Back in June, ASUS announced the ZenWatch 2, but never spoke of availability or pricing. This morning, we have a few more specs, plus European pricing. As of right now, ASUS states that the ZenWatch 2 will hit Europe in October, priced at €149. It is very likely we shall see it hit the US, but we have yet to receive a timeframe or official price. The ASUS ZenWatch, first released in November of last year, had its price slashed over on the Google Store this week, from its original $199 price to just $129. Featuring a 1.63” AMOLED display, Snapdragon 400 processor, and 1.4Wh battery, the ZenWatch is a solid Android Wear device, even allowing users to test their heart rate by holding the side of the device. Anyone holding off on picking up a ZenFone 2 from ASUS because it shipped with a locked bootloader now has reason to celebrate going into the weekend. Last week, ASUS admitted during an investor call that internally, they had tossed around the idea of trying to acquire HTC. That’s it, though, they just threw out the idea at a board meeting or something before moving on to other matters. They even followed up the brief mention of an acquisition by saying that they were unlikely to even attempt such a thing, because they
aren’t interested in buying companies on their deathbeds like to grow organically. (more…)
ASUS has talked about buying HTC, at least internally, according to Reuters, who spoke with the company’s CFO. Of course, that bit of news is making headlines this morning, and not the follow-up statement which essentially said that ASUS is unlikely to make such a move because they depend on “organic growth” rather than growth by acquisition. At the annual Computex exhibition for manufacturers, taking place in Taipei, ASUS unveiled the ZenWatch 2. Running the latest Android Wear software, the ZenWatch 2 will come in a variety of finishes, along with a large collection of straps. To start it off, the ZenWatch 2 will come in two sizes, presumably for big and small wrists, with Stainless Steel casing in either Rose Gold, Silver, and Gunmetal.
When compared to last year’s ZenWatch, there are only a few major differences, but it is clear that ASUS thought quite hard about how they could make the design and usability much better. To start, ASUS added in a dedicated Power button on the side of the device, with ASUS stating that it allows for users to interact with their device in an all-new way. (more…)
