Back in early February, we caught wind of a new HTC device that appeared to be headed to Verizon under the codename “DLXPLUS.” For those not familiar with the naming convention, think of the DROID DNA as the “DLX.” At first, we were hoping that this would be Big Red’s version of the HTC One because the purported specs matched up exactly, but since we know now that the device is landing everywhere but there, we’ll assume this phone must be something somewhat different. Will it be the DROID DNA+ or perhaps the DROID ONE (not likely “One”)?

Over the weekend, a device under the model number HTC6445LVW stopped by Bluetooth SIG to pick up a certification. While there isn’t a mention of the codename “DLXPLUS,” we’re sort of assuming here that it’s the same device. The DROID DNA runs under the model number HTC6435LVW and codename “DLX,” so it would make a lot of sense for 6445 to be the next in line. Also, the “VW” in the model number stands for Verizon Wireless, in case you were wondering.

In the previous spotting of the DLXPLUS, we got what are being reported as potential specs, all of which match up to the One. The device should have a 4.7″ 1080p FHD display, 2GB RAM, Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor clocked at 1.7GHz, 2.1MP front camera, 13MP rear camera (or is it a 4MP UltraPixel?), 16GB internal storage, Jelly Bean, and Sense 5.0.

It would have been foolish for Verizon to completely pass up on HTC’s newest device, even if they only think they can only sell phones branded as DROID, Galaxy, and the iPhone. But one way to make it fit their needs, is to brand it “DROID,” slap a fun name on it, and then promoted it their own way outside of HTC’s One campaign.

Verizon folks, there is still a chance that you get a device similar to the One, it just won’t be called the One.

In a recent discussion at MWC, the head of HTC UK disclosed to the press that the manufacturer’s One device, will be their only flagship device this year. To help with marketing strategies that are now in place and with efforts focused on bringing the same unit to as many carriers throughout the world as possible, this is exactly what HTC has been needing – a top dog device, with massive marketing efforts put behind it in order to compete with Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S4 and the mysterious Motorola X phone.

Of course, HTC has other devices coming for their mid-range line and Windows partnership, but in terms of Android, this is “the One.” We should also point out that for Verizon, HTC does have another device codenamed the DLXPLUS that we should be seeing sometime soon. No word yet on if it’s a One branded to be a DROID though or a separate device altogether.

The year of 2013 is really shaping up to be the best year for Android. We have our top OEM’s firing on all cylinders in terms of hardware and software, plus with each one of them competing with each other to bring the best devices forward, the true winners are us, the consumers.

Developer and HTC insider @LlabTooFeR appears to have leaked the specs to a new version of HTC’s DROID DNA on Verizon. Remember the codename of “dlx” that clung to that phone as it approached launch? That same codename has appeared in a new device but with an addition, making it the “DLXPLUS.” Are we going to see a revamped DNA already or is this Verizon’s version of the HTC M7?

The last rumor we saw for the M7 pegged it for release on every major U.S. carrier in March with a delay at Verizon, leaving many of you disappointed. If we look at this set of specs, though, it sounds identical to the M7, only with Verizon bands. If this list is correct, we have the same quad-core Snapdragon S4 AQQ8064 processor clocked at 1.7Ghz, a 4.7″ 1080p display, 13MP rear camera, 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, Sense 5.0, and Jelly Bean. There is even a mention of an SD card slot for expandable storage.

According to @LlabTooFeR this will support all of the same networks that the current DLX supports, which means Verizon’s LTE.

We saw HTC do something similar with the One X, last year, going with a plus version after the device had been out for a while to help give it new life. The odd thing here, is that the DNA has only been out for three or four months, so it seems early for a re-release. But hey, we won’t complain. Verizon needs to release something or it’s going to be a slow Q1.

Moments ago, a press render of HTC’s 5″ super device, the DROID DNA, was posted onto Twitter. Along with the image was also a very important piece of info, a suspected release time of “early December.” From earlier reports, we were expecting this device to be made available around mid-November, but that wasn’t confirmed from HTC or Verizon. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the device with Verizon branding, but it is the first we’ve seen of a completely new DROID eye and red binding around the edges.

According to Verizon’s most recent MAP (minimum advertised price) list, the HTC DLX (the 5″ 1080p phone) may launch as the HTC DROID DNA around November 20. We are under the impression that this is the same phone because of the model number HTC6435LVW, a number that we first reported months ago along with the codename “dlx.”

What’s even more interesting than the name, is the price that Big Red has listed. How does $199 on 2-year contract sound for a device with an industry leading 1080p display? The DROID DNA should also sport a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 16GB of internal storage, 2GB RAM, 8MP camera, and run Jelly Bean. By all means, this is one of the most high-end devices we have seen in some time, and is at a level that Verizon usually attaches to a premium $299 price.

The first photos of this device appeared over the weekend, showing one of the sexier Android devices of the last year. A November release matches up to what our sources have been whispering into our inbox over the last few weeks.

On a related note, the Galaxy Note 2 is appearing on this list as well, with a $299 price tag and a potential launch of, today. We know that it isn’t launching today, but our sources mentioned yesterday that the device could go up for pre-order as early as tomorrow.

Thoughts on the name? “DROID DNA.”

There she is, the HTC DLX that is headed to Verizon. We have been following the “dlx” saga probably longer than any other site, so it feels fantastic to finally see it floating about in the wild. This is HTC’s 5″ 1080p phone, similar to the J Butterfly that was announced in Japan, only this one should be launching on Verizon in a month or so. We had heard from a couple of sources of ours that this was in VZW testers’ hands, so the first set of leaks popping up is no surprise.

What do we learn from this new leak and first set of photos? It looks about like we would have expected it to, with a matte or soft black finish, red accents, and Verizon branding. The display looks massive, and is at 5-inches. There is an 8MP camera on the back, 2MP camera on the front, 4G LTE branding, a BeatsAudio logo, 16GB of on-board storage, 2GB RAM, 2500mAh battery, and a quad-core processor, which we are assuming is the Snapdragon S4 Pro.

It’s running Android 4.1.1 (Jelly Bean) and Sense 4+.

We still have no release date or official announcement from either Verizon or HTC. Rumors peg it for a November launch, which we can’t wait for.

Is this the phone you have been waiting for? Can it top the Galaxy Note 2?

You know the HTC “dlx” or 5″ 1080p Verizon phone that we have been talking about for months now? HTC just announced it for Japan as the J Butterfly, and it looks stunning.

The device does indeed sport a 5″ Super LCD 3 1080p display (440ppi), Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor, LTE, Jelly Bean (Android 4.1), 16GB internal storage, 2GB RAM, 8MP rear camera, 2.1MP front camera, 2020mAh battery, and a microSD card slot. The J Butterfly weighs 140g and is 9.1mm thick. For Japan, it will come in 3 colors: red, white and black. HTC is expecting to launch it in December.

As you can see from the pictures of the black version, this looks a lot like the phone that was leaked back on September 1.

So what does this mean for a U.S. variant? Typically when we see a phone get announced internationally, OEMs tend to announce it stateside before long. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the phone is going to be unveiled tomorrow or the following week, since Verizon’s schedule is pretty full, but you never know, we could see it in the next month or so.

Thoughts? Is this your next phone, should it come to Verizon?

Did long-time HTC developer, Football, posted the official specs for the HTC DLX on Twitter? Well, we would certainly like to think so. As you all know, this is a device we first outed via benchmark back in July. The “dlx” is supposedly headed to Verizon under model number HTC6435, with a 1080p display and a set of specs we have yet to see in an mobile device. If Football is correct, then this phone will indeed have a 5-inch 1080p display, run on a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, contain 1.5GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, a 12MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, a 2500mAh non-removable battery, and run Android 4.1.2.

What he didn’t mention was a carrier partner, but so far, all we have seen is references to Verizon, who passed on the HTC One X. This phone may launch elsewhere or internationally, however, we would be more than surprised to see it not show up as one of Big Red’s big holiday releases, along side the Note 2 and RAZR MAXX HD.

The picture above is rumored to be the device. A rumored retail name that has been tossed around is “DROID Incredible X.” It’s tough to tell if that will make the cut or not.

Lastly, if it matters to you, the device received its GCF certification last week.

On Friday, we were introduced to two new devices that could turn into the next Nexus phone and tablet, the “occam” and “manta” respectively. We have no idea who is making these devices, even if some are jumping to the wild conclusion that they are made by Motorola. While we would love to see a Motorola Nexus, a codename is just not enough to go on to assume that this is made by them. For all we know, the “occam” is the oft-rumored LG Nexus phone and the “manta” is the Nexus 10 made by Samsung.

To help validate the case that these devices are real though, we thought we should point out that the devices have been benchmarked in AnTuTu. The “manta” is showing up as running a 1.7GHz processor and Android version “JellyBeanM.” The “occam” is showing up with a 1.5GHz processor and Android 4.2, the version of Android expected to debut in the next month on the next Nexus.

We can’t necessarily tell what type of processor either is running, unless we compare the “occam” to a benchmark run on the HTC DLX (or what some are referring to as the “Incredible X“). The DLX is expected to be HTC’s newest flagship device with a 5″ 1080p display and quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor. If you look at the “occam” and the DLX, the processor speed is identical at 1512MHz. This could be a coincidence or it could mean they are running the same chipset.

If it helps the cause, the LG Nexus is reportedly based off of the LG Optimus G which also runs a Snapdragon S4 Pro.

Confusing and exciting times.

Over the last week or so, the holiday lineup on Verizon has really started to take shape. Most companies took to press events at the end of August and beginning of September to announce their Q4 devices for Big Red, while others have remained slightly silent. Thanks to a handful of leaks and rumors though, we have been given a clear enough picture that we can at least start to talk about it. Verizon may have introduced questionable shared data plans, however, they still have the biggest LTE network in the land, and are also about to take back the “best device lineup in the land” crown as well. Q4 of 2012 is going to be a time to remember in the history of smartphones.

How are you going to decide which phone to get? Let’s walk through the expected lineup, with potential dates, and see if we can’t help.

HTC DROID Incredible X

HTC is possibly creating the most impressive smartphone we have ever seen, if rumors are to be believed. Industry pundits have decided to call it the DROID Incredible X, and are expecting it to have a 5″ 1080p display (480ppi), Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor, 1.5GB RAM, NFC, LTE, and an ultra-thin red-accented body. No one has seen the phone other than in a set of blurry cam shots, but even those should be enough to get the juices flowing.

This phone is expected to hit stores in November.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2

Samsung made the Galaxy Note 2 official for all 5 of the major carriers here in the U.S. This phone will sport a 5.5″ HD Super AMOLED display (non-PenTile), 1.6GHz Exynos quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, microSD slot for up to 64GB of external storage, 3100mAh battery, and will run Jelly Bean (Android 4.1). It’s the successor to the original Galaxy Note, a device that created an entirely new smartphone segment in the market place. Who says oversized phones aren’t in demand?

This phone will launch by mid-November.

Motorola DROID RAZR HD and RAZR MAXX HD

Motorola unveiled their new RAZR family at an event in early September, but at the time, would only give us a launch date for one of the devices, the RAZR M. While we are huge fans of the RAZR M, the stars of the show were the new RAZR HD and RAZR MAXX HD. With their 4.7″ HD Super AMOLED displays, 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processors, 1GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, expandable microSD slots, 8MP cameras, and Jelly Bean software, they are Motorola’s most powerful and appealing phones to date. The biggest selling point for both phones may end up being battery life though, with the RAZR HD holding 2530mAh of juice and the MAXX HD somewhere around 3300mAh.

These phones will launch “before the holidays.”

New Nexus?

We would be surprised if Verizon ever gets another Nexus device from Google. In fact, after the pissing matches that have gone on between Big Red and Google over updates and carrier control, this probably won’t happen. If it were to happen though, it would happen in Q4 and could be a device from Samsung, LG, Sony or maybe even HTC.

LG Spectrum 2

Last week, LG announced the Optimus G, one of the more impressive Android devices ever created. The Spectrum 2, is not that phone. The Spectrum 2 is the U.S. variant of the LG Optimus LTE2, which is actually a pretty decent phone on paper. It runs a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, has 1GB RAM, a 4.7″ HD True IPS+ display, LTE, NFC, and will run Ice Cream Sandwich. This phone is no slouch, but when compared to the big names like the Incredible X, Galaxy Note 2, and new RAZR HDs, it’s probably going to get lost in the shuffle.

This phone will reportedly arrive in October.

Samsung Stratosphere 2

The new Stratosphere 2 is the phone for those that can’t live without a physical keyboard. It should run a Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor, have a Super AMOLED Plus display (not HD), and connect to Verizon’s 4G LTE network. It won’t be high-end, but the keyboard should be decent and the phone will more than likely be powerful enough to satisfy as a mid-range device.

This phone will reportedly arrive any day now.

DROID RAZR M, Incredible 4G LTE, Intuition and Samsung Galaxy S3

If you can’t wait for any of the previously mentioned phones, don’t forget that Verizon already has a couple of phones out that are worth a look. The DROID RAZR M (our review) and its “edge-to-edge” display was one of our favorites of the last year. The Samsung Galaxy S3 (our review) has been out for a couple of months and will still be better than some of the phones that have yet to launch. The Incredible 4G LTE (our review) is probably our least favorite of Verizon’s recent releases, but it’s small and affordable if that’s what you are looking for. The LG Intuition, we recommend that you pass on.

Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC Windows Phone 8X

If Android isn’t in the cards, then I suggest you wait for the new Windows Phone 8 offerings from Nokia and HTC. The new Nokia Lumia 920 has hardware that matches up to almost any high-end Android phone, one of the coolest accessory lineups ever, and will be a welcomed change on the design front. The HTC 8X is up there in specs too and has a unique look, but has a slightly smaller foot print than the Lumia. Each phone will impress you in its own way. Even as an Android fanboy, I’m dying to get my hands on these new Windows phones.

These phones will reportedly arrive in November.

iPhone 5

Yep, the new iPhone 5 is already available. If you hate Android and aren’t interested in what Microsoft is doing, then this is probably the option for you. If you still like Android, going to this phone would probably be a downgrade.

____________________________________________________

If had to rank these as of now, it would probably look something like this:

HTC DROID Incredible X

Samsung Galaxy Note 2

Motorola RAZR MAXX HD

Nokia Lumia 920

New Nexus (which probably won’t happen)

So now that you know what’s coming, which phone is topping your list?

Verizon’s Epic Q4 Roadmap, Which Will be Your Next Smartphone? is a post from: Droid Life

(Concept design of the HTC “dlx”)

As we inch closer to the end of 2012, the number of rumors surrounding the next Nexus phone from Google are going to overwhelm you. Some will be garbage, one or two here and there may be right on point, but for the most part, you should take them all as strictly rumor. Last week it was LG who was going to create a Nexus based off of its Optimus G phone, and today, it’s going to be HTC who creates one based off of its 1080p “dlx” (DROID Incredible X) phone.

According to this report our of GSMArena, the anonymous tipster who received the information from a “very reliable source within HTC,” said that the phone will sport a 5″ 1080p display, Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor, 2500mAh battery, an ultra slim body, up to 64GB of internal storage, LTE connectivity, and carry the name Nexus 5 (clearly a play on the Nexus 7 tablet name).

But since it’s a Nexus, and Google tends to release some sort of new version of Android with each new device, we could see Android 4.1.2 as well. Android 4.1.2 (still Jelly Bean) is said to include “bugfixes, Project Butter improvements, extra lockscreen functionality as well as other minor tweaks.”

While this is nothing more than a rumor and fun to talk about, I would be beyond happy if HTC took the “dlx” and made it into a Nexus. To this day, I still love the One X, but that’s because I put a stock Jelly Bean ROM on it. HTC uses some of the better materials of any OEM in its phones and takes design very seriously. Very few phones feel as well made as this year’s from HTC.

Sound possible?

A purported Verizon roadmap obtained by the folks at PhoneArena may give us a look at the smartphone rollout schedule for the next couple of months. It’s filled with Android devices, some of which you’ll care about, others you may not. If anything, it appears as if Verizon isn’t about to slow down now that the iPhone 5 is out. No sir, we are going to see top Android phones, the new Windows Phone 8 devices, and even a new Blackberry 10 phone. It’s a good time to be a Verizon customer.

HTC DROID Incredible X

The HTC “dlx” (yes that’s DLX not DiX) will apparently roll with the name DROID Incredible X when in launches some time in November. I’m not going to lie, I think the name is ridiculous, but I get what they are doing. Take the HTC One X which Verizon foolishly passed on initially, then decide now that they want one after seeing it’s success, know that they have to make it an Incredible if they do carry it, so let’s call it the DROID Incredible X! We had previously heard that the device would be “DROID” branded, so this makes sense. We also know that the device will potentially run a new Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor, have 1.5GB of RAM, and a 5″ 1080p display with 480ppi. This is the phone that has me more excited than any other phone of 2012. Well, besides the next Nexus.

LG Spectrum 2

We have been covering the LG Spectrum 2 for months now, but it may finally launch in October. As you may recall, this is essentially the Optimus LTE2 and is a solid phone with mostly beefed up specs. It has a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, NFC, LTE, a 4.7″ HD IPS+ display, and 16GB of internal storage. The only thing to remember here, is that this is not the new Optimus G. Not that it’ll be a bad phone, but I’d be worried about purchasing this when LG is likely to focus all of their efforts on the G over this. Ask any original Spectrum owner what they think about LG and their software update time lines and you aren’t going to hear many good things.

Samsung Stratosphere 2

We have also been talking about the Samsung Stratosphere 2 for a couple of months and are surprised that it hasn’t been released already. For keyboard lovers, this may end up being one of your last options. It should get a beefed up Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor, a Super AMOLED Plus display, and again, have an actual physical keyboard for you to tap away on. The original Stratosphere was a low-end phone to say the least – this one should be decent. Today’s roadmap claims that we should see it any day now.

Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC Windows Phone 8X

I’ll be perfectly honest, I’m super excited for these two new Windows Phone 8 devices from HTC and Nokia. I test drove a Lumia 900 for a weekend and loved the operating system. Unfortunately for the operating system, the phone itself was garbage. But even after Nokia put out a subpar device in the 900, the 920 looks to be amazing with new optics, a Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor, 4.5″ HD display, NFC, LTE, 32GB of internal storage, and a big 2000mAh battery. The HTC Windows Phone 8X looks to be on par with the Lumia 920. It has a slightly smaller screen and less internal storage, but it does have HTC’s ImageSense chip, which means the camera will be awesome. We are looking at November for these two.

Blackberry 10

Blackberry 10! Apparently, this roadmap has this device penciled in for a Q1 2013 launch at the earliest. Some pics of a purported Blackberry 10 device popped up all over the place this week in case you were looking to catch a glimpse of it. Who knows if it’ll be worth talking about, but if anything, it’ll be nice to see RIM join the party that everyone else has been at since 2009.

Excited? So in November, you’ll have to choose between the Galaxy Note 2 and the Incredible X. Which one will it be?

We all know that HTC has an event planned for September 19 (tomorrow) in New York, but through Twitter, they just gave us the first real clue as to what we can expect. Let’s see if we can decode it together.

First, the “19.9″ simply means September 19, the date of tomorrow’s event. The 10:08 time on the corner of the device, we were initially thinking could be transformed to be 10:80. Since it looks like a clock and 10:80 isn’t an actual time, this could be there way of representing it. Not likely. Since they use 10:08 in all of their device photos, I’d instead lean towards it not hinting at a 1080p device and is the actual clock, which leads us into the next clue.

They used the message “When beautiful hardware meets stunning software,” however, that doesn’t tell us much other than to expect a device that looks and runs beautifully. Or is that referring to Windows Phone 8 which many refer to as one of the most beautiful operating systems around? The minimal look of the 10:08 clock certainly resembles Windows Phone more than it does Android.

The fourth piece to this puzzle is the actual device on display. Is that a tablet or a phone? We all know that HTC is working on a 1080p phone codenamed the “dlx,” but since this gives off more of a Windows Phone 8 impression, I’m not sure this is it. To Tim and I, this actually looks more like a tablet, but then again, maybe this corner picture isn’t of the actual device and is simply a render that they felt like using?

Update: If you need any more confirmation that this will be a Windows Phone unveiling, then look no further than the official Windows Phone Twitter account which just so happened to mention HTC’s “cryptic” Tweet.

You tell us. I’m starting to lean towards this being Windows Phone 8 stuff and nothing more.

These days, you have to even take press renders with a grain of salt, but could this be the final rendering of the 5 inch HTC phone/tablet hybrid we have been hearing rumors about lately? We must say, the black and red is looking pretty good on this device, and would hopefully point it squarely in Verizon’s direction. And we also have a tentative name for this beast of a phone: the One X 5.

Update: The image above is a concept image by Flickr user Dannix. It’s not real, meaning the name won’t be HTC One X 5. Well, unless he’s just calling this a “concept” to keep HTC’s legal department off his case. We’re leaning towards it simply being a pretty picture. The artist also created a concept for the next HTC Flyer device which looks fancy, but again, is also just a concept.

1080p screen, quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor and LTE packed inside the awesome build quality that the One series already has – what else do you want from a phone? This certainly looks like the pictures of the “dlx” device that we first uncovered in a benchmark a couple of months back. A rumor over the weekend suggested that it may also contain 1.5GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, a non-removable battery, and a display with 480 ppi.

HTC has a press event lined up for Wednesday, could we see this device being announced or will HTC make us wait a little bit longer?

The HTC “dlx” or better known to most as the upcoming 1080p 5″ device, may sport a quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 1.5GB of RAM, 16GB internal storage, a non-removable battery, and a pixel density of 480ppi, according to HTCSource. This rumor also suggests that the phone may end up being DROID-branded on Verizon, since the source of this information claims that the phone has a “red techno” background and the now-famous “DROID” notification sound. The phone we have seen in pictures (above) is also said to be the device we have all been waiting for.

There is a chance that we could see this phone next week at HTC’s NYC event.

Does this sound like your dream device?
