I have to back up my ROMs constantly since I always like to flash the newest stuff out there. For example – when flashing this Ice Cream Sandwich port, I had to wipe everything. So I backed up all my info and flashed the ROM. Come to find out I have a very important text message from a certain person in my inbox which I must retrieve. Well, it’s a real pain to flash back to my old ROM, then redo all my work. There must be a way to get those texts!

Thanks to AppExtractor this task is now a possibility. Now you can reload selected applications, SMS/MMS messages, Wi-Fi settings and a good list of other essentials you might want to take from your previous flashings. Isn’t this great? The app itself is free in the Market, but there is also a key which can be purchased for $1.99, which allows you to restore more than 5 applications from previous backups at a time.

Awesome application? Yes. A new Android device essential? Yes. Go grab it. Rooted users only need apply.

Now this is the type of application I need to see, as my SF Giants need to put in some serious work to have a repeat of last year. At Bat ’11 is the must have app for all baseball lovers as we’re getting closer to the postseason. The application once ran $15 last year, then they dropped it to $7 and there it has stayed. And now you can grab it for free thanks to Amazon.

At Bat ’11 lets users follow their favorite teams, watch videos, and read plenty of analyst’s opinions. All in all, the app is fantastic – so if you haven’t already purchased it, go pick it up now.

One of the many perks of rooting our Android phones is the ability to take screen shots whenever, and wherever we please. Our buddies over at AndroidSpin stumbled upon an app that will give this pleasure to the many non-rooted users that still remain. And do not worry, if you don’t want to root, no one is forcing you to, yet.

Setting up the application is not as easy as just buying, then installing. The developer explains setup much better than I ever could, so I will leave it up to them:

This application will instruct you to download and install a free desktop application on your Windows or Mac. Once installed, you must run the desktop application with your phone attached to your computer. This will enable screenshots on your phone.

Once you’ve done this, you can disconnect your phone and take screenshots whenever you want. However, every time you restart your phone, you’ll have to connect it to your computer and run the desktop application again. If you restart your phone frequently, this app may not be for you, as it may prove to be too inconvenient.

If you are not against this setup, and the $5 price tag, then give it a whirl and see what you think. Best of luck to all you non roots out there. Don’t forget, even non rooted users can use the Android SDK through USB Debugging mode to take screen shots on their Android device for free.

Amazon comes through again and offers up Age of Zombies as its “Free App Of The Day“. Is it possibly the greatest zombie shoot em’ up ever released on Android? Well let’s not go that far yet, but it is definitely a lot of fun. With a whole assortment of guns ranging from your trusty handgun, to shotguns, and SMG’s, there will be plenty of zombies to kill.

The game is usually three bucks, and even if it wasn’t free, I would still consider picking it up seeing as how smooth it is. I have been playing on my XOOM, and haven’t had a single problem. Minus the fact that the zombie T-Rex keeps squashing me, it’s a great game. Controls are smooth, and the sound affects are raw.

Premise? A mad scientist has released his zombie army through a time machine into a whole array of different time periods. You have to travel back in time and stop them before they destroy the world as we know it! Not only is the plot genius, the dialogue is hysterical.

Can’t go wrong with giving this one a “shot”.

We recently posted about an application that was in the works called, “Rewind“. Soon after, we had a reader point out to us that an application called Frame Grabber did basically what Rewind was setting out to do. So we started the investigation and came to find out, that Frame Grabber is actually pretty awesome.

So when you open Frame Grabber, you’re on the title screen. You then click on a “Get Video” button which then shows you a list of all videos you have on your phone. I did not see an option to be taken to the camera from inside the application. So basically, instead of taking stills, you just take video, then grab which frame out of the video you think is best.

For the test I used a music video I had on my phone by a band called, Terror. For anyone who didn’t know I’m an avid metal fan. There’s a lot of fast sequences in this video which I would think could possibly make the app show me a bunch of fuzzy, out of focus pictures. I was actually surprised to see how good the quality of the pictures were, and even more happy to see how easy it was to use. Huge plus sign, and that was it. Stills get stored to your SD and you’re set to share the pictures however you want.

Application is available on the Market for $2.99 | Market Link

Cheers Lonnie!

Today we take a look at Cyberlords-Arcology. Cyberlords is an RPG style action game that is based in the year 2173. In a society void of citizen political input, we have Jesse Lord with his kick butt and chew bubble gum attitude. I’m pretty sure you guys can see where this is headed. I’ll admit that the dialogue is kind of cheesy but it delivers the plot and back story with little confusion. Where the game lacks in dialogue, it more than makes up in gameplay, graphics and fun factor. The controls are really accurate and quick to learn. Simple touch and do commands make this a “focused on the action” style game. The developer scored top marks in my book for his delivery of the game. In the Android Market, the full, all inclusive game is free with ads. You get near HD graphics, a good length story, and overall fun game for free without any in game add on purchases. The developer also offers a paid version that removes the ads, which I always recommend if you like the app, as a way to support. I also want to mention that the developer states he has optimized this game to run on the Xperia Play. If you have an Xperia Play, let us know how this looks on it.

From the developers listing:

It’s the year 2173. The power of government is in decline and the world is controlled by gigantic megacorporations. People may have no political power, but they still have control over their own bodies. Powerful NanoGear implants grant superhuman abilities and transform bodies into deadly weapons. Lead your four-man team of augmented cyber-warriors on dangerous infiltration missions. Hack into camera systems and computer terminals, take over security robots and lure enemies into ambushes with mines and sentry guns. Stealth, clever tactics or brute force – the choice is yours, and remember: the future lies in your hands!

Features:
- Science fiction RPG
- Real-time combat with 4 team members
- Tactics mode: pause the action at any time
- 4 levels of difficulty
- Improve your skills with biomechanical augmentations
- Over 20 different weapons including blades, guns, grenades and mines
- Specialise your team members in stealth, combat or hacking skills
- Many achievements to hunt
- Simulated persistent world

If you’re one of the millions of users on Photobucket, then prepare to smile. An application was just released called Snapbucket which allows you to take pictures then easily and instantly upload them to your Photobucket account. But that’s not all – You can also edit and add awesome effects, frames, and other little things to your pictures before uploading, or sharing them on Facebook, Twitter, e-mail, etc. I was actually having some great fun with my cats using the app, so I know it was worth the price tag. Free! After the jump, check out my cats Mylo, and Leo and our photoshoot.

If you own a tablet or plan on buying one in the near future, there is one app that I recommend you pick up immediately: Thumb Keyboard. To put it simply, this app makes typing on a big screened device so much easier than any other app on the planet and that includes Swiftkey’s Honeycomb keyboard. Thumb Keyboard allows you to quickly type while using only your thumbs, utilizes built-in themes for different looks, predicts with the best of them, and includes more customizable options to make it fit to your personal needs than any keyboard I’ve used. Oh, and they just introduced multi-touch in the latest update making it that much more impressive. Best $2.50 I’ve spent since buying my XOOM on day 1.

Market Link ($2.50)

*The Amazon Free app of the day is Pac-man.

Everyone enjoy their Memorial Day weekend? If you’re looking for a little bit of happiness to get you through the work day, Plants vs Zombies was released today on the Amazon App Store and in true Amazon fashion, made it the free paid app today. Normally it costs $2.99. That’s a whole lot of awesome. We knew this game was coming and was very highly anticipated.

The object of the game is to fend off the hoards of zombies that are approaching your front door. In this situation, I would probably prefer a minigun or a tactical nuclear weapon but seed spitting plants come in third on my list. So as the zombies approach, you capture drops of sunshine to help grow plants of all different kinds. You have shooter plants, sunflowers, cherry bombs, and more. Every plant has a sun value in order to grow the plant. When you capture enough sun drops you can place the plant where you think it will best serve. It’s an addicting process.

I’m hearing that on some tabs later levels are experiencing some lag and I’m not sure of the complete device availability as I am also hearing that the OG isn’t capable of running it stock. Let us know what device you have and your opinions on the game.

*Update: Possible work around for original DROID from a reader:

So I have an original Droid, and I decided to DL Plants vs. Zombies (free app of the day). It said my device is incompatible, so I found that if you go to the Amazon app store online & click get app, it will be saved to your app list (with an Incompatibility notice). After it’s on your app list, you WILL be able to download it to your device from the Amazon app store on your Droid. Also it takes up around 75mb & can be moved to SD. Hope this helps!

So we just got turned on to this sweet little photo uploading app called DropSnap, thanks our boy MrPicolas who found this in the market yesterday. The idea of the app is simple, but man is it something we’ve been waiting for as cloud sharing addicts. DropSnap allows you to automatically upload photos from your device straight to your DropBox account. By selecting a directory to monitor, DS knows almost instantly when you have taken or added a new photo and will then toss it straight up to DropBox. You can set up syncing options and times, notifications on uploads, and choose where you want the photos to go. We should point out that the automatic syncing comes with an in-app purchase of $3.99 though – without the upgrade it will simply notify you of new items to upload.

Market Link (Free with $3.99 in-app purchase)

*Today’s AAS of the day is Gaia GPS. The app is normally $9.99 and appears to be a pretty impressive outdoor GPS tracker. For those of you into hittin’ the trails on weekends, this might be worth a grab before it jumps back up to full price.

GhostTown is one of those apps that makes me say,”wow” pretty quickly. Within a few minutes of running this app, I started writing the review since I already knew it was going on the App Of The Day today. I’m one of the people that uses my phone as an mp3 player as well as a phone. I like music apps and have tried a lot of them. GhostTown does something that not many music apps do. For free. GhostTown lets you type in the name of any artist and play any song by that artist. There isn’t “you like this artist so try this artist” going on here. It’s straight forward. You can select any song you want, pause it, skip it, rewind it, repeat it, create playlists, and more. This literally is just like having, in the developer’s words, “an infinite playlist”. There is no limit to how many songs you play or how many times you skip songs. I’ll say it again. Any song. Any artist. No watered down lounge singer cover bands here. There are no monthly fees but a .99 cent in app purchase will remove ads. If you use your phone as a mobile jukebox, check this one out.

Monday, after reviewing Simple Text, I promised to bring an app that would add to the minimalistic arsenal, so I bring you Text Clock. As you can see above, Text Clock takes a unique approach to the time telling game. This is not a widget but instead runs as a live wallpaper and displays the time in text format. With the settings menu, you can customize the wallpaper with multiple color combinations and different positions. One of the features that caught my attention right away is how the clock reads minutes until hour along with minutes after hour. In other words, 4:46pm will read “fourteen minutes to five o’clock” or 8:20am is “twenty minutes past eight o’clock”. This may not seem groundbreaking but whenever you see time told this way, it just feels classy. And to top it off, this app uses very little battery. So grab this one up if you are into minimalistic text or if you are looking for that next great time app. There is a Lite version and a .99 cent version.
