As recent buyers of the Galaxy S4 on Verizon are receiving their devices, it’s about that time to start rooting and ROM’ing! If you are currently looking for the newest builds of the community’s most popular custom ROMs, you will be happy to learn that both Paranoid Android and AOKP have unofficial nightly and beta builds up for flashing. 

Both custom ROMs allow users to greatly customize the look of their device, as well the fact that they both get rid of Samsung’s TouchWiz interface. That might be reason enough to flash them. For a full list of features (the list would go on and on forever), check out the forum pages.

Builds of Paranoid Android and AOKP are up for Verizon’s Samsung Galaxy S4 is a post from: Droid Life

The new “milestone” release from the Android Open Kang Project (AOKP) is starting to roll out today. So far, we’re seeing builds available for most Nexus phones including toro (Verizon Galaxy Nexus), toroplus (Sprint Galaxy Nexus), mako (Nexus 4), and maguro (GSM Galaxy Nexus). We’re told that a post detailing the full changelog is in the works, but for now, you can expect changes to the nav/statusbar for tablets, “rewritten” RomControl, custom toggles, and a ton of bug fixes.

Update:  The announcement for this new milestone is live and includes a new release schedule for “builds.” In fact, the AOKP team is mostly referring to them as nightlies that will come out every four days going forward. There won’t be announcements for them, and they are mostly untested, so should you be willing to flash them, be sure to report back any issues. Also, milestone releases will likely happen on a monthly basis, assuming we get to a new month and the newest build is deserving of the “milestone” title.

And on a couple of related notes, AOKP has officially crossed the 1 million install milestone, which is quite the accomplishment. Last, they released an app called AOKPush [Play Link], so that you can keep track of all the latest builds.

This morning, the first AOKP build built off Android 4.2.2 has been uploaded and posted for everyone’s enjoyment. The build focuses mainly on bug fixes and a smooth merge from Android 4.2.1. Additionally, more devices such as the Motorola DROID 3, DROID 4, RAZR, and Bionic are also getting in on the Jelly Bean fun thanks to new maintainers, dhacker, Hashcode, and Quan. Good work, fellas!

First AOKP Build Running Off Android 4.2.2 is Up for Flashing is a post from: Droid Life

Custom ROM’s are still a large part of this community, with two of the top dogs being AOKP and Paranoid Android for a multitude of devices. If you are currently running one of their previous builds, then it looks like it is time to update.

Over the weekend, a release candidate for Paranoid Android 3+ was uploaded to XDA, along with an extremely awesome/in-depth hands-on video giving an overview of the ROM and its features such as hybrid property settings. These settings allow you to change the layout of the entire device and for individual apps. For example, you can use the tablet UI for the Gmail app if you so choose and any other app that is compatible. Definitely watch the video if you are prepared for your mind to be blown. 

As for AOKP, Build 3 of the JB-Mr1 ROM is up and ready for flashing. Inside there is a new UI mode selector, lockscreen options, and a ton of new options for the navigation bar. Yesterday, the AOKP team released JB-MR1 Build 2 for their many followers. Inside the newest build, which is built atop Android 4.2.1, are a ton of new features such as enhancements to the boot animation picker, custom NavBar background colors, and a brand new feature called Call Statistics. With Call Stats, you can get an in-depth look at phone usage such as filtering dates, pie charts showing incoming/outgoing usage, and more.

AOKP JB-MR1 Build 2 Released, Fancy Call Stats Feature Baked In is a post from: Droid Life

Late last night, the AOKP team finally dropped their first release as MR1 for Jelly Bean (Android 4.2.1). As you had probably hoped, it contains many of your favorite features from past builds.

You’ll find the custom boot animation, statusbar tweaks, power menu options, custom lockscreen options, a fully customizable navigation bar, more statusbar styles, LED control, sound settings, and more. And maybe more importantly, they fixed some of the bugs that came with stock Android 4.2.1. 

The Galaxy Nexus builds ship with LeanKernel 5.4.0. Builds for the Nexus 4 and 7 ship with the stock kernel from Google. And yes, as of now, AOKP MR1 is only available on the LTE and GSM G-Nex, Nexus 4 and Nexus 7. Galaxy S3 and Note 2 builds are expected to be included in the next release.

Update:  It looks like the Rezound has a new build today as well.

To flash, you definitely need to fully wipe beforehand.

AOKP Team Finally Releases Android 4.2.1 MR1 to the Galaxy Nexus and Others is a post from: Droid Life

Oh, the Internet. It’s a fun and beautiful place for the most part, but sometimes, it can be a real pain in the ass. Unfortunately for our friends in the Android Open Kang Project, their forum (aokpDOTco) has come down with an illness, malware to be exact, and all of their user’s usernames and passwords have been compromised. AOKP’s founder, Roman, took to Google+ to break the bad news and to advise people who signed up that this would be a good time to change up your passwords.

Yesterday we got reports of http://aokp.co being infected with malware. We did some investigation and it looks like our site did get compromised by some sort of malware.

All usernames and passwords were compromised.

Yes, this sucks, and I take 100% of the responsibility for what happened. I am very sorry to everyone who registered on the site. The silver lining of the event is that site registrations have been closed for many months as it is, and we’ve been using RootzWiki as our main “forum.” I will see what I can do about sending an email to all of the registered users and notify them of the incident.

It looks like only the actual site (http://aokp.co) was affected – gerrit and everything else was untouched. I’ve taken the site down completely for now. You can still get your builds from AndroTransfer or Goo-Inside.me.

Please please please change your passwords and remember to keep your email password just a little more secure! If you used the same email/password combo elsewhere, now would be the time to go and change it as well.

AOKP Forum Infected With Malware, All Usernames and Passwords Compromised is a post from: Droid Life

Last night, the AOKP team announced that Build 5 was ready for the masses, bringing with it a ton of new features and the successful merge of Android 4.1.2. On top of the merge, features ranging from custom nav bar options for tablet users, NavBar widgets have returned, as well as a toggle for menu UI overflow. AOKP Build 5 Now Up, Custom Nav Bar for Tablets and a Whole Lot More is a post from: Droid Life

In a matter of days, fans of the Android Open Kang Project will never have to worry if they’re running the latest build or not. Kangerator, created by member adamthecashew of their development team, is an app that will list all current builds with release logs right on your phone. No more searching forums and trying to find which builds are the right ones for your select device.

Update: The application is now live in Google Play. Go grab it.

The application is set to hit Google Play within the next day or so and we’ll update the post and let you know when you can grab it as soon as it drops.

AOKP’s Kangerator App Will Make Sure You Have the Newest Build Available (Update) is a post from: Droid Life

Just moments ago, the AOKP team released Build 3 of their popular ROM for the consumption of the masses. A changelog is yet to be posted, but once it is, we’ll update the post. The team has added a few newly supported devices such as the crespo4g, i9100, i9100g, i9300, and toroplus. Unfortunately, users of wingray/stingray devices will no longer receive builds due to lack of a maintainer.

Just under a month ago, the AOKP team released their first stable build of Jelly Bean. As expected, it was a hit. But one of the draws to AOKP over the last year, has been the massive list of extra features that were initially missing from build 1. To flash the latest build, you will need to find your specific device’s file at one of the links below. Once found, drop it and the latest Gapps package on your device’s internal storage. Boot into recovery, create a backup, wipe data and cache, and flash both files.

Oh, those crazy developers. If you have flashed the newest build of AOKP, then just like the official Jelly Bean build from Google, you can find some amusing Easter Egg fun. Under Settings, tap rapidly on “AOKP verison” which will bring up a flashy picture of a majestic unicorn. Long press on the unicorn and boom, tons of floating multi-colored unicorn heads for you to play around with.

Android Open Kang Project’s First Official Jelly Bean Build Released, Flashers Rejoice (Update) is a post from: Droid Life

Things have been a little quiet on the AOKP front, but yesterday the group took to Google+ to assure their fans that they have not disappeared and that things were coming on the horizon. First things first, the team addressed the issue of their next official build of AOKP, based on Jelly Bean:

First, a ‘build’ is coming.  We’re getting very close to an official, non-nightly JB build.  Just throwing that out there with no ETA to let you know that it is a real thing that will happen, pretty soon.

“Pretty soon” sounds good to us, so we will sit tight and wait using their nightlies until things get more official. Secondly, the team announced a new IRC channel, #aokp-support, for any problems that you may have with the ROM. Even better still, the AOKP team says that there is a reworking of their website underway. It is promised to make the whole experience better and more streamlined.

Lastly, there is a call for device maintainers after their new build comes out. If you’re a developer looking to get in on the AOKP team and help to maintain and code for a certain device, the team has a checklist of what you need in their post.

AOKP Gives State of the Union, Official Jelly Bean Build Coming ‘Soon’ is a post from: Droid Life

Developer nize2beme uploaded a port of AOKP for the Nexus 7 to the forums at RootzWiki last night. So far, this is a very early alpha build and in order to get it booted up and running, he says he needed to take pieces of code from the newest CM10 source. At the moment, the developer is looking to get it up and running with more stability, then will add custom features such as a tablet mode tweak and all of the other battery mods and other AOKP customizations.

If your Nexus 7 is unlocked, rooted, and running a custom recovery, then feel free to give it a go. Be sure to make a backup.
