BlindType has had a long history in Android. Introduced to the public exactly two years ago in August of 2010, it was quickly snatched up by Google, then implemented into what we now know as the Ice Cream Sandwich keyboard. Well, the creators still aren’t done innovating quite yet. Recently released for iOS and coming later for Android, is Fleksy.

Fleksy is a new replacement keyboard, designed for the blind and partially sighted users. But don’t worry, if you’re able-sighted, use of the app can benefit you as well. The goal as stated by the developers is to make typing fast and easy. One of the ways this will be made possible is to allow for users to type wherever they want, with no actual keyboard on the screen. One of the more remarkable features is that when typing a word, you don’t even have to get a single character correct. Magically, Fleksy knows what you’re trying to type and auto-corrects it for you. Another nifty looking feature is a swipe to delete action that they show off in the video below.

It’s going to be pretty awesome from what we see in the video, so fingers crossed it makes its way to Android sooner rather than later!

Everyone remember Blind Type? This was the keyboard that never actually became available on Android, but was teased a couple of times as one that could let you type “blindly” and still create perfect sentences. It would predict the words you were attempting to type based upon the vicinity of the letters you had hit. The video of it in action was all the rage, but when Google bought them before they offered anything to the public, most of us continued to hope that some day we would see the technology built into a version of Android. That time is now with Ice Cream Sandwich.

As you can see in the demo I put together below, the keyboard works better than expected at predicting words that I was spamming off in all directions. You will notice that while each word is being typed, it gives you options that can be selected as well (similar to Swiftkey). And just in case it didn’t pick up the exact word or offer me a proper solution, it also does a phenomenal job at offering up replacement words that you may have meant through a pull down menu. I tried to type the message below as fast as I could to see how it would perform – I’d say it handled my jumbled jargon quite nicely.

Back in August, we all the saw the debut of a new keyboard called BlindType that would look to change the way people type on their smartphones. An ingenious idea that allowed you to type “blindly”, meaning you could type words or sentences without actually pressing the correct keys each time. With small on-screen keyboards dominating our lives, BlindType would allow you to type in the area of keys and then it would do its best to predict exactly what it is you were trying to type. It sort of took the world by storm and just as we were anticipating its release, it was purchased by our friends over at Google.

So over the last couple of weeks, one of our readers brought back up the subject of BlindType, wondering why its website had been taken down with almost no mention of it anywhere. Our thoughts? Maybe it will make a Gingerbread appearance. We’re expecting the new Android 2.3 to be announced within the next couple of weeks and this could be one heck of an addition that most people probably wouldn’t have expected.

Oh and lookie here, our buddy Taylor over at Android and Me has a similar thought.

Cheers Kane!

Been wondering what happened to BlindType, the keyboard company thats demo videos took the world by storm? They were hiding in a room secretly negotiating terms to a deal with Google it looks like. The company announced today that the search megatron has acquired them…

We are excited to announce that BlindType has been acquired by Google!

We want to thank everyone for their overwhelming support and positive feedback.
We know that typing on your mobile device can be a frustrating experience, which is why
we’ve worked hard to make touch typing easier and faster than ever – the way it should be.

We’re excited to join Google, and look forward to the great opportunities for mobile innovation that lie ahead.

The BlindType team

If you aren’t familiar with BlindType, just understand that they created a keyboard technology that lets you type messages without being even slightly accurate. You can essentially type blindly and still get the results you intended. A few videos of their keyboard in action circulated a couple of months ago and people were instantly blown away.

BlindType in action on Android:

So does this mean BlindType will be included in future Android builds? Wouldn’t that be amazing.

There are so many keyboards on the market these days that it takes something pretty special to grab our attention and BlindType has managed to do just that. A keyboard that is smart enough to know what you are attempting to type as long as you are in the vicinity of a key sounds too good to be true right? Not to the BT team.

When an early video of BlindType surfaced with the new keyboard at work on an i*hone, our jaws dropped and obviously had us wondering about the status of an Android version. Wonder no more as we already have it in action on a Nexus One. This will also give you a much better idea of the potential in a way that no words can describe…

How can you not be excited for this keyboard? Is this the Swype killer? To find out the latest info including release dates, BT is encouraging users to follow them on Twitter.
