When I took my first glance at the Keyprop on Kickstarter, I’ve got to admit that I initially laughed it off as another silly Kickstarter smartphone-related campaign that I’d probably never think about again. But for some reason, I found myself watching the promo video for it, then looking at the pictures in the posting, saw the use cases, and then couldn’t help but hope it was reasonably priced. Thankfully, it was because this is actually something I could see being pretty useful in a pinch or even on a regular basis.

Keyprop is a smartphone stand that comes in a variety of colors and fits easily onto your keychange, disguising itself as nothing but another key. It runs $15, and should work on almost any smartphone including the Galaxy S3 and Nexus 4 (iPhones too). The tip of the key has a couple of notches that can either fit inside the charging port of your device or the headphone jack, which helps it stabilize your device in an upright position. You can even adjust your keyring to provide other angles for better viewing. Seriously, it’s kind of brilliant.

It has 8 days to go still and is about 60% funded, so there is no guarantee that this will happen. But for those looking for an always-with-them smartphone stand, give it a view.

Kickstarter seems to be the number one choice for upstarts with a smartwatch in mind to seek funding these days. Agent “the world’s smartest watch” is the latest in a long line that includes tech darlings like the Pebble. And actually, this new Agent watch seems like nothing more than a thicker (and potentially uglier depending on your taste in watch designs) version of the Pebble, but with one difference – it has Qi wireless charging built in. The promo video shows a watch with a “Memory” display that’s a combination of an e-paper and LCD displays, that can be paired with your phone and used to tell the time, show weather, control music players, act as a pedometer, and show you incoming calls or messages.

After watching the promo video we have included below, I’m sure you’ll understand why we are drawing the Pebble comparisons.

The creators of the Agent also teamed up with a watchmaker to come up with the design, which again is…interesting. Contrast stitching in 2013? OK. How thick is this bad boy? We heard comments from readers who thought the Pebble was oversized, so I can’t imagine what they’ll think of this one.

If you’d like to back this project, the early bird special will run you $129, but will jump up to $149 afterwards. See any reason to pick this over the Pebble? I don’t.

An Android 4.2.2 build that features Sense 5.1 has leaked for the HTC Butterfly. The entire dump is actually available for download if you’d like to start playing around with it. I know I’m curious to see if devs can do anything with it for the HTC One and DROID DNA (brother phone of the Butterfly), though there are no guarantees that that will happen.

In this new build, the Android version is blocked, but you can tell from the secondary notification shade with quick toggles that it’s at least 4.2. In HTC’s version of the toggle panel, we’re seeing a quick setting for brightness along with the standard shortcut for Settings. After that, you have WiFi, Bluetooth, Airplane mode, Power Saver, Auto Rotate, Data, Sound profiles, Hotspot, and Screenshot shortcuts. Other than this panel, it’s tough to tell what other things differ from the current Sense 5.0 and Android 4.1.2. Will we get lock screen widgets? With notifications handle better with one-finger swipes? This is one of those situations where the video below isn’t giving us all of the answers, so we’ll have to see what devs can come up with.

If anything, this should at least mean that a 4.2.2 update with new Sense is on the way to the DNA, though we’d be surprised if that landed before 4.2.2 for the One.

Runners and Pebble owners, the time has come for your new smartwatch to become a legitimate option as your running partner. Runkeeper updated this morning to include official support for the darling of Kickstarter, bringing real activity functionality to the watch that has for the most part been lacking since launch. In order to utilize Pebble with Runkeeper, all you need to do is pair your Pebble to your smartphone, update to the newest Runkeeper, and launch a new activity. Once launched, your Pebble should automatically display your progress (image above).

Along with Pebble support, Runkeeper now has a widget for both your lock screen and home screens. You can start, pause, and stop activities without having to unlock your phone or fully launch the app, assuming you are running Android 4.2+.

Go get it!

We came across a new launcher today titled, Splay Launcher. It is still in beta, but the app does seem very polished and could interest some folks who are tired of the same ol’ look on their smartphone.

Navigation throughout your device is handled with a swipe down of your finger on the homescreen, allowing you to access apps through parent shortcuts labeled Phone, Diary (email, texts, calendar), Media, and Apps. Each parent label, once hovered over, gives birth to smaller labels which act as shortcuts to apps and device functions.

Below I give it a whirl on the Galaxy S4, so check it out and let us know what you think. Keep in mind it is beta, but it is nice. Although, if you are a widget lover, you might as well keep on moving.

Since Samsung packed all sorts of new software features into this device, we probably could have made this 50+, but 20 or so seemed like the right amount.

Throughout this 14-minute long clip, we’ll show you how to use features like Air View, Air Gesture (and how to turn them on and off), managing quick toggles, jumping in and out of the camera quickly, enabling lock screen widgets, answering calls without touching your phone, and more. There are also some basic navigation and general Android tips in there for those of you who made the Galaxy S4 your first smartphone.

Also, be sure to drop tips of your own in the comments.

“Wait, teal green notification!” – grabs neck and begins to perspire, “only 150 likes on my newest head-cocked-to-the-side, shirtless Instagram post? Something is wrong here,” mumbles the young teenager. “It’s OK,” replies Tiffany, “I’ll get my L4L brigade on it in 30 seconds, but I have to pee like nobody’s business.” The young teenager then thinks to himself as he closes his eyes, and drops thumbs-only into his jeans,”Zen-mode time, baby. Life couldn’t be more peaceful now that my wrist is blinking in neon colors and Tiffany has cleared her bladder. #teambreezy” The story of two EMBRACE+ customers, in love. The end.

Ready for a world filled with glowstick-esque blinking notifications? EMBRACE+ wants you to be. This product is a re-launch of a previously failed attempt at bringing wrist notifications to the mainstream. As you can see from the pictures above, and an excerpt from the next great novel, you’ll soon be able to set up calls, texts, Facebook messages, Instagram pings, and other notifications to appear in any shade of color through a Nike Fuelband type of rubber wrist accessory.

The EMBRACE+ works with both Android and iOS, lasts for up to 10 days on a single charge, is fully waterproof, and can be yours for just $50.

Look, this thing is just plain silly, if you ask me. But hey, clearly there is some sort of a market for it, as it already has more than 1,800 backers in around 10 days. I’m just not so sure I’m ready for a world where completely intrusive blinking lights are flooding my conversations, meals, and meetings. Then again, Google Glass is out there too.

Our previous review of the HTC One was an international model, running on AT&T’s network. We have now had an official U.S. model running on Sprint for the past week, so we felt it appropriate to go back and basically summarize our opinions for this device. We also felt it necessary to give a second opinion on it, since you know that no two persons are truly alike. It’s time for Tato’s take on the HTC One.

Before we begin, I should point out that the one downfall to this device is the fact that I don’t live in an area supported by Sprint’s 4G LTE, so the device is rather handicapped in that regard. Nevertheless, if you are still on the fence about picking up HTC’s 2013 flagship over any other device, read on.

The Good

Hardware

When looking at the device’s specs on paper, they definitely stand out in your average crowd of devices. The One features a 4.7″ 1080p display with 468ppi, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 2,300mAh non-removable battery, 4G LTE connectivity (where supported), an IR blaster for use as a remote, and comes packed with the future standard of WiFi, 802.11ac. Each one of these specs is packed inside a single piece of aluminum casing that gives off a smooth and hardened feel when handled. Possibly tied for the top spot with the One X, this is the nicest Android phone I have ever touched. It gives off just the right amount of weight, not so much to where you would call it heavy, but the perfect amount to know the device is solid and well constructed.

Camera

The camera on the HTC One has been the source of many questions, given that it runs a single 4MP sensor. How could HTC put a lowly 4MP camera in their 2013 flagship against Samsung’s 13MP monster? In short without getting all scientific (since I know little about real cameras), it actually works well for this device and in the right circumstances, it works extremely well. When on a stroll through the park or inside the house, the One produces very good quality pictures, full of detail and crisp lines. You can tell that the Ultrapixel does let in good amounts of light, but it never makes a photo turn out bad by any means. The one true downside I noticed with the One’s camera is that if you zoom in beyond 45% or more, your picture will come out looking blurred and nasty. To sum up the camera, if you upload photos to Facebook and Instagram on a regular basis, it will treat you just fine.

Click each image for full resolution.

BoomSound

If there was one feature that I showed off about this phone the most, it was BoomSound. The front facing speakers on this device sound fantastic with any type of music I played through them. I’m more of a rock/metal kind of guy and they had no issues balancing the right amount of highs and lows. While playing more bass-heavy tunes, the sounds were handled just fine and it was actually a pleasure to listen to music through. To say your phone has amazing external speakers is almost unheard of, so having BoomSound is a major advantage for anyone that loves watching media on their device or listening to music. Kellen mentioned in his review that we have never talked about the speaker experience on a phone before and that should give everyone a clue just how highly we think of them.

BlinkFeed

Kellen mostly avoided talking about BlinkFeed in his review, given that he didn’t use it all that much (until he changed his mind recently). The thing is, like he mentions, HTC sort of forces you into using it, as it is a part of your homescreen. There is no disabling it. So, I placed some basic feeds in there from car blogs and science blogs, and I actually found it somewhat useful. What I do like about it is that I am a very visual guy, so when I see the big and bright pretty pictures, I’m able to simply click on them and be taken to the story. It’s a no fuss experience. Plus, since you can add calendar events and even Twitter feeds, it’s just a simple way of staying up-to-date on everything that is going on.

The Not-so-Good

Carrier

The HTC One that I have is on Sprint’s network and where I live, Sprint is pretty poor in terms of data speeds and mobile coverage. Like, really poor. Their service is so inconsistent that when I take my phone out with me, I have no idea if I’m going to a mobile dead zone when I leave my house. For example, I was with a friend at a restaurant in the middle of town and I couldn’t even send out a tweet. The phone showed I had 3/4 bars full of “3G” service, yet I couldn’t even send a tweet. When your device is rendered useless because of the network it’s on, that is sort of inexcusable for me. If Sprint has good coverage in your area, then hopefully your experience will differ greatly from mine. I noticed that when the device showed it was on “4G,” it worked just fine, but when on “3G” don’t plan on doing any streaming, Tweeting, or Facebook’ing.

Parts of Sense 5

While the overall look of the Sense UI has improved greatly over the years, there are some parts of Sense 5 that are just awful. On stock Android, it takes just a single click to access the option if you want to choose a wallpaper, but on here, the option is hidden inside the settings menu. You have to drag the notification bar down, hit settings, find Personalize, hit wallpaper, then you can choose what you want to do. If you long press the homescreen on Sense 5, you can change widgets, add a homescreen, add shortcuts, but not even change the wallpaper. Why is that? It just seems overly complicated and unnecessary. To add to my frustrations with Sense, another key feature of Jelly Bean, expandable notifications, is not done properly.

In stock Android, your top notification tends to always be expanded while the older ones collapse automatically. With Sense 5, they are always collapsed and never auto expand, forcing you to always two-finger swipe down on them. Unfortunately, the gesture isn’t all that smooth and I sometimes have to swipe three times for it to work. As Kellen put it, “dealing with notifications went from being an amazing new experience, to completely painful.”

Buttons

Navigation on the HTC One is sort of funky and to be honest, I couldn’t even find the recent apps function until just a couple of days ago. You access features with different long presses and double taps which is just crazy in my opinion. You long press the home button to access Google Now and you double tap home to bring up recent apps. And of course, that huge HTC logo doesn’t do anything at all. I am all for OEMs differentiating themselves from the competition, but it would be nice to soon have a standard from Google that says manufacturers must use on-screen buttons. That would be nice.

Verdict

I believe it was on this week’s Droid Life Show when I said the HTC One is the – Best. Smartphone. Ever. I think a part of me truly does feel that way, but at the same time there a few things I would have changed. Stop making Sense so confusing, throw in a beefy 8MP or 13MP camera without the Ultrapixel marketing gimmickry, and get it onto Verizon’s network. At the end of the day, this is currently my favorite Android smartphone of all time, so that does count for something. It is an absolute dream to feel in the hands and the device is extremely pleasing to look at. It’s the ultimate sensory-pleasing package of a phone. If you are shopping for a new Android phone, you have to check out the One from HTC.

One of the most popular Android widget applications of all time, Beautiful Widgets, is now available as a free app on Google Play. This new free version is a bare-bones edition that allows you to pick and choose the options or themes you want. As you find something that looks interesting, you can decide to buy it out-right. The folks at LevelUp Studio even bundled some of the options into packs, but you can buy pieces individually as well. Should you decide that you don’t want to spend countless amounts of cash on individual packs, you can always upgrade to the Pro version, which is the new name of the original Beautiful Widgets.

Sorry for the wait, but here are the answers to Volume 12 of the Droid Life Q&A Sessions. We answered a few on last week’s show, so if you’re looking for even more personal thoughts from us on some of your inquiries, then be sure to watch that.

There seems to be a lot of people curious as to what we can see at this year’s Google I/O. To be completely honest, that is what makes it such a great event. We go in, thinking we have some good clues as to what we can see, and then Google always surprises us with new goodies. It is always the numero uno Android event of the year.

There is a good handful of other topics discussed inside, such as our favorite smartphone cameras, which apps we use the most, as well as which features we might like to see kanged from various OEM skins and baked into Android. But enough talking, let’s get to it.

Reminder: K is Kellen, T is Tato, R is Ron, and E is Eric.

What features would you like to see “stolen” from various OEM skins (Sense, TouchWiz, Blur) and baked into future iterations of Android?

R: I’d like to see SmartActions from Motorola and the flippy clock widget from HTC.

T: As far as features go, the only thing I would want taken from various skins are some of the camera software from TouchWiz and Sense. Other than that, I don’t find anything found in them to be useful or necessary. Although, I could see the multi-window stuff being useful from time to time, but when I was using the Galaxy Note 2, I used it rarely.

K: Take Highlights from Sense 5.0 on the One and give to every other phone. Better yet, just take all of the camera software from HTC and make it available to all phones. Samsung does some similar stuff in TouchWiz with the camera, but HTC does it so much more elegantly.

How much do you enjoy/hate the fanboy vs troll battles that erupt in the comments at times?

R: It used to bother me more. The reality is, everyone has an opinion about smartphones and technology, but there are more important things to care about. I’m passionate about technology, but I don’t want to find my value in whether or not people like or agree with me.

T: I find it disheartening that people can be so unreasonable in allowing a person to live however they choose. Our reality of freedom to do as we choose and buy as we choose is continuously questioned by others and it is at times frustrating to say the least. I am pretty sure I have never and will never give someone a hard time for buying a certain kind of smartphone. Instead, isn’t there something more important we can talk about?

E: It happens, that’s why we’re all reading this website. We love our Android. The fights between the Galaxy Note II Cult and the X Phone cult is just banter. We’re all on the same side here and if the time comes that we need to join the tribes together to go to war, I’m sure everyone will answer the call.

Final predictions for Google I/O?

R: Gmail redesign for Android, Nexus Q2, Babel (#BaybelCult), Now on the desktop, showing off more Google Glass, and…

T: Google Glass. Google Glass. Google Glass. I am almost certain that everyone that is to take the stage at I/O will be rocking Glass. Other than that, I expect to see a new Nexus 7, a new version of Android, redesigned Gmail application for Android, Google Babel, and a new version of Google Music. Please and thank you, Google.

K: I think we’re going to be overwhelmed by Glass. There will be Glass everywhere. Sure, Android will have its place with Babel and other new Google Now features, but Sergey will be in the building trying to sell every developer and media person on Glass.

E: Babel (BAYBEL), sneak peek of Android 5.0, lots of Google Glass, revamp of the Nexus Q and they’ll make it into a Google TV device.

Do you think the Nexus 7 and the Nexus 10 will be upgraded/refreshed any time soon?

R: Maybe the 7. The 10 might not be refreshed until the end of the year.

T: The Nexus 7 was the first vanilla Android tablet to really take off. If they don’t introduce a new version with updated specs, they’re shooting themselves in the foot. I couldn’t care less about a new Nexus 10 device, since the size alone turns me away. I like more easily portable devices.

K: I would be surprised if Google didn’t refresh the Nexus 7 at I/O in 2 weeks. The Nexus 10 on the other hand, is still too new to already pump out something new, unless they create an HSPA+ version to be sold next to the WiFi model. I doubt we’ll see a completely new Nexus 10, though.

E: Nexus 7 will be getting new specs at I/O this year, but the 10 hasn’t been out for too long so I’m not sure about that one.

What is your favorite food/meal?

R: I grew up with a Pizza Hut right behind my house when I lived in Michigan, so surprisingly I love a good pizza (usually not from Pizza Hut).

T: Well, my yearly birthday dinner consists of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and Brussels sprouts with bacon. If I’m going out, it’s all about the steak dinners with a nice gin cocktail on the side or a fabulous big bacon burger.

K: I have an addiction to fine steakhouses and premium burgers. Burgers are always going to be king between the two. I’ve had just about every burger worth having in the city of Portland. The Tasty Burger from Tasty N’ Sons is probably top 3, as is the burger from Gruner. If you want something simple and cheap that’s also insanely good, you can’t go wrong with Little Big Burger (and their damn good truffle fries).

E: Cheesecake and I have a bond that is impossible to put into written words.

What app do you use the most?

R: Evernote, Email, or Twitter. Depends on the day.

T: I am on Instagram quite often these days, but technically I should say Nova Launcher since it is on all of my phones by default. Beyond that, I am a Gtalk addict and Gmail fiend.

K: If we aren’t counting Google apps, I’d say Instagram and Feedly or Press. For work, I need to check RSS feeds religiously, but to kill time and not have to think about a thing, Instagram is my vice.

E: Still rocking the Twitter for Android. Haters gonna hate.

What’s your favorite smartphone camera?

R: I haven’t tried the HTC One or the GS4, so I really can’t say. What I will say is this new obsession with low-light photos from manufacturers like Nokia and HTC needs to be worked on quite a bit more. The HTC 8X, for example, takes in more light than the average smartphone camera, but a light source also tends to get blown out of proportion. I preferred the last generation of cameras (like on the S3) to this current crop that I’ve spent time with.

T: Last year it was the HTC One X, then it was the Galaxy Note 2. Now, and don’t shoot me, but it’s the HTC One. Talk about the pinnacle of Instagram-friendly cameras. I absolutely love it. And please, don’t talk about megapixels to me. The cake is an absolute lie.

K: Tough question since they all have downsides. HTC One camera is the most flexible, but the Galaxy S4′s camera takes pretty amazing pictures in great light. Neither have Photosphere though, like the Nexus 4. Hmm, it’s just not so black and white like it was when you jumped from the OG Droid to the Incredible. Anyone remember that experience? I’m a terrible person – I really don’t have a favorite.

E: Well I’ve had the Galaxy Nexus camera for the last year and a half which is probably one of the worst cameras ever put into a phone, so the One X camera that I’m using now is a Godsend.

Lock screen widgets, one of our favorite features of Android 4.2, are indeed included on the Samsung Galaxy S4. Yes, that means all the DashClock you can handle on Sammy’s latest flagship device. Unfortunately, the process of getting them setup isn’t the easiest unless you know exactly what to look for. Out of the box, Samsung has actually disabled lock screen widgets in a sense, but with a couple of taps through Settings, you can get your device up and running them in no time.

In the video below, we take you on a detailed tour of Samsung’s take on lock screen widgets. It can be a bit finicky at times, to say the least, but once you get the hang of them, we think you’ll enjoy widgets at phone wake just as much as the rest of us who live and die with Nexus devices, do.

Update: Reader Kevin pointed out that with a secure lock screen enabled (like pattern or PIN), you are unable to use lock screen widgets. The options to turn them off completely disappear should you go with a secure lock screen. This is unfortunate, especially since stock Android allows you to utilize lock screen widgets with a pattern or PIN.
