Developers continue to pump out love for the “OG” Droid. Recently, a developer over at XDA decided to go all out and push a complete build of Jelly Bean to Motorola’s most popular Android device. According to a reader that has flashed the build, it seems to be a very functional ROM and only the camera tends to be slow or non-working. If you happen to have your unlocked and rooted Droid sitting around, then why not show it some love with the newest version of Android?

Jelly Bean Ported to OG DROID, This Thing Won’t Die is a post from: Droid Life

CyanogenMod might have officially killed CM support for the OG DROID, but that small fact is not going to stop the good people over at XDA from bringing the newest CM9 to the old iconic device.  A pre-Alpha Ice Cream Sandwich build has been made available for flashing by any and all brave testers willing to give it a try.  This is not daily driver material. This is for people who are experienced with making backups, wiping your device numerous times, and have some extra time to test things.  For the rest of us, we can just sit back and know that people are working hard to bring us ICS to the OG.

Alpha Build Of Ice Cream Sandwich Available For Motorola OG DROID is a post from: Droid Life

Now that is a name we haven’t heard in some time, “Bugless Beast.” The original DROID ROM that was one of the staples back in the day has returned thanks to our buddy Peter Alfonso. Instead of continuing on with his GPA series, he’s going back to Bugless as the name is just to sweet to let retire. He has also added support for a handful of other devices like the Nexus S, Nexus One and DROID Incredible (beta) that are probably worth checking out. OG DROID owners though, you can feel good knowing that you are running Android 2.3.7 before most of the rest of the world.

We are no strangers to the work of Peter Alfonso, here at Droid Life. Pete has been pumping out ROMs since the beginning, and he just keeps on delivering for the masses. His newest release is GPA17, which is Android 2.3.5 for the Motorola DROID. Pete has added in a few noticeable features of course.  You have to love the fact that this device is still getting love, but we should point out that this may be his last update for a while since he is headed back to school.

Our buddy Pete Alfonso continues to work his magic to make the original DROID one of the most current Android devices on the planet.  Today, he’s releasing Android 2.3.5 through DL so that OG owners can have it before almost any other smartphone.  There aren’t a lot of spicy changes, but there are new GApps, an updated Search app that is not in the market yet, Gtalk with video and the new market.

As usual, download the file from above and drop it on your SD card.  After that, boot into recovery through ROM Manager, make a backup and then “install zip from sd card.”

Apparently there are thousands of people who have been waiting for this ROM to be released, and luckily for all of you, last night our dear friend Actngrezy and Mojo Droid uploaded it for the masses. Project Elite 6.5 is based off Android 2.3.4 and is going to make your OG DROID run smooth as butter. Plus, there is even an alternative themed ROM if stock coloration doesn’t tickle your fancy.

What’s even better news is that the developers recently received a DROID Incredible, and you may be seeing Project Elite on multiple devices in the future. Fingers crossed, people. So enough talk, let’s get to flashing!

Place the zip on the root of your SD Card and then boot into Clockwork Mod Recovery. Wipe all your data/cache (for safer installation) and then proceed to install ROM. If coming from earlier version of Project Elite, wipe may not be necessary. Users, proceed with caution.

Custom ROM Friday: Project Elite 6.5 For “OG” DROID is a post from: Droid Life

Someone saw our story earlier today about the newest MIUI UI, and it just so happened to be a developer for MIUI. Now here we are with the download link to get it on your DROID today! I flashed it myself on the old but reliable OG, and it’s definitely going to stay there for quite some time while I play with all the new features. 

It has everything that has made MIUI what it is today, with some amazing polishes. Just download the zip and place it on your SD card, then flash using Clockwork Recovery. Please make sure to have a backup of your previous ROM, then wipe data/cache. Let us know what you think, cause so far, we’re really impressed.

Peter Alfonso Releases GPA16 (GB 2.3.4) For The DROID – And We Have The Hidden File is a post from: Droid Life

Tricky title, eh? Looks like the tireless Developers over at XDA have a semi-solid build of Honeycomb available for the Original Droid. No, you can’t make calls on it, or use GPS, or use WiFi, but every passing day it seems that those features shall become reality for our old dear friend.  We should all be so optimistic to think that developers will continue to pump out work like this, long after these devices have been declared dead by their carriers, and manufacturers.

After the jump, I’ll show you what is working, and the video the developer has posted up!  

Very plainly on the XDA Forum page are two lists. Working. Non-working. They read as such:

Working:

Data
Touchscreen
Text Messages
Notification and Softkey Lights

Not Working:

Wifi
Gps
Calls (Honeycomb doesn’t come with a phone app)
Hardware acceleration
Simple auto rotation
Camera

And no where does it say they’re done. Who knows, they could get everything working besides calls of course seeing as how Honeycomb doesn’t support such things. If you wanna give it a try, and I might do the same if I have some extra time today, follow this link and see how smooth it is. Can the DROID’s processor handle the beast that is Honeycomb? Honeycomb Released On Original DROID? is a post from: Droid Life

Our boy Peter Alfonso released an updated Stock Gingerbread ROM for the Original Droid over the weekend. This one is entitled GPA15 and from Pete’s words is supposed to be the best. We can never get enough love for our beloved DROID.

If coming from an earlier build or a different ROM in general, I would recommended a full wipe.

Step 1: Download this file and place on the root of your SD Card. (Changelog)
Step 2: Boot in Clockwork Recovery and wipe both Data and Cache.
Step 3: Using Clockwork, navigate to the .zip file and flash the ROM.

And as we all know, Step 4 is to enjoy! Let us know what you think in the comment section below. He also wants you to note that if you have no sound when making a call, you need to reboot once.

Just two weeks in after the official release of CM7 and we’ve got an update that fixes some of the bugs you may have encountered.  It also is the first official “stable” version of 7.0 that we’ve seen for the original DROID.  Nice work guys.  Now, if only everyone in this business would act this fast on bug fixes…

CyanogenMod 7.0.2 Released for Original DROID and Incredible, Just a Bug Fixer for Most is a post from: Droid Life

You know we’re getting close to a final build of the new CyanogenMod 7 when the original DROID is starting to see release candidates.  RC3 for CM7 was released just a few days ago without the OG, so since it has been included in this latest mass drop, you should probably go grab it.  The Incredible also has an RC4, but the jump from RC3 to 4 isn’t going to mean much to you and really just includes bug fixes.

If coming from another CM7 build, you might not need to wipe data and cache, but it never hurts.  Flash in Clockwork like you would any other ROM.

CyanogenMod 7 RC4 Released for Original DROID, Other Devices is a post from: Droid Life

Yesterday, a new batch of CyanogenMod release candidates went out for devices like the Incredible, but it wasn’t until late last night that CM7 RC2 for the original DROID was released.  Built from the latest 2.3.3 source with a bunch of classic CM tweaks tossed in, this is your Gingerbread.  Well, there are other Android 2.3 ROMs out there, like this one from Pete, but you get what I’m saying.

CM7 RC2 Released for Original DROID as Well is a post from: Droid Life

We made mention of Pete’s new Android 2.3.3 ROM (GPA13) for the original DROID yesterday alongside the news that Google Music syncing went live in Gingerbread, but wanted to make sure you all really knew that it was available.  This is the latest build in his quest to bring the OG the newest versions of Android currently available.  And since we’re pretty sure that this phone will never receive an official build, know that this is as close as you’ll probably ever get.

Remember the “Honeycomb” music app that leaked out back in December?  You know, the one that included a broken option to “Sync Music”?  It’s back in the spotlight today and for a good reason.  It appears to be finding a way to sync music to a mysterious Google Cloud on devices running Android 2.3.3.  This new active syncing was discovered over at XDA through user WhiteWidows who tested out the music app while running the latest CyanogenMod7 2.3.3 build.  Just after installing it, he received a permission request from Google Music and started digging deeper to see what was actually happening.

Once accepted, and the “Jumper” app that comes with the Honeycomb music app has been configured slightly, your phone will indeed start syncing your music…to somewhere.  WhiteWidows went as far as waiting for his entire music collection to sync, then removed his SD card and swapped it out with a blank one to see if he could still play his music.  Sure enough, he could. From the cloud.

There’s no telling where your music is going, but this gives some hope to the idea that Google’s Music service is just around the corner.  And after all, we are just 2 months from Google I/O, so hopefully the final bugs are being ironed out now and we’ll see some sort of epic unveiling on the 10th or 11th.

To test it out for yourself, grab either the latest CM7 nightly from ROM Manager or the new Bugless Beast that just came out today and give it a go.

After that, re-grab the “Honeycomb” music app here.  As you can see from the screenshots above, my original DROID running the new Bugless Beast GPA13 is indeed syncing right now.
