Late last night, the AOKP team finally dropped their first release as MR1 for Jelly Bean (Android 4.2.1). As you had probably hoped, it contains many of your favorite features from past builds.

You’ll find the custom boot animation, statusbar tweaks, power menu options, custom lockscreen options, a fully customizable navigation bar, more statusbar styles, LED control, sound settings, and more. And maybe more importantly, they fixed some of the bugs that came with stock Android 4.2.1.

The Galaxy Nexus builds ship with LeanKernel 5.4.0. Builds for the Nexus 4 and 7 ship with the stock kernel from Google. And yes, as of now, AOKP MR1 is only available on the LTE and GSM G-Nex, Nexus 4 and Nexus 7. Galaxy S3 and Note 2 builds are expected to be included in the next release.

Update: It looks like the Rezound has a new build today as well.

To flash, you definitely need to fully wipe beforehand.

You’ll find download links at the source link below, including one for the Google Apps package.

We’ve known about compatibility with PS3 and Wii controllers, but wireless Xbox controllers, so far have been something many in the Android mobile gaming world having been craving. Apparently, a developer over at XDA has made this dream into reality.

Root is required, but as many know, rooting a Nexus 7 takes very little effort. You can see some one-click instructions to root right here. If you already have root, then it’s simply a matter of mounting the device through terminal and entering just a few commands. Once the minor tweaks are completed, the wireless controller should work perfectly after a simple reboot.

MIUI, one of our all-time favorite ROMs, was updated this weekend to Jelly Bean and then released for a couple of our favorite devices of all time. The Galaxy Nexus (both LTE and GSM) and Nexus 7 each received a build that apparently has little to no issues or bugs. The changelog itself is massive, however, it doesn’t dive into many new features per se. The upgrade from ICS to JB appears to be more of a bug fixer than anything.

*Thoughts – It’s definitely still MIUI, just as you have grown to expect. Google Now is included since it’s Jelly Bean. I’ve noticed a notification bar bug already, along with a lengthy drop from 4G to 3G. Overall, the build is really polished and looks stellar, but it’ll take some time before I can tell if it’s incredibly stable or not.

Developer nize2beme uploaded a port of AOKP for the Nexus 7 to the forums at RootzWiki last night. So far, this is a very early alpha build and in order to get it booted up and running, he says he needed to take pieces of code from the newest CM10 source. At the moment, the developer is looking to get it up and running with more stability, then will add custom features such as a tablet mode tweak and all of the other battery mods and other AOKP customizations.

If your Nexus 7 is unlocked, rooted, and running a custom recovery, then feel free to give it a go. Be sure to make a backup.

When your Nexus 7 arrives, you should be able to unlock its bootloader, root it, and have a custom recovery up in a matter of minutes. After all, it is a Nexus. But if doing things the manual way isn’t for you or you simply don’t have enough time to type “fastboot oem unlock,” then a root toolkit should be right up your alley. WugFresh built one a while back that continues to be updated with support for new Nexus devices, including the Nexus 7. Without having to worry about drivers and the Android SDK, you can use a root toolkit like this, press a couple of buttons, and be on your way.

Many noticed that when the first pictures of the Nexus 7 popped up, Google implemented portrait mode through most of the tablet and we think it looks just fine on the 7″, but others may not. After following these instructions, you will basically be running a 10.1″ UI on the 7″ display. We know there are not many of you that have the tablet yet, but if you get the feeling that you will need some landscape goodness when it arrives, this is how to do it.

Directions for Tablet UI on Nexus 7:

1. Get a file explorer such as root explorer or es file manager(go to settings allow mount rewritable and root access)
2.Then go to system(es file manager just go to the star button on the top left hand side and click on the phone button and you will see the system folder)
3.You will find a build.prop file make sure to make a copy of it and save it somewhere just in case for a backup.
4.Then click on the build.prop and open it with a text editor. (ES file manager has its own)
5. Now scroll down to “ro.sf.lcd_density”, or something with lcd density(sorry im at work so i dont have my n7 with me)
6. Now the original lcd density is 213 so the best result for tablet mode is going 170 and below.
7. Save the file by press the menu button.
8. Reboot your N7 and then you got Tablet UI.

For all of you who pre-ordered this awesome device, don’t worry, the wait is worth it.
