Dropbox announced today that it has released its Dropbox Sync API to mobile developers, including those who make beautiful apps for Android. With this new Sync API, devs will be able work with Dropbox as if it were a local filesystem, with Dropbox taking care of the background tasks to help make the experience for users seamless across multiple platforms. The goal here is to allow the API to take care of the complexity behind syncing, caching and working offline, so that devs can focus on building great apps.

While I’m no developer, and talk of APIs is above my pay grade, I’m always excited to hear that Dropbox support has become easier for developers to integrate into their apps. In the past, from the sounds of it, writing code to include Dropbox syncing was a mess. In fact, the Dropbox team mentioned that the Squarespace Note developer was able to cut his Dropbox code in half after switching over to this new API.

Oh yeah, Mediafire has finally come to Android. One of the web’s best storage lockers, and one that we use quite often to host files, has arrived with what should be considered a decent offering for a first release. To manage your free 50GB of storage, Mediafire has given us an app that allows you to upload, download, move, share and manipulate your files with. The only thing I’m seeing that’s missing at this point, is the ability to batch move or delete, otherwise it’s not half bad.

Last night, the Dropbox team released a public beta of their new 2.2.2.8 build for users to provide feedback on. Check out the full changelog and download the beta below.

Christmas is coming early in Android land! The Dropbox elves have been in the workshop all week preparing this exciting preview release for you.

What’s new:

Effortlessly share several of your beautiful photos at once,

Organize your favorite photos into albums. You can share them too!

Delete multiple photos at once

UI improvements and updates throughout

Lots of other little tweaks and bug fixes

Additionally, we’re trying something new with this forum build. We’ve added a feature to opt in for future early releases directly through the app. For forum build downloads this feature is on by default so you can easily get updates to the forum build and the final release a bit early. You can also toggle this option on and off in the app’s settings.

Help make this the best Android release yet by sharing your feedback with us. So create some albums and share some photos, and let us know what you think!

I love Box. The app. Mind out of the gutter, people, I’m talking about the cloud storage app, which was just updated for Android. In version 2.0, users can preview items from within the app, so you no longer have to exit to a 3rd party application to see what you are working with. This new version supports 75 different file types of previews including Word docs, PowerPoint presentations, Photoshop files, and PDFs.

Along with new previews, the Box team tossed in offline folders, so that as you venture into the desert looking for Thunderdome, you’ll have access to all of your files. There is a transfer manager to help keep track of file transfers as well, plus the ability to click on Box links in an email or webpage and load up the Box app, rather than the browser.

It’s a solid update to one of our favorite cloud storage services.

Once again, Dropbox has teamed up with an OEM to offer a large amount of storage just for purchasing a device. This time, Samsung has promised future owners of the Galaxy Note II and Galaxy Camera will get 50GB of storage at their disposal. This is especially enticing for owners of the camera having a huge space to immediately put all of your photos.

Only question is now: which of the carriers will actually let this deal stand? We have seen Verizon be extremely resistant to offers like this in the past, maybe we’ll see a change this time around?

My personal favorite cloud storage service, Box, received an update on Android this afternoon that introduced multi-selection of folders and files, plus the ability to copy and move them. In order to activate this new functionality, all you have to do is long press on the first folder or file that you would like copied or moved, and a column filled with check boxes will slide out from the left side. From there, tap away on boxes to select other files and folders. The icons on the bottom will let you move, copy or delete.

Have you chosen Box as your many cloud storage service, or are you too invested in Dropbox?

When Samsung announced the Galaxy SIII in London, they mentioned that the phone would come with 50GB of free Dropbox storage for 2 years, adding to its appeal. When announced stateside though, there wasn’t a mention of the promo from any of the carriers, but we just assumed that it was still a go. And then today, a Dropbox moderator mentioned specifically to a member of their forums that AT&T and Verizon had opted out of the deal. The member was asking for help because they were not seeing the free storage appear after purchasing the phone, yet did not specify the version, and that’s when this moderator chimed in with the opting out stuff.

Update: According to an official Dropbox support page, this is indeed true – Verizon and AT&T have opted out of the 50GB promo.

Not sure how that affects your decision to purchase this phone, but do understand that after 2 years, we weren’t even sure what was going to happen to that storage. This isn’t a free 50GB of storage for life type of thing, unless Dropbox decides later on that it should be. It was like a 2-year test drive. It would have been a nice add-on, but there are so many cloud storage services out there at this point, that you should be able to survive.

We still have word in to VZW, Dropbox, and Samsung, so if we hear something different, we’ll be sure to pass it on.

While Chrome and Google Maps were more bug fixing and stability tweaks, Yelp, Instagram, and Dropbox received a couple of new features. Yelp has added support for the country of Finland, not really beneficial for us over here, but cool nonetheless.

Instagram has added better search functionality for users, while Dropbox has added video streaming for Ice Cream Sandwich users and the ability to upload files of any size. Righteous. If you haven’t updated your apps yet, now would be the time to do so.

The application doesn’t stop there – with built in Adobe Reader, you can essentially open any type of file for viewing including PNGs, GIFs, and even PDFs.
Let’s be honest, Google Drive is really just a rebranded Google Docs that is aiming draw in a wider variety of consumers. Its current base is mostly business users or those of us who would rather not fork out the cash required for a top tier office suite but who still need cloud access to documents and other files. As “Drive” though, it’s clear that Google wants to take in users from the “cloud storage” arena and move away from simply being a “cloud document service.” After all, their new motto for the service is “Keep everything. Share anything.” With a free 5GB of storage to get everyone started and upgrades at monthly fees to expand your Drive, are you ready to make this your one-stop shop for the cloud? Will you stick with Dropbox or will you continue to use a variety of services?

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

With the launch of Google’s Drive service just on the horizon, Dropbox is making it easier than ever to share the files you own with a single link. Starting now, when you scroll through your entire list of folders and files, you will see a link indicator on the right side. Click that button to be taken to the page where your file/folder resides and then easily share that link among family and friends. No more having to share entire folder contents or adding permissions, which was becoming rather bothersome.

According to The Next Web, Google’s Dropbox competitor known as Drive, will launch next week on Android, iOS, Windows and Mac. When released, users will receive 5GB of free storage with the option to upgrade to more at various price levels.

What we are trying to decide though, is if we care? Dropbox and Box are both awesome cloud storage services with great Android apps, so why switch? I already have 50GB on Box for free and another 30GB on Dropbox thanks to my HTC One X, so why would I want to migrate over to Google’s new service? Well for one, it adds another level to the ecosystem. Our email, contacts, music, navigation, maps, calendars, etc. are all run by Google, so this would add a missing piece. If your life is dedicated to Google, you should be happy about this. If you love stiff competition outside of the mega-companies, then this may ruffle your feathers.

Ready for Google Drive or are you satisfied with the others?
