Today, there are updates available for Foursqaure and the official AIM application through Google Play. For Foursquare, they are currently enhancing the Explore feature and have set their goals on making sure you find the best spots to hang out near your current position. By utilizing your friend’s check-ins and photo uploads, it displays this on a Google Map, letting you know where to head for a good time. On top of that, they have also implemented the fancy hidden menu and slide panel UI which we are always in love with. To see the full changelog, check out the What’s New section in Google Play. 

This might be the first time we have mentioned the official AIM application on DL, but with this new update and a brand new user interface, this seems like the perfect time to start. On top of a re-vamped look, users can now comment on AIM and Facebook posts without leaving the app, use easier navigation through feeds from Instagram, and benefit from a whole ton of bug fixes.

If you are a die hard AIM fan or the mayor of your favorite coffee shop, go pick up the updates now.

In case you didn’t know, today is National Cheeseburger Day. To someone like me, a self-proclaimed cheeseburger guru, this is one of the greatest “holidays” of the year, because it means that I’m on my way to gorging myself on the finest burgers that Portland has to offer. But being that I’m in the tech industry and travel quite often to cities across this beautiful country, I’m always on the hunt for the best burger in the next city that I visit. So in the most selfish of ways, I’m using the DL community to find out where your favorite burger spots are, so that if I end up visiting a town near you, I’ll have a list of spots to check out.

But to make it worth your while, I figured we’d give away a Nexus 7 8GB to one of the lucky readers that leaves a comment. Sound good?

There’s some big app updates out there today. Over on Google Play, you can go pick up the newest versions of Twitter, Foursquare, and Amazon MP3. Twitter takes the cake for update of the day, adding pinch to zoom for photos, photo streams, and new profiles with header images. As for Foursquare, you can manage your connected apps now through the settings menu. Yep, big things. To finish it off, we have Amazon MP3 that which has just added the ability for users in the U.K., Germany, and France to take part in the service.

If you happen to have the Flipboard apk installed on your device (it is still not available through the Play Store) then you can update it to the newest version through the app. Included in the update is a few behind-the-scenes improvements, which means less battery drain and memory strain. For Foursquare users, we haven’t found the official changelog yet, but will update the post as soon as it is made available. If you have yet to try Flipboard, we have included the apk download link below.

The official overhaul that was planned for Foursquare has gone live and needless to say, it’s legit. There doesn’t seem to be a single part of the app that hasn’t received the face-lift and it now features a perfect mix of visual treats and better ways of finding things to do near your location. Foursquare Receives Major Overhaul, “Re-Imagined” Interface Looks and Feels Fantastic is a post from: Droid Life

Two of the more popular Android apps on the block, Temple Run and Foursquare, received updates last evening. For Runners, you finally get to purchase game-themed wallpapers in the store, assuming you have enough coinage. There are three of them:  the Evil Demon Monkeys (pictured above), Temple Wall, and Guy Dangerous. Along with the new ‘papers, “all sorts of improvements and bug fixes” were also included.

Foursquarians, the app now has a mini-map that is displayed when you hit the “Check In” button. Seems like something we should have had ages ago, but nevertheless, we’ll take it.

Temple Run Update Introduces Wallpapers Via Store – Foursquare Brings Us a Map During Check-ins is a post from: Droid Life

Google Maps received an update last week that was supposed to improve battery life while using Latitude, only that’s not all that came with it. If you use the location and check-in service in Maps, you will notice that after a check-in, you are awarded points and a fancy animated leaderboard appears. From there, you can tap to see a full leaderboard that shows an all-time list, current week, and even last week. This new social check-in addition pulls from your Google+ Circles to let you compete with your friends or the world for that matter, similarly to what Foursquare offers.

Google has yet to officially mention that the service exists and has simply posted a brief 1 sentence section in their Maps support section. I’m sure we’ll see more before long.

My question is, does anyone actually use Latitude? I have always been intrigued by the idea of it, however, it’s difficult to find anyone that even knows what it is or how to use it.

Forget the new Google+ update that just went live, today is all about the fact that Foursquare included Android Beam support in their latest update. Now, when you are out with your crew and one of them checks into the strip chess club before you, a simple butt-to-butt rubbing between your Galaxy Nexii will get you checked in right behind him. No need to put your dollars Rook down for any two-thumbed typing. Bump Nexus, tap to Beam the venue, and check-in.

This is all with me assuming that you know another person that owns an NFC device. Love me some Beam.

Not sure what the deal is, but I had like 12 apps asking to be updated this afternoon. Flash Player 11 received some security fixes, Tumblr fixed bugs and added new post screens, Foursquare changed icons, Swiftkey X improved, and Evernote made it easier to go “Premium.” Nothing major from most of these, but you may want to cruise into your market if you haven’t been notified yet and see if anything has a new version. I guess Friday is now a prime time to update your apps before the weekend.

Social check-in apps are doing their best to take over the universe and whether you are into them or not, it’s hard to deny their popularity.  Foursquare (personal fav) received an update last night that took it from “This is a fun and addicting little app” to “Damn you! I better go check-in somewhere now!”  They introduced new leaderboards that allow you to crush your friends in bar-hopping competitions, an “Explore” tab that can recommend a new sushi joint, and more convenient “specials” searching for your area.

The suggestions are based on a little bit of everything – the places you’ve been, the places your friends have visited, your loyalty to your favorite places, the categories and types of places you gravitate towards, what’s popular with other users, the day of the week, places with great tips, the time of day, and so on. We’ll even tell you why we think you should visit a certain place (e.g. popular with friends, similar to your favorite spots).

Friend Leaderboards

You’ll see that we’ve replaced our old leaderboard (and its simple points system and Sunday night reset) with a sliding 7-day barometer of you and your friends. Check-ins now trigger points for dozens of different types of actions – everything from discovering new places, trying new types of restaurants, visiting new cities, getting groups together, hanging out with old friends, and a few things you might not expect.

So, later this week, we’re rolling out six new types of foursquare Specials for merchants. Business will now be able to offer Specials to swarms, groups of friends, regulars, newbies, Mayors, or simply to everyone. And, on the Places screen in the app, you’ll now see a list of all the Specials nearby, so it’s easier to find places that reward foursquare users.

Foursquare 3.0 Overhaul Released: New Leaderboards, “Explore” Tab, and Specials is a post from: Droid Life

OK, so when I wrote that post title, I was feeling all awesome about my Foursquare achievements and then once I actually pulled up the new trophy case feature, all of the awesomeness that had been built up was lost.  Only 14 badges unlocked and a bunch that probably should have been (Gym Rat anyone?)…not bad, but not brag-to-your-momma-worthy.

Anyways, Foursquare on Android received an update yesterday that gave us this new sweet looking trophy case for all of your badges plus a couple of other minor tweaks.  It’s available in the market now if you haven’t updated yet!

Anyone out there with a ridiculous number of badges?  Show me!
