Trademark filings by Motorola from around the globe for the word “XOOM” have surfaced and are leading many to believe that this is in fact the name of the much anticipated Honeycomb tablet that will be unveiled in just 14 days at CES. Filings were made in Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and of course the U.S., so we’re thinking major global push here, right? They did ask if we were all ready to “skip a generation” yesterday and it’s now pretty obvious that this tablet is hoping to change our mobile computing ways forever. I surely hope they succeed.

My only concern is that the name sounds a lot like “Zune.” Or am I just crazy?

Verizon’s COO John Stratton, confirmed today that Motorola will indeed have a 4G LTE offering some time next year. And while we’re pretty sure that phone is codenamed “Etna“, no one would confirm any other details including Moto. Stratton did however, offer up the strength of the relationship between them and the “DROID” founders, which likely means this device he’s talking about will fall under our favorite brand name…

“We’ve got LTE smartphones on the horizon,” Verizon’s Mr. Stratton said. “Motorola will be right there.”

“Over last 13 months, they have done a very good job in supporting our business and have worked their way up into almost a preferred vendor,” Mr. Stratton said. “They have been driving our Droid strategy.”

None of you are surprised though, right? The interesting thing here is the fact that they could have multiple 4G LTE devices out at the same time since the Motorola Everest tablet is also rumored to be capable of utilizing their new network. 15 days from now and we’ll know everything.

The much-anticipated Motorola tablet (Everest) has made another appearance, only this time over at Howard Forums courtesy of user wnrussell. This appears to be the same prototype tablet which we first saw from Andy Rubin last Monday (high-res pictures) only this time we have a couple of additional shots providing a few new bits of critical info. The device is definitely headed to Verizon. If you check out the gallery below, we’ve got Big Red’s name featured as clear, well almost as clear as day, which means this will be the Droid tablet.

Some specs were confirmed: 1GHz dual-core NVIDIA processor, gyroscope, 32GB built in storage, SD card for more, 512MB of RAM, 1280 x 800 screen, mini-HDMI port, camera, and pure awesomeness. This is the tablet you should be saving your money for.

You are looking at a homescreen picture for the Motorola Everest (allegedly), which is the 10″ tablet expected to be headed to Verizon as the “DROID” tablet some time in early 2011. The pic popped up on Mobile01 with a handful of specs from a user claiming to have fondled the device for over an hour. So what does this beauty have packed into it? An NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, 2MP front camera, 5MP back camera, gyroscope, 32GB built-in storage plus an SD card slot. The Moto Tablet will also launch as an LTE device, which we’ve heard in the past.

Check out these high-res Motorola Everest pictures from earlier in the week to see what the device actually looks like. Pretty, right?

On Monday night, Andy Rubin surprised all of us when he pulled out a Motorola prototype tablet running Honeycomb (Android 3.0) and a dual-core NVIDIA processor that we’re pretty sure is the Motorola Everest (Stingray/Droid Tablet). This would be the 10″ tablet that will be everywhere at CES in January and hopefully on store shelves by February or March. You can watch video of it in action at this post, but we wanted to make sure you saw this crystal clear shots of it as well.

A few things we’ve gathered from these shots:

A back camera with what looks to be a dual-LED flash.

A centered front-facing camera.

A volume rocker switch on the side.

Absence of home, search, back and menu keys, but we already knew that.

It’s unbelievably thin.

Seriously, that tablet is so thin. I think Motorola just turned a 10″ tablet into a one-handed device. Win.

Did anyone actually think that a day filled with Gingerbread, the Nexus S, an original Droid update, and a Droid X update with Madden could get get better? It did. Last night, at the D: Dive Into Mobile conference, Andy Rubin took to the stage, pulled out a prototype Motorola tablet running Honeycomb (Android 3.0) and went to town. He talked about so many things that may seem minor, but are so huge in the broad scheme of things.

Here are some of the bombs he dropped:

Pulled out what appeared to be the 10″ Motorola tablet. This bad boy was ultra thin, looked incredibly light and had an amazing screen.

This tablet does not have home, back, menu and search keys. The buttons you press are ALL on-screen, which means they follow you around as you rotate the device.

Showed the new Honeycomb lock screen which had a fantastic new animation. No more swiping bars left or right in Android 3.0. (Pictured above)

When he unlocked it, he had Google Talk open and mentioned video icons being visible.

He showed off Google Maps 5 which will have 3D views of cities. It should be out for mobile devices in a few days.

The new tablet Gmail app was displayed. Two columns included: one for your inbox and one to view an email.

Honeycomb and this tablet will be out some time next year.

Honeycomb will be able to run on both phones and tablets. It’s not just specific to tablets although the apps are able to run in their own specific ways depending on the device.

He also mentioned that this prototype probably costs $10,000. Hah.

Full video of his time on stage after the break, plus some screenshots.

We’ve been talking all week about the Motorola Tegra 2 phone which we were initially thinking was called the Olympus, but now that the codename Everest has surfaced (via Android and Me), we’re starting to think that there is a chance these could be a pair of Android tablets instead. What would you all think about 7-inch and 10-inch tablets launching together running Tegra 2s and Gingerbread/Honeycomb?

Before you laugh at this thought, let’s look back at a quote from Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha in May (via PCWorld)…

“I think that a companion 7- to 10-inch device in a home will become very important, [both] as an augmentation to your TV experience [and] also as a way of walking around the house and streaming TV to that device,” Jha said. “I think we’re very focused in participating in this convergence that’s coming between mobility and home, and I think you will actually see some products from us in a very short period of time.”

Makes sense right?

And in doing this, Motorola would be covering not only the tablet crowd that wants a smaller and more pocketable device like the Galaxy Tab, but would be hitting up the 10-inch iPad audience. We also shouldn’t forget that Motorola seems primed to take down RIM with the launch of the Droid Pro, but adding a 7-inch tablet to the mix would allow them to compete directly with the new Blackberry Playbook.

But what about the name Stingray that we’ve seen a couple of times? Your guess is as good as ours, but our thought is that Motorola is changing codenames like crazy to keep these devices hidden. We can’t say enough how locked up this new wave of Moto devices is. And for argument’s sake, the Droid X had a model number of MB810 and the Olympus has been spotted as MB860 which looks like a natural progression for a phone.

With all that said, just remember that we’re simply speculating and bouncing ideas off of all of you. Until we see some shots of any of these devices, it’ll all be a bunch of rumors that we thoroughly enjoy talking about. Plus, the names Olympus and Everest just roll off the tongue nicely together, don’t they?

Thoughts?

Motorola Olympus and Everest, are they 2 Separate Android Tablets? is a post from: Droid Life
