of the subject which is obviously a pretty important piece to a phone that was supposed to be Verizon’s new flagship Droid.  So let me know, how important is this Froyo update to you?

So DROID X 2.2 Update, What’s the Deal?

by: | posted 09.17.10 | News

One of the more frustrating topics that seems to be getting less play than we feel it should is the Android 2.2 update for the Droid X.  You may recall that the DX’s press conference was one of the biggest events in recent history for a single device, claiming some pretty big things, most importantly that Froyo and Flash 10.1 would be just a few short weeks away from launch or by “the end of summer.”  Well guess what? We’re almost in early fall and have zero idea as to when this thing might actually drop.  No word from Verizon and no word from Motorola has left many of us completely frustrated especially with the growing list of known issues for the device on 2.1.

We’ve seen 2 separate leaks come out, one of which was C&D’d out of existence by Motorola since they refused to provide support for it, and another which most didn’t bother touching after a variety of issues appeared.  Personally, I’ve been running the original leak from day 1 and can say that this phone has never run any better.  This thing is as close to a final build as you’ll see sans a couple of minor bugs.  We’re now a month out from that dropping and still nothing.

What might be even more frustrating than seeing leaks removed though, is the fact that the Droid 2 launched, preloaded with Froyo and Flash.  And after seeing it’s system dump playing perfectly well with the leaked 2.2 for the DX, it’s pretty mind boggling as to why we’re still waiting. The hardware on both phones is identical aside from a screen and keyboard, and after using my D2 for a few weeks, I can see that the software is about as close for 2 phones as you’ll find.

Now aside from all of that, we’ve received probably a dozen emails from DX owners over the last 2-3 weeks who have spoken directly with Verizon support and have all been told that the DX update is currently rolling out in batches.  Really?  For some reason though, we have zero confirmations.  And actually, the newest tip we received was pretty specific.  The rep mentioned numbers claiming that there 520,000 Droid X’s in the wild and the update is hitting 10,000 of them at a time.  By our calculations, that’s 90,000 since we first reported this support rumor, but we sit in silence on the confirmation front.

And lastly, we broke news on this secret Verizon Droid X 2.2 screen on Monday which has been created to send via text message to DX owners once the 2.2 rollout has completed.  So the page is there (droiddoes.com/2.2x), still live, just waiting and teasing all of us.  Should we continue to think the update is just days away?  Or are we back to thinking it’s months away?  Or is it actually rolling out now?  What?

Without standing on a soap box demanding an answer, don’t we have reason enough to at least ask Big Red and Moto what’s up?  Don’t we at least deserve some sort of update on progress?  Most people bought this device with the understanding that it would be at the forefront of the Android game, but it’s really just been falling behind.

Thoughts?  Feel free to vent after a couple of Friday happy hour pints, just keep it clean.

Verizon Preparing Android 2.2 Release for DROID X? Hidden Document Sort of Says So

by: | posted 09.13.10 | News

A semi-hidden document was just sent to us from Verizon’s droiddoes.com site and shows the makings of a Droid X 2.2 update in the works.  While no dates are given, this is the first time we’ve seen an Android 2.2 document/mention which even included a few Froyo details for the DX.  It’s an odd page though, and simply references the support page that would normally feature updates including PDFs.

This page was created on 9/10 which would lead us to believe that an update could be just around the corner.  Of course we’re not holding our breath, crossing our fingers or anything that would require effort while waiting for this to actually happen, but it’s at least something.

Can anyone else find the page? :-)

Cheers cmpx!

New Android 2.2 Leak for DROID X, Proceed with Caution

by: | posted 09.13.10 | DROIDX, News, Root

A new Android 2.2 leak has appeared for the Droid X, at this time is only available for rooted users and is apparently a giant pain in the arse.  I had actually been holding off from posting about this after reading through 25+ pages of frustrations in the source forum and can’t recommend that you even bother applying this.  Users have ended up having to flash SBF files more than once in order to recover their phones which we all know is not the most enjoyable process.  We’re not seeing any real benefit or reasons as to why you would want this new leak, other than to say you have a new leak on your phone.

Notes:

  1. Avoid this unless you have the Droid X SBF file.
  2. SERIOUSLY, avoid this unless you have the Droid X SBF file.
  3. This is a deodexed ROM.  I don’t care what anyone tells you, but when files have been tinkered with, deodexed and batched into an update.zip which can only be flashed via custom recovery, it’s a ROM.  This is not the same as the previous leak.
  4. You will likely lose root access.  The current rooting process requires adb meaning avoid unless you are ready to install the Android SDK and bust out some adb commands.
  5. The official is likely 2-3 weeks away.  Might want to just wait this one out.
  6. I did not bother flashing this.

Still want to do it?  Instructions after the jump!
