From the same man that unlocked some of Motorola’s heavily guarded bootloaders, a new root method for DROID Bionic owners running the new Jelly Bean firmware has been released. Unfortunately for most of you, it is for folks running Ubuntu because due to technical reasons, a Windows version is currently impossible. 

Root is acquired by running a modified version of Motorola’s own Motoshare software and some customized files. If you fit the bill as a Bionic owner on the new firmware and have yourself a running Linux workstation, go follow the via and get your root on.

If you still like to hack on your DROID Bionic, you’ll be pleased to learn that the new Ice Cream Sandwich update (6.7.246) fastboot file has been released. Just like with old SBF files that were flashed in RSD Lite, this will allow you to recover your phone should you run into any issues. If anything, you should download for safe keeping.

We should point out that once you are running ICS 6.7.246, it is highly recommended that you never try to flash back to Gingerbread 5.9.905, as it may permanently brick your device.

See that little “qe 1/1″ listed on the screenshot above of my DROID RAZR booted into recovery? According to @P3Droid and a variety of testers, this is a root checker of sorts that Motorola has built into the boot and recovery .img files of their current crop of devices, including the RAZR, RAZR MAXX and DROID 4. If you see “qe 0/0″ you are running a device that has never been rooted. If you see “qe 0/1″ you are running a device that was at one time rooted, but currently is not. If you see “qe 1/1″ like in the picture above, you are running a device that is currently rooted. 

At this point, it’s tough to tell if this is a big deal or not. In theory, it could mean that if you return your phone because of a warranty concern, that Motorola or Verizon could simply boot into recovery and check this to see if you are or have been rooted, and then potentially deny you of a replacement phone. We don’t know that they will actually do that, but you have to wonder what else their motives for including a root checker would be.

P3 is also under the impression that when the Bionic is updated to Ice Cream Sandwich, it will also receive this new root checker. At this time, there is no way to trick or reset it.

The first CM10 Jelly Bean (Android 4.1) ROM for the DROID Bionic has been made available by developer dhacker29. It’s definitely an “alpha” build with things like the camera not working, but if you had already grown bored with Ice Cream Sandwich, then this is your next step. These alpha ROMs are usually just for tinkerers and testers, so proceed with caution.

DROID Bionic Receives CM10 Alpha Build is a post from: Droid Life

Attention Bionic owners, another Ice Cream Sandwich build has leaked through Cheesecake. This one is version .299, which has only a confirmed change to the kernel number. With only minor happenings, this is a pretty good sign that we may be finally getting closer to official release. As always, keep on the lookout. Ice Cream Sandwich .229 Leaked for the DROID Bionic, Kernel Updated is a post from: Droid Life

Bionic owners, let me be the first to tell you that your morning just got a whole lot better. Late last night, Android guru P3Droid said on twitter that he came across a leaked build of Ice Cream Sandwich for the DROID Bionic. First impressions are that the build is “buttery smooth” and many people are reporting that it runs pretty well on the phone.

The best part about this file is that it can be, actually must be, flashed from stock recovery. You must be on stock .905 for this to work but if you drop the file on your SDcard you can flash away. And if the story could get any sweeter, the root method that worked on the RAZR 4.0.4 build seems to work fine here, but there is a special root method being made for this anyway. If you want to get your Bionic up-to-date hit the source link below and happy flashing!

Update:  The previous root method apparently works, but djrbliss is recommending that you do not use it. Wait for the special root method if you can.

ICS 4.0.4 Leaks For DROID Bionic, Can Be Flashed Through Stock Recovery is a post from: Droid Life

The DROID Bionic update we informed you about yesterday is now being shipped out to owners. We know it’s not Ice Cream Sandwich, but it does offer better 4G LTE connectivity (which is a plus) and a couple of other random fixes. One of our tipsters pulled the update zip file for all to enjoy, so if you need to open and examine, feel free to do so.

Note: According to Moto’s Forum Manager, this could just be a smaller soak test with larger roll out happening as early as next week. Sorry, folks.

Owners of Motorola devices who might want to flash some vanilla Ice Cream Sandwich with no Blur attached now have additional options when looking to do so. There have been ICS ROMs available already, but there was a bug involved that hindered the camera from working properly in some of them. And for some, a non-working camera is a complete no-go. 

Below we have a few ROMs that have working cameras and little to no bugs beyond that. If you want to flash any of these, know that you must be rooted and we hope you have a basic understanding of how flashing custom ROMs to your device works.

DROID Bionic 5.9.902 Fasboot Files Released is a post from: Droid Life

Previous versions of a custom ROM built for the DROID Bionic have been unsuccessful due to a problem with 4G LTE data. Thanks to a recent update to the device from Moto, the underground team has been able to put the pieces together to get the Ice Cream Sandwich build up and running for the masses. If you’re savvy with bootstrapping your device and flashing custom ROMs on a Bionic, then this build is right up your alley.

The first thing you will notice is that this is based on pure vanilla ICS and there is no Blur to be seen. 4G LTE data is working perfectly and only the Camera application is non-working so far, but they’re working on that. You will be able to use all your favorite root-required apps and if you want to give this build a try, then go ahead and follow the via link for instructions and downloads. Happy flashing.

Accepted the latest OTA updates for the DROID Bionic and RAZR and have been frustrated with the lack of root access? According to a couple of readers who were willing to take the dive, you should be able to use the method that was released for the DROID 4 over the weekend by @djrbliss. This is for those of you that have yet to get accustomed to using OTA RootKeeper before accepting these updates, of course.

A huge “thanks” again goes out to daywalker04 who has released another set of fastboot files that a ton of DL community members will benefit from. Just yesterday we saw files for the RAZR, but this time it’s the DROID Bionic that gets the love. These are not the first fastboot files we have seen for the Bionic, however, these are built for the newest OTA of 5.5.893 that most of you upgraded to within the last couple of weeks. So going forward, should you soft brick your phone, you will have an easy path to recovery that doesn’t include jumping back 2 or 3 OTA updates.

New DROID Bionic 5.5.893 Fastboot Files Released is a post from: Droid Life

The wait is over. Kejar and JRummy have finally released Liberty ROM to the public for both the DROID3 and DROID Bionic. As is customary with their ROMs, you get a mostly Blur-free UI, “from source” built apps, snazzy yellow and black theme (@davekover), and a whole bunch of customizable settings to really make this your own. Their work has always been some of our favorite here at DL and wanted to share with those of you who may not be familiar yet.  

Downloads:  Liberty DROID3 | Liberty Bionic

Instructions:

1. Download the correct file for your phone from above and drop it on your SD card.
2. Make sure you have root and Clockwork recovery installed.
3. Boot into recovery via Bootstrap.
4. Select “wipe data/factory reset”.
5. Select “Yes — delete all data”.
6. Go back.
7. Select “install zip from sdcard”.
8. Select “choose zip from sdcard”.
9. Find and select LibertyXX.zip.
10. Select “Yes” to flash the file.
11. Reboot and enjoy!

In case you missed Apple’s announcement, whether it was out of anger or lack of interest, there were a few moments that made me giggle. When Phil Schiller took the stage, he continued the trademarked Apple presentation of slide after slide of propaganda information. When the slide pictured above came up, Mr. Schiller was quick to taunt the competition, mainly the Droid Bionic.

“I don’t know what Droid Bionic customers have to do between taking pictures… like, go get coffee.”

I have to admit, I laughed. Let’s be honest, Motorola doesn’t have the best cameras, no matter how many megapixels they pump into them.
