DROID DNA Receiving Update to Android 4.2.2 and Sense 5, Here is the Massive 5-Page Changelog

Remember back in September when we found the massive changelog to an update for the DROID DNA that detailed out its receiving of Android 4.2.2 and Sense 5? We still aren’t sure why it needed a four month delay to finally arrive if it was seemingly ready back then, but it actually is officially ready now. Verizon posted up the support documents for the update this morning as build 3.06.605.4. As you can imagine in a jump to 4.2.2 and HTC’s Sense 5, which is an overhaul of their Android skin, the changelog is significant (5 pages to be exact).  (more…)

Minor DROID DNA Update Approved by Verizon, is Not the 4.2.2 Mega-update

Remember the massive Android 4.2.2 update for the DROID DNA that Verizon detailed for us back in September yet never arrived? Well, Verizon has finally approved an update for the device, but it’s not that one. Instead, users will receive a 33MB update to software version 2.07.605.1 710RD, which only adds support for TalkBack. That’s it. No Android 4.2.2 or Sense 5 this time around.

Verizon updated their DROID DNA support page recently, detailing a yet-to-be-announced software update that will include Android 4.2 and Sense 5. In the support page, we are seeing evidence of the arrival of BlinkFeed, a new gallery app with video highlights, new 4.2 quick toggles in the notification bar, smart dialer, updated People app, and a new calendar. This update helps bring your DNA into HTC One software territory, you just can’t snap Zoes.  (more…)

HTC President: Android 4.3 Coming to One and DNA by End of September

htc one google play edition

According to Jason Mackenzie, HTC’s president of global sales, the HTC One and DROID DNA will receive Android 4.3 before the end of September. We have recently seen the international HTC One receive Android 4.2.2, but Mackenzie also confirmed this weekend that the U.S. version will likely skip right to 4.3 since 4.2.2 was so minor.

I wouldn’t say we are surprised at all by this, as HTC seems to be attempting to update phones as fast as possible these days, but it was nice to see the DNA name-dropped in there. Launched at the end of last year as HTC’s flagship for Verizon, we feel as if it gets neglected from time to time.

Verizon Drops the DROID DNA to $50

Even with the HTC One appearing today in its first press render, we still don’t have a firm date on its launch at Verizon stores other than “later this summer.” What we do have are a few signs that the DROID DNA is on its way out the door, which as you know, is the phone that most expect the One to replace. A couple of weeks ago we received a tip that authorized Verizon resellers had moved the DNA to “closeout” status, and that once stores ran out of inventory, that they wouldn’t receive new stock. The point – to clear out remaining inventory to make room for the One.  (more…)

Verizon is Closing Out Inventory of the DROID DNA in Anticipation of the HTC One

With summer upon us,  and Verizon having acknowledged that it will carry the HTC One “later” this season, we’ve been told that stores are now running promos for sales reps to move remaining inventory of the DROID DNA and Incredible 4G LTE. In fact, both phones have been flagged for “close out” within the last day or so (pictured above). Once the last device is sold, stores (at least of the 3rd party variety) will no longer stock either device to make room for something new, likely the One. A firm launch date for the HTC One on Verizon has yet to be revealed.  (more…)

HTC Announces the Butterfly S – Like a Slightly Better One, Without the Terrible Button Setup

Screen Shot 2013-06-19 at 7.32.41 AM

Last night, HTC unveiled their newest flagship in Taiwan, dubbed the Butterfly S. The device is every bit as good on paper as the HTC One, but one could argue that it’s an even better phone thanks to additions in some key areas. Keep in mind that the device will likely never reach our shores, at least as the Butterfly S. You never know if we’ll see it re-branded as something else though, just like we saw last year with the J Butterfly blossoming into the DROID DNA on Verizon.  (more…)

DROID DNA and HTC One S-OFF Tools Available

DNA buttons

On Friday, both the HTC One and DROID DNA received tools that provided each device with S-OFF. Yes, finally after all these months, the DROID DNA has been conquered. There are a couple of tools available, one called Moonshine that requires Linux, and another called Revone that can be used on any operating system. Revone is still being pushed as a “developer early access preview,” so there are likely going to be bugs or issues along the way. If you don’t want to deal with potential issues, feel free to try Moonshine. If you don’t have Linux, know that we had a reader toss Ubuntu on a USB drive to use the tool and was able to finish the entire process in under 30 minutes. You can do it, young one.

Plenty of links below for each, so get to unlocking.  (more…)
