Over the weekend, owners of the XOOM WiFi began to have their tablets updated to Android 4.1.2. If waiting for the roll out to make its way to your tablet is not in the cards, then the OTA update file has been made available for both stock and rooted users.

For starters, if you still haven’t received the OTA, you can try the trick of going into Settings and Apps menu and clearing the Google Framework Services data, then checking to see if there’s an update. If you’ve tried that and still no luck, you can download the official OTA file straight from Google’s servers here. If you need instructions on how to apply the update, we have some written on this post.

If you live dangerously and your XOOM is rooted, a rooted version of the OTA has been made available on XDA and you can find instructions below by following the via link.

The owner of a developer edition of Verizon’s Motorola XOOM 4G LTE has been pushed the official Jelly Bean update and has decided to make it available for all. The large file is flashed through ClockworkMod Recovery so having a rooted XOOM is a must. The zip is a nandroid backup, so essentially this is exactly what happened when the GSM Galaxy Nexus was pushed Jelly Bean, which was then ported to every other device in existence.

Proceed at your own risk. You must be rooted and running ClockworkMod Recovery for this to work.

Instructions to flash:

Download the JB.RAR file.

Extract contents and place under the “/clockworkmod/backup/” directory on your device’s storage.

In ClockworkMod, locate the “2012-08-02.23.36.52″ file in the backup menu of CWM.

Hit “restore.”

Reboot and enjoy.

There you go. Official Jelly Bean on your Motorola XOOM 4G LTE. If you have any questions or run into issues, let us know and we’ll try to field them. If you have questions regarding the build, you can find more information in the original thread by following the via.

If you think waiting for the official Jelly Bean roll out to the Motorola XOOM WiFi is too much (Google says it is coming), then you can go ahead and download this AOSP ROM. Developers over at XDA are beginning to port Android 4.1.1 to the first Android tablet and so far, it’s holding up nicely. Development continues as they work out bugs and what not, but it’s already pretty stable. If you want to try it out on your XOOM, feel free to follow the via down below.

As for when to expect official JB to arrive, we can expect Google to be pretty quick on an update now that 4.1.1 source has touched down. They mentioned the XOOM during the announced of 4.1, along with the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S.

Recently, the CyanogenMod team released CM9 nightlies for the Motorola XOOM 4G. For owners of the world’s first 4G LTE tablet, this may come as a huge upgrade, seeing as how Verizon is still having troubles pushing the official Ice Cream Sandwich update to your device. CM9 will bring ICS, a ton of customizable options, and the relief that your device will finally receive the updates and developer support it so deserves.

In order to flash CM9, you will need to have unlocked your bootloader (adb knowledge required) and rooted your tablet. From there, it is as simple as just flashing a zip file. For those of you who are daring enough to take the leap into the custom ROM world with the XOOM 4G, follow the rabbit hole down below at the via link.

For all of our friends who are impatient, you can grab the download link just below and enjoy ICS today!

For installation, you will need to be rooted with a custom recovery installed that will allow users to flash custom zips.
We all knew that Motorola was cooking something up for XOOM users of their Feedback Network but we did not know it was going to be this big. The “project” that Motorola had in mind for the members of their network is an update to Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich. The update has already started rolling out to members of the group last night and the community has been all over it. It is good to see a “Google Experience Device” getting the update finally and depending on how well this rollout goes, Moto could be looking to push this out to a wider swath of XOOM users fairly soon.

Solnarz, one of the main minds behind Tiamat which is one of the best known XOOM ROMs, released a .zip soon after news broke that this update was out in the wild. The .zip contains the official OTA in it’s entirety but there is a catch; you must be stock and non-rooted to flash it. This means if you are rooted running a ROM, you will need to downgrade to Honeycomb HTK75D before applying this update.zip. Keep in mind as well, this update is meant for US WiFi XOOMs, anything other than that is risking it. If you are already stock and un-rooted on Honeycomb than this should be an easy install for you; just drop it onto your SDcard and then install via recovery. Any XOOM users going to have a crack at this?

UPDATE: How to flash Clockwork Recovery to your stock XOOM

My apologies on this one, it has been so long since I dealt with the stock XOOM recovery I forgot that it had no update.zip flashing capability so here is a quick walkthrough on how to install Clockwork Recovery to your device to allow you to update to Ice Cream Sandwich. This requires no root and should have no bearing on the installation of today’s update.zip.

Instructions:

1. Download the recovery file image HERE.
2. Move the image file over to wherever your adb and fastboot files are set up in your computer.
3. Connect your XOOM via USB cable.
4. In your command prompt, type the following (fill in the XXXX’s with the name of the image)

adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash recovery recovery-solarnz-XXXXXX-XXXX.img
fastboot reboot

5. Let your XOOM reboot and your new recovery should be installed. To boot back into recovery you can type the following into your command prompt

adb reboot recovery

6. Now that you have your Clockwork Recovery installed just drop the ICS update.zip onto your SDcard, boot into recovery and select the “update.zip” function. Your XOOM should take care of the rest!

The Motorola XOOM may not be the best tablet on the market, but it is Google’s developer tablet, that means that it was the likely candidate for getting the bump to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich first. While nothing official has been released yet, the Android developer community jumped when they saw that the source for 4.0.3 included support for the XOOM’s kernel. What you see is an almost fully working compilation of ICS for the XOOM. And let me tell you, it is like a whole new tablet.

Installation is pretty easy provided that you have a rooted/unlocked XOOM already. There are two files that need to be downloaded, the AOSP ROM itself and then the Google Apps file that will work with ICS. Once you have both of those loaded on your SDcard it’s as easy as booting into recovery, making a backup, wiping your system and then flashing the two files. The XDA link below has the download for both of those files you need.

The ROM is not fully complete, but the few things that do not work are small ones. Netflix will load but video playback will give a blackscreen while audio plays in the background. The camera is broken (not surprised by that), calendars don’t seem to want to sync, and there have been reports of the gyroscope being off by 90 degrees when playing games. But if you want to get a taste of Google’s latest on the tablet, I would highly suggest checking it out. The XOOM runs like it never has before after ICS. If you would like to wait for a more stable ROM though, Team Tiamat has just put out links for their WiFi XOOM ICS nightly builds. Within a few weeks there should be a complete update for the XOOM if not an official one. Happy flashing folks.

File this one under the “obvious” tab. Reports are out that Motorola’s XOOM will be the first tablet to receive Ice Cream Sandwich, Google’s next update to their Android operating system. There is no definitive ETA on this update, since ICS itself will not be announced until tomorrow, but this seems to be a pretty safe bet.

You could attribute this to Google’s acquisition of Motorola, or you could remember that Android 3.0 Honeycomb was developed on the XOOM as their flagship tablet. It only seems logical that Google would use the XOOM for their next operating system that involved any kind of tablet, which ICS is supposed to do. Some XOOM users are just getting theirs back, newly upgraded with 4G LTE on board, how nice would it be if you could upgrade to ICS pretty soon?

3.2 is said to bring Honeycomb functionality to tablets with smaller screens, so beyond that, we don’t exactly know how it will affect the XOOM. Guess we’ll all find out sooner, rather than later.

Could this be the start of something great? The first deodexed XOOM ROM by Team Tiamat has arrived. The team states almost all XOOMs can flash the ROM (yes you must be rooted) and in most cases you won’t even have to wipe your data. With the arrival of the first flashable ROM, can we expect more to come and maybe even some themes? List of features and instructions after the jump.

ROM features include:

Packed with Tiamat 1.4.4 stock GPU. Flash OC’d gpu version is you wish.

Rooted with SU and superuser, of course

Desktop UA string, CRT Screen Off Animation, Call setting with SIP, and SMS capable enabled.

Supercircle 100 point battery mod

Wifi Ad-Hoc mod enabled

USB Mass Storage Enabled. Use Dinomight’s Mass Storage Tool or activity manager script. I’ve got some truly epic things lined up for this now that I can unleash the brd|smaliBeast !

Init.d boot scripts enabled.

Busybox built in

local.init.rc enabled in system/etc

openVPN binary and script from CyanogenMod. untested but with tun.ko included, should win. Also grabbed Wireless Toolkit binary with built in symlinks from CyanogenMod

Added Quickboot, Estrongs File Explorer, and Flash Player hulufied brdizzled in data/apps. This was included so users coming from full wipe can be up and running. Feel free to remove from zip before flashing.

Instructions on flashing:

Back up your device’s apps and data and nandroid to be safe.
Put ROM (download) on root of MicroSD
Flash ROM
Reboot
Determine if wipe is necessary

If your device bootloops, which is not likely, you will need to wipe. Once booted, attempt to install an app either from the Market or a side loaded apk. If the install fails and borks out, a wipe is necessary. If it is determined you have to wipe, do a Factory Reset in Android Settings menu. At this time do not use Clockwork Recovery to wipe. Once wiped, flash ROM again and reboot.

If you’re planning on attempting this, please do your research and BACK-UP any and all data! For any questions and to learn more about the ROM, please visit the XDA forum thread.

Cheers Luis!

With SD card support being added to the XOOM late last week, we knew the Clockwork Recovery would be soon to follow. And sure enough, it was released yesterday, allowing those of us with XOOMs to create full nandroid backups to our SD cards and feel much better about our hacking adventures.

Full support thread including download and instructions here.

*Pro Tip – When inserting an SD card, do not drop it in the SIM slot or you may be sending your XOOM back to Motorola to have them fish it out. Yeah, I’m talking about me.

Update: Fixed my XOOM! A T5 screwdriver and 4 screws later and I fished it out.

Cheers Graham and Luis!

Your Motorola XOOM is about to get awesome-er. Thanks to XDA member sangreal06, XOOM owners can now enjoy the CRT screen-off animation (in portrait), enjoy desktop versions of websites without having to re-do the “about:debug” trick over and over, send SMS messages (fees apply), and even attempt to make calls (no working mic though). It was only a matter of time, right? And if you want to get around the SMS fee part of this, just activate Google Voice and your texts are free.

I should point out that this hack makes the Contacts app a little odd looking since it enables calling and the dialer. The CRT screen-off only works in portrait or when the device is upside down. The browser fix is key though, and there is a special .apk below that will fix just that if you don’t want to mess with the other stuff.

Download (all fixes): framework-res-040611.apk

Download (website fix only): framework-res-uastring.apk

Instructions:

*3G XOOM ONLY. No support for WiFi version yet.

*Your accounts and wallpaper may disappear after doing this.

*Rooted XOOMs only.

1. Please read all of the notes from above before proceeding.
2. Make a backup of your current framework-res.apk

/system/framework – Copy it and save it in a safe place.

3. Download whichever file you want from above and rename to framework-res.apk.
4a. In Root Explorer, move the framework-res.apk file into /system/framework.

*You’ll need to hit the Mount R/W button first.

4b. You can also move the file in adb using the following set of commands:

adb remount
adb pull /system/framework/framework-res.apk
adb push framework-res.apk /system/framework
reboot

5. If it asks you to replace, just say yes.
6. Your phone will reboot immediately after it replaces it.
7. You may need to reboot a couple of times afterwards.

*Note* – This process worked just fine for me, but I’m sure using adb is the much safer route. If anyone knows the set of commands for that, please drop them in the comments and I’ll add them to the post.

Full support and the most current files can be found at this XDA thread.
